B-DU DU? Da kann ich nur sagen: Hula Hula! Hyper Hyper! Hossa, Hossa! Jalla Jalla! Hala Hala!

Was hat es damit eigentlich auf sich?

MNK Das habe ich von ATEEZ, der koreanischen Popgroup. Sie singen „Hala Hala“, was soviel heißt wie „Hearts Awakened, Live Alive“. Diese Bedeutung verblasst aber, wenn man sie performen sieht. Den Impakt habe ich übernommen. DU DU war als Klang sofort da. Es gab Dada, dem ich, als Folgegeneration, A-Klasse gönne.

Die K-Pop-Videos sind durch ihre Bildkomposition spannend, weil sie auf ein „Bild“ hin ausgerichtet sind. Sie sind wie gemacht für die flache Darstellung. Wenn du sagst, dass diese Videos mit deinen Arbeiten zu tun haben, wird da natürlich ganz viel aus einem Bildkosmos geschöpft, der zunächst auf dem Bildschirm stattfindet. Wahrscheinlich findet auch der Research zu deinen kunsthistorischen Referenzen am Bildschirm statt. Anders kann ich mir nicht vorstellen, was die Bilder von Jean-François Millet mit K-Pop-Bildern als Quelle zu tun haben?

MNK Mein Auge reagiert auf ein bestimmtes Muster. Ein Gemälde von Millet scheint weit entfernt von einem Schnitt aus dem Musikvideo. Doch der Unterschied ist gar nicht so groß. Wir sehen beides Mal gemachte Bilder. Einmal von K-Pop-Idols, die jeden Schritt minuziös vor dem Spiegel einstudieren, und dann vom Maler, der ein unverwechselbares Bild produzieren will.

Das Absurde an den K-Pop-Bands ist in meinen Augen, dass alle extrem uniform sind und auch nur eine kurze Existenz haben, bevor sie wieder aufgelöst werden. Ist das Grundmotiv, das sie verkörpern – quasi die perfekte Schönheit der Vergänglichkeit –, das, was dich interessiert? Bei der Malerei wäre ja das Gegenteil der Fall, die soll langlebig sein.

MNK Ja, es ist wohl nicht vergleichbar. Das Dasein der K-Pop-Idols ist wirklich schnell vergänglich.

Doch die Malerei kann auch ein kurzes Leben haben. Ein Bild, das nicht gesehen wird, verliert sein Dasein. Selbst ein so berühmtes wie die Mona Lisa. Heute ist sie gefeiert. Aber wie lange noch? Irgendein Idiot oder Verrückter oder ein Genie beweist eines Tages, dass sie doch kein Meisterwerk ist. Dann wird sie ab dem nächsten Tag nicht mehr gesehen. Bei Malerei gibt es immer dieses Missverständnis, sie bestünde ewig.

Ich mag den Gedanken der Vergänglichkeit von Malerei, den du ins Spiel bringst. Gerade die Mona Lisa wird doch hauptsächlich in Form von Reproduktionen optisch konsumiert und gar nicht als Original. Und selbst wenn man im Louvre steht, sieht man sie auch nur aus einem Kilometer Entfernung, weil vor einem 5000 Leute mit Audioguide rumstehen. Ich frage mich, ob wir ohne Vorwissen erkennen würden, dass sie ein Meisterwerk ist? Also, ist sie so viel besser, als alle anderen Bilder? Und was macht diese Starqualität der Mona Lisa aus? Das frage ich mich gerade in Bezug auf deine Arbeiten, wo es darum geht, durch Analyse die Qualitäten eines Bildes herauszuschälen, um daraus deine abstrakten Bilder zu generieren? Geht es da auch um Perfektion?

MNK Nicht wirklich. Ich strebe nicht so sehr nach Perfektion, sondern nach etwas Komischem in den Bildern. Ich habe eine Radierung mit Seenlandschaft von Dürer und eine Ölskizze von Puvis de Chavanne benutzt (Dürer X de Chavanne XXXIX, Abb. S. 8). Das würde sonst niemand auf den ersten Blick erkennen, außer die beiden Künstler selbst, wenn sie noch lebten. In ihren Landschaften ist alles unstimmig. Das hat mich dazu bewegt, daraus ein Bild zu machen.

