FALL II 2015 - WEEK 4

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).

Name: Level:

Sameer Ben Abdulaziz 7C

Hometown:

Hadramout, Yemen

Why did you choose to learn English? English is the most popular language and you can use it to communicate with people all over the world. Also I would like to use it to attend the university here. If you could choose another language to learn after English, which would it be and why? French, it’s probably the next most common language after English. What is your favorite thing about Tucson? I love the weather and the desert because they remind me of my hometown. What do your family and friends think about you coming here to study? They are very excited because my country needs more people with knowledge of science, and I hope to gain that knowledge here and bring it back to my home country. What do you plan to study after you leave CESL? Pharmacy D, the track to work in a hospital. What is something other CESL students should know about where you’re from? The weather and desert are like my hometown. In my country we have mountains which are nice to climb, we have beautiful farmland, and lots of palm trees. We also have Shibam, the world’s 1st skyscraper (“the Manhattan of the desert”). Is there anywhere else in the U.S. you would like to visit? I would love to go to California and Florida.

Interviewed by Tanner Jean-Louis

Any advice for your fellow CESL students? Speak English as much as possible. Practice, practice, practice.

FALL II 2015 - WEEK 4

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name:

Hatim Hawari

Country:

Saudi Arabia

Level:

7

How is your country different and similar to United States of America? The schools there are not co-ed as they are here. It was a little weird when I came here; however, I already knew before coming here that schools are co-ed in the United States. How can you use what you learned here in your country? I can use all the English that I learned here in order to be unique and to earn a better degree. I can help people there who are having a hard time speaking English. Also I learned to be more responsible after my experience in the United States. What is your favorite book? The book is called Animal Rescue, and it talks about a woman that is trying to save animals that are almost extinct and endangered such as tigers. Interviewed by Ahmad Alhindawi

What are your hobbies in your free time? I like to read as many books as I can, and I also like to spend time with my brother and my family.

Where have you been in the world and where would you like to go? The first time I had ever traveled somewhere other than the Middle East, I came to America. I would like to go to Turkey and after that visit Cyprus to look at the beautiful ruins and nature. Any message to CESL? I would like to thank CESL because they taught me how to speak English and use it with people who speak it. Keep up the good work!

FALL II 2015 - WEEK 4

Ask CESL Where can I get medical treatment? You will most likely go to Campus Health for most of your medical needs, it is cheaper than a hospital or clinic, and is covered by campus health insurance. If you have a real emergency, you should go to an emergency room at a hospital, the closest one to campus is at the University of Arizona Medical Center, 1501 N Campbell Ave, or call 911. What services are available at campus health? In addition to check-ups and other medical appointments, Campus Health offers psychological and psychiatric services (CAPS), preventative medicine education, an over-the-counter pharmacy (cheaper than CVS or Walgreens), and immunizations. Flu season is coming up, so make sure to get your flu shot if you haven’t yet. Why should I get the flu shot? The flu spreads very easily and can make you sick for days or even weeks. If you catch the flu, you may miss a lot of your CESL classes, and spread the flu to your friends causing them to do the same. How much does a flu shot cost? The vaccine is available at campus health for $20, but most insurance policies will cover the cost for you. Do I need to make an appointment ahead of time at campus health? You do not need to make an appointment for a flu shot; you can just stop by. Most other clinical and counseling services require you to make an appointment ahead of time. You can do so by calling (520) 621-9202 or online at www.health.arizona.edu. I really want to make sure that I don’t get the flu and be able to recognize it and treat it if I do. Where can I get more information? You can learn more about how to prevent the flu, recognize the symptoms, and treat the illness at https://www.health.arizona.edu/flunews.htm. CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
