Name: Fatemh Al Sayegh
Hometown:
Mubarrak, Kuwait
Level: 6B
Nice to meet you. What are the things you’re interested in? Fashion, makeup, swimming, and things like this. I’m obsessed with makeup. Fun; why is that? In high school I watched a show called Fashionista. I would imitate my sister’s makeup and then realized that I was able to do it well. I watch YouTube videos about makeup to try new things. Every day, I spend an hour on my makeup. Sometimes I’ll do a simple look and other times more dramatic. I put it on because it changes my mood. If I’m sad, I put it on and I’ll feel better. So, what else about you? Why did you choose to stay in Tucson? In the beginning, I was alone and it was hard being by myself. I had to search for an apartment and pay for it right away. Being alone was teaching me responsibility. I was becoming self-sufficient because I had to cook, fix things, clean. I like this American way of being self-sufficient. What has your experience been with American culture? I love it so much. I like being in control of my decisions. I also like how people really ask about each other and they smile a lot.
Interviewed by Sophia Gonzalez
How else have you been encouraged by it? I want to do computer engineering at the university. People back home told me it’s very hard. They try to make me switch saying that it’s too hard. But I’m going to do it anyway. I really want to be a lawyer but my parents suggested computer engineering instead. I like problem solving, anyway, though. What kinds of problems do you want to solve? I want to work with students, married people, or even politicians. I want to come up with solutions for issues like the large number of divorces in my home country. The biggest problem I’d like to solve is close-mindedness. It’s too dangerous. The judgment that is placed on others is so bad, especially when eventually down the road, new changes become normal for everyone. They think I’m so liberal, but I think that it’s a good thing. I like freedom. I think it’s important for people to stop complaining about what other people are doing. It tires your heart to always be concerned with what others are doing. How did you come to this conclusion? The culture here opened my mind. Being alone to think for myself allowed me the opportunity to change my mind. I’m very thankful for this way of thinking.
