“Flippin’ butter fingers, Glenn!” One of the highlights of the picnic was the highly anticipated egg toss. Several students and staff ended up covered in egg after failing to catch their egg. Regardless, everyone had a blast!

CESL Picnic: Food & Fun in the Sun If you missed out on the Annual Fall Picnic, we are very sorry. You missed an awesome day! Attendees ate sandwiches and slushies from Eegees; took part in 3-legged sack races, egg toss, and a variety of sports; and most of all, got the chance to hang out with their friends from CESL on a beautiful day. Kartchner Caverns

Last Saturday, 13 students and two student workers from CESL took the trek to Kartchner Caverns State Park to see Arizona’s best living cave. Students were able to see dripping cave formations that are still growing underground! From soda straw formations that are only as thick as a drop of water to the huge, 70-feet-tall “Kubla Khan” tower formation, our students got to see something that you will not see everyday. Check out more pictures from the day on the next page! 3

CESL WEEKLY

FALL 1, 2017 - WEEK 5

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Haibo sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Turki Level: 3 Hometown: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Major: Special Education Interviewed by: Haibo Sun

Why are you seeking a finance major? Because I was studying this major as my bachelor degree. What do you like the most in Tucson? People are really nice and friendly here. What is your favorite food here? La Indita is my favorite restaurant here. Their tacos are really good. What made you come to CESL? Because it is a good place for me to practice English and assist me to further study at the U of A. What is your hobby in your daily life? Watching movies and trying new foods. Did you know English before you came here? Nope. I never studied it before. I just learned English by myself from watching movies and studying at CESL. What is the most challenging part of learning English for you? Speaking is the hardest part for me, because it is not my first language.

Turki and Haibo In general, what makes you happy or helps you relax? Listening to music or meeting new funny friends makes me happy. Any advice for other CESL students? You have to study hard and make friends in order to improve your English faster.

CESL WEEKLY

FALL 1, 2017 - WEEK 5

Student Spotlight! Name: Eveline Soraya dos Santos Faria Interviewed by: Hady Mambo

Level: 7

Hometown: Luanda, Angola

What was your first impression of CESL? My first impression about CESL was that CESL is an amazing place. The environment is very friendly, and there are a lot of good people around here. When asked about your home city what is the first memory that comes to mind? The first memory that comes to my mind is the gatherings of my family over the weekends. All the family reunites in my house and we have a great time with lots of food. What has surprised you most about the US? Traffic jams in Houston. I thought it was not a common thing in here. What do you find most challenging about living abroad?
Having a lot of responsibilities and be very far from family and friends. I would say that I have started a new life, and that has been difficult sometimes. What's the best/worst thing to happen since you started studying at CESL? The best thing that has happened since I am at CESL is that the teachers care about you, not only about your academic life but also they help in whatever they can and that has been life changing to me. For instance, before I came here I was studying in Houston and I do not remember the teachers caring that much about me as they do in here. When your friends/family found out that you were coming to the US to study, what was their reaction and what did they want to know? They wanted me to know that they would support me in whatever I needed, but they also got sad because I would be living away from them. What do you think will change in your life over the next five years? I hope to finish my studies and be working. I also hope to be a fitness model.

Eveline & Hady

What's it like to be a CESL student? It is learning new things everyday, being ready in class— study, study, study—and also having fun :) If you weren't studying at CESL right now, what would you be doing instead, or what would your life be like? I would probably be traveling all over the world, specifically in Las Vegas and spending some money I do not have right now. What can you tell us about your country? Angola is a country that is trying to slowly develop despite many political controversies. It is a very beautiful country. We have many beautiful places to visit and it is a country for tourism—especially for outdoor activities.

CESL WEEKLY

FALL 1, 2017 - WEEK 5

Learning Advisor Tip of the Week Have you ever sent an email to your teacher and never gotten a response? There may be a good reason why. Email writing is a skill. If you do not know how to write a good email, you will probably have a very difficult time trying to communicate with your teachers and professors. Here are a few points to remember before you send your next email! 1) Say hello! Don’t just start your email with a demand. Greet your professor with Hello…. or Dear… Also make sure to call your teacher by the correct name. The easiest way to do this is, Professor + their last name. 2) Ask politely. You should always request things with a question. Instead of saying, “Send me the homework assignment now,” you should say, “Could you please send me the homework assignment?” 3) Use the subject line. Teachers are busy! They don’t have much time to spend on sorting through emails. Use the subject line to quickly explain what your email contains, rather than leaving it blank. 4) Sign your name. Your teacher will ignore your email if you don’t say who you are. 5) Be formal. Emails are not text messages. Spell your words correctly instead of using abbreviations (ex. You vs. u, please vs. plzzzzz). Writing a good email takes time. You need to be polite, respectful, and clear. Remember to also be patient when waiting for a response. Try following these rules, and communication with your teacher will become easier and friendlier.

Subject: Question about Quiz on Friday 10/2

Dear Professor Gibson, I hope your week is going well. I’m writing this email because I had a question about the quiz this Friday. Could you please tell me what pages will be covered on the quiz? I would really appreciate your help. Thank you, Camille Richter
