production facility at its Austrian plant in Schörfling. The new hollow fiber spinning plant predominantly produces membrane modules for efficient nitrogen generation and for process gases. Nitrogen accounts for roughly 40 percent of the estimated global gas separation market, making it the second-largest market after natural gas. In Schörfling, Evonik currently produces gas separation modules predominantly for the biogas market and helium recovery. The new hollow fiber spinning plant doubles the existing production capacities for SEPURAN membranes. In total, Evonik has invested an amount in the mid double-digit million euro range in the expansion of the Austrian plant. Besides the new hollow fiber spinning plant, additional facilities have been created for technology development, application technology, membrane testing and quality assurance. Over 30 new jobs have been created in production and administration. The company’s plant in Lenzing near the Schörfling site manufactures the source material polyimide, a high-performance polymer, which is spun and then further processed in Schörfling. The infrastructure in Lenzing is being correspondingly upgraded as part of site expansion.
Compliance without Compromise for Sulfuric Acid Plants Copenhagen, Denmark: As emissions standards for sulfur continue to tighten, sulfuric acid plant operators look for ways to stay compliant, without lowering production targets, venturing into costly revamps or tail gas treatment with scrubbers. One solution is more active SO2 oxidation catalysts, and with the introduction of Haldor Topsoe’s new LEAP5TM catalyst this option has become reality.
The new VK-711 LEAP5TM catalyst has been optimized for higher activity at lower temperatures. This translates into reduced operational costs as well as the choice of maintaining the same production level with lower emissions or increasing productivity without increasing emissions. “By installing the new catalyst, we have improved conversion to produce more sulfuric acid with no additional consumption of raw materials. The improved profitability should pay back the additional cost of the LEAP5TM catalyst in two years. In addition to the financial return on the investment we have also reduced SO2 emissions from the plant,” says a representative from Incitec Pivot Limited’s sulphuric acid plant in Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. The new VK-711 LEAP5TM catalyst allows operation from temperatures as low as 3700C and is an obvious choice for operators of single absorption sulfuric acid plants who want to achieve unprecedented conversion 8 • November 2017

Plastics Industry Welcomes Reduction in GST Rates Mumbai, India: Plastics Industry, dominated by SME manufacturers,
has welcomed the reduction in GST rates across the spectrum of products from 28% to 18%. Plastics products such as plastics floorings, fabrics, furniture, vacuum flasks bath and sanitary fittings and many other miscellaneous plastics products (not specified elsewhere) will be charged a GST of 18%. The industry is happy with the removal of anomalies as it will benefit the end-consumers and also keep the manufacturers competitive in Indian market. The plastics industry is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the rationalization of GST rates announced by the government last week. Explained K K Seksaria, President, Plastindia Foundation, “The removal of anomalies in GST rates on plastics items is a right step taken by the government. The pinch of 28% was felt across the industry and manufacturers were finding it difficult to stay competitive. We are thankful to the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, Finance Minister, Shri Arun Jaitley and the members of GST Council and all state finance ministers for this reduction. Indeed, continuous persuasion by industry leaders from Plastindia Foundation, its founder members and all stakeholders with political and bureaucracy leadership involved in the decision of GST rates has benefited the entire industry and common man.” Plastindia Foundation is the apex body of Plastics industry in India and has been taking up the issue of the impact of high GST rates with 10 • November 2017
the government having made several representations to DCPC, central government, state governments, GST Council, political leaders, etc ever since the GST rates were announced in May this year. Several industry players were relieved by government’s decision. V K Taparia, Chairman of Plastindia Foundation's sub- committee on GST and Executive Director of Supreme Industries Limited said, “We commend the Government on taking the right decision to bring all products of Plastics, which are primarily for the use of the common man at 18% GST, which is also the GST for Plastics raw materials. This will also avoid anomalies and increase compliances. Plastic products will become affordable for the common man, thereby reducing his burden, allowing him to make his life more comfortable” Mr. Surender Chowdhury and Shri Jayesh Rambhia, the plastics industry stalwarts who regularly took up the case of rationalization of GST rates said , "The decision to reduce GST on plastics products will positively impact consumer’s ability to manage household expenses better. Over 40,000 SME players in plastics also heaved a sigh of relief on announcement of reduction in GST rates. "
BASF Forms Partnerships to Introduce Nutritional Solutions that Enhance Poultry Vitality in South Asia Mumbai, India: BASF SE, one of the leading companies in the animal
nutrition industry through BASF South East Asia Pte Ltd. and Vital Therapeutics Pvt. Ltd, a leading manufacturer of vitamin premixes and veterinary formulations in India, have entered a strategic partnership to bring a new choline chloride product to the feed industry in India and the rest of South Asia. The two companies will provide a range of choline chloride powder formulations to address specific market needs. Vital Therapeutics will launch the new choline chloride products at Poultry India Expo, held from November 22 to 24, in Hyderabad, India. India to become the Global Manufacturing Hub for Specialty Chemicals Specialty chemicals, which comprise high value, low volume chemicals with specific applications, are a significant part of the Indian chemical industry, which is today valued at USD 25 billion according to industry analysts. The industry has already delivered 13 per cent growth over the past five years led by domestic consumption. With increasing demand for value added high performance products in all spheres of life domestically, the demand for specialty chemicals that add such functionalities to products is expected to grow backed by a relatively strong GDP growth outlook. At the same time, a shift of manufacturing to the East and the rise of India as an export hub is expected to further cement India’s position as a manufacturing base for specialty chemicals to cater to markets abroad. A glimpse of India’s emergence as a major export player is already seen in segments such as agrochemicals and colorants, in which a significant portion of India’s products are exported.
T
he growth for specialty chemicals is driven by both domestic consumption and exports. Domestically, specialty chemicals finding applications across consumer, industrial and infrastructure segments are further propelled by the overall growth of the Indian economy. The growth of the agrochemical segment has a strong correlation to the growth of the rural economy. In other segments, such as agrochemicals, flavours and fragrances, dyes and pigments, a significant portion of the production in India is sent out to markets abroad. Exports have risen rapidly as India is fast becoming a dominant manufacturing hub for such chemicals. Tightening environmental norms in developed countries and a slowdown in certain segments by China are contributing to the increase in exports from the Indian market. The government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative is and the consequent flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) to this sector expected to help accelerate India’s journey to emerge as a manufacturing hub for the chemicals industry in a few years.
12 • November 2017
Trends in the Segment Regulatory and environmental factors: Developed markets have tightened their import regulations due to environmental concerns and also to safeguard interests of their domestic manufacturers. The regulation which has had the greatest impact on exports from India is the European Union’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), which came into effect on 1st June 2007 and addresses the production and use of chemicals and their potential impact on the environment and human health. A significant impact of REACH is expected with the implementation of Phase 3, which is slated to come into force by 1st June 2018 and would dictate the regulatory standards for any chemical supplied to EU at quantities of 1 tons p.a. or more. REACH is aimed at increasing the safety, health and environmental compliance lookout of chemicals manufacturers supplying to EU, and as a result affecting the underlying process costs. While most scaled up exporters are already underway to become REACH compliant, mid to small scale Indian companies are likely to find this difficult to achieve. This would result in the well prepared companies to gain an edge
over the rest of the players and would be a critical source of differentiation. Shift of production to Asia As a result of tighter environmental norms in the west, many MNCs are focusing on Asia, particularly India and China, as their manufacturing hubs. Coupled with a lower cost of production and abundant availability of skilled manpower in Asian countries, the shift has been more lucrative for companies. This is particularly evident in the relatively standardized products with low differentiation, such as textile chemicals and dyes and pigments, wherein IP protection isn’t seen as a significant threat. A recent drive to tighten pollution control norms in China have led to multiple plant shutdowns in the country in chemicals and other manufacturing segments. As a result of this, Indian chemical manufacturers have benefited from production shift to India, especially seen in segments such as Dyes and Pigments. M&A activity on the rise M&A activity in this sector has been abuzz with players being driven by several strategies. Chemical Engineering World

