Facebook Visits Mary Washington Campus Taylor Ross Reporter

Congressman Rob Wittman along with Facebook representatives presented an online safety forum at Mary Washington on May 9th, in conjunction with the Congressional Youth Forum. The forum focused on putting information on the internet, and knowing your privacy settings on Facebook. When first starting a Facebook, its usually a race to see how many friends you can get, as fast as possible. “You’re not actually popular if you’re only popular with people you don’t even know,” Brooke Oberwetter, Facebook representative said. While sending requests to everyone you see in the “People You May Know” column in the top right of the home screen, Facebook is actually not a popularity contest. It is great to have a lot of friends, but make sure

bullying, abuse or unwanted viewers. Facebook users are able to customize their accounts, and decide who gets to view their profiles, pictures, statuses, and comments at any given time.

Facebook is generally supposed to be used by ages 13 and up, however, for those ages 13 through 18, there are special privacy settings. Users in this age group are automatically protected more than users who are older, to prevent them from being contacted from any online predators. “In the privacy settings on Facebook, if a user between the ages of 13 and 18 chooses for ‘everyone’ to see their profile, ‘everyone’ won’t actually see it; only the people they are friends with can see their profiles.” says Brooke Oberwetter. Facebook representatives work around the clock, around the world to make sure users are protected from bullying, hacks, and online predators. In case you were not aware, Harold Camping, a talk show radio host as well as a Christian preacher, predicted the end of the world to occur on May 21st, 2011. Actually, he called for the Rapture to occur on May 21st, and to follow it a five month period in which all of the remaining humankind will be... stung over and over again by scorpions. (Or

something.) Not only does Camping’s site also insist that the Earth was created 11,013 years ago (again and again maintaining that its dates are “completely accurate”), but it also contradicts itself, saying at one point that God sees days as 24 hours, and at another that one day for God is 1000 years. Despite

Camping’s prediction being completely wrong, his website explaining the date remains live. Predictions of the world’s end have come before, even from Camping himself. In 1992, Camping predicted the end of the world to come on September 6, 1994. Of course, there is also the ever-popular

prediction of an end of the world to occur on December 21st, 2012, most famously predicted by the Mayans. Even though modern day Mayans disagree on the point that any Apocalypse type event is occurring, people still cower from the date 2012, and don’t even bring up December 21st, 2012, lest you get cold clocked in the jaw. Other

movies, such as Armageddon (1998), Knowing (2009) and Children of Men (2006) explore other possible apocalyptic events. This morbid fascination with the end of times seems to be a recurring theme. But why? Is it that people want to feel there is a time where their sins will be forgiven? Or that they feel it will put them on an equal footing with everyone else? For some, death is a scary thought, unless every other person on the planet is dying with you. Whether or not Harold Camping will determine another date with his crackpot formula for cranking out Armageddon dates remains to be seen, but as far as I’m concerned rather than trying to accelerate the end of the world, we need to be making sure we make our time on this earth as productive as possible.

Student Gives up Graduation for Musical Performance Kyle Doescher Reporter

Since freshman year, the class of 2011 has been looking forward to, maybe even dreaming about, walking across the graduation stage and receiving their diploma. However, some students have different dreams to pursue that prevent them from participating in the graduation ceremony with their fellow classmates. Senior Lucas Vangeison is one student that will not be able to attend graduation because he has been selected to perform with the Carolina Crown Drum Corps this summer. For those of you that have never heard of Carolina Crown or drum corps, it

is basically a professional marching band that travels around the United States and performs almost every day for two months during the summer. “It’s like going from high school and being drafted straight into the major leagues,” says Assistant Band Director Larry Cauley during the Spring Percussion Ensemble Concert. Mr. Cauley has Drum Corps experience and acted as a mentor to Lucas during the highly competitive audition process. It is very rare for a high school student to have enough talent to participate in an activity that consists of the best drummers in the world but Lucas is an

exception. In order to learn all of the moves and music for their summer show all Carolina Crown member are supposed to report for camp by May 20th which is not an issue for most participants because they are college students. However, this created an issue for Lucas because it would mean that he would have to graduate early with the school board’s approval. After meeting with Dr. Martin and explaining his need for early graduation to the school board his request for release on May 20th was denied, however they agreed to June 1st as his last day of school. Lucas was very displeased with this decision because arriving late to

