Life’sWork

our mission

The Community Foundation of Abilene empowers people to make a lasting charitable impact on our community. We connect donors to causes they care about, manage strategic investments to preserve our endowments, make grants that align with donor intent, respond to community needs and provide philanthropic leadership to enhance Abilene’s future, today.

he people of Abilene know what it means to be a community. This is how I felt during my first year as the Foundation’s President/CEO in 2009.

Having celebrated 15 years in this role, I am certain that the work we accomplish here, thanks to generous donors, hardworking nonprofits, and selfless volunteers, is life’s work.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Whatever your life’s work is, do it well.”

Since moving to our downtown home in 2018, we have experienced extraordinary growth. Our assets have doubled, exceeding $200 million; we have increased our annual grantmaking, which totaled more than $19.6 million this past year; and this academic year, a record $1 million in scholarships were awarded to students.

In 1985 our founders created an organization that would help Abilene at the time and be flexible enough to grow and change throughout the years. Here we are at another significant moment for the Community Foundation of Abilene.

In 2020, we purchased the adjacent Cloud Printing building, envisioning its transformation into a dynamic nonprofit meeting center and additional office space for the Foundation.

Friends of the Foundation and our donors have brought this vision to life. Thank you to those who have supported and inspired gifts towards the project helping it become a reality and an investment in our long-term growth.

As the Foundation prepares for the future, we remain steadfast in connecting our donors to needs and opportunities, enabling us to continue realizing our vision of a thriving community.

This report shares stories about the life’s work of individuals, families, and organizations. We are grateful to each of you who trust the Foundation to build on your visions and dreams and to be a part of your life’s work.

The community’s needs are ever-changing, and the Foundation works hard to serve and help others. New funds and programs continue to be created, further strengthening the Foundation’s financial stability and capacity building. This work is work worth doing. I am honored to serve as the board chair for an organization that supports donors and nonprofits in many ways.

the Family

Life

Eric’s grandfather built a successful business in his lifetime. His life’s work provided his greatgrandchildren an opportunity to understand their unique gifts and match those to the community’s needs by giving and sharing.

ou might find a calendar in the kitchen at the family home –birthdays, practices, school events, and other important dates. Flip to the month of May, and for the Emerson family, the first Tuesday is a day they can’t miss. One of their favorite days, Abilene Gives.

This community-wide giving day has served as a unique opportunity for parents Katie and Eric Emerson to teach their children about giving back.

The Emersons have strong values. Keeping family first, caring about others, and supporting their community.

Eric’s first job after graduating from Abilene Christian University was as a public accountant, but a few years ago, Eric became a third-generation car wash operator. When Eric and his father, Ed, sold the business in 2023, Eric remembered the Community Foundation of Abilene.

Having worked on nonprofit audits at Condley and Co., one of Eric’s clients included the Foundation. Eric knew about the advantages of donoradvised funds (DAFs), including the tax benefits.

Katie and Eric established their fund, and Eric encouraged his parents, Ed and Jana, to create one.

Katie is passionate about children and youth, and she and Eric are often seen actively volunteering at their children’s local schools or nonprofit organizations like Breakfast on Beech Street (B.O.B.S.).

Raising Parker (age 11) and Avery (age 8) to have a charitable worldview is important to parents Katie and Eric. The Emersons have utilized their DAF to engage in impactful philanthropy, allocating charitable Abilene Gives contributions each year. Special selections are made by Parker and Avery, who also get to decide where gifts are made.

Whether the cause is sports for Parker or animals for Avery, both Katie and Eric have seen confidence in the philanthropic decisions Parker and Avery make.

Eric’s grandfather built a successful business in his lifetime. His life’s work provided his greatgrandchildren an opportunity to understand their unique gifts and match those to the community’s needs by giving and sharing.

Showing kindness may come naturally, but hands-on experience teaches children to become compassionate adults. Abilene Gives has allowed Katie and Eric to involve their children in making a meaningful impact.

wanted to give back in honor of Hayes and show the love of Christ to others.”

Friends and family organized a fundraiser to raise funds and support. Family friends, Allicyn and Ted Evans, recommended establishing a scholarship fund at the Community Foundation of Abilene. From donations made at the fundraiser, a scholarship was established, and the creation of a nonprofit organization, Stick Horses and Capes, was founded.

When donors are interested in creating a scholarship, the Foundation works with them to set the criteria for the fund, such as designating the award for students from certain schools or those pursuing specific educational paths or fields of study.

