Management Contractors • Don’t often directly employ tradesmen • Trades apprentices employed via supply chain (mechanical, electrical, bricklayer, decorator etc) • Limited to office based/admin apprentices • Sometimes employed trainee quantity surveyors, site engineers, site admin • Social value often influenced through Considerate Constructor Schemes
Britcon UK Ltd • 2 time served admin apprentices – document controller and business administrator • 1 apprentice assisting commercial team • Construction apprentice – yard and site based • Trainee site engineer • Work experience from local schools
YORBuild • Increased involvement with YORBuild heightened awareness of social responsibility requirements • Employment Skills Plan and Method Statement • Method of capturing and documenting what we do • Engagement with Re’New • More focus on local community engagement and support, businesses, educational facilities, youth and community centres
Tropical World • Our first YORBuild scheme • Work with Re’New with intent on bettering targets • Worked collaboratively with supply chain – ensure from the outset that they understand their requirements and allocate resource. 113% of target achieved • Bespoke work experience – 12 weeks achieved = 400% target • Local operative and joiner employed – 100% of target • Schools/college visits – 150% achieved
Current Schemes • Currently engaged in 3 YORBuild schemes • Use of lessons learned and continual improvement • Within 7 weeks – 4 direct employments created, 3 work experience placements, 1 school visit • Involved in community forum meetings • In process of arranging college visit to timber frame factory, graffiti art to site hoarding, work experience with Youth Centre, University project/case study, school H&S workshop
Going Forward • Membership of Re’New’s Construction and Housing Yorkshire who provide advice, support and bespoke consultancy to businesses and organisations. • Use the YORBuild principles on other, traditionally procured schemes • Work closely with supply chain to assist in finding apprentices, through YORBuild partner, Futureworks • Encourage site teams to buy into social responsibility