Glaubst du ihrer Bilderfindung oder ihrer Idee vom Bild? Was ist es, was du ihnen abkaufst?

MNK Auf Dürers Blatt sind eine junge Frau und ein älterer hässlicher Mann im Vordergrund zu sehen: Sie haben gerade ein Geschäft geschlossen. In die geöffnete Hand nimmt sie Geld von ihm an.

Ich bin mir aber sicher, dass es Dürer vor allem um die Herstellung des Bildes ging. Ich sehe, dass er das Literarische aus dem Bild zu drängen suchte.

HS

Wenn du ihnen also glaubst, dass es nur um das Bild als solches geht und nicht oder weniger um das dargestellte Narrativ – zielt darauf auch der Untertitel deiner Ausstellung Bildsprache des Unliterarischen? Willst du darauf hinaus, dass ich dir glaube, dass deine Bilder richtig sind?

MNK Wenn Menschen die Bilder der anderen solange gesehen haben, bis deren Spinnereien zu ihren eigenen Produkten geworden sind, dann haben sie alle recht.

HS

Ich habe dich kürzlich in deinem Atelier besucht, welches mehr oder weniger fensterlos ist. Du hast keinen direkten „Ausblick“. Wenn wir aber hier in der Ausstellung stehen, zeigt sich, dass deine Bilder fast ausschließlich Landschaften sind. Aber es sind scheinbar immer Landschaften aus zweiter Hand, sie bieten keine realen Ansichten. Diese zweite Hand ist die analytische Hand, die malerische Hand, die methodisch mit der Wirklichkeitsbeobachtung eigentlich nichts gemein hat. Wenn du sagst, auch Dürer und Kollegen haben ja nicht zwangsläufig in der Landschaft gestanden und die Realität abgebildet, sondern eine Interpretation geleistet, dann heißt das auf dein Atelier übertragen, dass es eine Art Analyselabor ist. Fast hermetisch abgeschlossen, mit einer relativ kleinen Tür. Man muss in so ein Mauseloch eintreten, um in deine Welt zu gelangen. Dort liegen sehr viele Papierarbeiten herum, die vermutlich Vorarbeiten zu deinen Bildern sind. Spiegeln die Papierarbeiten den Denkprozess?

MNK Ich denke gerne. Es beflügelt mich. Außerdem kann man das rund um die Uhr betreiben. Und man hat das Gefühl, als wäre man fleißig.

Du hast Les Printemps von Millet als eine deiner Hauptquellen erwähnt. Das Bild stammt aus dem Jahreszeitenzyklus. Jede Jahreszeit basiert auf einem anderen Farbenspektrum. In deinem fensterlosen Atelier erarbeitest du aus einer Bildanalyse heraus diese Jahreszeitenfarben und erschaffst dir eine Art Farbenmythologie, die komplett künstlich ist – die Bilder können überraschend grell sein, mit einem leuchtenden Magenta zum Beispiel. In der Galerie wird dieser Eindruck noch verstärkt. Man steht vor künstlichen Bildräumen mit artifiziellem Farbspektrum.

Doch sind sie bei dir im Atelier auch schon in einem artifiziellen Raum entstanden. Handelt es sich um eine Idealvorstellung?

MNK Ich habe im Atelier eine komische Situation geschaffen. Habe vom Handwerker eine Malwand bestellt und ging in Urlaub. Als ich zurückkam, war die Wand noch nicht fertig: Sie befand sich im Rohzustand, ein beige-grauer und leicht roter … vielleicht doch auch grünlicher Rigips. Bis heute ist die Wand in diesem Zustand geblieben. Es macht das Ganze grauer und dunkler. Morgens hab’ ich ein bisschen Licht von links, abends ein bisschen von rechts, ansonsten bleibt alles im Halbdunkel. Diese Atmosphäre ist für mich wie die Luft, die ich als Kind eingeatmet habe – da war ein Maler, der wohnte in einem sehr schönen Haus, schwarz gebrettert, kupfernes Dach, und hatte drei schöne erwachsene Töchter.

Das klingt wie eine Sage.

