DID HE STAND HIS GROUND? A church drummer whose car broke down on I-95 in South Florida was shot dead by a plainclothes cop. Questions abound. COMPILED FROM WIRE REPORTS

PALM BEACH GARDENS – The 31-year-old Florida man shot and killed by a Palm Beach Gardens police officer Sunday legally bought a gun just three days before his death, according to police. Palm Beach Gardens Police Chief Stephen Stepp claimed that Corey Jones of Boynton Beach was holding that gun when Officer Nouman Raja, 38, who was in an unmarked police car and plain clothes, was investigating what he thought was an abandoned car. In response, Raja shot Jones, Stepp said. Stepp released the information about the gun, among other new details,

in an abruptly announced news conference Tuesday. He said the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, and he could release only a limited amount of information to avoid compromising the sheriff’s examination. Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg is also investigating.

Raja, working a burglary detail, was parked in a lot near the area, Stepp said. Thinking the car was abandoned, Raja drove up to investigate. At the same time, Stepp said, Jones, holding the gun, confronted Raja. Stepp said the gun was found on the ground at the scene and its box was in Jones’ car. President silent about forensic audit BY THE FLORIDA COURIER STAFF

DAYTONA BEACH – BethuneCookman University presented its highest honor, the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Leadership Award, to Florida Gov. Rick Scott Wednesday night despite a public outcry that prompted the school’s president to churn out a response to “allay all fears” about the university’s future on the eve of the event. The morning of the Legacy Awards Gala held at Daytona Beach’s Ocean Center, B-CU President Edison O. Jackson addressed the award flap and other issues relating to the university in a long letter to stakeholders.

‘Shadows of doubt’

KIM GIBSON / FLORIDA COURIER

The fall football season is well underway, with the University of Miami’s Joe Yearby running hard in UM’s victory over Virginia Tech last week. This week, Bethune-Cookman University and Edward Waters College celebrate Homecoming, and FAMU’s Rattlers take a week off.

“Over the last 60 days, various media outlets have circulated news that cast “shadows of doubt” on the administration’s ability to effectively manage and lead the University. To address these allegations, I decided to write you directly in an effort to dispel these rumors and allay all fears, so that you can celebrate all we have accomplished over the last 111 years,” Jackson wrote.
