Rowing is a team sport that requires cooporarion, comitment, and perserveirence. These six members of the Cleveland Rowing Foundation posses all three of these qualities. In order to get to know them and what they do, here is a little about the sport and what each girl does.
How often are practices? Monday-Saturday.
Where does the team row? Cuyahoga River
What are competitions like? 2000 and 5000 meter races
Boat Breakdown: First Set: Coxswain Followed by stroke seat, 7 seat, 6 seat, 5 seat, 4 seat, 3 seat, 2 seat, and the bow seat.
Ieva adams Seat: 3 seat. Years Rowing: 1 season Why Rowing: I row because I love trusting my teammates and I love the sport. Future Plans: I plan on rowing in college and maybe being a coach one day.
Hope Regalo Seat: Stoke Years Rowing: 1 year rowing Why Rowing: I row because of the close community of the team and the support that everyone offers me. I also row because I love the way my body changes when I’m in season and the way it makes me feel. Future Plans: In the future I see myself rowing throughout the rest of high school.
Ellie Covington Seat: 7 seat. Years Rowing: 3 years Why Rowing: I am rowing for so amny reasons, I row because it is an outlet, my great teammates, and the way rowing makes me feel. Rowing was the first thing that I have been truly passionate about and I will be forever greatful for the experiences rowing has given me. Future Plans: I am planning to continue my rowing career in college in the fall of 2018.
Bella Rizzo Seat: 6 seat Years Rowing: 1 year Why Rowing: I row because I love being part of something that has so much passion. Future Plans: I hope to take up a future in rowing, maybe in college or maybe just for fun.
Senior Spotlight
Claudia Bunker Seat: Stroke Years Rowing: 4 years Future Plans: Going to Boston College in the fall I started rowing because I hadn’t found a true passion until I came across the sport. I love the fact that you win as a team and you lose as a team; it’s all or nothing. In soccer or lacrosse, individual players can have a good game, while in rowing if everyone doesn’t perform then you don’t get anywhere. Also the fact that our team is made up of people from all over Cleveland is really cool too.
Lauren Boral Seat: Coxswain. Years Rowing: 4 years Future Plans: Attending Cincinnati Univesity in the fall I decided to join rowing the spring of my freshman year. I was never exceptional at previous sports I had taken part in, whether it was swimming, golf, tennis, volleyball, or soccer. In fact, I had a pretty rough season playing soccer the fall of my freshman year which involved hating every minute of it and undergoing knee surgery for tearing cartilage in my knee. I was in need of a fresh start and that, conveniently, was when rowing came into my life. Once I started, there was something about it that made me feel like I could stick with it. Like it was somewhere where I could belong. Rowing has done so much more for me than I could imagine a sport could. Rowing is something I needed in my life for many reasons. Firstly, it provides me with a sense of structure and routine- something I know I can always fall on when all else goes wrong. Rowing helps me stay active and makes me think about how I can better my health each day. In my opinion, rowing is the most beautiful sport there is. We’re not kicking a ball around a field or hitting balls on a court. We coast through rivers and lakes with some of the most amazing views. There’s nothing like the feeling of gliding on water as the sun sets behind buildings and bridges. Rowing has helped me overcome one of my greatest fears: speaking. As a girl that’s fairly shy, it took some time for me to fully embrace my position as a coxswain. With each day that passed, I would feel more and more comfortable telling teammates what to do and screaming with all my energy during races. As I became a better coxswain, I would win medals at regattas- a sign that I was actually alright at a sport. At this point, nothing could take away my desire to win as many as I could. I’ve met a countless amount of people from rowing, and have made friends that I will never forget. I feel lucky to have had the chance to get to know people from other schools- it’s very important to me to branch out from my own town and expose myself to what else is out there. From practice to regattas there is a special bond that CYRA never fails to show. It’s this bond that motivates me to cox to the best of my abilities. For my last reason, I row because there is no better feeling than knowing you’ve changed someone’s mind and helped them get through a race. Being able to make that much of an impact on someone is indescribable and I’m going to want to experi-
