FALL I 2015 - WEEK 6

Learning Advisor Tip of the Week! Have you ever sent an email to your teacher and never gotten a response? There may be a good reason why. Email writing is a skill. If you do not know how to write a good email, you will probably have a very difficult time trying to communicate with your teachers and professors. Here are a few points to remember before you send your next email! 1) Say hello! Don’t just start your email with a demand. Greet your professor with Hello…. or Dear… Also make sure to call your teacher by the correct name. The easiest way to do this is, Professor + their last name. 2) Ask politely. You should always request things with a question. Instead of saying, “Send me the homework assignment now,” you should say, “Could you please send me the homework assignment?” 3) Use the subject line. Teachers are busy! They don’t have much time to spend sorting through emails. Use the subject line to quickly explain what your email contains, rather than leaving it blank. 4) Sign your name. Your teacher will ignore your email if you don’t say who you are. 5) Be formal. Emails are not text messages. Spell your words correctly instead of using abbreviations (ex. You vs. u, please vs. plzzzzz). Writing a good email takes time. You need to be polite, respectful, and clear. Remember to also be patient when waiting for a response. Try following these rules, and communication with your teacher will become easier and friendlier. Below is a clear example of how you can do this.

FALL I 2015 - WEEK 6

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we interview CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 209).

Name:

Mohammed Talal (Marco)

Hometown:

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

What made you choose Tucson, AZ and why? I chose Tucson because the weather is similar to Saudi Arabia and I like to get tan, and also I heard it ranked high. I also heard that it is one of the best universities that has the most beautiful women. Also I wanted to move closer to my brother who lives in Phoenix. How did moving to America affect your life? First of all, it didn’t affect my life that much because I’m used to traveling a lot; my father is a pilot. I know a lot of cultures. Also because I’m a famous person here at CESL, it will be hard to be affected, as the Arabic saying goes: “the mountain cannot be shook by the wind”. If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be? If I could go back in time, I would go to France instead of America because I want to study French instead of my major. Also I would go to Spain to learn Spanish and watch Real Madrid matches. What makes you different than all the other students? I am the funny one at CESL and I am so active—I like to do everything even if it was something so hard because I am interested in trying stuff that others cannot do. What is your dream in life? My dream is to control the Saudi Arabian Airlines and make it better than all other airlines. That is the first thing that I will do.

FALL I 2015 - WEEK 6

Ask CESL Question: What is Tucson Meet Yourself? Answer: Tucson Meet Yourself is a 3-day festival that happens every fall here. There’s ethnic food, dance, music, and more from the diverse Tucson community. What can you do there? You can attend and enjoy all of the cultural events OR you can volunteer and work alongside other volunteers. What kind of food will be there? Turkish, Middle Eastern, Greek, Italian, Dutch, French, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, American, Mexican, Ethiopian, Indian, German, American BBQ, etc. Who will be there? CESL! CESL will have a booth there where you can volunteer. Also, check out everything Tucson has to offer; it’s a big event! How much is it? How do I get there? The festival is FREE to enter. You can get there by riding your bicycle or taking the streetcar downtown near Stone & Pennington. Parking is very difficult during the festival, but you can drive if you must.
