My favorite place is Chengdu, China, because there are so many delicious, spicy foods there. What are you going to study at the UofA? I am going to study MIS (Management Information Systems) at the university once I am finished at CESL.

Jingxian & Haibo

What is your favorite indoor or outdoor activity? I like running and playing badminton to stay active. If you could learn to do anything, what would you like to learn? SPRING 2, 2018 - WEEK 1

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Celso “Nhanga Santos Hometown: Luanda, Angola

Level: 7 Interviewed by: Hady Mambo Major: Civil Engineering & Project Management

Hello Celso, how are you? Hello Hady, I am very good, thanks. Can you please tell us a bit how you ended up here in Tucson, AZ, specifically at CESL? I got a scholarship from the US Embassy in my country on the Fulbright program and they were the ones who chose CESL for me. Although you have only been here e a couple days, how is this transition from living in Angola to here now going? The city is very calm, the people are very friendly, and it has been making me feel easy to adapt myself. Do you already have in mind some strategies on how to succeed both here at CESL and during your university studies? I am still working on it, even though I feel that time here goes very fast and I have to act faster on that. That is why, I adopted studying in the evening after my classes and early in the morning before my classes in order to better understand the material.

Hady & Nhanga

How different is the American culture compared to your culture? Are you facing any cultural shock since you've been here? I come from a conservative culture, which we almost always have a dress code, specially for places like school. For instance, at universities you will never see any girl wearing shorts nor professors wearing informal clothes (flip flops). What are your expectations with this scholarship? Well, it has been an unreal experience for me because it was my second time applying for this program. I have very high expectations in regard to my studies, but for now I have to improve my English so I can do better on the masters program I intend to do. What are some of the aspirations you have in life? Firstly, to be happy. Then, I would like to be the best in project managements and a researcher in energy efficiency. What are the things you usually do for fun here in Tucson? I have not had any fun time yet, but I am looking forward to this weekend to go out with some friends. Are you a first impression kinda person or you wait until you spend more time with people so you can have an idea about them? I do not like to judge people by the first impression, so having an idea about someone on first impressions is not my thing. I usually allow myself to know more about people and then see who that person really is in terms of character. (continued on next page) 7

~ Student Spotlight: Celso “Nhangaâ€? Santos (continued) ~ What are the most important things in life for you? Respect and persistence. If you were to organize a fun activity here at CESL, what that would be and why? A cultural activity, where everyone could come and make a presentation about their culture. Amazing and I am happy you came up with this idea because we already have an activity exactly like that. It is the international festival that occurs on spring 1 here at CESL. Is there a traditional dish in Angola that is known as the most traditional in the country ? Do you know how to make this food? Yes there is, and it is called funge. Yes I know how to make this dish. What is your favorite food? I would say funge, but I pretty much eat everything from my country (laughing) What is your favorite sport and why? I love basketball. I used to play basketball back home. Who is the person, who inspires you the most? My brother is the person who inspires me the most. What is your biggest fear? I am afraid that I will not achieve my goals and disappoint everyone I love. What are some of the biggest challenges you have ever faced and how did you overcome them? I literally had to leave my life back home to be here to get this opportunity and pursue my dreams. I had a job, was getting ready for my engagement but I had to leave it for later and it was one of the biggest challenges for me. I overcame it by having my family and my fiancĂŠe supporting me on this decision. Thanks for you Time, Nhanga, and good luck in your studies.
