At MUNSCH all processes, material provisioning, manufacturing, assembly and service routines are being arranged to be flexible on request. MUNSCH is able to provide tailor-made hydraulics, specific documentation and testing, and include any kind of accessory equipment with our supply - always on time with the delivery schedule. Staff Qualification and Availability - Being in touch with our clients is where MUNSCH makes a difference. To provide qualified and individual advice, sales and service teams are requested to continue their education and maintain an active network across the pump industry. A reasonable part of MUNSCH’s yearly budget is being spent on training and networking activities. Coating - Aggressive industrial atmosphere requires high quality coating for the equipment. At MUNSCH all pumps and equipment are being coated with a polyurethane powder coating that is literally glued to the metal surface, providing excellent protection against mechanical and chemical impact. MUNSCH powder coatings are superior to wet paint and in line with the International Standard EN 12944-2 up to Class C5-M. MUNSCH is a privately-owned German company, specialized in manufacturing of non-metallic centrifugal pumps with a major focus on customer needs, high quality and efficiency. Their pumps are to be found in chemical industries where safety is a major issue and in all kind of industrial applications where availability, fast response and qualified support are required.

BASF to Partner with Adani to evaluate investment in acrylics value chain in Mundra, India
Mr. Narayan Krishnamohan to succeed Dr Raman Ramachandran in BASF The Board of Directors of BASF India Limited today approved the appointment of Mr. Narayan Krishnamohan as Managing Director of BASF India Limited, effective April 1, 2019. He will also l e a d B A S F ’s bu s i n e s s i n South Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. He succeeds Dr. Raman Ramachandran, who will retire on March 31, 2019.
BASF SE, headquartered in Ludwigshafen, Germany (“BASF”) and Adani Group (“Adani”) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the eve of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2019, to evaluate a major joint investment in the acrylics value chain. This would be BASF’s largest investment in India to date. The designated site would be located at Mundra port in Gujarat, India. A feasibility study will be completed by the end of 2019. According to the MoU, BASF and Adani want to establish a joint venture with an investment totaling about € 2 billion (approximately ` 16,000 crore), in which BASF will hold the majority. The potential investment comprises the development, construction and operation of production plants including propane dehydrogenation (PDH), oxo C4 complex (butanols and 2-ethylhexanol), glacial acrylic acid (GAA), butyl acrylate (BA) and potentially other downstream products. The products are predominantly for the Indian market to serve a wide range of local industries, including construction, automotive and coatings, whose growing demand is currently supplied via imports, thus supporting the “Make in India” initiative. On this occasion, Mr. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, said, “India continues to be a very large importer of petrochemicals given the rapid expansion of the middle class, and this leads to a significant outflow of precious foreign exchange. Our partnership with BASF is a big step forward in enabling our country’s ‘Make in India’ program, as this partnership will allow us to produce in Mundra several of the chemicals along the C3 chemical value chain that we are currently importing. Mundra's infrastructure is ideally suited to enable chemicals production, and our ability to deliver renewable power makes this a unique partnership on several fronts.” “BASF’s intention to invest in a major new site for the acrylics value chain in India clearly demonstrates our strong and long-term commitment to our Indian customers. Together with the Adani Group, we would have the opportunity to provide our customers with highquality chemicals and support them in growing their business. With our production powered by renewable energy, we would be able to minimize our impact on the environment,” said Dr. Martin Brudermüller, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF SE. 18 • January 2019
Mr. Narayan Krishnamohan has been with BASF for more than 24 years, having started his journey in BASF India Ltd., and subsequently handled various regional and global leadership responsibilities in Singapore, Germany and Hong Kong. His leadership experience spans multiple divisions in BASF, including Leather Chemicals, Specialty Chemicals, Acrylics & Dispersions, Paper Chemicals, Human Nutrition and Intermediates, among others. As Head South Asia and Managing Director, BASF India Limited, he will be based in Mumbai and will focus on expanding the business and supporting BASF’s customers and partners in the region.
Nouryon opens new India HQ and research center to support growth Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals) has opened a new headquarters office and research center to support its operations in India. Located in Mumbai, the new location brings together research and sales as well as business support functions, and enables the company to better meet customer needs across the region. Nouryon is significantly expanding its operations in India. Key projects include an expansion and upgrade of Nouryon’s organic peroxides facility in Mahad, which is close to completion, as well as a new monochloroacetic acid plant in Gujarat. The latter is a joint project with chemicals manufacturing company Atul, a part of Lalbhai Group, and is scheduled to start production later this year. “India is an increasingly impor tant market for us and these investments clearly demonstrate our commitment to grow with our customers in the region,” said Charlie Shaver, CEO of Nouryon. “The chemical industry is regarded as a backbone of India’s agricultural and industrial development, and we see good opportunities for sustainable growth.” The company started operations in India in 1991 and currently serves customers in markets ranging from agriculture to pharmaceuticals, and plastics, rubbers and composites as well as from personal care to paints and coatings, and oil and gas. No pump worries down under after leakage is reduced to ZERO
3-week payback for mineral sands mine, South Australia A large pump was pumping a mineral sand slurry and leaking excessive packing gland water, creating excessive mud on site. This pump required 9 gallons per minute (gpm) of gland water on the packing for proper operation. The packing was replaced with a double mechanical seal and tank system, reducing the leakage to zero. The improvement in the physical condition of the pump area is obvious from the ‘AFTER’ photo right, as the double seal resulted in zero leakage to the environment. In addition, the mine operator found that, with the elimination of the packing gland water going into the product, he could actually pump more product and less water. The entire seal upgrade paid for itself in only 3 weeks and a total of 24 pumps have been upgraded to double seals on this site.