MNK Die mittlere Tochter nahm mich einmal mit zu dem Maler. Daraufhin habe ich ihn oft besucht. Er arbeitete im Dunkeln, saß immer im Rollstuhl an der Staffelei. Ich habe die Ölfarben gerochen.

Es wurde für mich zu einem selbstverständlichen Ort – exterritorial sozusagen –, obwohl er kaum etwas gesprochen hat.

Später war ich an der Akademie. Es war dort hell wegen der vielen Fenster, was ich als sehr unruhig empfand. Aus Trotz habe ich das elektrische Licht angemacht. Das war so grell, dass ich alles drumherum auszublenden imstande war. Scheinbar brauchte ich die Erfahrung, wie die Farben im Halbdunkel feuchter und inniger werden.

HS

Die Ateliers der Düsseldorfer Akademie haben fast alle gigantisch große Fenster, die auf der einen Seite auf den Rhein schauen. Ich kann dir zustimmen, dass man dort tagsüber eigentlich gar nicht arbeiten kann, weil es zu pittoresk ist. Man muss bis abends warten, bis es draußen dunkel ist, damit man das Licht anmachen kann und die Malerei irgendwie echter aussieht.

MNK Wo wir gerade über die Farben reden – in letzter Zeit sind deine Bilder grau bzw. gräulich.

HS

Wegen des Corona-Lockdowns konnte ich keine neuen Farben kaufen. Da fiel mir ein, dass, wenn man alle Farben zusammenrührt, das perfekte Grau dabei herauskommt. Und deswegen sind diese Bilder auch gar nicht so grau, sie scheinen immer ein bisschen bunt zu sein, je nachdem, wie das Grau zusammengemischt wurde. Dasselbe Bild kann einem daher superbunt oder monoton grau vorkommen. Es sind zwei Vorstellungen vom selben Bild.

Aber zurück zu deinen Arbeiten. In Düsseldorf ist dir also so eine deutsche Landschaft vor den Kopf geknallt worden, auf die du eigentlich nur gewartet hast, um sie künstlich zu sehen, zu interpretieren und in Form deiner Bilder in die Jetztzeit zu holen. Wobei deinen Bildern klar anzusehen ist, aus welcher Tradition sie kommen. Aber in ihnen herrscht natürlich der medial geschulte Blick von heute, und auch kulturelle Diskrepanzen scheinen für Distanz zu sorgen. Ich würde mal behaupten, dass du, die noch einen anderen, den japanischen, Kulturraum kennt, dich in einer besseren Position befindest, die europäische Malerei zu „überblicken“.

MNK Ich möchte nicht gerne auf meine Herkunft angesprochen werden, weil sie mir nicht so wichtig ist. Auch ich leide an meiner nationalen Kultur wie Deutsche manchmal an ihrer, mir geht es mit ihr wie dir mit Dürer. Dennoch kann ich an dieser Stelle zwei Japaner nennen: Hokusai war ein Genie, genau wie Sesshu. Hokusai hat seine Unkenntnis der Perspektive durch seine Bilderfindung kompensiert. Sesshu hat seinen Bildraum in das Bild hineingebaut. Hätte Cézanne das gekannt, wären ihm manch mühselige Arbeit erspart geblieben.

HS

Was hat es mit dem Serientitel Disarming – „Entwaffung“ – auf sich? Fühlst du dich in deiner Ausstellung oder während der Eröffnung entwaffnet oder, im Gegenteil, bewaffnet mit deinen Bildern? Ist das für dich angenehm oder unangenehm, wenn sie von dir abgenabelt werden?

MNK Disarming ist nur eine Übertragung. Francesco Albani (1578–1660) benannte mythologische Motive mit diesem Titel, während er eigentlich abstrakte Bilder malte. Er hat oft Dreiecke in seine Bilder eingebaut, die aus Figuren bestehen.

Vor der Eröffnung stehe ich da mit den Bildern an der Wand. Jetzt können die Betrachter kommen. Jetzt sind sie am Zug. Es mag zwar interessant sein, das, was man im Netz findet, vor dem Original nachzuvollziehen, dies ist aber nicht die einzige Möglichkeit.

