How long have you been in Tucson and how do you like it so far? I have been here for six months and I really like it here. People are very friendly and the weather is just amazing. What are your plans after finishing CESL? I will start my degree in electronics engineering at the University of Central Missouri. What do you do in your free time here in Tucson? I really do not have that much time because I have a lot to do, but whenever I do have some free time I like to watch movies. What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is Indian food.
What is your favorite movie?
Ghost Rider.
What do you want to be in the future? I want to be an engineering professor. What are some of the places that you recommend people to visit in Saudi Arabia? Jubail industrial city and Abha. What are some of the places that you have visited in the U.S so far?

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name: Saud Alanazi Hometown: Saudi Arabia Age: 25 Level: 40 Hi Saud, how long have you been here? I have been in America for 1 year and I have been at CESL the whole time. What is your major? Safety engineer.

And what exactly does a safety engineer do? Its hard to specifically say but for example, when a new building gets build I decide where the exits will be, the staircases, doors and how the doors must open. For my major I have to study things like architecture, fire science, and basic psychology.

Nice! Sounds interesting. So what will you do after CESL? I will study at Mesa Community College - after two more sessions here, maybe next August. And then get a good job in a big company back in my country. How have you liked Tucson so far? Tucson is good for studying and the people make it fun, but there isn't a lot to do here! But the people make it fun.

What are some of your hobbies? I like to play soccer, FIFA video games, and meet new people from different cultures.

Was there something that you experienced when you first got here that you could call 'Culture Shock'? Not too much culture shock - I already knew a lot from the internet and having friends that have lived here for years, but it was very interesting how people here seem to look for a plan on the weekends. The weekend is sacred here. Back home the weekend is more for relaxing and sleeping but here people are always planning and looking for something interesting to do.

The weekend is sacred; I like that and believe it to my core! What countries have you visited? I have been to Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Bahrain, Jordan, Dubai, Kuwait... Interesting. Can you tell me a little about the traditional Saudi dress? It is called the thawb - it is only for the men. It is a long white dress. Over our heads we wear a smagh which has a red and white pattern. Under the thawb we wear white pants made of white material. It is very comfortable.

Did you bring yours to Tucson? When do you wear it? I did and I wear it during the International Festival or after Ramadan during Eid. Back home you can wear it as you like. I would say about 80% of Saudis wear it everyday, but I wear it whenever I want to. Cool. Last question: Is there an Arabic or Saudi expression that you like, or that you haven't heard in English?

The whole University of Arizona is short on space at the moment, yet the U of A's reputation as a world-class university means more interest and larger student enrollment every year. In fact, many universities across the United States find themselves with not enough classroom space because their student populations are growing.
!
Why are student populations growing so much? Because more people are going to university these days, both domestic and international students. English as a Second Language schools that are part of universities, like CESL, often seek space in external spaces like community centers and churches to accommodate this increase in enrollment. We hope to have a big new building someday in the near future. For now, we are working with our partners outside of the university to offer space for our classes.