Product applications include solid/liquid, solid/ gas, liquid/gas, liquid/liquid and solid/ solid separations for the oil and gas, power generation, chemical/petrochemical manufacturing, environmental, aviation and metal mining industries. The group also has a separate division that is involved in design, manufacture, supply and service of bio-processing equipment like bio-reactors and fermenters for bio-tech, pharmaceutical and food industry applications. This new division, started in 2017, is part of company’s efforts to diversify offerings into other market segments. Additionally, Sungov is currently commissioning a test skid built in accordance with MEPC 107 (49) to test and type approve its oily water separators (OWS) for bilge applications in the marine industry. The company sees it as a great opportunity to manufacture and OWS in India since most of the OWS installed onboard ships in India are imported from various manufacturers abroad Product Portfolio Current product offerings include automatic backwash filters, cartridge filters, coalescer filter separators, fluid conditioning systems, centrifugal separators, pipeline strainers,

Three Decades of Excellence in Industrial Filtration & Separation quick open closures and bio-reactors. The company has strong focus on domestic as well as export markets. In all, the products offered by Sungov have been installed in over 35 countries across the world. The Company is looking at food processing, chemical processing, bio-tech and pharmaceutical industries as potential growth sectors. Changing Market Dynamics In 1986, when the company started out, the number of players in the Indian filtration and separation industry were in a single digit. Today, there are over a hundred players. This is the single biggest change in market. The demand on the other hand has not increased ten-fold leaving most manufacturers to fight for a smaller pie of the market. Nevertheless, Sungov has managed to sustain growth by continually chasing niche market segments, case in point, the oily water separator for the marine industry. Sungov has always targeted products with high engineering content, products requiring import substitution to drive its research and development. These strategies along with focus on penetrating new geographies are the key drivers for growth. Volatility in oil prices: Biggest Challenge: While Sungov is taking incremental efforts to diversify risk into other market segments, the company is still dependent on oil and gas, petrochemical and power industries for major revenues. Lower oil prices reduce the pace of project funding. The revenues rely largely on abundance of
projects funding and execution. The biggest opportunity is still India. Irrespective of the state of the world economy, the company has seen positive movement in various Indian industry segments. Now the group is hopeful of leveraging growth in the core industries as well as new industries. Sungov is aiming strives to consistently achieve a year-on-year growth of 35 per cent in sales revenue for the next five years by growing specific products/technologies/ industries. Currently, most of the revenues is generated from one product line covering the oil and gas and petrochemical industries. The company is putting strategies in place to specifically grow the automatic backwash filters, cartridge filters, coalescer filter separators, centrifugal separators, bio-reactors and the under-development oily water separators product lines for the OEM, environmental, marine, bio-tech and pharmaceutical industries. In five years’ time, this approach will ensure that the risk is diversified and provide cushion from specific industry challenges.

Metal bellows is such a product, that this becomes the heart of their equipment. Hence, the bonding is very strong and finds mutual respect. D A Krishna, Managing Director, Bhastrik Mechanical Labs Pvt Ltd informs, “Bhastrik derives its name from the Pranayama called Bhastrika Pranayama which our ancient yoga describes it as akin to our lungs which expands and contracts like the bellows.” Mechanical Labs signifies that all efforts are made to ensure, just as in a lab that the product more than meets the customer’s satisfaction. It is proven true by company’s “O” Defect “O” follow-up with all national and international customers who have been with the company for over a decade. The company has a very strong customer centric approach that has enabled the company to develop long
Sophisticated Engineering with Exotic Metals term partnerships with their customers. The demand of valves and instruments has grown significantly and has shown exponential growth across automobile, electrical and nuclear sectors. “Since the entry into the bellows market, the company has become single source to the giant MNC’s like GE, Siemens to name a few as well as exporting to many international markets like Brazil, USA, China and many other countries,” Krishna says. He further adds that the company has maintained an impressive track record with several repeat orders with additional demand of new products from the customers. Over the last decade the company has grown at an average of 22 per cent. He attributes the growth of company to strong commitment to quality, providing customised solutions based on customer requirements, educating & training the customers on new products and providing after-sales support. Krishna expresses that the attitude of Government towards MSMEs needs to
change. He strongly feels that though Make in India has been talked a lot, authorities need to take adequate steps to support the growth of MSMEs which in turn will provide much needed thrust to the growth and employment generation in the true sense for India to leap-frog into the growth. He expects 10-15 per cent of growth from the private sector in the near future and as the Government is now slowly opening the defense sector to the private players, he guesstimates 15 per cent of growth potential. Typically, the programs of Defense and Space services are highly sensitive and demand very niche products with the highest quality standards. Bhastrik Mechanical Labs Pvt Ltd is in the advanced stage of accomplishing nation-building products which will put them in a unique position to serve these sectors. Over the next 5 years the group is likely to see 20 per cent growth from these two sectors.

Mr. Kevin James Managing Director Goodwin Pumps India Pvt Ltd
Tell us in detail about Goodwin Pumps growth in the last couple of years. In the year 1978 Goodwin was approached by British Coal to develop and manufacture an electrically driven submersible slurry pump which was robust and reliable enough to withstand the rigours of their environment. British Coal also wanted us to develop an alternative to vertical pumps giving installation flexibility. Extend the application base for the use of submersibles into dense media. Goodwin developed a motor enclosure which would prevent the electric motor overheating and burning out. Developed a design of an integral agitator to break-down and resuspend settled solids. Also developed and positioned a mechanical seal which was not subjected to pumped media pressure and a cable gland entry system which prevented the cable being pulled out of the gland and had a terminal enclosure quite separate from the motor enclosure. Goodwin's first submersible pump units were installed for British Coal in 1981 in South Wales. Goodwin expanded the installations into British Steel and from 1983 onwards went on to have thousands of slurry applications in the UK. Following the privatization of British Coal in 1994 and subsequent closures of deep mines and steel works in the UK, Goodwin decided to develop other European and global markets. 60 • January 2019
“Goodwin Pumps India ensures all the customer ’s needs are being addressed, serviced efficiently and comprehensively” In 1996 Goodwin established a presence on the African continent successfully installing submersible slurry pumps in applications for the gold, copper and platinum group metals mining industries. In 2005 Goodwin PLC, knowing that there was a global market for these state-ofthe-art submersible slurry pumps, decided to expand this product globally. Goodwin India was incorporated in 2005 to start manufacturing and selling the Goodwin submersible slurry pump that has been/ being sold in the UK since 1981.
