Interviewed by Dj Nixon
What is your name and level?
My name is Mauricio Vera and I am in level 40.
Where are you from?
I am from south of Chile; about 4 hours from Santiago in a small town called Villa Alegre, which means “Happy Village” in Spanish.
How many people live there?
About 10,000. It is a small town where 5,000 live in the town and 5,000 live in the countryside.
What can you tell me about your home?
There are many outdoor areas like Mt. Lemmon. Since Chile is a thin country, you are 1 hour from the mountains and 1 hour from the beach. Many people visit to experience typical Chilean culture like the cowboy rides and see typical colonial Spanish homes. It is relaxing and quiet.
What is your favorite Chilean phrase?
“Lo que es chileno, es bueno”. It means “what is Chilean, is good.”
Is this your first time in the U.S.?
No. I visited U of A with my school in 2012. I visited the Grand Canyon, and I even watched American movies back home in hopes of coming here.
What is a city you want to visit?
I want to see Las Vegas because I think it’s a crazy city.
What do you study?
I will study hydrology and water resources.
What are some of your hobbies?
I like outdoor activities like soccer and seeing my friends.
Who is your favorite superhero?
Captain Planet!

What is your name?
Gabriela Griebler Gusmao
Where are you from?
I am from Sao Miguel de Oeste, SC, Brazil.
How long have you been in Arizona?
I have been here just one month.
What do you like to do in Tucson?
I love hanging out with my friends and going to CESL.
Which places would you like to go in the U.S.?
I want to go to the Grand Canyon, New York, Disneyland, Las Vegas and Miami.
What places in Brazil do you recommend visiting? Rio de Janeiro is a good place because it has a famous statue (Cristo Redentor). Florianopolis has the most beautiful beaches and Porto Seguro has the best carnival parties. What are you plans after CESL?
I want to go to the U of A to study mechanical engineering.
Would you like to stay here in the U.S. or go back to Brazil?
I would like to stay here but I have to go
back to finish at the university. Describe yourself in one word.
Happy.

TEFL Student Spotlight!
CESL not only teaches students but trains teachers in the teacher training program! Meet some future educators!
Interviewed by Kelsie Owen
What is your name?
Lorene Dameff
Where are you from?
Well, I’m originally from Pennsylvania, but my dad was in the Army, so we moved a lot.
If you could do anything in the world, what would you want to do? I want to travel a lot, and then teach English in Italy. What did you do before you came to CESL? I am a U of A student, and this is my senior year. I am working on my interdisciplinary degree in English, Italian, and Deaf Studies. What do you want to do after you get your TEFL Certificate? I would like to teach ESL and EFL/ASL to foreign deaf students. Why do you want to teach English? I want to teach because I am good at it. I can help others improve because I studied more than a lot of people. What is your favorite place to go in Tucson? My garden, because of the green grass, trees, and flowers. What advice do you have for other people who want to be teachers? I think every teacher should take the TEFL course, because CESL teaches you how to be a better teacher. It is a good program, and this class shows teachers how to help students enjoy learning and reach their goals. If you could be any color, what would you be? Green, because my garden is green! It’s my favorite color.

Ask CESL Q: What can I do downtown after the closing ceremony? A: Depending on what you are looking for, there are plenty of places to visit downtown. Keep in mind that the majority of these places are for the 21 and over age group. Shot in the Dark Café: serves everything from breakfast to sandwiches and wraps. They also have a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes. They also serve great coffee! Open 24 hrs. a day! Barrio Brewing (800 E 16th Street) and Iguana Café (210 E Congress Street) are great sports bars to visit if you are looking to enjoy a beer and some sports. If you are looking for a better beer experience, you can try World of Beer, Thunder Canyon Brewery, Tap & Bottle, or Borderlands Brewing Company. Most of these places can be found on either Broadway or Congress or nearby. Clubs and Bars for dancing the night away can be found all along Congress. A few places to visit are Hi Fi Kitchen & Cocktails, The Junxion Bar, H2O Discotec, Sapphire Lounge and Zen Rock.
Have a good time and congrats on a great semester!
