Puzzle Party in the SLC! With finals fast approaching, several students and student workers decided to take a break from their studies by working on jigsaw puzzles in the Student Learning Center. In the course of three days, they completed three separate puzzles, two of which were 1,000 pieces! It’s a good thing the students don’t put as much work into their classes as they did into these puzzles. Otherwise we would all be out of jobs. JUST KIDDING! Check out some more pictures on page 2.

SPRING 2, 2017 - WEEK 7
Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Logan sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Mishari Ahmad
Level: U-Track
Hometown: Fintas, Kuwait
Major: Chemical Engineering Interviewed by: Logan Mutz
Hi, Mishari. I heard you wanted to talk about music. Do you play any instruments? Yes, I play the alto saxophone. Actually, I attended the UA Band as an extra-curricular activity. I actually performed in the concert a few days ago. It was really cool. That sounds awesome! Yeah, I am planning on joining the Pride of Arizona [UA Marching Band] in the Fall. I got the approval from my government for it, and it is actually one of my dreams to be in a marching band. Wow, congratulations. How long have you played the sax? Since grade 5, but I started in a concert band in grade 8. Actually one of my biggest struggles was learning to play the alto because I had trouble pushing the key with my left pinkie finger because I have a missing ligament. Logan and Mishari Whoa. How did you figure out how to play without it? Well, I just practiced and practiced until I learned how to barely move it. To play the saxophone you really need all of your fingers. But that did not stop me from playing, from just a minor issue. All of my teachers used to tell me that a lot of musicians have had worse issues, so do not use it as an excuse. I’m glad you did not give up! You mentioned you played in concert band in 8th grade. Did most kids in Kuwait play an instrument? Well because I went to an international school, I am not sure. People did play an instrument at the international school. Ahhh, so that’s why your English is so good! Is it hard to get in there? Well, it is expensive. The reason I got in is because my uncle owns it. So I was lucky and got free tuition. Sometimes in life it is who you know, huh? Yes, exactly haha. I was very thankful to be in the international school, because I got to choose to pursue music and play piano as well as saxophone. And I use the piano to compose music, which I like to really do. I began composing music when I was in grade 10. Wow, you’re a composer. And I remember you saying that you did theatre, right? Oh yeah, I took music, drama, you name it. I was a really artistic person, yeah. But that’s usual for my family, especially on my mother’s side. They are very artistic and want me to play an instrument and do music. Anything you’d like to say to the other CESL students? If you want to do something, pursue your dream. But sometimes you should have a backup plan. My passion is music, but I am getting a degree in Chemical Engineering. Music does not offer much money, so I can have chemical engineering and also do music.

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Faisal sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Tamim Alzayer Hometown: Qatif, Saudi Arabia
Level: 7
Intended Major: Business Management Interviewed by: Faisal Dawood
What was your first impression when you arrived in Tucson? I was scared when I saw the desert, actually. How long have you been here in the U.S.? Since August 2015, but I lived in Missouri before I came to Tucson. Were you visiting someone in Missouri? I wanted to study there to be able to study at the same university as my brother, who studies at the University of Missouri in Columbia, but I had some issues so I moved to Tucson. Why did you choose Business Management as a major? Actually I was thinking about Engineering, but I talked to my father and he was telling me that he will open a new business and he told me that I like to manage things so why go to engineering? He influenced me by telling me not to limit my choices and to choose my major based on my character and what I like to do with my life and that’s why I changed it from Engineering to Business. Had you ever studied English before CESL? Yes, actually I went to London twice and I went to Dublin for summer camp, but still I was not able to get my TOEFL score. How did you like Dublin? I heard it is a beautiful city. It is beautiful! I really loved it. I went there when I was 17 with my two younger cousins and the people were really nice and helpful and I had one of the most amazing seven weeks of my life. What do you do in your free time? Play soccer, watch movies. What is your favorite movie genre? Comedy and action. I don’t really like drama and fantasy movies. Also I don’t like to watch horror movies because I don’t like to get scared. What is your favorite movie of all time? Ohhh, that’s a little bit hard to answer. I don’t have a specific movie, but off of the top of my head I would say Titanic. Thanks, Tamim!