These state-of-the-art submersible pumps are capable of pumping slurries containing abrasive solids up to 65 per cent by weight are successful in trouble-shooting applications in a wide range of industries like power, steel and mining. The heavy duty pumps are equipped with a patented external agitator that breaks down
Following the success of selling the Goodwin submersible slurry pumps in India, Goodwin PLC set up sales, manufacturing and servicing outlets for the pump in China and Brazil in 2008, Australia in 2014 and South Africa in 2016, expanding the pump operation to make it a truly global product. We now supply pumps and have a permanent presence in Europe, China, India, South America, Africa and Australia allowing us to give the full level of technical assistance and support that go with this product to our customers. What are the service offerings of the company and which sectors does it majorly cater to? Which are the potential growth sectors? Control of Temperature Processes With mapp Temperature, B&R offers temperature control that combines max useability and powerful control algorithms. Integrated simulation capabilities allow virtual commissioning in minutes. mapp Temperature also provides heating current monitoring. With mapp Temperature, it is possible to define zones and groups for temperature control. A zone is a unit consisting of an actuator, a temperature process and a sensor for measuring the temperature. Multiple zones can be combined into a physical group and controlled and optimized together. This gives the user max flexibility and scalability to meet any temperature control requirement. If applications cover a wide temperature range, simple tuning is often not sufficient to optimally adjust the parameters. mapp Temperature therefore includes a multi-stage auto-tuning process. The user can define several operating points and optimize them individually. The integrated simulation capability enables simple virtual commissioning without any hardware. This option makes it possible to test the application’s logic, error handling and HMI system in advance to significantly accelerate on-site commissioning. B&R’s temperature control system also offers heating current monitoring to enable early detection of faults through predictive maintenance. By monitoring the current of the heating elements, it is possible to react to a fault at an early stage without stopping the entire process. This ensures a high level of operational reliability and helps prevent extended downtime. Sheet Metal Structured Packing EVERPACK SM Column Packing is the sheet metal version of the popular EVERPACKWM (wire mesh) and HYFLUX (knitted wire mesh) packing. Their development is a part of EVERGREEN’s continuous and comprehensive development program to improve column packing performance. EVERPACK SM is supplied in modules, which consists of parallel layers of uniquely designed embossed sheet metal strips which are corrugated and arranged vertically. These modules are then stacked with an alternating 90 degree orientation of every other layer which gives a good lateral distribution of liquid. The embossed metal strips help to draw the liquid in all directions into a thin film and provides a marked improvement in uniform wetting of the packing bed. With the improved internal liquid distribution, high volumetric mass transfer efficiency is achieved and low pressure drop is maintained. Also because liquid is evenly distributed through the packing as a thin film, the total liquid hold-up in the packing is substantially reduced. The standard packing version has specific surface area of 250 m2/m3 (EVERPACK SMY 250). However, other variants with specific surface areas of 125 m2/m3 (SMY 125), 175 m2/m3 (SMY 175), 350 m2/m3 (SMY 350), 500 m2/m3 (SMY 500), 750 m2/m3 (SMY 750) and X crimp (60 degree crimp alignment) are also. Evergreen Technologies Pvt Ltd also manufacture high efficiency column internals (distributors, collectors, support grids, etc). Good initial distribution together with systematic redistribution is critical to optimum tower performance. It finds application in vacuum distillation where relatively low pressure drop is critical to maintaining low bottom temperatures to reduce products degradation; atmospheric operations where a large number of theoretical stages are required and/or where there are restrictions to overall column height; debottlenecking/energy reduction programs with the advantages of a high efficiency packing used to reduce reflux requirements and increase throughputs; and increase product purity which is possible due to availability of more equilibrium stages from same size column. Glass-lined Steel Tanks GLS tanks are glass-lined steel tanks, also known as glass-fused-to-steel-tanks. The reason of fusing glass with steel is to enhance the properties of latter. Single steel is vulnerable to environmental conditions, hence the fusing is required. After fusing the steel with glass, the strength increases, the acceptable bracket of pH value for alkaline solutions widens and the resistance of abrasion inflates. The tank panels are lined inside and outside with the glass enamel. The enamel is a solid, smooth and shiny cover of silicate. It is fused in a special furnace having a temperature range from 780 to 900 oC. The steel rounded (cylinder) shell of the tank is built from two layer glass fused sheet coated on both the sides. The sheets are attached with special high grade bolts and sealed by constantly flexible sealants. The connecting material and shell accessories are equipped by the surface treatment. The glass fused tanks can be used to store fluid or loose material. The tanks are also a fundamental building element of environrnental technological facilities such as waste water treatment and biogas stations. Rostfrei follows EEA (Europenan Enamel Authority) quality standards. The spark test for each panel is conducted according to EN 14430:2004. For Mohs Hardness and Chemical Resistance, Rostfrei follows EN 15771 and EN ISO 28706 respectively. C Project Update E W New Contracts/Expansions/Revamps The following list is a brief insight into the latest new projects by various companies in India.