CEW Features Going forward, inbound M&A are anticipated to be more rampant than outbound and domestic transactions. Several MNCs have been present in India for some time (Bayer, BASF, Nalco, Clariant, Huntsman, etc.) and are considering both organic and inorganic strategies to capture the growing opportunity in this space. Some Indian companies (Dorf Ketal, Kiri, UPL etc.) have acquired companies overseas to expand their presence. There have also been a number of acquisitions by other Indian companies (Rallis, Oriental Aromatics, Coromandel International, etc.) to expand their product offerings and also grow their India footprint. As ambitions and opportunities expand, heightened levels of M&A interest by players is being witnessed across the spectrum of specialty chemical players. The increased globalisation of the sector, sustained market opportunities and the emergence of Indian leaders are combining to create an ideal concoction for specialty chemicals industry to blossom. Challenges Despite the demand side growth drivers, there are still several hurdles for the industry. While some are segment specific issues, there are three overarching challenges the sector is faced with – commoditization, fragmentation and lack of scale and regulations. Commoditization: Globally, the specialty chemicals industry is usually separated from bulk chemicals by extensive R&D and innovation. However, such a differentiation is almost non-existent in the India due to the ‘genericized’ nature of the Indian specialty chemicals industry. Several older products in the sector have already been commoditized or are at risk of lacking any differentiation features. Specialty chemical manufacturers need to strengthen their focus on niche applications and product innovation in 16 • November 2017
order to protect their margins and carve a brand value. Fragmented industry structure with few large Indian players: Most players operating in India are still small in scale operating at a low level. On the global platform, however, there is significant level of concentration. Most segments in India witness a dominating effect of a few global leaders who have made inroads. This has implications on the competitiveness Indian players can offer. Only a few Indian players have been able to scale or build capabilities to compete with the global giants in terms of product development and innovation. As the global companies look to enter and strengthen their presence in the Indian market, they will also invest in distribution, marketing and production systems that local companies may find hard to match.
Agrochemicals - India is the fourth largest manufacturer of agrochemicals after the USA, Japan and China. Decreasing arable land, increasing global population and consequent requirement to improve crop yields have driven up the demand for specialty chemicals in this segment. Flavours & Fragrances - Increasing acceptance of natural flavours and fragrance ingredients globally is beneficial for Indian players as India is one of the leading suppliers of natural ingredients. India accounts for 30% of the world’s production of F&F ingredients resulting in the export of almost 85% of the domestic production. Personal care - The Indian market for personal care active ingredients grew at 12% CAGR, from USD 0.1 bn in 2009 to USD 0.3 bn in 2014. Over the next five years the industry is expected to grow at 15% to reach USD 0.5 bn by 2019..
Regulations: The cost of compliance might make operations increasingly economically unviable for smaller players. Only a handful of players have been able to meet and overcome challenges to build leadership positions. The ability to scale up, offer differentiated products through innovation, implementing an effective marketing and sales strategy while simultaneously maintaining high levels of regulatory standards clearly separate winners from the rest of the crowd in this space. Segment Attractiveness Across the specialty chemical segments, we clearly see emergent leaders outperforming their peers on the back of differentiated and niche offerings. Agrochemicals, Flavours and Fragrances (F&F) and Personal Care have emerged as the three most attractive sectors in. Characterized by strong product differentiation/specialization and strong end industry growth, agrochemicals and F&F have a large market to cater to.

