Skate Country! Sat. 2/24

Check out our fav pics from the day! p. 2

CESL Takes Skate Country by Storm On Saturday 2/24, 13 brave CESLingers donned orangewheeled roller skates (for many, for the first time) and boogied their way around the roller rink to a mix of old and new pop, disco, and hip hop hits. Were our feet sore afterwards? Sure. A few falls? Perhaps. But one thing is certain: fun was had by all who attended, and there were quite a few memorable moments. Check them out on page 2.

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Haibo sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Junlin Chen Hometown: Liuzhou, China

Level: 6 Interviewed by: Haibo Sun

Tell us something about yourself. Hi everyone, I am Junlin, my nickname is Alex. In my spare time, I like to play video games, play basketball, and watch movies. What motivates you to play video games? I dreamed of being a professional video game player when I was 15, but my dad would not allow me to pursue it. He expected me to study and run a business instead. What do you do when you lose a really important game? I am a bit sad, but I am prepared and ready for the following game. What are three words you’d use to describe yourself? I would say brave, modest, and detailoriented are three words to describe me. What is one thing that people don’t know about you? Bitter gourd is one of my favorite foods, because I like the taste and it is very healthy.

Junlin & Haibo

What are you studying? I am going to study MIS or Finance when I get into the UofA because I want to be a businessman and run my own business. What is your favorite part about studying in the US? I can learn about different cultures from my friends and professors, which helps me to expand my horizons and be more culturally competent. Thanks, Alex!

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Thanyan Alhasan Level: 8 Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait

Major: Electrical Engineering Interviewed by: Hady Mambo

Hey Thanyan, you have the same major as me! That’s awesome. Do you know what to expect from it? Yes it is amazing that we have the same major. I am planning on going to UofA after CESL so maybe if you are still there I would like you to give me some advice and tips on how to succeed. To answer your question, I don’t know practically, but theoretically I know it will be very intense and I will have to study very hard. Yes, of course I’ll help out. What is a fact about you that you would like to share with us? It is a thing that has literally changed my life and lifestyle. I used to be a very shy and introverted person before coming here. I would not ask anyone for help nor have the desire to talk to anyone unless necessary. However, I have changed that because when I started studying here at CESL I met people from many different places; I would be “forced” to participate in the class activities and then started participating in the clubs and Saturday activities. This is my third session here and it has been a very pleasant experience.

Hady & Thanyan

Have you developed or sharpened any skills? Yes I have. I am naturally a multi-tasking person. I can do my homework while watching TV, playing video games, and listening to music. I have learned to prioritize things even when multitasking. I have also developed self-discipline and that is what keeps me on track with the things I do.

You said previously that you have learned to ask for help and talk to people; how has this helped you as a person and student? Now I better know how to express myself, talk about my feelings, and I have realized that so many people care about me, actually. I used to think that no one liked me, but it was me who was not allowing anyone into my life. Would you say you have made more friends here than back home? Yes, definitely. I have made more friends here. I feel at home here. Thank you Thanyan for an outstanding interview. We wish you good luck in your studies! 6