CHEMICALS Shalimar Paints lays down the foundation of its Nashik manufacturing plant with a planned monthly capacity of 2,180 kilolitres. Set to commence operations by April 2019 with a planned production capacity of 2,180 kilolitres per month, Shalimar's state-of-the-art Nashik facility will increase the brand's overall production capacity by 65 per cent. It is also expected to stimulate the local economy by creating around 200+ employment opportunities for prospective jobseekers in the region. The newest Shalimar plant hints at the brand's aggressive push to capitalise on the growing market demand for its high-quality, high-performance paint and coating products, as well as to further consolidate its position as one of the fastest growing paints companies in the country. Shalimar has also pledged further investment into its Nashik plant and aims to establish it as a key component within its regional distribution network, as well as its pan-India supply chain. The paint industry has been growing at a rapid rate in India and measures between 1.5 to 2 times GDP growths. Rapid urbanization, better transparency and consumer evolvement has been leading the growth of the industry. Songwon Industrial Co Ltd a specialty chemicals company of South Korea has launched its new pilot plant in Panoli (Gujarat), thereby strengthening the organisation’s overall specialty chemicals development capability. Built on Songwon’s Indian site with all the necessary main unit operations, the new plant is equipped with the most up-to-date technologies and materials for producing a wide range of chemicals for a broad spectrum of applications - from one kilo up to several hundred kilo samples. To reinforce the organisation’s position in existing areas of business and enhance its ability to enter new areas, the new pilot plant will be supported by the Songwon’s strong local R&D team in Panoli, as well as its central technology innovation center located in Maeam, Korea. Insecticides (India) Ltd has announced a ` 200-crore expansion plan to increase its capacity in the next three years. In the first two years, it would spend about ` 100-crore, followed by an investment of ` 100-crore in 2020. The firm is planning to set up an Export Oriented Unit in Gujarat with an eye on increasing export component of the business. Exports contributed about ` 35-crore in the total turnover of ` 1,109-crore in 2017-18. The firm has a share of about 5 per cent in the ` 18,000-crore crop protection market in the country. MINING NTPC Ltd hopes its captive coal production will reach 100 million tonne as soon as its five coal blocks commence operations, aided by faster regulatory clearances and the part-privatization model of Mine Development and Operator (MDO). The success of the plan would determine fuel security of the operations of India's largest power producer. Coal India aims to raise output from its troubled Rajmahal mine in Jharkhand to 60,000 tonnes a day by March 2019, having resolved land-acquisition related problems which had crimped production to 20,000 tonnes per day. Coal from the Rajmahal mine helps NTPC run close to 4,200 MW of power generation plants in eastern India, which supply power to Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, and also to northern India including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. NTPC’s generation capacities were faced with depleting coal stocks and lower power generation as supplies from Rajmahal dwindled. Reserves at Rajmahal within the land 74 • January 2019
acquired by Coal India were almost exhausted and required expansion to keep production levels intact. However, land acquisition at two villages - Bansbiha and Taljhari - spanning 160 hectares, adjacent to the existing project turned out to be a lengthy process, as sorting out ownership issues resulted in inordinate delay. It led to drastic fall in supplies and stocks at the coalfield, as well as at two critical power plants in the region - at Farakka and Kahalgaon. At present, Coal India is using 15 goods trains to transport coal from the Rajmahal mine to power stations in the region. One goods train can load up to 3,500 tonnes of coal. Coal India is also sending five loaded goods trains from West Bengal’s Ranigunj coalfields to augment supplies at power stations. At present, the entire production from Rajmahal is getting delivered to power plants and there has been no stock buildup yet. CIL, ONGC to produce coal-bed methane from 10 new mines: support SAIL in one more. The Coal Ministry has identified 11 mines to produce coal bed methane (CBM). Of these, 10 will be worked on jointly by ONGC and Coal India Ltd (CIL). The two entities will also work on one mine with SAIL. Initially, ONGC will harness the gas and then CIL will extract coal from them …the first agreement for harnessing CBM through this route is expected to be signed soon. In addition to the mines with CIL, the two (ONGC and CIL) will also help develop Steel Authority of India Ltd’s Parbatpur coal block (Jharkhand). Here, too, ONGC will first harness the CBM. SAIL had surrendered the Sitanala and Parbatpur coal mines this year. In its representations while surrendering the Parbatpur mine, SAIL had said there was a reduction in the area available for coal mining due to overlapping of mining area. SAIL had engaged MECON to prepare a techno commercial viability report, which declared the project unviable. The SAIL board had then decided to return the Parbatpur mine to the Coal Ministry. OIL & GAS Indian Oil Corporation, with the final clearance from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), is all set to re-start construction activities at its ` 2,200-crore LPG import terminal-cum-pipeline project at Puthuvypeen near Kochi. Necessary orders in this regard have been issued by the Kerala government and the work is expected to commence in January. The NGT judgment has made it amply clear that there is no environmental pollution in the Puthuvypeen project. IOCL has adopted global standards on safety measures and one-third of the cost is being spent on safety. The risk analysis study conducted by Projects & Development India Ltd has estimated the risk factor in a million chances per year. The Kochi terminal, with the pipelines connecting the bottling plant, will eliminate the movement of bulk LPG by road, citing the removal of LPG tanker lorry movement from Mangaluru to Tamil Nadu after the commissioning of Ennore terminal. The Kochi project consists of an import terminal, multi-user liquid terminal (MULT) jetty, Kochi-Salem pipeline and the bulk LPG terminal at Palakkad with a total investment of ` 2,200-crore. Of this, the ` 225-crore jetty is ready and the company has invested another ` 160-crore for construction activities. The physical progress of the work is only 40 per cent complete, which includes ground improvement, land development, etc.Early completion of the project will ensure LPG availability to the households across the counter. Kerala presently has an average waiting period of 15 days to receive a LPG refill. This could go up if the infrastructure expansion does not happen. Referring to LPG consumption in the State, it was 8.4 lakh tonnes in 2016-17, which would touch 13.2 Chemical Engineering World
