Tucson Meet Yourself
Last Saturday, Nwaf took a group of curious CESL students to Tucson’s annual folklife festival, Tucson Meet Yourself. The students had the chance to sample foods and watch performances from a diverse group of cultures. This was a great way to see the diversity that Tucson has to offer.

Preview of the Championship?
In a match that could well be the prequel to a second match in the CESL Chess Championship, CESL’s Assistant Coordinator for Academic Programs, Jay Pence took on current student and former UAE chess champion, Reem Alzadjali. Jay was so nervous that he was literally shaking, while Reem looked just about as cool as a human cucumber. Though she was the aggressor early, the long match eventually ended in a draw. “She doesn’t know it, but that was the best game I ever played, just to get a draw.” Well, Jay, now she knows. Good luck in the tournament!

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Hamad Alenezi Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait
Level: 2
Major: Automation Engineering Interviewed by: Hady Mambo
How did you learn about CESL and what made you come to Tucson? I heard about CESL from my friends who have studied here before and others that are current students here. They said that Tucson is a nice city, not very expensive to live and the weather here is similar to the weather in my country. Why did you choose the US as the place for your studies? When I finished high school I had a very high GPA and my government offered me a scholarship to come and study here. Congratulations on the scholarship Hamad. Then that means you will study at UofA after your English studies, is that right? Yes, that is right. I wanna study at The University of Arizona and pursue Automation Engineering as my major. How has this experience of living abroad been for you? It has been a bit challenging because back home I used to have people take care of me, doing the chores, paying for my stuff, etc, and here I have to do all this by myself. What has this experience taught you so far? I’ve discovered that by living alone I develop self discipline, gain more responsibility and by relying on myself I gain more self Hamad confidence. Therefore, despite being difficult to adapt to because I’ve only been here for two months, it has been an amazing experience.
& Hady
What do you like the most here in Tucson and at CESL in particular? I love the city, especially the UofA campus. People here are friendly and like to talk, but I’ve learned that students at UofA are always busy so most of the time I just greet them and have small conversations as I prefer to talk with people downtown. What do you think about the activities here at CESL? I like the clubs, especially Conversation Club, Table Talk and Music Club. I like that students from the university come to talk to us; this helps me improve my English and have good conversations. Music club is very fun and I learn many new words while singing. Thank you, Hamad! Good luck with your studies!

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Nwaf sat down with a CESL student to ask her some questions. Name: Heather (CN) Level: 7 Hometown: Shenzhen, China
Major: MA in TESL Interviewed by: Nwaf Alghamdi
What’s your hobby? Traveling, but not as much right now. I also do some reading and a little bit of writing. What kind of books do you read? I read ancient Chinese philosophy books. I read about Confucianism, Taoism, and many others. What else do yo do in your free time? I practice Tai Chi, for mostly health reasons. It is a great way to bring calmness to my life. I also like calligraphy and cooking. What do you like to cook? Back home my mother would usually cook and I would help by doing the dishes and so on, but now I started to cook. I like to make fried rice with corn, eggs, beans, and other vegetables. It is easy and delicious.
Nwaf & Heather
How long have you been in the US? I’ve been here for four months, but I’ve just recently moved to Tucson. I used to live in Chicago. What surprised you the most about the US? I was surprised by the size of houses. They’re big! Also, people here eat a lot of meat. What do you think about Tucson? I really like it here, everything is so photogenic. The UofA campus is very beautiful, too. Thanks for the interview, Heather!
