7th Annual Abilene Gives sees record nonprofit participation and giving KASSIDY
Whatadifferenceaday,or12hours,makes!ThegoalofAbileneGivesistocreatean opportunityforourcommunitytosupportlocalcausestheypassionatelycareabout andengageanewgenerationofphilanthropists.OnMay2,2023,thegivingdaywas anothergreateventforlocalcharitablecauses!
Ourcommunityanddonorsraisedmorethan$2.1MILLION,including$515kfrom morethan30donor-advisedfunds,for170nonprofitorganizationsservingAbilene andthesurroundingregion.
DuringAbileneGives,donor-advisedfundholdersmadegiftstotheirfavoritenonprofits fromtheirfundsortosponsorshipopportunities.100%ofsponsorshipdollarswent directlytoparticipatingnonprofitsaseitherabonusprizeorintotheamplificationfund. Theamplificationdollarsawardedtoanonprofitarebasedontheirorganization's percentageofthetotalamountraisedforAbileneGives.

Special thanks to our breakfast sponsors, First Financial Bank and First Financial Trust.TheCommunityFoundationofAbilene(CFA),withsupport frompubliccontributionsanddonor-advisedfunds,has awardedmorethan$1Mtovolunteerfiredepartments (VFDs)inthelastyear.Thisincludesmorethan$267k awardedduringtheVFDgrantcycleearlierthisspring.
ThesegrantfundsprovideaddedsupportforVFDsto purchasethesafetyequipmentneededtoserveand protectourneighborsincommunitiessurroundingAbilene. Theirrequestsrangedfrompersonalprotectivegear (structuralandwildland),firefightingfoam,radios,SCBAs (self-containedbreathingapparatus),partialfundingfor trucks,additionstofirestations,andfireshelters(wildland). Thedepartmentswerealsoreimbursedfortruckrepairs, tires,andreplacinghosesandnozzlesduringtheEastland ComplexandMesquiteHeatfires.
TheNorthLakeBrownwoodVFDisjustoneexampleofa departmentwhoreceivedagrantinthelastyear.In2022, NorthLakeBrownwoodwasawardeda$12kgrantto purchasebunkergear.Soonthereafter,theEastland Complexfireshappened.Withdonorsupport,the
Foundation provided an additional $14k grant so that wildland gear could be purchased as the volunteer men and women had been fighting the fires wearing their jeans.
The VFD grant cycle opens at the start of each new calendar year. Grants range from $5,000 to $25,000 and departments from the following counties are eligible: Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Fisher, Haskell, Jones, Kent, Knox, Mitchell, Nolan, Runnels, Scurry, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Taylor and Throckmorton.

TheFoundationhasmultiplegrantcycleseachyearavailableforeligiblenonprofitsbasedongeographiclocationandprogram focus.Beforefinalgrantfundsareallocatedbyacommittee,donor-advisedfundholderscanrecommendgrantsfromadonoradvisedfund.Donorssimplyrecommendagrantbemadefromtheirfundtoacharitableorganizationoftheirchoosing,andthe CFAstafftakescareoftherest.
InFY23,donor-advisedfundsprovided12%ornearly$120ktowardthe totalawardedinourcommunitygrantcycles.Grantsrecommendedbydonors fromtheirestablishedfundssupportthecausestheycareaboutthroughoutthe year.Toourdonorsandsupporters,THANKYOU!

TheCommunityFoundationofAbilenepresentedarecordscholarshipawardamount, morethan$983kinawardsto223students.AreceptionwasheldattheNational CenterforChildren’sIllustratedLiterature(NCCIL)wheredonorswhoestablishedthe scholarshipfundswereinvitedtomeetthestudentswhowereselectedasaward recipients.
Scholarshipssupportstudentspursuingspecificpostsecondarycareersor certificationsintradessuchasweldingandmechanics.Thesescholarshipfundsare establishedinpartnershipwithourgenerousdonors.
DonorsworkwiththeFoundationtosetthecriteriafortheirfund,suchasdesignating theawardforstudentsfromspecificschoolsorforstudentsstudyinginaparticular field.TheFoundationmanagesmorethan120scholarshipfundsthatsupport deservingstudentsintheBigCountry.
HeisanengineeringgraduateoftheUniversity ofTexaswholaterfoundedWes-TexDrilling Companyin1954.MyrleGreathousebecame hispartnerinthecompanyshortlythereafter. Thecompany’ssuccessshowedhisbeliefin hardworkandeducation.Bobwouldbeproud ofthescholarshipopportunitiesestablishedin hisnamethroughtheWes-TexDrillingCo.RobertCockrellMemorialScholarship.