Project Update C lakh tonnes by 2022 and 22.7 lakh tonnes by 2028. India imports 50 per cent of its LPG requirements. With the boom in LPG requirement, imports are expected to go up. To meet the huge growth in volumes, infrastructure must be improved. LPG is imported through the major ports on the coast and there are 13 import terminals. Kochi is next on the list. The design of the terminal has been approved by regulatory agencies, who will inspect during the construction stage and prior to commissioning. CPC Corp of Taiwan is planning to invest $ 6.6 bn in petrochemical project in Paradip, Odisha. In this regard, delegation led by CPC president ShunChin Lee met the Indian Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas to discuss the proposal. With an annual production capacity of 15 million tonnes, the Indian Oil Corpn’s (IOC), Paradip Refinery was selected to host the new project, which will utilise the refinery’s feedstock. It will have many downstream units for the production of a wide range of end-products and petrochemical intermediates. The National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NITT) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) have jointly established a biogas plant with a capacity to process one metric tonne of kitchen waste from the hostel. The biogas plant called NISARGRUNA will process vegetable and food wastes and waste water generated from the hostel mess. The project was executed by the DTDDF (Department of Atomic Energy Technologies Display and Dissemination Facility) Centre that BARC had established in the NIT-T premises following a MoU signed with the institution last year. The BARC experts who briefed the NIT-T authorities about the operation principle said NISARGRUNA Biogas Plant will produce biogas containing 70-80 per cent of methane and only 30-20 per cent of carbon dioxide. Processing of one metric tonne of biodegradable waste creates will lead to production of 25-30 kg Methane gas and 5090 kg manure per day. In comparison, conventional Gobar gas plants have a single digester and produce biogas containing 55-65 per cent of methane and 45-35 per cent of carbon dioxide. The gas generated from the NISARGRUNA Biogas Plant will be used as fuel in the messes for cooking. The weed-free manure has high nitrogen contents and acts as an excellent soil conditioner. It offers ‘Zero garbage and Zero effluent’, and this technology will be more helpful for the kitchen and solid waste management at NIT-T. The NIT-T has identified five villages for pursuing UNNAT Bharat Mission. The DTDDF centre will implement the BARC technologies in the villages. Vedanta Ltd plans to expand its alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Odisha to 6 million TPA by 2021 using alternate bauxite resources as it looks beyond. The firm believes there are enough alternate resources of bauxite available to feed the expansion and has moved beyond the previously pursued high-quality bauxite beneath the pristine Niyamgiri hills. The Lanjigarh plant produced around 1.2 million tonnes of alumina last fiscal and has a current capacity of 2 million tonnes. Refusing to give cost estimates, while the plant currently imports 2.5-3 million tonnes of bauxite and sources almost an equal volume from domestic mines, the expansion project would need a total of 18 million tonnes of bauxite annually. Vedanta had intended to supply the refinery with bauxite extracted from the Niyamgiri hills by a mining company owned by the state government, which backed the project. But protests from local villagers led to the union government and the Supreme Court blocking the move in 2013. Odisha has 700 million tonnes of known bauxite reserves, of which Niyamgiri holds an estimated 88 million tonnes. Odisha has 70 per cent of India's total bauxite reserves, the world's fifth-largest. Currently, costly bauxite is imported from as far as Brazil and Guinea at a port in neighbouring Andhra Chemical Engineering World
Pradesh before being moved by trains 275 km to Lanjigarh. Vedanta has environmental and other clearances in place for the expansion and does not need any new land. Oil India Ltd has signed an agreement with five PSU JV Partners in Guwahati. This agreement is in connection with construction of North-East Gas Grid Pipeline project. The gas grid project will connect eight NorthEastern States, viz, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. The proposed JV Company will have equal equity contribution from all the five PSU JV Partners. Indian Oil Corpn (IOC) plans to invest ` 20,000-crore in city gas distribution (CGD) projects in the next five to eight years. IOC, which owns a third of India’s oil refining capacity identifies compressed natural gas (CNG) replacing some of the petrol and diesel consumed in vehicles today and LPG replaced by piped cooking gas in households. The company plans to invest at least ` 20,000-crore for the CGD business in those projects won during the ninth round of bids. The investment will mainly include setting up of CNG dispensing stations as well as laying pipelines in cities to transport gas to households for cooking purposes and industries for commercial use. According to oil ministry figures, India needs to invest an estimated $100 billion in natural gas infrastructure by 2022, including setting up a gas grid across 228 cities, Indraprastha Gas, India's biggest city gas retailer plans to add a record 60 CNG dispensing stations and give piped cooking gas connections to at least 2 lakh households this fiscal as it steps up efforts to achieve the government's target of a gas-based economy. IGL the company, which retails CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas to household kitchens in Delhi and its suburbs, has adopted a dealer-franchise model in the push for rapidly expanding the network. The company, with 452 CNG stations in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Rewari, has started to give the franchise to dealers who own land. The company, which currently has over 9.6 lakh piped cooking gas customers, has a target to add 3 lakh this fiscal. The government is aggressively pushing for use of CNG as a transportation fuel to cut on use of polluting liquid fuels like diesel. It also wants PNG to replace costlier LPG in kitchens with a view to cut oil import dependence and push up the share of natural gas in the country's energy basket to 15 per cent from current 6.2 per cent. India currently imports 81 per cent of its oil needs. In its push towards a gas-based economy, the government is targeting 1 crore PNG connections by 2020. The country, currently, has 45.26 lakh household kitchens using natural gas as cooking fuel. Gujarat has the highest number of PNG users at 19.07 lakh, followed by Maharashtra at 12.73 lakh. Delhi ranks third. Both, Gujarat and Maharashtra have multiple companies retailing CNG and PNG. In 2018-19, the government is targeting 20 lakh PNG connections all over the country, up from 12 lakh of 2017-18. In 2019-20, the target is 40 lakh. ENERGY Juwi group has completed a 135-MW solar PV plant for Energon Soleq Ravi India Power Resources in the southern Indian State of Karnataka. The plant covers an area of 243 hectares and is situated near the village of Guttigoli, Belgaum district. It is expected to generate more than 226 million kWh of electricity each year. INTERVIEW
Growing Faster than the Economy Alfa Laval has delivered an organic growth well over the country economic growth in the last one year. Going forward, the company plans to introduce new technology with a primary focus on process efficiency and lower life-cycle cost products and solutions relevant to the local market and excellent customer experience. Ananth Padmanabhan, Managing Director, Alfa Laval India Private Limited and Cluster President India - Middle East - Africa feels that India is a very competitive market, however, the industries must take a long term and sustainable approach, when they select equipment and technologies. What are your views on the changing market dynamics and how have the key divisions of Heat Exchangers, Separation and Fluid Handling fared in the last one year in India? We see a better appetite for investment, possibly driven by increased capacity utilization. It is more of existing players expanding capacities rather than major green field investors. Private sector investment is 78 • January 2019
