“Wellness

The Child and Family Guidance Center is a LA County Department of Mental Health (DMH) contractor that provides Specialized Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) services to children, transition age youth, and adults utilizing evidence-based treatment interventions (EBPs) that are consistent with LAC/DMH Mental Health services Act (MHSA).

The Center also provides families with access to a comprehensive continuum of services depending on the needs of the family ranging from once a week; time limited mental services (PEI) to intensive in-home services that are delivered several times a week with 24-7 availability for crises.

The Community Resource Services is a division dedicated to improving the quality of life for special needs children and their families by helping them to locate, access and effectively use essential community health and social services.

LGBTQ+ Youth Program

It is a leadership program with a social justice lens available for free for youth, ages 12-17, who identify as LGBTQ+, immigrant, people of color, and/or straight allies interested in making new friends, discussing life issues and ideas that matter to them, learning about mental health, diversity, inclusion, the power of community, advocacy, organizing, and social justice.

Virtual Community

Many families say meditation and mindfulness help their child focus, cope with stress, and “quiet the mind.” These apps can help your child learn to meditate and be mindful. Many of them include guided meditations.

Sesame Street app It’s great for introducing very young children to the concept of calming down through breathing. The app teaches kids the “Breathe, Think, Do” method. Kids help an animated monster facing a frustrating situation to calm down by taking long, deep breaths. Afterwards, they help the monster think of a solution and do it.

Insight Timer app, as well as the ability to refine sessions based on how long you must practice. Furthermore, it comes with an in-app progress keeper that enables you to chart your progress and earn badges for the time you've spent meditating.

Calm is a meditation, sleep and relaxation app. Calm creates unique audio content that strengthens mental fitness and tackles some of the biggest mental health challenges of today: stress, anxiety, insomnia, and depression. The most popular feature on Calm is a 10minute meditation called, 'The Daily Calm,' that explores a fresh mindful theme and inspiring concept each day. The Calm app is free to download, and some free content is available, but a paid subscription to Calm Premium unlocks access to Calm's entire content library.

Smiling Mind offers hundreds of mindfulness activities for children of all ages. In addition to breathing meditations, the app has sensory exercises, like listening to music. The app also keeps track of when kids meditate.

Three Good Things: A Happiness Journal

This free journaling app can help children build mindfulness based on a simple premise: If children write down three good things that happen to them each day, they’ll feel happier. They can use the app to set a reminder to write each day, and they can look over past journal entries.

UCLA Mindful app helps you learn to focus on your breath, your body, or sounds; work with difficult emotions; and cultivate loving-kindness in sessions ranging from 3 to 19 minutes long. The app also offers longer meditations that it calls “podcasts.” These are half-hour audio recordings of meditations that include talks, typically by UCLA Director of Mindfulness Education Diana Winston, before and after the meditation.

Healthy Minds Program app wants to help you develop the skills for a healthy mind, by decreasing stress, and growing resilience, compassion, and better immune health. The app is organized into four pillars: Awareness, Connection, Insight, and Purpose.

MINDFULNESS WITH PETIT BAMBOU. It's particularly well suited to children. There’re guided meditation sessions for adults, but children will love the relaxing sounds feature of the app, which allows them to home in on a cartoonish scene come to life (like a roaring fireplace, or a rainstorm) that definitely inspires tranquility.

Cost: $8.50 a month or $72 a year, or a one-time payment of $280.

Headspace is a meditation and mindfulness app. They offer guided meditations, animations, articles and videos. Using Headspace, you can learn the essentials of meditation and mindfulness with their free Basics course, but you will need to subscribe for regular use.

Cost: Free Language: English Available in the App Store and Google Play store.

THE MINDFULLNESS APP is an app for people who have previously practiced meditation. Rothman says it allows you to create a custom session with flexible time periods, from 3 to 30 minutes in length, and select sounds like bells to best fit your needs.

Cost: Free, with optional in-app subscriptions of $60 for one year.
