SPRING I 2015 - WEEK 8
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the student workers in the Student Learning Center.
Name: Hometown:
Faisal Aljanubi Riyadh, Saudia Arabia
Hi Faisal, how are you today?
Level:
30
Age:
20
Good, feeling perfect today!
Great! How are finals? All of them A's so that makes me feel good. They were kind of difficult but that's good. What are you plans for Spring Break? I don't know yet, maybe travel to San Diego with friends and play volleyball on the beach. Visit our friends who live there. I have not been there before. I will also spend some time at the gym. Nice, what is your major?
After CESL I will go for environmental engineering.
What does an environmental engineer do? Study nature and figure out how to fix air pollution, water pollution, high temperature. We try to work with these problems and make them better. What are some of your hobbies? I like drawing and I am pretty good at it. I like to draw animals, nature, trees and stuff. I usually use a pencil or paintbrush. I also like to beatbox and do beatbox challenges and things. I have been in a beatbox tournament before. I also play table tennis. Surprises about American culture when you arrived? I thought most people would be arrogant but people here are so friendly. I really like that.
Interviewed by DJ Nixon
Any other thoughts about America? Well I stopped in Chicago for a few days before coming to Tucson. I loved it, it was so cold but I love cold weather. I am planning to go to a cold state after CESL. Maybe Virgina or New York. Some differences between Saudi Arabia and USA? In Saudi there is so much traffic all the time. People respect the rules of driving here, but in Saudi Arabia almost nobody respects the traffic rules. Favorite English phrase?
I like "see you later, alligator” and “after a while, crocodile.”
Describe yourself in one word.
Intelligent.
THANKS! NICE FAISAL!

SPRING I 2015 - WEEK 8
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name:
Mohammed Altowla
Where are you from? Saudi Arabia, Ras Tanura, the eastern side of Saudi. What is your city like? It’s a small city. My city is known for oil refinery work. We have a very big oil company there. And also a very good beach there. What do people like to do in your city? Many people have boats there, like my cousin, so you can go fishing and use the boats on the sea. How long have you been in Tucson? I have been here 8 months. What was something that surprised you when you first arrived to the United States? The traffic rules! They are confusing sometimes, like turning left when the light is green but then it turns red and I am stuck in the middle. Do you like it here in Arizona?
Yes, I like Arizona; it is similar to Saudi Arabia.
Interviewed by Tyler Goodwillie
What is something you are interested in? I love cars, Sports cars especially. My favorite car is the Chevy Corvette, but I also like trucks like the GMC trucks. Why do you think you like sports cars? Because I like to challenge people on the highway. Uh oh, be careful. Street racing is illegal in the US. Would you ever want to be a race car driver though? Actually no, I do not want to be a race car driver; it’s really dangerous. So what do you want to study after CESL?
I will study electrical engineering.
Do you want to work with the oil company in Ras Tanura? Probably not with the oil company because they are very strict; they put alarms in your car so that you do not speed. What is your favorite place to get Arabic food? My cooking! I like to cook with my friends, we use a pressure cooker. I like to cook lamb, lamb is delicious. What is your favorite movie? Fast and the Furious! I love all of them, lots of fast cars! CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