Effective Condensate & Flash Steam Recovery in the Chemical Industries Condensate and flash steam recover y in chemical industr y is always a big challenge may be due to lack of knowledge about condensate commercial value, remote locations of chemical units inside the plant and potential contamination chances of condensate. Being one of the purest forms of water and rich heat source, captive utilization of condensate in the units or as makeup to cooling tower should be avoided. Recover y of condensate using steam operated condensate transfer pump instead of conventional electrical pump for pure condensate and using condensate contamination detection system for potential prone to impure condensate ensures effective utility cost reduction.
I
n India, typical condensate recovery in chemical and pharmaceutical industries ranges between 30 to 55per cent. Average direct steam consumption, this means that knowingly or unknowingly, around 35 to 70 per cent of the condensate, along with significant quantity of heat is being drained to increase the load of the effluent treatment plant (ETP).
Affecting the Condensate Recovery Following factors play a vital role that becomes hinderance in recovering the condensate.
Energy cost is the major concern in Indian industries as it directly affects the bottom line of the plant economy. Steam being one of the most widely used utility, the maximum utilization of the steam and effective recovery of the remaining heat in the form of condensate is a need of an hour to survive and grow in the market.
•
• • •
Remotely located units in the plant Less quantity of condensate making it practically non-feasible to recover Scarcity of the water thereby imposing the use of condensate locally Lack of knowledge about the value of condensate
Out of all the above and many more, “Lack
of Knowledge” about the condensate ranks the first. Even at most of the industries, it has been observed that the condensate is stored in the tank outside the unit and pumped electrically to cater the make-up water demand of the nearby cooling towers. This not only wastes the pure condensate with its associated heat energy but also result in increasing the load on the cooling tower itself...!!! The recovery of the condensate can be classified into two simple categories: 1. Pure Condensate Recovery 2. Prone to be Impure Condensate Recovery
Also, generally, in India, location of chemical industries is in the remote, where water is always one of the scarcest utility to make it available. Even though the borewell or ground water is one of the option, its hardness and TDS is always a big concern as it not only increases the chemical and other treatment costs but also creates major damages due to scaling. Hence, being important WR to its importance as a purest form of water as well as rich source of heat energy, it is inevitable to recover the condensate. 18 • November 2017
Figure 1: Chemical Engineering World
CEW Features the condensate by means of steam or compressed air operated condensate transfer pump. A simple level transmitter based make-up water controlling system with negligible investment may pay very high returns in terms of avoiding the unnecessary intake of cold water intake. Proposed system of the effective flash steam and condensate recovery and ensuring its proper mixing in the boiler feed tank may be schematically represented is shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2:
1) Pure Condensate Recovery This is feasible where steam is used for indirect heating the process fluid and virtually no chances of product or system generated contaminations observed. Typical applications include the condensate recovery from Fluid Bed Dryer (FBD), Hot Water Generation (HWG) systems, Hot water batteries, first effect of the Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE) for ETP Unit, etc. Few chemical industries have separate arrangement for steam coils and other process fluids like chilled water, cooling water, brine, hot water, etc, from which the pure condensate may be collected. Conventional System Conventionally, the condensate generated after indirect heating is collected in the tank located normally outside the unit and finally pumped to the feed water tank in the boiler house or any relevant desired location. The schematic of the same is shown in Figure 1. As schematically represented, huge amount of heat energy is wasted due to improper handling of flash steam, ie, generated due to considerable highpressure condensate getting exposed to atmospheric pressure. Improper mixing of 20 • November 2017
the hot condensate with the cold makeup water into the feed water tank also contributes to significant heat loss. Also, unnecessary make-up water intake caters to considerable amount of cooling of the condensate in the feed water tank and it becomes important to address the same in order to minimize captive consumption of steam in the feed water tank. Major Areas of Concern in the Conventional System • No flash steam recovery, which contributes to around 40 to 50 per cent of the heat content in the flash steam • High operating cost due to running of electrical pump • High maintenance cost of the electrical pump being mechanical in operation as well as due to handling of condensate with high temperature • High capital cost due to requirement of tank with insulation, electrical pumps (at least 1 working and 1 standby) with proper weatherproof covering Recommendation for the Pure Condensate It is highly recommended to generate and utilize the flash steam by using the properly sized flash vessel and recover
Significance of the Steam-operated Condensate Recovery System • Intrinsically safe for use in hazardous areas. • No electricity required - negligible operating costs. • Single spring design and no rotating parts ensures balance movement of float due to uniform expansion/ contraction. • Only movable part - minimum chances of failure. • All stainless-steel internals give excellent corrosion resistance for long trouble-free service. • Negligible cost of operation. • No maintenance costs.
Figure 3: Chemical Engineering World
CEW Features is either product contamination (like process fluid – HF, Lye, Oxalate, Chelates, etc) or the corrosion of the pipes like oxides of Iron (Fe 2O 3, FeO) or minerals, etc. Normally, condensate, being one of the purest forms of water, has negligible or very less conductivity. However, after contamination, the conductivity increases in multiples. When the conductivity increases beyond minimum acceptable limit (normally termed as a set point of the PID controller), the controller signals to divert or drain the impure condensate thereby eliminating the chances to get it into the boiler system.
Figure 4:
2) Recovery of the Condensate Prone to be Impure The major concern of most of the industries lies in utilizing the condensate from the process equipment, which, due to its process chemicals or even the process operations, is very much susceptible to get contaminated. Chemical reactors, jacketed vessels, vapour collected from multiple effect evaporator (usually 2 nd effect onwards), chemical processes heating to highly acidic products or intermediaries (eg, HF heating, Oxalate warm bath, etc). Factors Resisting the Contaminated Condensate to Drain to ETP • Due to huge number of reactors, high quantum of condensate and its associated heat energy may get wasted. • Draining the condensate to ETP increases load on the ETP thereby increases effluent treatment cost. • Mixing of high temperature condensate in the ETP increases the efforts to cool down to desired temperature prior to treating it. 22 • November 2017
•
Stringent government norms limit the quantum of liquid discharge from the plant. This also increases the number of processes required to treat the effluent.
Typically, the prone to impure condensate is drained locally. The schematic of the same is shown in Figure 3. Recommendation for the Potential Impure Condensate Looking towards the commercial value of the condensate getting drained due to fear of probable contamination, it is recommended to install a highly reliable, efficient yet costeffective system that will help to collect and transfer the good quality of condensate and divert or drain the contaminated condensate which may go to drain or for the further treatment of purification. Condensate Contamination Detection System (CCDS) It is a system, ie, based on the simple principle of change in the conductivity of the condensate when it is pure or contaminated. Normally, the contamination
Significant of the Condensate Contamination Detection System • Can differentiate and handle contamination even upto few micro Siemens (µS). • Recovered condensate followed by properly installed condensate and flash steam recovery system virtually recovers complete mass and heat content in the condensate. • Fully automatic system, no manual intervention needed. • If required, system cleaning or maintenance can be done online. Proposed System with Condensate Contamination Detection System Practically, by installing the condensate contamination detection system, is shown in Figure 4, condensate recovery may be increased from 15 to 40 per cent even. The typical payback ranges from couple of months to less than a year depending upon the condensate load, chances of contamination and the severity of the contamination. ◘

Expert Alarm Management and Guidance System Trends Harnessing Newest Technology Introduction In Process Automation, an advanced alarm management could be harnessed to improve the plant performance & enhance safety by quicker and appropriate responses while preventing spurious plant trips and preventive maintenance. The challenges in the alarm management continue even with Modern Automation Systems, number of alarm configurations and display are virtually unlimited leading to poor alarm management. Inefficient alarm management can lead to serious consequences in operation of plants.
T
oday’s modern control systems, mostly standard software components, enable us to create alarms that are flexible and with no incremental cost. The combination of flexibility and economy has resulted in one unintentional & undesired by-product — alarm overload. In fact, the mindset “if it costs nothing, why not alarm it?” becomes an easy trap to fall into. However, excessive alarms could deprive the operator’s attention to the really serious alarms while he is distracted by “not so critical” type of alarms. Poor alarm management can lead to serious consequences in operation of plants. Expert alarm management system (EAMS) is user friendly and, provides opportunity to improve currently available alarm systems. It is preferred as guidance tool to identify the root cause of an alarm condition by traversing the decision / fault trees. These can be particularly useful in developing countries and plants where the operators may not be well versed with complete operation processes and in the process plants with latest technology in which operation skill set is still not much available. The ease of plant operation in the presence of Expert alarm management and guidance system provides opportunity to improve currently available plant alarm systems. Also, considering the importance of increasing standardization and consolidation activities across the globe, various bodies like ISA, EEMUA, IEC

