FALL 1 2014 - WEEK 4

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name:

Maya Erdenebat

Age:

23 Years old

Level:

60D

Where are you from?

Ulaan Batar, Mongolia

Neat! Is this your first time to America? How long have you been here? It is my first time but I have been here for a year. I spent the first 9 months hopping around from San Diego and San Francisco and ended up in Washington D.C. where I worked and met many Mongolians. I lived in the Arlington area and my apartment was full of Mongolians. Then I moved to Tucson to start CESL here.

What can you tell me about Mongolia? The temperatures in Mongolia can be +30 Celsius in the summer to -30 Celsius in the winter, resulting in Mongolian people being able to fit in anywhere from Tucson to Alaska. In the winter there is a traditional game when the river is frozen, kids wear big wool boots on the river and toss giant ice blocks towards each other and whoever’s block breaks first loses.

What about Mongolian cuisine? There is a dish called the Horhog – you put large hunks of meat and vegtables in an aluminum can with really hot stones and put the can on a fire. Then before/during/after the eating you toss the hot stone back and forth in your hands. It is said this helps with digestion and stuff.

Is Mongolia a secular country? Mongolia is secular but many people follow Buddhism or Shamanism which is what my family follows. Shamanism is hard for me to call a religion because it doesn’t have the three things I think are required for a religion; a holy book, a place of worship, or a specific god to worship. Instead we believe in connection to ancestors through a person called a Boo or Udgan.

So interesting. Can you tell me one of your favorite Mongolian phrases or sayings?

Interviewed by: DJ Nixon!

“Үгээр хунииг апте болно, Үгээр тууниит амьдрулже ч болно” It means “You can kill someone with words or you can strengthen them with words.” Which basically means be careful with your words and don’t speak without thinking.

Beautiful. Okay, enough about Mongolia – tell me what are some of your favorite hobbies? I enjoy swimming, hiking, horse riding, listening to music – pop music mostly.

What is your major?

Psychology or Anthropology, I haven’t decided yet.

What do you want to do with that? I would like to help people, specifically kids while they are growing up. My grandparents were teachers.

Do you have a favorite English phrase or word? CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