yet to pick up speed, but, investments driven by efficiency and performance improvements are positive indicators. Overall, there is an improvement in the capital investment climate, but nothing exciting. As far as Alfa Laval is concerned, we have done well with our key technologies and all the product families are growing faster than the economy. In the beginning of 2017, Alfa Laval started to implement the new strategic approach to
increase organic growth. How is this vision being translated in India across the areas of customer focus, developing technology leadership and services? We have done well in our strategic journey. Getting closer to the customer, improving the response time, listening to customers and taking corrective actions, introducing new products and technical solutions relevant to the local market, strengthening our service presence, competence and offering service Chemical Engineering World
Interview solutions which focus more on equipment uptime than maintenance are some of the actions rolled out as a part of the strategy implementation. It is still work in progress, but the results are encouraging. “Proof of the pudding is in the eating” – the fact that we have delivered an organic growth well over the country economic growth is a clear signal that we are in the right direction. What is your observation on external and internal challenges in India? How do you plan to drive the competitiveness of organization? India is a very competitive market and the industrial sector is dominated by medium-sized enterprises. Except a few industrial sectors, market is also driven by local consumption. This poses a few challenges in the introduction of new technologies, which may look high cost initially, however taking the life cycle approach it will look different. Our industry must take a long term and sustainable approach, when they select equipment and technologies. The pace at which this change of approach is happening is not good enough, when we compare with many other developing economies. We have been making in India for the past 60 plus years and today our manufacturing facilities in India are global manufacturing units, which means, we export our India manufactured products to the global market. This has helped us upgrade the manufacturing technology, get better manufacturing volume and bring international specification / quality for the products manufactured in India. This promotes competitiveness. It is practically not possible for any multi-product, equipment technology company like ours to produce the entire product portfolio locally. I think the “Make in India” initiative should be used to encourage manufacturers to produce in India also for export, but not as a deterrent against import of better technology. In the long run this will affect the manufacturing segment. Tell us about the solutions offered by Alfa Laval to address future challenges in energy efficiency, water supply, and safe food and pharmaceuticals. What are the new technologies / innovations the company offers for the Indian market? Sustainability is an important element of our global vision. Our solutions are built on this vision. We have our core technology of heat Chemical Engineering World
transfer, which works with energy recovery and energy efficiency in a wide range of processes, from milk pasteurization to crude oil refining. Extending the thermal product technology to a system solution, we offer solutions on zero liquid discharge (ZLD) recovering water from waste water in process industries. Our separation technology, decanter centrifuges, are extensively used in municipal waste treatment process. We are working very closely with the major waste treatment plant manufacturers in the country, who are setting up plants including those under the “Namami Ganage” initiative. Ballast water treatment, treatment of sea water taken in as ballast and discharged into another sea by ships, to reduce marine life contamination is a key technology launched by Alfa Laval. This technology is now offered to Indian ship owners and have also set up a training facility in Mumbai for the convenience of Indian ship owners. On the bio-technology side, we offer our heat exchanger and separation technology to ensure high quality pharma production. A wide range of products and system solutions to the food industry ranging from Milk, Vegetable oil, Fruits, Fish, Starch, Sugar, Coconut, etc, is contributing in a big way in food preservation, enhancement of food quality and safety. Food and Pharma, Water and Energy will remain the major focus industries in the country. Our core technology products, solutions built around the core technologies and value-added service will be our offerings. In your view what are the key challenges for the manufacturers to be competitive in Indian market? Continuous improvement in offering and increased productivity is the key to be competitive. We still have a long way to go in terms of productivity, both in manufacturing as well as sales and marketing. It is necessary to embrace new technologies in production and sales. For instance, quality online presence will eventually replace physical face time. We are already seeing customers having lesser time for traditional face to face sales meetings. Our major differentiator with low cost competition is that we are not just a product supplier, but we offer technology, solutions and excellent pre- and post-sales service. Indian customers are willing to pay for these added values and the industry is changing, albeit slowly.
The Government of India envisages increasing the share of manufacturing in GDP to 25 per cent. In your view, how will this change the market dynamics? This is a very positive development for the technology providers like us. More than the increased opportunity for supply of capital equipment, this change will increase the demand on service. I also see a shift towards larger scale of manufacturing, since the scale up to 25 per cent cannot be achieved just by SME’s. This will also drive use of advanced technologies. Increased manufacturing share will drive export, which will also drive quality and process efficiency. The ambition of an increased share of manufacturing in GDP is achievable only if we can make the business environment attractive for export and increased FDI in the manufacturing sector. How does Alfa Laval plan to remain competitive and maintain the positive growth momentum? To optimize the performance of our customers’ processes - Time and time again. This means that we are a customer-focused company that supplies products and solutions that help our customers become more productive and competitive. New technology with a primary focus on process efficiency and lower life cycle cost, products and solutions relevant to the local market and excellent customer experience will be our strategy going forward. We are continuously strengthening our local competence and one such initiative is setting up of a competence centre in India for food processing with more than 200 engineers and process technologists. On the manufacturing side, we are continuously upgrading our manufacturing process, which will improve productivity. Availability of information online and easy access to Alfa Laval will be the key in making it easy for customers to do business with Alfa Laval. We are confident that implementation of our strategy, viz, becoming customer’s first choice – a service offering which ensures zero down-time – an agile, swift-footed and empowered organization which will ensure excellent customer experience, will keep us in the lead.

