FALL II 2014 - WEEK 8

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name: Camila Loeffler Carapajo

Hometown:

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Age:

20

Level: 60

Hi Camila, everyone knows you are the most beautiful and well-liked person at CESL. How do you deal with that pressure? Haha, I know you are joking. Okay, how long have you been in Tucson? What do you think about it? I have been here for 4 months, I think it is a very nice city. It is very calm compared to Rio, Rio is crazy with people everywhere and cars and subways everywhere. In Tucson you need car though, because things are so far apart. What do you study? I study civil engineering. In civil engineering you study how to build bridges, buildings, and houses — any kind of construction. So what is the difference between civil engineering and architecture? The architect does the design of a building, a civil engineer prepares the foundation and pillars and such. We start from the beginning to the top. What do you miss about Brazil (besides family)? I can't go out or to the bars because I am underage. In Brazil every weekend I would go to jazz concerts in the streets and drink with my sister, talking or going to bars. I would go to La Pa which is a famous place where everything stays open until 5 AM. I also miss how close everything was in Rio. The beach was 30 minutes by subway, the mall is really close and you can go anywhere by subway. Jazz concerts in the street? Sounds cool. Which jazz artists do you like? I listen to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Grant Green. I play piano, but not jazz piano, classical piano. I haven't played at Music Club because I am too shy. Cool. So what do you do in your free time here? I hang out and meet people at the Level — Brazilian and Arabic friends. I like to go shopping or watch a good movie/series.

Interviewed by: DJ Nixon

What is something that surprised you about American culture? I noticed Americans are "cold" people. When I am in the elevator I will say "bye" or "have a good day" when I step out and no one will reply to me, or sometimes people won't hug... unless they are drunk! Brazilians are "hot" because its our culture, we want to treat you well. Is this the first time you have left home? Yeah! I thought it would be hard but I am handling it well. I call my family every day and my parents are coming to visit next year. What is your plan for the upcoming vacation? My sister arrives tomorrow, so Sunday we will go to New York, spend Christmas in Tucson, and then go to the Grand Canyon, and New Years Eve in Las Vegas with all the Brazilians; I think 20 or more are going. It is my sister's first time to America. She is my best friend and I am excited to show her around. Family for me is the most important thing. What is your plan for next semester? I am waiting for my endorsement and if it is okay I will go the U of A! I am excited. Cool! As this session's last and most important student spotlight, is there anything you'd like to say to your fellow students? I would like to tell everyone to keep working hard to achieve their goals, and to be successful and happy in personal and professional life! Beautiful! Thanks. CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