In process plants, alarm systems are used to alert the Operators and plant personal of the abnormal process conditions or equipment defects. In conventional alarms system before adoption of Distributed control system (DCS), visual and audible indication on Panel board were available and restricted because of space limitation and cost. With growing flexibility and increased facility available in DCS, various tools are developed to aid personnel operating and maintaining the plants. In this context, now-a-days to aid the operator and also build intelligence into alarm system, an expert guidance system is introduced as a part of alarm management system. This shall facilitate the operator to play a pivotal role in operator decision making and requires the information empowerment. The EAMS shall free the operator from tedious or repetitive tasks and shall give more time to focus and make intelligent decisions that improve productivity and plant performance. • Graphic Tree Module These trees provide the operator graphical representation of fault Trees & the traversal of tree logic for an Alarm with cause / probability.
• Recommend operator actions • Operator guidance messages Features of EAMS Main Alarm analysis application tracks different alarms generated in control systems and keeps track of all the process values that are required to perform alarm analysis. Only configured alarms & process points are tracked in the system, hence non critical alarms & process points are not tracked. Once the critical configured alarm is detected, root cause analysis program is activated. The alarm analysis decision tree is traversed and possible cause of the alarm is identified and same is displayed on the operator work station. Diagram of EAMS in Figure1. Decision support on the corrective actions for process operation and maintenance: System has four Modules • Logic Tree Module • This comprises of various fault tree logics to help analysing root cause. These trees are scanned/executed continuously.
• Reporting Engine Responsible for annunciating the cause Alarm diagnostic functions follow above steps for Root Cause analysis in case of process abnormality. EAMS are implemented in 2 options: • Standalone EAMS –All process points & alarms are fetched through OPC and are configured in application package as standalone system since few DCS vendors do not have standard package for above functions. Figure 2. • EAMS Integral system – All process data and application software reside in DCS systems. Few DCS vendors have developed these functions in DCS. Figure 3. Alarm decision trees shall be available in Operator work station.1 Special features: Critical alarms apart from displaying on OWS in CCR are sent as an SMS to identified plant personnel mobiles. So personnel shall know the major events, Justification & Conclusion Alarm management shall be viewed as investment for risk management. The effectiveness of Automation is governed and improved by Expert effective alarm management system. This system shall play a pivotal role in operation’s decision making and requires information empowerment. The system shall transform the role of operator from doing tedious & repetitive to well guided task. Chemical Engineering World

Seamless integration of database with plant control system adds value to the system without any additional external interface. Future trend & demand may push all DCS Vendors to implement as standard modules Effective alarm management system is crucial for efficient plant operation. “Alarm management system” design with flexibility to incorporate plant best practices for continuous improvisation. As the right action is likely to be taken more quickly, this alarm management system often leads to bottom line benefits such as less equipment damage and improvements in process up time, & quality. Nuisance-free intelligent alarms provide the operator with the time window to implement a corrective action prior to escalation. With implementation of these packages in all the future projects by all Utilities, we can presume that benefits are seen by the Operation & Maintenance personal for providing guidance to them for attending to problems and avoiding spurious trips, prevention of loss of life and property, environment protection, etc. However, this Expert Alarm management system is in the infant stage of implementation of complete required alarms with a Faults decision trees. All the stake holders’, consultant , clients, OEM’s and DCS vendors have to develop these data base of fault decision trees for all alarm to cover all process plants
and take this initiative & concept forward . The cost involved is less, but long term benefits are more. All DCS suppliers provide an effective foundation for implementation of alarm management system confirming to ISA 18.2. The latest advances in dynamic alarm conditioning methods, like eclipsing logics, out of service conditions, alarm shelving, alarm prioritization, alarm grouping etc can be implemented in present DCS . These alarm practices are developed under a common management framework; these remove bad actor alarms, rationalisation of alarms, alarm sorting, etc. Hence alarm flooding is avoided and plant safety & reliability is improved. However, the intelligent root cause analysis functions are not covered as a present alarm module and ISA 18.2 alarm model. Drive towards Excellency in operations shall promote the need for effective alarm management .Plant users are operating close to limits and always look for ways to increase the operation efficiency by reducing the down time, increasing productivity and implementing real time performance management strategies These are gaining importance due to the growing void in experienced operators and increased level of complexity and sophistication in control system.

Design of Experiments Improves Peptide Bond Yield from 20 to 76 Per cent Living matter is primarily made of proteins, so understanding how nonliving matter can form proteins is critical to understanding how life emerged. The peptide bond, which is formed when the carboxyl group of one molecule reacts with the amino group of another molecule, releasing water, is the basic building block of proteins. In all of today’s living cells, the ribosome, a large and complex molecular machine, serves as the site of biological protein synthesis. But, as life was emerging peptides had to be synthesized in a much simpler way. Researchers demonstrated decades ago that amino acids can be formed naturally in conditions believed to have existed on earth when life was emerging and they have long tried to gain a better understanding of what conditions might be conducive to the formation of simple peptides. Peptide bond formation also has many important applications in pharmaceutical research and manufacturing since certain peptides have been shown to be effective in treating cancer, diabetes, infections and other diseases. Studying peptide bond formation Researchers Professor Palwinder Singh, organic chemist, and Dr Manpreet Bhatti, environmental engineer, at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, India, recently worked to fine-tune the conditions that best promote peptide bond formation in an uncatalyzed aqueous phase reaction1. In their first series of experiments, reaction of an equimolar solution of the amino acids (His) and proline (Pro) in solution in acetonitrile - water was studied as a function of temperature, pH, reaction time and concentration. The four factors of interest were varied one at a time while the yield was subjected to high resolution mass spectroscopy to quantify the peptide bond formation by measuring the amount of the peptides Pro-His dipeptide, diketopiperazine 2, diketopiperazine 3, and tripeptide 4. However, it was difficult to optimize the conditions for the best yield of the dipeptide because the formation of diketopiperazine impedes the quantification of the formation of other peptides. The researchers changed their approach to using aqueous solutions 32 • November 2017
of Carbobenzoxy derivatized valine (N-Cbz-Val) and Glycylglycine methyl ester hydrochloride (Gly(OMe)HCl which prevents the formation of diketopiperazine. Gly(OMe) was used in place of glycine for easy isolation of the dipeptide methyl ester from the aqueous solution. However, glycine worked equally well for peptide bond formation. The onefactor-at-a-time (OFAT) approach was again used to investigate the effects of temperature, pH, reaction concentration
and reaction time on yield. Over 75 runs, the reaction temperature ranged from 60oC to 120oC, the pH was varied from 3 to 10, the reaction time was between 30 and 300 minutes and the concentration ranged from 0.94 to 4.7M. Over 75 runs, the highest yield of peptides was 20 per cent. Interactions between factors “We felt that we should be able to obtain a better yield than this,” said Dr.