INTERVIEW Interview
“Water & Energy Management will be High Potential Areas for Simon India” Rakesh Verma, CEO & Whole-time Director of Simon India Ltd has been in the EPC industry for about four decades. During his tenure he has witnessed the evolution of this industry from very close quarters in India as well as internationally. In an exclusive interaction with Chemical Engineering World (CEW), he takes us through the evolutionary journey of his career and growth of this industry. “I think I have been very lucky to have joined this industry when the Offshore EPC industry was at a nascent stage in India and had the opportunity to work under the prudent guidance of many the-then industry stalwarts,” Verma reminisces. Rakesh Verma started his professional journey as a trainee project engineer in Engineers India Ltd (EIL) in the year 1981 soon after finishing his engineering from IIT Roorkee. This was around the same time when India had taken cognizance from the anticipated increase in the energy demand and had commissioned its first offshore platform in the year 1979. Early Years During his work-tenure with EIL, he got quite a few offshore work opportunities with some renowned process and well platforms 80 • January 2019
projects for very prestigious organizations such as ONGC, Chevron, Kellogg Brown and Root, Petro Canada, Philips Corporation etc. to name a few. Though he quit EIL in the year 1993, he says that working on these international projects provided him ample exposure to work in different geographies, multiple projects, experience to work with people from different nationalities and most importantly the latest offshore technologies. He very fondly remembers working on Floating Production Storage & Offloading (FPSO) facilities in those years which gave a real high at that time and very helpful for the later part of his career. Soon after leaving EIL, Verma joined the project execution team of Triune Projects which was working on some of the prestigious
offshore and onshore projects at that time and had more such projects in its kitty. His new role provided him an opportunity to handle onshore projects of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) in Mathura and Digboi. “Triune was one of the best places to work in those years as we had a great team of professionals who would put in lot of efforts and innovative ideas from concept to commissioning of the projects,” he remembers. That was the time when many technical professionals were shifting overseas due to ample opportunities there but Verma decided to stay back in India, and today, he feels that as the best decision at that point of time. This was the beginning of a new phase in his career and also for Triune Projects which created a leadership path for him and he, very successfully led many projects. This was the time when he, along Chemical Engineering World
Interview with Top management patrolled around the globe for marketing of Triune Projects and with their assiduous efforts organizational turn-over increased by two and a half times. He very fondly remembers the strong team mates with whom the organization could serve eminent clients across the globe, mainly in Europe and Korea, like Daewoo, Samsung, Exxon Mobil, Bouygues Offshore now known as Saipem. He proclaims, “I learnt one of the most valuable lessons in this phase of my life and that is one can manage the risks only by never keeping all the eggs in one basket.” Till today, he lives by this mantra!! Domestic vs International During all this, Verma had gained deep insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian EPC industry and seen the dependency for offshore projects on international consultants from Japan, Korea and to some extent from the USA. He recalls, “I observed that though the Indian project owners depended on foreign EPCs, but these companies employed several Indian engineers who worked on the projects. And I am glad to say that we could break this glass ceiling and Indian contractors started competing with other foreign players like – Hitachi, Mc’ Dermott, Saipem, Daewoo, Hyundai etc. and with MDL did a few process platforms with facilities located in Mumbai and Mangalore. Verma expresses, “One of the best parts of having MDL was that they always had surplus inventories. By this time the engineering was standardized and all that we needed was the fabricators who could deliver the platform on time. We had very good experience with MDL as they delivered the platform of international quality within stipulated time frame.” He adds that this was a very positive sign for the Indian manufacturers to grow as the Government had started to invest in energy projects which meant a huge window of opportunity for domestic players. However, contrary to his thoughts, due to lack of projects, a few fabrication yards were closed down like Mangalore yard owned by MDL and the Jelingam yard owned by Burns & Standard too could not turn into profitable venture. Since India was an open market for the projects at that time, with large experience Chemical Engineering World
it was much easier for the international players to win the contracts. He feels that with support from the authorities, perhaps this could have been different. Post 10- 15 years of independence, India had started building engineering capabilities. Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd (IPCL) established in 1969 was India’s one of the most important projects build with the idea to meet the burgeoning demands of Indian economy and reduce import dependency. This was a huge development as this saw the participation of Dawson and construction companies like Larsen & Toubro, along with few players from India’s public sector units and some international companies. Verma notes, “The next few years were not so great I would say for the EPC industry in India as there were not major projects on the downstream side and very few projects in energy sector, that too owned by the Government. However over the period of time there has been an increase in projects in chemical downstream, oil & gas, infrastructure etc., which has opened many avenues for the EPC services in India.” Opportunities Galore I think EPC industry is in a sweet spot now and the growth of EPCs will be driven by refining, fertilizers, LNG and infrastructure industries. Verma has garnered extensive project across multiple industrial sectors in project execution, is well aware about the pain points and most importantly about how they should be addressed. According to him, the fertilizer industry has the highest potential and the other areas where he sees ample opportunities are renewable energy, energy efficiency, innovative ways of waste management, water management, e-waste treatment, and all those kind of things, which are part of ‘Smart City Project’. He emphasizes, “Energy Efficiency in itself has a huge potential irrespective of the nature and type of industry.” Industries are focused big time on increasing energy efficiencies and investing in technologies for heat recovery and reuse which results in very high ROIs. Simon India Pvt Ltd has recently commissioned the heat recovery project for Dalmia cement plants in Rajagangapur in Odisha. Verma is very proud of this achievement and informs, “We have