Du und ich – wir, die Künstler, sind bereit. Wir haben uns lange genug damit beschäftigt, die Malerei zu behaupten und zu verteidigen. Nun wird es aber Zeit: Wir malen – hier sind die Bilder und in ihnen die Gedanken!

B–DU DU MAKI NA KAMURA IN CONVERSATION WITH HENNING STRASSBURGER HS

B-DU DU? What can I say: Hula Hula! Hyper Hyper! Hossa, Hossa! Yalla yalla! Hala Hala! What’s it all about?

MNK I took it from ATEEZ, the Korean pop group. They sing “Hala Hala”, which means “Hearts Awakened, Live Alive”. But that meaning fades when you see them perform. What I’ve borrowed is their impact. DU DU appealed to me immediately. There was Dada and, as someone coming later, I don’t begrudge it its A-list status.

HS

K-Pop videos are interesting because of their composition, the way they are geared towards a “picture”. They lend themselves perfectly to two-dimensional rendering. When you say these videos are related to your practice: there’s a great deal of borrowing from visual worlds that takes place initially on a screen; presumably your research on art-historical references also takes place on screen. I can’t imagine any other link between Jean-François Millet and K-Pop as sources for your work …

MNK My eye responds to a certain pattern. A painting by Millet may seem far removed from a music video, but the difference is not so big. In both cases we see a constructed image. In one case the image of K-Pop idols who painstakingly rehearse every step in front of the mirror, and in the other the image of a painter who wants to produce an unmistakable picture.

HS

What strikes me as absurd about K-Pop bands is that they’re all extremely uniform and that they have just a brief existence before being disbanded. Is this basic motif they embody – the perfect beauty of ephemerality – what interests you? In painting, the opposite applies, it’s meant to be long-lived.

MNK Yes, I guess they’re not comparable. The existence of a K-Pop idol really is ephemeral. But painting can be short-lived, too. A picture that is not seen loses its existence. Even such a famous painting as the Mona Lisa. Today it is celebrated. But how much longer? One day, some idiot or madman or genius will prove it isn’t a masterpiece after all. And from then on, it won’t be seen any more. With painting there’s always this misunderstanding that it will last forever.

HS

I like this idea of the ephemerality of painting. The Mona Lisa in particular is consumed primarily in the form of reproductions, not in the original. And even if you’re standing in the Louvre, you only see her from a kilometre away because there are 5000 people standing in front of you with audio guides. I wonder if we would recognize her as a masterpiece with no prior knowledge?

As so much better than all other paintings? And what gives the Mona Lisa this star quality?

I wonder about this specifically with regard to your work where the focus is on using analysis to bring out the qualities of a picture in order to generate your abstractions. Does perfection play a part here?

MNK Not really. Rather than striving for perfection, I look for something funny in the pictures.

I used an engraving of a seascape by Dürer and an oil sketch by Puvis de Chavanne (Dürer X de Chavanne XXXIX, see page 8). No one else would recognize this at first glance, except the two artists themselves if they were still alive. In their landscapes, something doesn’t add up. That prompted me to turn them into a picture.

Are you convinced by their visual invention or their picture idea? And why?

MNK The Dürer print has a young woman and an ugly older man in the foreground. They have just made a deal. She is taking money from him in her open hand. But I’m sure Dürer’s main interest was in pictures. As I see it, he was trying to exclude the literary dimension from the picture.

HS

So if you say that they’re interested in the picture per se and not so much in the narrative, is that also the meaning of your show’s subtitle, Visual Idiom of the Unliterary? Are you trying to make me believe that your pictures are right?

MNK Once you’ve spent so long looking at other people’s pictures that their crazy ideas turn into products of your own, then everyone’s right.

HS

I recently visited your studio, which is more or less windowless. You have no direct “view”. But standing here in the exhibition, it’s clear that your paintings are almost all landscapes. But they always seem to be second-hand landscapes; they do not reproduce actual views. The second hand in question is the analytical hand, the painterly hand, which in terms of method has little in common with the observation of reality. When you say that Dürer and the others didn’t necessarily stand in the countryside and portray reality, but that their work was an interpretation, then transferred to your practice that would make your studio a kind of analytic laboratory. Almost hermetically sealed, with a relatively small door. To enter your world, then, one must walk into a kind of mouse hole. Inside, works on paper lie strewn about, presumably preliminary sketches for your paintings. Do these works on paper reflect your thought process?