Manpreet Bhatti, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences at Guru Nanak Dev University. “I had a hunch that one or more interactions between variables might be playing a role that was obscured by the OFAT method. A major problem with studying one factor at a time is that you cannot detect interactions between factors. By varying an individual factor you can find the optimal value of each one with all the others held constant. However, when you combine the supposedly-optimized values of each factor the results are often far less than optimal because of the ways that they interact with each other.” “Design of experiments provides a better approach that varies the values of all factors in parallel so it uncovers not just the main effects of each factor but also the interactions between the factors,” Bhatti added. “This approach makes it possible to identify the optimal values for all factors in combination and also requires far fewer experimental runs than one factor at a time.” Bhatti used Design-Expert software from Stat-Ease, Inc. to develop a highly-fractionated two34 • November 2017
level factorial screening experiment that evaluated 4 variables at a time, called a resolution IV design. The experiment required 10 runs to explore the design space, including investigating evaluating the main effects of each factor as well as the two-factor interactions. Designing the experiment Bhatti used a Design-Expert template to create an experimental design that requires the minimum runs needed for screening at this level of resolution. “We selected Design-Expert software because it is relatively easy to use compared to other statistical software. Design-Expert walks the user through the process of creating a designed experiment. The user simply enters the factors and selects the type of design that fits his or her needs. The software provides feedback on the design, such as the number of runs required and the effects resolution. This makes it easy to quickly evaluate the pros and cons of different designs.” As shown in Figure 1, the factors in the experiment were reaction temperature
(90 to 120 oC), pH (5 to 7) reaction time (180 to 360 minutes) and concentration of reactants (2.5 M to 5.0M)). A maximum yield of 74 per cent of NCbz-Val-Gly(OMe) was obtained with a reaction temperature of 120 oC, a pH of 5, a reaction time of 360 min and a reactant concentration of 2.5 M. Figure 2 shows the data analyzed by Pareto chart which indicates a strong interaction of pH and temperature that had been masked in the one-factor-ata-time experiment. The two-dimensional contour plot shown in Figure 3 further shows that the effect of temperature depends dramatically on the pH which is the key to optimizing the reaction. The results also showed a single peak in the chromatogram indicating a lack of racemization under the optimized reaction conditions. Racemization refers to the conversion of an enantiomerically pure compound (one where only one enantiomer is present) into a mixture of the enantiomers. A lack of racemization is valuable in pharmaceutical manufacturing applications because it eliminates the need for a subsequent operation to separate the enantiomers. Chemical Engineering World

Building up the peptide chain The optimized reaction conditions were used to produce a number of N-Cbzdipeptides and also for a build-up of the peptide chain. The treatment of N-Cbz-ValGly(OMe) with NaOH in acetone–water, followed by the reaction of the resulting N-Cbz-Val-Gly(OH) with L-leucine(OMe)HCl resulted in the formation of N-CbzVal-Gly-Leu(OMe). Ester hydrolysis and the reaction of N-Cbz-Val-Gly-Leu(OH) with L-Ala(OMe)-HCl at 120oC and pH 5 resulted in N-Cbz-Val-Gly-Leu-Ala(OMe). Although the peptide was elongated in a stepwise fashion, the sequence of amino acids in N-Cbz-Val-Gly-Leu-Ala(OMe) was verified with the help of the fragmentation pattern in the mass spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. For comparison of the optical rotation, N-CbzVal-Gly-Leu-Ala(OMe) was also prepared 36 • November 2017
through a conventional method. These results were used to develop a synthetic protocol for production of peptides. The practicability of the method was also verified by synthesizing a pentapeptide. Starting with N-Cbz-Gly, the stepwise addition of Pro, Val, Ala and Ile resulted in the formation of a pentapeptide with a 55 per cent overall yield. In conclusion, DOE was used to demonstrate that temperature and pH function synergistically in the process of peptide bond formation. The optimized reaction was used to achieve sequencespecific and nonracemized synthesis of a tetrapeptide and pentapeptide at high yields. This is believed to be the first published report of constructing sequencespecific peptides in a noncatalyzed reaction. Besides demonstrating a possible pathway for the creation of
proteins from nonliving matter, It may also prove to be an economical method for commercial peptide synthesis..

Waste Control in Downstream Industry Industrial growth & rapid urbanization resulted in increase in waste generation. India faces major environmental challenges associated with waste generation and inadequate waste collection, transport, treatment and disposal. Current systems in India cannot cope with the volumes of waste generated by an increasing urban population, industrial growth, and these impacts on the environment and public health. The challenges and barriers are significant, but so are the opportunities.

or environment, either alone or when in contact with other wastes. Various agencies have defined hazardous wastes in different ways and as such, there is no uniformly accepted international definition so far. It is presumed that about 10 to 15 per cent of wastes produced by industries are hazardous and the generation of hazardous wastes is increasing at the rate of 2 to 5 per cent per year. Hazardous industrial wastes in India can be categorized as : • Hazardous wastes generated from various industries. • Hazardous industrial wastes imported into India from Western Countries for reprocessing and recycling.
Use of Hazardous Wastes as Alternate Fuels In India, about 4.43 million tons of hazardous wastes are generated annually, out of which 71,833 tons are incinerable (as per the reports of SPCBs submitted to the Supreme Court of India). There is a need to explore the possibility of using such wastes by other industries. Incineration Incineration serves the dual purpose of reduction of both the toxicity and the volume of the waste, which is an important consideration when the disposal of wastes is finally destined for landfills. Most of the process wastes from chemical unit operations can very well be treated in properly designed incinerators.

Innovative STEM Program Invests in Homegrown Talent Encouraging students to pursue a career in engineering and technical fields
This article explains how Allied introduced the nationwide, non-profit program known as Project Lead the Way (PLTW) into their own small northeastern Ohio country. Through introducing students to a wide variety of engineering skills—whether it is CAD, wiring circuits, soldering, or writing G-Code—PLTW managed to become a renowned model for encouraging homegrown talent to pursue a career in the STEM fields. In addition to changing the lives of so many young students within the county, PLTW is also dedicated to increasing the quality and quantity of science and technology graduates in the United States.
A
bout a decade ago, I got involved in what I think is a unique way to create an impassioned and skilled local engineering and technical workforce. The Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program we established in our small county in northeast Ohio has become a renowned model for encouraging homegrown talent to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields. Read on to see how we are making it work and to hear from one young participant who says it changed his life. Searching for a way to encourage local students to become engineers It all started after being rejected by a candidate for an excellent engineering job who was unwilling to relocate to Dover, Ohio. Our manufacturing factory is in Tuscarawas County, on the edge of Appalachia in northeast Ohio. It is a beautiful area but not a destination
very few high school students were even pursuing engineering degrees. Clearly, we were failing to communicate that an engineering degree can offer a rewarding career with a great standard of living. I knew that in order for our local businesses to grow, we had to change the way we trained for the game. I knew we had students that grew up in the area and loved it here. They may have wanted to return home after college graduation, but felt their opportunities would be limited in a small town. We needed a way to develop engineers and technicians with the complete spectrum of skills, including good work ethic, integrity and the aptitude for continuous learning. From an engineering standpoint, we were looking
for employees with either an associate or bachelor’s degree. For technicians, we needed people who would be able to repair equipment, or perform hands-on applications on the shop floor as well as in the marketplace. As a serious Cleveland Indians fan, I came to believe that our quest was similar to the one that Dick Jacobs faced in the mid-1980s. After purchasing the Indians, he invested heavily in a farm team to develop homegrown talent that could compete in the big league and the investment worked. By the 1990s his team had won division championships, and was competing in playoffs and the World Series. (No more wise-cracks by David Letterman about the team’s
location for a career, or the typical go-to place for a young college graduate looking for a big city, the South, or a beach. We have always worked with local vocational schools and tried to hire local precision machining students. We also had some success working with community and technical colleges, but were not able to entice students to come back after they left to get 4-year engineering degrees. Also, we found that 42 • November 2017

