The Daytona Black Clergy Alliance and the Daytona Beach Police Department wants local residents to take advantage of Operation Safe Surrender. The event will take place at Master’s Domain Church of God in Christ on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The church is located at 511 Freemont Ave. The Daytona Beach event is designed to give people with outstanding warrants a chance

to clear up the issue. It is open to residents living in Volusia County. “It’s another way for us to give an opportunity for our people, especially in our community a chance to work out warrants, driver license, identity issues and others. We want to make sure that we avoid police conflicts and get our people back to being productive citizens again,” said Derrick Harris, president of the Black Clergy Alliance and pastor of Master’s Domain. Noted Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood, “There are thousands of warrants for minor offenses like driver license suspension, child support, drug possession, open container and theft. People often run from the law, which puts

Volusia cities’ improvement coalition hosting environmental conference An Environmental Justice Conference geared toward non-profit organizations, governments, community stakeholders, students, scholars, artists and environmental health professionals is scheduled for April 20 in New Smyrna Beach. Dr. Deanna Wathington, executive dean of BethuneCookman University’s College of Health Sciences, will discuss how the environment affects health at the free conference, which is Dr. Deanna open to the public. Wathington Environmental engineers and community redevelopment staff will define brownfields and environmental justice and discuss community perspectives.

April 2 marked the second annual Out of the Box Fashion Show sponsored by Cameron Enterprises, LLC; Deliverance Outreach Ministries, Mitzi’s First Impression Hair Salon; and Kimeca’s Design Element. The first names of the organizations and ministries make up the women’s empowerment team called CDMK. The show was held at the Chisholm Community Center in DeLand and attracted a packed house that included vendors and designers from North and Central Florida. A portion of the proceeds from the show was donated to support cancer care and research at Florida Hospital Deland Cancer Institute. Featured designers were Elle Pausch House of Style, NediA Collection, Klassy Kouture, KimiKo, First Impressions Hair Salon, Fashioned for Faulousness, Tutus by Mosella, Styles by Jean Pierre and Poppin by Javi. B-CU to present opera, jazz and more during free Spring Concert Highlights from the popular folk opera “Porgy and Bess’’ will be presented Sunday, April 10, by Bethune-Cookman University’ s Concert Chorale. The songs will be performed during the university’s Spring Concert at the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center, 698 W. Scholars, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, community stakeholders, students, environmental health professionals and artists are urged to participate. The conference is 9 a.m. to noon at the Alonzo “Babe’’ James Community Center, 201 N. Myrtle Ave., New Smyrna Beach. The conference is being hosted by Southeast Volusia Corridor Improvement Coalition (SVCIC), which is comprised of the cities of Edgewater, Oak Hill and New Smyrna Beach. The SVIC received $600,000 in assessment funding through a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Community-wide Petroleum and Hazardous Substance Assessment Grant. Funds may provide financial support and technical assistance for brownfields activities by promoting partnerships, assessing environmental conditions, strengthening the economic marketplace, sustaining reuse of underutilized properties and protecting public health and the environment. Band, conducted by Donovan Wells, will offer the community an evening of entertainment featuring sounds from George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” as well as “Rhapsody in Blue.’’ In addition, the Symphonic Band will welcome special guest pianist Dr. Hezekiah Brinson Jr. The concert is a family affair. It’s free and open to the public. B-CU’s first lady, Florence E. Jackson, will host a pre-performance reception from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