“Hayes was all boy,” Marshall says fondly. “He loved being outside, going to the lake, fishing, and farming. He was working to save for his first horse. Hayes loved life, his family, and Jesus!”

Proverbs 27:19 says, “As the water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the person.” In developing the scholarship fund, the Pinkstons knew the criteria had to reflect Hayes’ spirit for the outdoors, farming and ranching.

Thus, the Hollis Hayes Pinkston scholarship gives back by helping someone who shares the same passions as their little guy did.

Seth Gerhart of Winters, Texas, was one of the earlier scholarship award recipients. In May 2024, he graduated from Texas Tech University with an agricultural degree.

The family’s story now focuses on the Foundation scholarship in Hayes’ name and the ongoing efforts of their nonprofit, Stick Horses and Capes, which provides financial assistance to bereaved families who have lost a child.

There are more than 140 scholarship funds at the Community Foundation of Abilene. Many of them were established to honor someone who was deeply loved and is dearly missed. Their names live on, paving new futures for deserving students.

There was only one Hollis Hayes Pinkston. His story continues as more students learn about him as they apply for this scholarship.

In 2023, the nonprofit established an additional fund, the Stick Horses and Capes Sibling Scholarship, to help siblings of bereaved families.

… Each year that passes, more and more are reflecting the heart of that five-year-old cowboy and the other families whose children will not be forgotten.

Above: Seth Gerhart, scholarship award recipient. Center Bottom: Hollis Hayes Pinkston. Right: Shelley, Tatum, and Marshall Pinkston.

“Hayes was all boy,” Marshall says fondly. “He loved being outside, going to the lake, fishing, and farming. He was working to save for his first horse. Hayes loved life, his family, and Jesus!”

t isn’t just what you leave; it’s what you create. At the Community Foundation, we help donors’ charitable giving go further by helping them support causes for years to come.

The Foundation also collaborates with estate planners, financial advisors, accountants, and attorneys to help their clients with charitable planning, like local attorney Mr. O. Henry (Mike) Young, PC, of the Mike Young Law Firm.

For more than 60 years, Mike’s practice has focused on wills, trusts, probate, and elder law, which is how he met Mrs. Nina Gifford and her husband, James.

Mike worked with James to establish a family trust. After the death of her husband, Nina made those key decisions on the fund. As time passed, Nina knew she needed to make decisions regarding her trust.

It is often said that education is the key to success in life. AEF is a local organization that supports postsecondary education in collaboration with the Abilene Independent School District (ISD).

AEF was created to enhance and inspire excellence in education for Abilene ISD students and teachers. One way it accomplishes this mission is through the COOL program.

Established in 2007, College Offers Opportunities for Life, “COOL,” is a college advising program. The program places a fulltime college advisor at each local high school, partnering with counselors on those campuses. COOL advisors assist under-resourced students or those who will be the first in their families to attend college, working with qualifying students to fill out necessary financial aid and scholarship applications. Advisors also schedule college tours.

Since its start, COOL has helped nearly 6,000 students earn those keys to begin their journey after high school.

Mrs. Nina Gifford (1930-2023) entrusted her attorney, Mike Young, with expertise in education-related organizations. Mike’s knowledge of the Community Foundation and the option for endowed funds made the Nina Gifford Fund for AEF COOL Program possible today and tomorrow.

Donors value the expertise their professional advisors offer. Advisors can count on the Community Foundation of Abilene to provide deep knowledge about accomplishing clients’ philanthropic goals.

Nina wanted her estate to benefit children and youth. Mike, who had recently completed serving on the board of the Abilene Education Foundation (AEF), knew just the nonprofit that Nina could consider.

With thoughtful estate planning, donors can be assured that their assets will support our community beyond their lifetimes. This assurance offers our donors the promise that the spirit of their philanthropy will endure.

The impact this gift will have on the Abilene Education Foundation’s COOL program cannot be overstated. Nina’s support will continue to benefit countless young people in Abilene ISD for generations to come.

Life’sWork

Building on 40 years of legacy

vision that started nearly 40 years ago on the twentieth floor of the tallest building in Abilene continues to come to life as the Foundation grows in grantmaking and assets.

Because of Judy Matthews and her life’s work, a gift from the Dodge Jones Foundation established an endowment in 1985 and supported our operations. The very nature of endowment creates permanence. It’s the assurance and commitment to serve our communities forever. Endowment is truly the investment that supports generosity for generations.