CEW Features science strands. Table 1 shows the courses in the pre-engineering track which is an example of a rigorous program guaranteed to start building the homegrown talent we were scouting for. The program is strength training for young minds but the benefits of developing the game-plan expand beyond the classroom’s playing field. Numerous teachers trained to instruct PLTW shared that the experience has changed their teaching careers. One said she felt herself getting a bit stale, like she was just going through the motions. Teaching this curriculum and watching young minds explode as they learned to problem solve and build things had truly energized her.
County school districts and told them about the program goals. We explained if they could commit to implementing PLTW in their district, the business members would find the funds to run the program. Six out of nine districts agreed and we were on our way to establishing our own locally run program. The Tuscarawas County program partnered with Ohio PLTW, who know the academic side and speak the education language. The beauty of the arrangement is that it is truly plug and play. The group leaned heavily on the educator group to walk the business community through the process and explain how to integrate the program into the school system. The superintendents focused on building understanding amongst the teachers and finding teachers who would be interested in being trained to teach the courses. I brought my passion and belief in our local talent to the game and was excited to become the chief fundraiser. Along with Allied, local business partners, 46 • November 2017
foundations, and grants contributed more than USD 700,000 to launch the program. The money raised was dedicated to purchasing equipment and technology needed to run the program such as robotics equipment and computers to run CAD programs. In nine years, the program has raised well over USD 1.5 million – pretty impressive for a small Ohio county with less than a hundred thousand people. The Tuscarawas County PLTW program is involved at all grade levels. The elementary curriculum introduces the fundamentals of STEM to K-5 classes. Middle school students follow the Gateway to Technology (GTT) Making Math and Science Matter program. GTT offers ten modules for use in an existing science class or as standalone enrichment classes. Examples include design and modeling, automation and robotics, the magic of electrons, and medical detectives. At the high school level, students can choose from preengineering, biomedical, and computer
As part of the PLTW program, hundreds of students have participated in field trips to the Allied manufacturing facilities. Tours are designed to show students that a modern manufacturing facility is not the dark, loud and grungy place in which their grandparents may have worked. Highlighting automation, robots, and computer controlled machines, plant tours show everything from raw material to finished products. They begin by walking through the engineering office to see products being created on a computer and they end the tour by seeing the finished product. Tours for high school aged students include specific stations that cover phases of the process in greater detail, including engineering design and lean manufacturing principles. In this tour, the desktop “factory,” makes widgets ineffectively and students are asked to reorganize activities in order to improve productivity The tours help students develop their own view of manufacturing in the 21 st century – with lights, robots, and technology bustling around in a bright, air-conditioned facility. CEW Features to teach students that engineers don’t just drive trains. We are committed to immersing youth in the manufacturing experience so they can witness STEM in action through these tours. We are passionate about developing the talent needed to keep American manufacturing on the forefront of the industry. Showing it off to the community One unique feature of the Tuscarawas County PLTW program is an annual showcase where students present their STEM projects to the community. Often donors to community endeavors do not get to see the end results of their generosity and that is why I ask schools participating in PLTW to invite the community to this showcase each spring. Over the years, the event has grown into a major affair, which includes an open house before the presentations. Held at the Kent State University Tuscarawas Campus, the event is literally packed with parents and grandparents as well as business and community members. Visitors review the displays and ask students to explain their work. Last year more than 150 students presented their own STEM projects at the annual PLTW showcase. The showcase has become a real proving ground for creativity. For example, one student was standing in front of the room showing their design for a coin sorter. The team printed the coin sorters on a 3D printer and said, “After the presentation, we’ll be in the back of the room selling them for USD 5 apiece.” Now that’s free enterprise – connecting engineering design ideas to retail sales. I paid the USD 5 and I remember those kids every time I reach in for a coin. A few years ago, the showcase format was expanded to introduce a little friendly competition. Each grade level competes among others in their grade. Engineers view the presentations and pick the best team. The trophies, which are easily 5 feet 48 • November 2017
tall, can be brought back for display to the winning school for the year. They have become a huge source of school pride. The program leads to real jobs The Ohio PLTW program has had major successes in recruiting and hiring of participants. One well-known success story is a partnership with Honda North America in Marysville, which allows Columbus State students to study two days a week and spend the other three working at Honda. Many who complete the two-semester program and earn their associate degree are hired fulltime. PLTW students from Centerville and Kettering-Fairmont high schools have received intern assignments at Motoman/Yaskawa while continuing their education in a format similar to the Honda model. Other local programs include a job connection website called Home Town Opportunity, which focuses on connecting local companies with local talent, and the AMBE Alliance (Auglaize Mercer Business Education Alliance) which began with seed funding from PLTW. Allied Machine & Engineering does its part in hiring homegrown talent into our building as well. Each summer we bring in more than 30 student interns to introduce them to the high skilled jobs available in today’s manufacturing sector. The interns are given the opportunity to earn money while getting entry-level experience. Those with the right skills are given a job offer prior to their senior year.
Logan graduated from Miami University in May 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He interned at Allied in the summer of 2016 and just started working at Allied full time. Logan is serving as an R&D design engineer, working with a team of six engineers brainstorming on improvements for existing tools and creating new products. He creates 3D models and performs Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate how the new tools compare to other ideas and existing products. He explains, “PLTW introduces students to a wide variety of engineering skills, whether it is CAD, wiring circuits, soldering, writing G-Code, or just solving engineering problems on paper. Because of this, I was able to go into college with an advantage over my peers.” He notes that most of his friends never had the chance to take any engineering classes before starting college, and he already had four years and an array of engineering skills. “Throughout my college career, I’d find times where I was the only one in my group capable of performing a task. I had a lot more knowledge of CAD and technical drawings than my peers, which always made me the designer for our projects. I was also a step ahead when I was involved in a project dealing with electrical engineering.” I am proud to say that no other county in Ohio has been as successful at partnering with schools and the business community. This approach to grooming homegrown talent is batting a thousand.
Homegrown talent at work One great example of PLTW’s success is Logan Lamonica, who graduated from Dover High School in 2013 after taking PLTW classes throughout his high school career. Logan credits the PLTW program with introducing him to all areas of engineering, so he could eventually pursue the one for which he had the most passion.

ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE (ZLD)
N
owadays, ZLD is the requirement of Pollution Control Board. Here the main objective is to nullify the effluent outflow from any industry. In ZLD concept an industry has to Recover and Reuse all the effluent water generated in their process after proper Treatment & Purification. There should not be any resultant liquid effluent discharge from the industry. For that purpose, the effluent water generated by a process industry has to be treated in an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and the pure water will be recovered using Reverse osmosis (RO) plant followed by Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE) for RO Reject Management and reused.
solid salts thus recovered are filtered using a centrifuge and the final filtrate solution so called mother liquor is dried up in a ATFD. In Textile industries the recovered salt shall be reused. We have manufactured and commissioned more than one hundred plants for this application which are of different capacities.
In order to achieve Zero discharge norms of Pollution Control Board, the only choice is to go for the Multiple Effect Evaporators after the RO plants (RO Reject Management). The rejects from RO plant is concentrated for their dissolved salts using a MEE plant and then the salts are precipitated in a Forced circulation or Adiabatic Chiller Crystallizers based on their solubility characteristics. The

Our product is a tailor made one to suit our Client needs. We design, fabricate, erect and commission the evaporators as per our client requirements and are highly energy efficient and reliable from the operational point of view. Mass Flow Controlled Coating of Medical Devices
T
he Medical market - including Health and Personal Care - is a very demanding market when it comes to the specification of instrumentation. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Research and development activities are mainly geared to the demands of the xxxxxxxxxx market and many new products result from close co-operation with our customers. As an example, in the field of Medical equipment, our low flow liquid flow meters / controllers are being applied for artificial kidney production (hollow fibres). At health care institutions (e.g. hospitals), our gas mass flow meters are used for monitoring anesthetic gas consumption.
Advances in the design of medical devices such as catheters, guide wires and stents have greatly improved the quality of medical care. However, these devices are often made with materials that bring undesirable complications, such as bacterial infection, blood clots, and tissue trauma caused by device insertion. It is common to apply specialist coatings to alleviate these difficulties. Coatings must be applied in a repeatable verifiable manner especially when the coating is an active drug product as for example in the case of a drug eluting stent. Traditional coating technology involves the spraying of liquids using various types of nozzles, in all these Chemical Engineering World
and is capable of controlling the flow of volatile fluids with low boiling points. The system is configurable to your individual needs and is available with a wide variety of pumps, communication and control options.
applications the control of flow is vital to the accuracy of the coating applied. By using traditional flow metering and pump control techniques flow-rates can be controlled to 5- 10% of the target rate. This may be acceptable in some applications, however where active drug substances are being applied a variation of 10% in drug coating leads to an unacceptable rate of failures & losses at the QC stage. Responding to the need to improve flow control technology in low flow coating applications. Cori-Tech have developed a unique mini CORI-FLOWTM controlled pumping system which uses the Coriolis principle to accurately measure true mass flow rate. Flow rates as low as 0.2 grams/ hour can be controlled to an accuracy of 0.5% of target The mini CORI-FLOWTM controller uses its integral fast PID control system to adjust the speed of a closed loop coupled pump resulting in a typical dosing accuracy of 0.5-1%. This represents a 10 fold improvement in what is achievable using a traditional volume flow metering system. The mini CORIFLOWTM measures mass flow directly and there is no need for the system to be calibrated for each liquid being pumped. It is not susceptible to errors caused by variations in density or temperature
Some applications where this technology can be of benefit include: • Cardiac, peripheral and arterial stent coatings. • Drug eluting balloon coatings. • Pacemaker coatings. • Coatings onto sutures and surgical instruments. • Orthopaedic implant coatings. • Bio-absorbable and biocompatible coatings. • Hydrophilic or hydrophobic coatings onto medical devices such as catheters. • Guide wire coatings. • Heparin and silicon coatings for blood collection tubes and syringes. • Silver Silane coating onto bandages. • Anti-microbial coatings onto medical textiles such as bandages, surgical gauze, gloves and masks. • Microencapsulation of pharmaceuticals. • Pharmaceutical spray drying. • Coatings for diagnostic test kits. • Protein, enzyme, and reagent coatings. • Supercritical CO 2 for creating drugloaded nanophase material.

The enthusiasm has led to admirable quality in our products which have been time and again appreciated by European &Indian customers alike. In the chain of manufacturing every stage operator is a “customer” when he gets a part. Every part goes to next the “customer” only when all aspects of inspection are completely met. We are proud to say that many defects which could have gone unnoticed were discovered by this team. They are what we call as the trained eyes. THE PRODUCT For the growth of any nation, power (from any source) fuel, agriculture, defence, basic infrastructure like highways, telecommunication etc are very essential. Without these no developmental activity can be effective. All the above industries need pipe related components. The “BELLOWS” plays a very vital role in all these industries; only the type of bellows varies with the application. Bellows is a sophisticated engineering hardware, which normally is not available “OFF THE SHELF”. It needs to be customized to the special requirements of customers. Chemical Engineering World

