SUMMER 2015 - WEEK 3
Learning Advisor Tip of the Week! Midterms are right around the corner, and even though you have a long weekend ahead of you, it’s time to start studying! Tests can be stressful, so the best thing to do is manage your time and take care of your health. Here are a few tips to help you do the best you can next week. Good luck! -‐
Don’t wait until the last minute to study or talk to your teacher. If you have any doubts NOW is the time to ask your teachers.
-‐
Re-read your notes for 15 minutes a day. This will help you remember the material that is most important from your classes.
-‐
Study with a friend and go over material together. This can be a time to share ideas, notes, and quiz each other. Also, if you speak in only English, it will be great practice for your OC class.
-‐
Eat a healthy dinner the night before. Make sure your meal includes protein and lots of vegetables.
-‐
Get enough sleep. This may not seem like it’s that important, but if you have to choose between getting a good night’s sleep and studying for an extra 5 hours late at night, choose sleep!

SUMMER 2015 - WEEK 3
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 209).
Name:
Shaden
Level:

Hometown:
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Occupation:
Lawyer
What do you like about Tucson? The people and the sky. I like the colors. What do you do in your free time? Sometimes I study, meet my friends, or travel. Where do you go? California. I go for the shopping or to see my friends. What’s important for people to know about you? I like people who are respectful, happy, helpful, who make me feel comfortable by saying what they need to say in front of me rather than behind my back, and who I can see helping others. Helping people means that you have a good personality. How would you change the world?
Interviewed by Sophia Gonzalez
No war. No military. No weapons anywhere. I would also like to see women all over the world take their rights and to see no more poor people. Being in the US, have you learned any new ideas? Yes, lots! **pulls out full list of thoughts from her phone** A few ideas: 1. Don’t lose your time on criticism of other people—use that energy for yourself. 2. Don’t say no to silly ideas. 3. Parents in the US interact more often with their children. If their child wants to go do something, they will go with them to do it. Parents seem to be more patient with children here. 4. Americans say thank you so much, for everything! In Saudi Arabia, generosity and hospitality are so normal that we don’t say thank you for when a waiter brings food to the table or when someone invites us in. I will probably say thank you a lot when I go back. At the same time, that’s one thing that Americans might do too much. When Americans thank me for hospitality, it’s like thanking a friend for not stealing your phone when you stepped away for a second. It’ll be interesting to see how I take both of these ideas into consideration.

What is the first thing you noticed in America that was different from Kuwait? I noticed that there is more freedom and different kinds of people here.
You are a very energetic and social person, were you like that as a kid too? I’ve been energetic ever since I was a kid and that will never change because it is the reason I am social.
You always talk about how you’ve been to many countries and states, where have you been? I first went to Turkey by myself when I was only 14 years old. I went to Syria, Malaysia, Mexico, and Germany. I’ve also been to California, Texas, Florida, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado and New Mexico. I’m planning to travel all around the world.
You’ve been reading a lot of books, what was the last book you finished and what was it about? The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks. It talks about a love story.
What major are you planning on pursuing after CESL? I plan on pursuing Mechanical Engineering because I loved it as a child through my father. I also worked at a mechanic shop, which is something I would love to do.
Interviewed by Ahmad Alhindawi
You are surrounded with a lot of people from different cultures, what have you learned? I learned how to use chopsticks from my Chinese friends. I also learned new words in Spanish, Japanese and Italian. No bad words *wink*
Describe yourself in one word. Energetic.

SUMMER 2015 - WEEK 3
Ask CESL Question: What is the 4th of July? Answer: The 4th of July, also known as Independence day, celebrates when the United States of America declared independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776 and started the Revolutionary War. This “birthday” of America is a national holiday. The celebration usually has fireworks, a lot of traditional foods like hot dogs and hamburgers, and everyone wears red, white, and blue!