MNK I like to think. It quickens my senses. Added to which, you can do it round the clock. And you have the feeling of being hard at work.

HS

You mentioned Millet’s Les Printemps as one of your main sources. This painting is part of his series on the seasons in which each season is based on a different colour spectrum. In your windowless studio, you use image analysis to ascertain these seasonal colours and create a kind of colour mythology that is entirely artificial – the resulting paintings can be surprisingly garish, with a bright magenta, for example. This impression is further reinforced in the gallery, where one faces artificial pictorial spaces with artificial colour spectrums. But they were also created in the artificial space of your studio. Do they represent some kind of ideal?

MNK In my studio, I’ve created a funny situation. I contracted a craftsman to build a wall for me to paint on, and then I went on holiday. When I got back, the wall was not yet finished; it was still raw plasterboard, beige-grey and reddish … maybe greenish. The wall has remained in this state ever since. It makes everything greyer and darker. In the morning I have a little light from the left, in the evening a little from the right, otherwise everything remains in semidarkness. This atmosphere is like the air I breathed as a child – there was this painter, he lived in a beautiful house, with black wooden siding and a copper roof, and he had three beautiful grown-up daughters.

HS

Sounds like a legend.

MNK The middle daughter once took me to meet the painter. After that I would visit him often. He worked in the dark, always sitting in his wheelchair in front of the easel. I would smell the oil paints. It became a place I took for granted – exterritorial, so to speak – although he hardly ever said anything.

Later I was at the Academy. It was bright because of the many windows, which I found very noisy. In defiance, I would switch on the electric light. It was so glaringly bright that I was able 20

to block out everything else around me. I seemed to need this experience of colours becoming more vivid and more familiar in the semidarkness.

HS

Almost all of the studios at the Academy in Dusseldorf have gigantic windows that look out over the Rhine. I would agree that it’s almost impossible to work there during the day, because it’s too picturesque. You have to wait until evening, until it’s dark outside, so you can switch on the light and the painting looks somehow more real.

MNK On the subject of colours – your recent pictures are grey or greyish.

HS

During the covid lockdown I was unable to buy new paints. And I remembered that if you mix all of your paints together you get the perfect grey. Which is why these pictures are not actually as grey as all that, they always seem to be a bit colourful, depending on how the grey was mixed.

The same picture may appear enormously colourful or monotonously grey – as two ways of seeing the same picture.

But let’s get back to your work. In Dusseldorf, then, a German landscape was slapped down in front of you, and you immediately knew how to see it artificially, to interpret it, and to bring it into the present in your work. Although when looking at your pictures, it’s immediately clear which tradition they belong to. But there is also today’s media savvy gaze, and cultural discrepancies also seem to create distance. I’d say that as someone who also knows a different cultural space, that of Japan, you’re in a better position to gain an overview of European painting.

MNK I’d rather we didn’t talk about my origins, because they are not that important to me. I, too, suffer from my national culture, just as Germans sometimes suffer from theirs; it’s the same for me as for you with Dürer. But I can name two Japanese artists: Hokusai was a genius, and so was Sesshu. Hokusai compensated for his lack of knowledge of perspective with his pictorial inventions. Sesshu built his pictorial space into the painting. Had Cézanne known about this, he would have been spared his labours.

HS

Why did you use Disarming as the title for this series? Do you feel disarmed in your exhibition or during the opening? Or do you feel armed with your pictures? Do you find it agreeable or disagreeable when your ties to them are severed?

MNK Disarming is just something I borrowed. Francesco Albani (1578–1660) used this title for mythological motifs, while actually painting abstractions. He would often include triangles in his pictures, consisting of figures.

Before the opening, I stand there, my pictures are on the wall. Now the viewers can come. Now it’s their turn. It may be interesting to compare what you can find online with the originals, but that’s not the only possibility.

You and I – as artists – are ready. We’ve spent long enough affirming and defending painting. But now it’s time: we paint – here are the pictures and in the pictures are the ideas!
