Tampa-based Moffitt among top cancer hospitals SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDA COURIER

Ranking improved

TAMPA – Moffitt Cancer Center is the No. 1 cancer hospital in the Southeast based on the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Cancer rankings released Tuesday. Florida has more than 260 hospitals. Seven are nationally ranked and 26 others meet standards for strong performance within the state. U.S. News has recognized Moffitt for 16 years in a row. Located in Tampa, Moffitt is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, a distinction that recognizes excellence in research and contributions to clinical trials, prevention and cancer control.

Moffitt is No. 16 overall in cancer, up from No. 19 last year. The national Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 25th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients – those whose illnesses pose unusual challenges due to underlying conditions, procedure difficulty, or other medical issues. “Moffitt is honored to be acknowledged by U.S. News as one of the top cancer hospitals in the nation and the top cancer hospital in the Southeast,” said Alan F. List, M.D., president and CEO of Moffitt. “When it comes to serious and complex cancer cases, Moffitt rises to the top in providing the highest quality patient care and outcomes that beat the national

average. This is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our clinical and research staff who support our focus on personalized cancer care and cuttingedge translational research.” U.S. News also recognizes Moffitt as high-performing in Ear, Nose & Throat; Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery; Gynecology; Nephrology; and Urology.

Ranks cancer specialties U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. In most specialties, it ranks the nation’s top 50 hospitals and recognizes other high-performing hospitals that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers. “The data tell the story – a hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much

to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings editor. “Just 3 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed earned a national ranking in even one specialty. U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties. A complete list of rankings is available online and will appear in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals 2015” guidebook, available in next month.
