SPRING II 2015 - WEEK 4

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the student activities assistants in the SLC (CESL 209). Name:

Abdulelh Aldossary

Hometown:

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

How long have you been at CESL?

Nickname:

Abbie

Level:

60

Age:

22

About 5 months now

Will you be attending the university after you leave CESL? Yeah, I would like to get my masters in chemical and computer engineering. Do you have a bachelor’s degree or will you receive that at the university here before going on to receive your masters? I have a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from King Fahad University in Saudi Arabia. After I received my degree, I spent a year shadowing engineers before I started work. Like an internship? Yes, kind of like an internship. After that, I worked as a chemical engineer for about two years in one of the oil companies in Saudi Arabia.

Interviewed by
 Ann Turinawe!

Did that company send you here to study English? No, after working for two years in that company, I went to go work for my father’s company. It is his company that is giving me the option to improve my English before I return to work for the company. Was it your father who encouraged you to enter the oil field? Yes, everyone in my family is in oil. My uncles are professors at the university and gave me a love for chemical engineering. Cool! So it’s a family business?

Yeah, right now we are the number one oil company in Saudi Arabia. We export mostly to Europe and Asia.

I guess that means that you have probably traveled all over the world? Yeah, I have been almost everywhere but Russia and Cuba. However, I would really like to go to Russia. Do you have any other passions aside from traveling? I enjoy playing soccer and reading. I mostly like reading short stories, because they are quick and easy to read. It is difficult for me to read a large book or novel because I get bored. I like reading the Chinese novels because they tell you everything in the beginning. Ha ha, reading novels is not a very popular hobby. Where do you find the Chinese stories translated into English? On the Internet! My uncle finds them for me. He can find anything on the Internet so I call him Google. Cool. If you could describe yourself in one word, what would that be? Hard-working, like my father. He is my role model and has been since I was a child. That is really cool! So you two are close?

Yeah, he visits me every two months. We go to Miami and just hangout—spend time together.

Since you have done so much in your life, is there anything else that you wish to do? I just want to live life. I graduated high school at 15 and have been working ever since. I would like to just live.

SPRING II 2015 - WEEK 4

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name:

Othman Alateequi

Hometown:

Kuwait

How long have you been in the US? I have been here five months; this is my first time in the United States. What was something that surprised you when you came to Tucson? Well, I thought Tucson was a desert, like a real desert. I thought there would be no restaurants or anything, just the university and then nothing. So I was surprised to see so many buildings and restaurants. Do you want to stay at the university after CESL? Yes, I want to go to the U of A, maybe study Civil Engineering. I have not fully decided yet. I’ve noticed you speak some Spanish. Why do you want to learn Spanish? I am very interested in Spanish. I started learning it long before I came to Tucson, like five years ago. I have family that lives in Venezuela. My cousin that lives there inspired me to learn Spanish. Would you ever want to live in a Spanish-speaking country? Yeah, I think it would be cool to live somewhere in South America. Are there any other languages you want to learn? My fourth goal is Portuguese. I think if I speak English and Spanish, well, Portuguese will be easy to learn.

Interviewed by
 Tyler Goodwillie!

What are some other things you like to do? In Kuwait, I ride horses. I really like to ride horses; my family owns a few of them. What is your “dream job”? I would love to be an engineer in a Spanish-speaking country and also a translator. So, I am on the right track to achieve that! What is something you really want to do in the near future? I want to skydive! Also, I want to go to Cancun! I am deciding if I should go to Cancun on my break or back to Kuwait. CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

SPRING II 2015 - WEEK 4

Ask CESL Question: Spring has sprung! What sort of spring activities can I do around town? Answer: This is the perfect time of year to run around and do some activities. The weather has warmed up, but isn't too hot yet. One thing you can do is visit the Tucson Botanical Gardens. It is open seven days a week from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. For $12 you can enjoy a lovely public garden. Complete with a butterfly garden, this is one spring activity not to miss! It is located at 2150 N. Alvernon Way. Learn more at www.tucsonbotanical.com. Spring is also a great time to enjoy some of Tucson's many hiking trails. A popular area is Sabino Canyon, located on the east side of Tucson at 5900 N. Sabino Canyon Road. This popular outdoor spot has many different hikes of varying difficulty and always has running water, a rarity in Tucson! Go see the cactus blooms while you can. In addition to the Spring Fling activity happening on campus starting April 10, the end of April will bring the 104th annual Pima County Fair to Tucson. The fair runs for 10 days from April 16 to 26 and has the usual fair activities with rides, live music, cotton candy, and tons of people. Find out more at www.pimacountyfair.com. Finally, the 5th annual Cyclovia Tucson event will be happening on April 19. The event can be described as an easygoing, fun community bike ride around downtown and southern Tucson. It promotes an active and car-free lifestyle. Participants may bike, rollerblade, scooter, walk, or use any other form of creative non-mechanical vehicle. Usually about 10,000 people show up to have a good time! More info at www.cycloviatucson.org.
