What do you want to be in the future? I am hopping to be an international businessman. After you finish the university, will you work in the U.S or in another country? Actually after I finish the university, I will go to China and teach English there.

SUMMER 2015 - WEEK 4
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, please talk to the Student Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 209).
Name: Anisa Alasaeed Hometown: Qtuf, Saudi Arabia Level: 2 How long have you been in the U.S.? 6 months, but I have been studying in CESL for only one month. How do you like Tucson so far? Oh yes, very much! The people are very friendly and smiley and willing to help the international people, but the weather is very bad especially during Ramadan.
Interviewed by Ann Turinawe
Where else have you been in the U.S.? I lived in Pennsylvania for 4 months studying English at Marywood University. And were you working or studying in Saudi Arabia before you moved here for school? I was a social worker in a hospital and I learned conversational English (but not formal English or grammar) from the hospital patients from Lebanon and Jordan because they spoke in English. That’s really cool, so then you decided to come to the States to learn formal English? Yes, I would like to receive a master’s degree in social work. Wonderful! So you said that you studied English in Pennsylvania? Yes! But my brother had studied here in Arizona and said that the program was very good. He said his English improved in 4 months! Now, he is studying mechanical engineering in Oklahoma. And what do you hope to get out of your studies here at CESL? I want to learn more grammar and then get my master’s degree. I have been here for only a month, yet I can already write a whole paragraph! And the teachers are very nice.

SUMMER 2015 - WEEK 4
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name: Level:
Mujtaba Al-Sadeq Bridge
Hi Mujtaba, how are you?
Age: Hometown:
20 Qatif, Saudia Arabia
I'm good thanks, and you?
Great! How long have you been here? I've been at CESL for about 7 months and I started at level 50. Now I am in Bridge. It isn't hard but it is a lot of work. What are your plans afterwards? I am going to go to the University here to study Chemical Engineering. I already have the endorsement. What surprised you about Tucson? Before I came I was told it was a desert, but it is raining in the summer! A desert with rain in the summer, this is weird. The first night I got here it was New Years Eve, and it was snowing! It was my first time seeing snow in my entire life - the snow welcomed me to Tucson! Wow! Yes, Tucson is a weird desert. What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy taking pictures and shooting films. I like taking pictures of nature and people and I like filming short films and documentaries. I started photography at the age of 7 because my older brother is a photographer. My younger brother is a photographer too.
Interviewed by DJ Nixon
Speaking of your younger brother, he is here at CESL for a month for the Teen Program, right!? What are you going to show him in Tucson? Yes! Mt. Lemmon, Old Tucson, and we are planning to go to San Diego. It will be our first time. Asides from your family, what do you miss about home? Friends, food, everything. The city… I live on an island called Tarout Island, so I miss fishing and playing soccer with my friends. There are two bridges to my island from the mainland. What surprised you about American people? They are friendly! More so than in my city… We have friendly people of course but if you just talk to a stranger they will ask you "what is wrong with you?" Here people will talk to strangers and ask "how are you?" I also lived in Chico, California for 1 1/2 years. I like it there; it is really green and beautiful, especially this place Bidwell Park. I saw bears there! Whoa, if you could be an animal for a day what would you be? I would be a canary. I like their voice and the whistle. I would fly around and make beautiful sounds. Thank you. Before we wrap up, do you have a message for CESL? The Bridge program is really helpful for students who want to go study at the U of A, and I want to thank all of my teachers for all their help and supporting me!

SUMMER 2015 - WEEK 4
Ask CESL Question: Tucson is boring. What is there to do here? Answer: Change your perspective. Tucson is different than your hometown. It’s different than LA, NYC, San Francisco, and any other place you have been. People live here for a reason—find out for yourself why Tucson is a fun place to live. Something is special here, you would NOT want to miss out on it. Get curious. Look up weekly events. Go to Google (that should already be your favorite website). Type in “Tucson events”. Explore your options. Attend the most interesting event for you. Tucson has events that are free, low cost, or even expensive. Choose the event that fits your price range and go to that event. Some of our favorites are “Free Movies at Reid Park”, “Free Game Night” at Bookmans on Ina Rd., and 2nd Saturdays where you walk around downtown every second Saturday of the month with lots of other people and see art. Find a friend who loves exploring Tucson. If you have an adventurous friend who loves to explore, you will most likely have a lot of fun with this person. They will already know cool places to go and want to share their experience with you. Just ask anyone if they like living in Tucson; if they say “yes”, ask them about something interesting to do! Follow an Instagram about Tucson. For example, #whyilovewhereilive is a great Instagram hashtag (#) that shows the beautiful places of Tucson. Get inspired to visit those places.
Free movies at Reid Park!
Be creative. Instead of simply going to a park, bring along a basketball to play with friends who may or may not know how to play basketball. Let the game get crazy. Or you can bring paint or colored pencils to work on art. Make a picnic of really good foods, too. You could make yourself a scavenger hunt game with friends around the city or even in a bookstore to find the most interesting book there. It’s all about trying new things at first. Bottom line—any city is what you make of it!
