Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Nwaf sat down with a CESL student to ask her some questions.

Name: Afnan Almohisin Hometown: Al-Hassa, Saudi Arabia

Level: 7 Interviewed by: Nwaf Alghamdi

What is your intended major? Respiratory care, and hopefully continue to study Medicine afterwards and be a surgeon. Will you be the only doctor in your family? No, my brother is studying medicine in Poland and will graduate very soon. My sister, Banin, who also studies here at CESL (Level 8), wants to study medicine and be a doctor one day too. Medicine runs in the family! What are you passionate about outside of Medicine? Art: Drawing & Photography. Where do you find your inspiration when you draw? I like to draw portraits, especially the small features of people's faces. My favorite part to draw is the eyes— the eyes tell a lot about a person. I have a visual memory which helps me as well.

Afnan & Nwaf

How long have you been at CESL, and how did you hear about it? I have been here one year, and heard from a friend who used to go here.

How do you like your time here in the US? I'm enjoying it very much, especially here in Tucson because it is quiet which helps me focus on studying. Also, I like that Tucson is not an expensive place to live in comparison to big cities, so I can save money and travel more which is nice. What surprised you the most about the US? Guns. There are a lot of guns here. Also the health care system; I used to think that there is a public health care system but I was surprised to learn that it is all private.

Thanks for the interview, Afnan!

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Haibo sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Xiangding Chen Hometown: Putian, China

Level: 8 Major: Law Interviewed by: Haibo Sun

Tell me something about your hometown. My hometown is the birth place of the Goddess Matsu. She is regarded as an ocean god who protects fishermen’s safety. What is your first memory of Tucson? I felt my skin burning and I could clearly see the mountains in the distance. What do you wish if you could change one thing about yourself? I would really like to be able to speak my local dialect if I could have another chance to learn it in my childhood. I have a hard time communicating with people from my hometown including my grandma since she can only speak the local dialect. What is your favorite music or singer? Utada Hikaru is my favorite singer. She is really famous in Japan and she sings with a soft but husky voice. How did you hear about her? I know her from the ending song of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Xiangding & Haibo

Tell me something about your last trip? I went to the OdySea Aquarium in Phoenix. It was a memorable trip for me because it was my first time to experience a restroom with an ocean view; I could see a shark swimming in the tank while I was washing my hands. Is there anywhere you want to visit this fall? I want to go to the Grand Canyon because it has an impressive landscape view and it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Can you teach me a saying from China? 心急吃不了热豆腐 translates to “can’t eat the hot tofu impatiently”. It means that haste makes waste.

Thanks for the interview!
