Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Aziz Alsaif Major: Architecture Level: 7 Hometown: Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Interviewed by: Hady Mambo How did you first hear about CESL? From my cousin, he studies at Harvard and I asked him for recommendations. He recommended CESL because of the university. He found out that this university has a nice reputation and the English program is great. What was your first impression of CESL? At first, I thought it was going to be boring. But as the session started, that changed. I made some friends and have fun here. When asked about your home city, what is the first memory that comes to your mind? It is a beautiful city. It is the most beautiful in my country. The mall and the beach are some of the remarkable places there. What has surprised you most about the US? Tucson is a small city. The idea I had before coming here was that everywhere would be like Los Angeles.

Aziz & Hady

What do you find most challenging about living abroad? I would say that cleaning and cooking for myself is probably the most challenging. What do you wish other people knew about CESL? There is a lot of respect here for everyone. Here at CESL, they respect every culture and people of different backgrounds. What is a piece of advice you would give to other CESL students that you learned from this session? One sentence: Avoid being late and absent to classes. Thanks, Aziz!

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Nwaf sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Khaled Almutawa Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait

Major: Industrial Engineering Interviewed by: Nwaf Alghamdi

Level: 2

Hi, Khaled! It’s a pleasure to have you! Tell me, why do you want to study Industrial Engineering? I like business and engineering and Industrial Engineering seems to combine both in the same major. My uncle also influenced my choice; he has a masters degree in Industrial Engineering from the US and I used to work with him over the summer. He taught me about the major and I liked it. What kind of work did you do with your uncle? I used to spend some of my summers working at his company as a marketing coordinator. The experience taught me a lot and I’m grateful for it. Where do you want to pursue your degree after graduating from CESL? I have three places in mind: University of San Diego, West Virginia State University, or Arizona State University. My number one choice would be San Diego. The weather and the city are really nice—I also have good friends there.

Khaled & Nwaf

Do you feel your English has improved since you came here? I feel that my English improved very fast since I came here, especially with speaking and grammar. I like to chat with people. I made friends with my apartment complex staff and I enjoy stopping by their office everyday and chatting with them. We get to know each other and our cultures. I also feel that my grammar improved because of CESL which gives me confidence in my language. That’s good to hear! Tell me a bit about Kuwait. It is the best country for food—we have so many good choices from all over the world. I think it is the best place to get American food outside of America. We also have many big malls and parks. What do you like to do in your free time? In Kuwait, I used to hang out with friends in cafes. I also practice MMA, but since I moved here I switched to boxing and go to a 6 gym called Undisputed.