Multi-purpose Inspection Tool Probe Technologies Holdings, Inc offers the iQ, a new multi-purpose inspection tool that provides quantitative measurements of well casing thickness and inner diameter, as well as a comprehensive analysis of casing material properties. It operates in highpressure wellbores, including those in highly deviated and horizontal wells, up to 20,000 psi, in temperatures as high as 175oC. The primary advantage of the Probe iQ is that it provides precise casing measurements such as ID, thickness, and material properties, including magnetic permeability and electrical conductivity with quadrant circumferential sensitivity. The patented foursegment receiver incorporated within the tool mandrel measures casing thickness in 90° sections (quadrants) based on remotefield eddy current (RFEC) principles. The measured electromagnetic (EM) field attenuations and phase shifts from transmitter to receivers are quantitatively translated to single-layer casing thicknesses following corrections made based on EM property variations. In addition, the axial differential measurements, which are also measured in quadrants, deliver enhanced axial resolutions of small defects on the casing wall. Meanwhile, the precise casing ID, magnetic permeability and electrical conductivity are derived from multi-frequency measurement and inversion while the EM caliper sensor arrangement satisfies the near-field eddy current (NFEC) conditions. As a result, both internal - and external - casing wall defects can be identified by combining casing ID with quadrant thicknesses when interpreting the data. When used in conjunction with Probe’s MAC tools, the EM caliper can further determine the non-metallic deposition on the casing. The intelligent measurements algorithm significantly simplifies the calibration procedures, consistently delivering reliable results. To provide a relative tool orientation and monitor shock and vibration, iQ features a tri-axial accelerometer. In addition, an auxiliary temperature sensor in the electronics sub enables complementary monitoring of the tool’s overall operating condition. The iQ is the latest addition to Probe’s range of well integrity solutions, including the MAC Multi-Arm Caliper tools, RADii Segmented Bond Logging tools, and others. Available in 2-3/4-in and 3-1/2-in tool sizes, the iQ measures casing thickness and internal diameter, and casing material properties to identify defects in a wide range of casing sizes. CEW Project Update
New Contracts/Expansions/Revamps The following list is a brief insight into the latest new projects by various companies in India.
CHEMICALS Coal India is planning a `10,000-crore joint venture along with GAIL India, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF) and The Fertilizer Corporation of India (FCIL) to set up a urea and ammonium nitrate chemicals complex that will run on gasified coal. Coal India has appointed Projects and Development India (PDIL) to conduct a feasibility study on the project. The plan is to use around 6 million tonnes of coal from coalfields at Talcher in Odisha and manufacture about 3 lakh tonnes of urea annually and around 300-400 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per day. Ammonium nitrate is the principal ingredient for making explosives used as blasting material at coal mines. The country is facing a crunch in the supply of ammonium nitrate and explosive suppliers often jack up prices, resulting in higher input costs for the company. Songwon Industrial Co Ltd of South Korea has launched its new pilot plant in Panoli, Gujarat, thereby strengthening the organisation’s overall specialty chemicals development capability. Built on Songwon’s Indian site with all the necessary main unit operations, the new plant is equipped with the most up-to-date technologies and materials for producing a wide range of chemicals for a broad spectrum of applications - from one kilo up to several hundred kilo samples. To reinforce the organisation’s position in existing areas of business and enhance its ability to enter new areas, the new pilot plant will be supported by the Songwon’s strong local R&D team in Panoli, as well as its central technology innovation center located in Maeam, Korea. AkzoNobel and Atul Ltd have agreed to jointly set up a manufacturing plant for monochloroacetic acid (MCA) at Atul’s facility in Gujarat. Each partner will hold a 50 per cent stake in the venture. The partnership will build on Atul’s status as a leading global supplier of the herbicide 2,4D (which uses MCA as a key raw material), and AkzoNobel’s leading global position in MCA market, with plants in the Netherlands, China, Japan and the US. The investment is subject to regulatory approvals and signing of final agreements. The partnership will use chlorine and hydrogen manufactured by Atul to produce the monochloroacetic acid, taking advantage of both Atul’s existing infrastructure and the leading eco-friendly hydrogenation technology supplied by AkzoNobel. From an initial annual capacity of 32 kilo-tonnes (KT) at start-up, the plant has been designed for future expansion to 60 KT. The plant will produce enough MCA to meet the captive requirement of Atul; AkzoNobel will market the rest of it, primarily in India. Monochloroacetic acid is an essential building block in the chemical industry and is used in a wide variety of chemicals. Camlin Fine Sciences Ltd, which offers shelf-life solutions (anti-oxidants and intermediates), performance chemicals and aroma chemicals, has received environmental clearance from the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority of Gujarat for setting up a manufacturing facility for hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol and their down-stream products at Dahej SEZ. The Dahej plant will expand capacities and provide CFS with a base to manufacture hydroquinone and catechol in India. The plant will also help Camlin Fine Sciences to add capacity for manufacturing of vanillin, for which catechol is a key raw material. 84 • November 2017
The company expects to commission the Dahej plant in FY18. The plant will have capacity to produce 9,000 metric tonne per annum (MTPA) and 6,000 MTPA of HQ and catechol, respectively. SRF is planning to invest ` 3,500 crore over the next four years, 70 per cent of which would go into its fast-growing chemicals business, to cater to rising global demand. SRF, which exports 90 per cent of its chemicals and counts Syngenta, BASFBSE 0.08 per cent, BayerBSE -0.04 per cent CropScience and other global biggies as its clients, has over the years steered its focus away from technical textiles to chemicals, where it has witnessed a rapid revenue growth and fat operating margin. JSW Energy, part of the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group, is believed to be in the race for buying out the thermal power assets of Monnet Power and Jindal India Thermal Power Ltd (JITPL) in Odisha. Monnet Power’s 1,050-MW coal-based power plant near Angul was in advanced stage of commissioning. Monnet Power’s parent company, Monnet Ispat & Energy had won the Mandakini coal block in Odisha in competitive bidding, it surrendered the block later on grounds of economic unviability. Monnet Power had accumulated debt in excess of `5,000 crore. Though Chemical Engineering World
lenders had earlier denied a haircut in JSW Energy’s prospective deal to acquire majority equity in Monnet Power, the Sajjan Jindal-owned firm is still believed to be in the hunt for the asset. Besides Monnet Power, JSW Energy is also eyeing takeover of BC Jindal controlled JITPL’s 1,200-MW coal-based plant at Derang near Angul. The first unit (600-MW) of the 1,200-MW plant had begun commercial operations and started power supplies to the Odisha grid. But, coal paucity and absence of firm linkages had caused disruptions in the operations of the power plant. This project has been completed at a cost of `7537 crore which includes a debt component of `5,900 crore. JITPL has power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Odisha’s Gridco Ltd, Kerala State Electricity Board and Tata Power Trading Corporation. Apart from JSW Energy, JITPL also had competing offers from Adani Power and Singapore’s SembCorp.. NLC India (formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation) which is in the hunt for buying out power assets is understood to have shown interest in the 700-MW Odisha plant of Hyderabad-based Ind-Barath Power Infra Ltd (IBPIL). The power plant located at Sahajbahal, near Jharsuguda, has commenced commercial operations. Though the exact size of the potential deal is not known, the valuation could be anywhere in the range of ` 5000-5,500 crore. In August last year, NLC India had floated an Expression of Interest (EoI) from companies owning coal and lignite-based power projects, for a possible acquisition. NLC India’s installed thermal power capacity is 3, 240-MW. It runs a 10-MW solar power unit and wind power assets with a capacity totalling 37.5-MW. Western Coalfields, state-run Coal India arm, has received the environment clearance for its `263 crore expansion project in Nagpur district, Maharashtra. The proposal is to enhance the production capacity of the Gokul open cast mine to 1.875-million tonnes per annum (MTPA) from the existing 1-MTPA. The mine, located in 767.17-hectare, has a mineable reserve of 14.50-million tonnes. Among the conditions specified, the company has been asked to get ‘Consent to Operate’ Certificate from the State Pollution Control Board for the existing production capacity of 1-MTPA and also the ‘Consent to Establish’ for the proposed capacity of 1.875-MTPA prior to enhancing the production capacity. With regard to transportation of coal, the company has been asked to carry out by covered trucks and take mitigative measures to control dust and other fugitive emissions all along the roads by providing sufficient number of water sprinklers. The company has been informed to adopt controlled blasting techniques to control ground vibration and flying rocks. It has also been told to implement a progressive afforestation plan covering an area of 376.04-hectare at the end of mining. Of the total quarry area of 231.73-hectare (on floor) and 291.21-hectare (on surface), the backfilled quarry area of 115.39-hectare should be reclaimed with plantation and there will be no void left at the end of the mining operations. The land after mining should be restored for agriculture purpose.