Since moving to our new home in 2018, we have experienced extraordinary growth. At that time, we celebrated reaching $100 million in assets, and since then, our assets have doubled, now exceeding $200 million. This growth has allowed us to increase our annual grants from $6.5 million to an impressive $19.6 million, expand our team, and enhance our support to donors and nonprofit organizations.

Now, we are at another pivotal moment. In 2020, we purchased the adjacent Cloud Printing building, envisioning its transformation into a dynamic nonprofit meeting center and additional office space for the Foundation.

This project goes beyond renovation; it is a chance to establish a central hub for collaboration, essential resources, and community support.

We are thankful to those who helped us capitalize on this vision. The Foundation has raised the funds needed to begin construction. Here’s what we’re creating together:

1. Revitalization of the Cloud Printing building

Our $3.8 million project will breathe new life into this 15,000-square-foot historic building. Key upgrades will include accessibility improvements and a refreshed streetside facade. This transformation will turn the building into a beacon of community spirit and collaboration.

2. Nonprofit meeting center

The renovated space will feature meeting rooms, training facilities, and collaborative workspaces available to local nonprofits. This expanded capacity will boost our ability to support these organizations with training, resources, and networking opportunities, amplifying their impact on the community.

3. Additional office space

As our current building is fully utilized, the new center will provide essential office

space to accommodate our growing staff and services, allowing us to further expand our impact and serve the community effectively.

The decision to relocate has proven to be a catalyst for positive change, leaving an undeniable mark on the Foundation and the entire fabric of our community.

Such an investment is not to a single organization but an entire community’s well-being and development. The shared commitment of our donors and the spirit of teamwork of nonprofits supports our mission.

This has been our life’s work.

NonprofitCompass

Our region’s online directory of nonprofit organizations

Our 12-hour giving day, Abilene Gives, introduces the community to our local nonprofit landscape. However, what happens next? After nearly 4,000 people interact with causes, how do these local givers remain connected?

Abilene, meet Nonprofit Compass – a centralized location featuring a fully searchable online directory of nonprofits in our region.

Nonprofit Compass is a year-round, everyday online resource. Nonprofit Compass was created to help donors engage in the causes they care about and invites our community to explore our area’s nonprofit community.

Each nonprofit’s profile contains information on its mission, history, impact, programs, business practices, financial statements, and more. There is no rating or grading of nonprofits associated with The Nonprofit Compass. All information is self-reported by the nonprofit.

The Foundation’s goal is to establish organizational transparency that empowers donors to make more informed and strategic giving decisions. Throughout the year, the CFA uses Nonprofit Compass to provide donors and the public with nonprofit updates and opportunities for engagement.

So, how does it work?

This online database allows the community to research organizations by simply using a name and/or keyword search. Once you have located a nonprofit of your choice, browse through their profile to learn more about the organization, programs, financial information, and legal details. You can also see job openings, volunteer opportunities, board openings, and wish list items.

If you wish to learn more about a specific nonprofit, information is on each profile to contact the organization directly.

Don’t see a nonprofit listed in the directory? Eligible nonprofits can submit a request to create a free profile. Nonprofit Compass allows nonprofits to tell their story at all levels.

Since its launch in December 2023, we have heard success stories from nonprofits of all kinds—VFDs serving our rural communities now have websites, agencies have recruited new board members, and nonprofits have stewarded their relationships with donors.

“City Light Community Ministries has greatly benefited from having access to Nonprofit Compass,” said Stephanie Stewart, City Light Director of Community Ministries. “As a small organization without a website, this service allows us to effectively share our mission, vision, and values with potential donors.”

Stewart shared that in the first few months, the organization received a significant donation from an individual outside of Abilene who had heard about their ministry and wanted to partner.

The Nonprofit Compass increases awareness of the nonprofits in our area and offers these organizations an accessible platform to share their stories of impact.

If you are a nonprofit, learn more about requesting your free profile at nonprofitcompass.org.

Future Fund

Future Fund is a membership-supported endowment fund of the Community Foundation of Abilene to benefit local organizations. Membership dues are pooled into the endowment, the money is invested, and the fund grows. Revenue is used to make grants each year to nonprofits serving children and youth.

During the 2024 Future Fund grant cycle, more than $92.8k was awarded to 26 nonprofits serving kids in the Abilene community. More than half of the funding support, $49,300, came from community contributions and donor-advised funds held at the Community Foundation of Abilene.

An additional $3,500 was awarded during the summer membership social at the Abilene Zoo. These awards benefited nonprofits serving back-to-school needs.

Future Fund members and the power of endowment make this happen. At fiscal year-end, the endowment had a balance of $989,008.
