CESL WEEKLY
FALL 2, 2017 - WEEK 8
Old Tucson Studios History Old Tucson Studios has been the filming site for more than 400 film and television projects since 1939. It is one of the most active filming locations for Western-themed movies, television, cable shows, and commercials in the United States. Old Tucson saw a number of stars come to the desert for filming in the early days, including James Stewart, John Wayne, Dean Martin, Paul Newman, and Clint Eastwood. In the 80s and 90s, Westerns made a return to prominence, and Old Tucson welcomed actors like Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Russell Crowe, Sharon Stone, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Who knew? With the resurgence of Westerns in popular culture, it is quite possible that another major Western film could begin shooting at Old Tucson at any time. For now, Old Tucson Studios remains the southwest’s premiere Wild West attraction, with live action gun and stunt shows, musicals and live entertainment, vintage rides, and genuine southwest BBQ.
By arriving at 4pm on Friday, you will have free access to the park’s attractions until 5pm! 2

FALL 2, 2017 - WEEK 8
Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Haibo sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Mengyu Ruan Hometown: Nanjing, China
Level: 8 Interviewed by: Haibo Sun
Tell me something about yourself. Hi guys, I come from Nanjing, and it is a little bit different than Tucson since Nanjing is a four seasons city which is located on the lower Yangze River in China. It has about 2,500 years of history since the Ming dynasty. What do you usually do in your country? I like to play video games and basketball with my friends, especially when I feel stressed. It is a good way for me to relax and hang out with friends. What things do you like to do in Tucson? I like to eat at Texas Roadhouse. I like the atmosphere and the food. The bread and steak taste good. What do you think about interacting with people from different cultures? Interacting with different cultures makes me able to think about different points of view. Also, it helps me to build up communication skills with domestic and other international students.
Mengyu & Haibo
Have you learned anything from those other cultures? I have learned how to respect other people with different cultural backgrounds. It is important to learn the real meaning behind their culture rather than to learn from other peoples’ mouths. What major do you want to study at the UofA? I want to study Economics, because it relates to many fields in our lives. Also, I can finish my undergraduate degree faster by studying Econ and save more money and time to further study in grad school. What are you going to do after graduation? I would like to keep studying to perfect myself, but I don’t have a specific major of study yet. I will figure it out after undergraduate study. Thanks, Mengyu!

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Nwaf sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Azzam Alhuwaymil
Level: U-Track
Hometown: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Interviewed by: Nwaf Alghamdi
Hi, Azzam! Why did you decide to come study here at CESL? I was sent by my employer to study English to improve my translating abilities. What will you be doing once you leave CESL? I’ve been here for a year now and will leave at the end of the semester. I’ll return to my work and apply what I have learned to be a translator. Why did you pick Tucson? My employer picked it. Although I’m used to big cities, I like Tucson. The people here are polite and friendly. I think the people are why I like it. Have you visited many other places here outside of Tucson? Yes, I traveled with my friends to many places including LA, San Diego, Miami, Las Vegas, and others.
Nwaf & Azzam
What would you say has been your favorite place to visit? I liked Miami, but LA is still my favorite. I’ve been to LA five times since I came to Tucson. What did you like about your experience here at CESL? I like that I made so many friends from all over the world. I have friends from France, Germany, China, the US, and many other places. It is great to have friends from different countries. Now that you are finishing up, how do you feel about going back home? I’m really excited, especially for the food. I have only been home once since coming here, so it will be nice to go back. Good luck with finals, Azzam. Safe travels home! 6