developed it with a goal of 9.2 MW output. But in reality, it superseded the target by producing 10 MW output and this is sufficient for in-house requirements. In this way, we consider it a very successful project”. In his view, synergistic partnerships a great way towards creating win-win situations and one of the examples is the MoU his company has signed with Ecophos Ltd , a Belgian company for phosphate technologies for the fertilizer industry. EcoPhos is an explicit example of ‘Make in India’. Very recently, the company has forayed into the gas sector and bagged its first ever project of working on Mundra LNG terminal. Simon India is already working on international projects in Saudi Arabia and under the leadership of Verma, the company is now gearing up for the next phase of growth in domestic as well as international markets. “Though we are looking at projects across the entire value chain of hydrocarbon industry in India and overseas, our prime focus is in the South East Asia. In this region, Indonesia and Vietnam are of interest to us as both the countries are investing in building the petrochemicals capacities,” he informs. “Smart Cities is going to be a very high potential area as this would deem necessity of technology oriented solutions for sewage treatment, effluent treatment, and water related aspects including water community,” he comments Consolidation & Growth “We have taken the consolidation approach and take control of our growth. If you look at the numbers, our revenue has increased 100 per cent during the last fiscal and we are targeting 100 percent growth during the current year,” he explains. To achieve the goals, company is already working on multiple dimensions with a very strong focus on the traditional industries that we have been serving and expanding into new sectors, exploring new opportunities in domestic and international markets, contemplating expansion and synergistic partnerships. He signs off saying “From company as well as the industry perspective, we are doing well in the industrial sectors of oil and gas, fertilizers, refineries etc. however, as a national drive, Simon India Limited would pursue water management and energy efficiency sectors in a longer run.”

What role do India operations play in the global growth strategy of group? Which are the strategic markets the company serves through Indian operations? Since last few years Asia has played a big role in the global growth. Kelvion too is experiencing the same. India is emerging as the highest growth center for the global growing scenario with solutions for the energy and water management solutions for various industrial sectors as I have mentioned in my previous answer. Some of the technologies that I would like to mention are air cooled solutions with adiabatic systems, pollution control solutions for the refining industry especially in the process of desulphurization which is very critical to comply with the environmental norms. We see ample scope for our technologies here as this sector is witnessing major growth in India with the refining capacity expected to touch 315647 MMTPA by 2020. We also provide heat recovery and AFC solutions for
the refineries, which is our largest business in the country. Indian chemical industry is projected to grow at 8-10 percent and reach USD 300 billion by 2025. What kind of opportunities do you see coming up for heat exchange solutions? Globally, we have a range of solutions that we offer to the industry in India. At present, we see a huge demand for reliable products like ‘anodically protected shell & tube heat exchangers’ for the sulphuric acid manufacturing and chloralkali industries which showing high growth in India. We offer not only new `Plate heat exchangers in various material of construction but also offer full services and spare parts of any kind of plate type heat exchangers. Availability of water is one of the most critical challenges that the chemical industry continues to face in India. Kelvion pioneers in providing water Chemical Engineering World

conservation studies along with the heat recovery solutions by utilizing ‘pinch studies’ of process plants. We have very successfully completed the studies across various process plants and enabled the chemical manufacturers reduce the water & energy consumption levels hence save significantly improve their operational costs. This will continue to be one of our key focus areas for the chemical industry. What are the new products in the pipeline for Indian and international markets & please tell us about the growth strategies chalked out by the company. See, Kelvion is well recognized in the industry for high efficiency plate technologies and providing economical advantage to customers on alternative solutions to ‘Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers’. It is noteworthy to mention that in the multi-effect evaporation systems, Kelvion has done most pioneering work and demonstrated reduction of steam demand & energy consumption by utilizing the company’s hybrid heat exchanger plates. We very proudly say to process engineers to think of Kelvion for steam demanding applications. Kelvion has proven solutions
Chemical Engineering World
for reducing energy consumption in the distillation columns and many other solutions to meet the requirements of our customers. Make in India’ is has become the buzz word today as the government is aggressively promoting this initiative. How does Kelvion India plan to leverage on this opportunity, and what are the future plans of company? Make in India, Creation of Global Innovation Centers (GICs), digitalization, IoT through cloud computing is making India shift from labor arbitrage to technology arbitrage. Kelvion India too has understood this pragmatic shift and taken steps to create a global hub providing the design and engineering support besides being a manufacturing center for the `Core’ product supply to Asian countries. These capabilities exist in India and we are well equipped to harness these in Kelvion India. With Kelvion R&D centers in Europe, our engineering center in India is well connected thus globally increasing the competitiveness of Kelvion by winning over the challenges of competition from various countries. It is noteworthy that India is slowly taking over the China as the manufacturing factory of the world. The unchallenged IT backup with
skilling India program is at its best India and Kelvion India is changing the dynamics of business operations. Modularization of the core product and local hubs of assembly center across the world are presumably the logical solutions. I strongly feel that `Energy Management’ and `Water Conservation’ are national responsibilities of every process Industry and also of the companies that are offering solutions. Presently, Indian manufacturers are facing heavy burden of energy bills since our process plants are not as energy efficient as one may see in Europe or Japan. What I have observed is typically, the investors follow the CAPEX driven approach that is based on L1 model and in the process they fail to look at the OPEX, the operational cost that they incur in the long run. I strongly believe that the project owners must change this approach and factor CAPEX + OPEX right at the time of concept which will enable them to increase the profitability of process plant over longer periods. With almost 100 years of experience in providing advanced technologies & efficient solutions, Kelvion will continue to understand the changing needs of the customers and be the right partner for energy and water management solutions.