Print goes audio

Natalee Rombough Photo Editor

Being a parent, chemistry teacher, and friend is what Mr. Juan Chaves is known for. However, as of two years ago, he has earned the title of author. “[The book I wrote] the year before last, is the first in a trilogy. I did all the voices for it, so it’s now finished and already an audio book.” “I finished writing the second book last year. I’m working on the final edits of the second book now, and hope to have it out before too long.” Mr. Chaves says. Not only will the second book be in print, it will also be available in an audio book format. The voices in the second book will be voiced by members of the Colonial Forge Drama Department. “The auditions [for the audio book] were held right before spring break, and they went really well. There are some really talented people in drama who are interested in helping out with it.” said Mr. Chaves. The casting list will be narrowed down to about twenty spaces and the release date is not yet determined. The second book is an audio book, but that’s not the only thing that makes it unique. “I filled up two passports, front to back, with different stamps from different countries. I thought it would be neat to write a story that incorporated all the different really amazing places I’ve been in the world. So every scene in the book is based off a place that I’ve traveled to.” Also the characters in the book are special. “All of the characters in the book are based on real people that I’ve known or interacted with in my life. My two daughters love the fact that the two main characters of the first book are based on them.” You can buy Mr. Chaves’s book at www. planetkorgg.com or bring nine dollars to Mr. Chaves in his classroom, room 345. You can also visit the Jabberwocky bookstore on Caroline Street in Downtown Fredericksburg.

Drama’s Hairspray Is A Big Hit; Earns More Than $20,000

Kristen Steele Reporter

If you didn’t have the chance to catch the Forge Drama’s production of Hairspray on the 19, 20, or 21 of May, you definitely missed out. The show, which was produced due to the collaboration of the band, chorus, and drama departments, was not only widely successful in terms of attendance but was also a fantastic show. The show sold out on the Friday and Saturday night showings, and was a fantastic musical and drama performance from both the cast and orchestra. The production was a little more than two hours long, and there was not a moment

where I, or the rest of the audience for that matter, was bored. The bright and vivid sets, wonderful musical numbers, and underlying humor in the dialogue kept my attention for the

production’s entirety. There was always something going on on the stage, and, to be honest, I was sad when the play was over. The vocal performances were also flawless, and the audience

5K For The Forge Fighters Hannah Somers Reporter

On an early Saturday morning, when most teenagers were taking the opportunity to sleep in after a long week of school, the two seniors -- both of which are involved in the National Honor Society -- were busy setting up a registration table on the outskirts of the H.H. Poole fields. Seniors Shannon Strong and Dennis “D.J.” Haskin hosted a group 5K at H.H. Poole Middle School on May 7th in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The runners trickled in and began stretching for their 3.1 mile run. The outand-back course consisted of a loop through the trails in the woods and ended with a hill that worked to test the participant’s commitment to the cause. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based organization relying on donations to, as their slogan states, save lives “by helping people stay well, get well, find cures, & fight back.”

Participation in the event facilitated more support for such a worthy cause. Shannon Strong, one of the organizers of the event, said the choice to host a 5K race was fairly commonplace because both she and D.J. “ran cross country so 5Ks are pretty familiar.” With only a five dollar registration fee, the race was able to raise $110 for the forge fighters team, a large sum that will greatly benefit the American Cancer Society. As Shannon very well

erupted into applause at the ending notes of Motormouth Maybelle’s song “I Know Where I’ve Been” which was performed by Vivian Barnes (‘12). Aside from that song, the rest of the musical numbers were performed without flaw. Everything from the great stage lighting to the creative and quirky costumes was beautifully done. The microphones used by the principal roles would sometimes stop working in the middle of a musical number, but I applaud the actors for singing and dancing even when they could not be heard by the audience. Although the cast came

put it “any contribution counts,” and this rings true when it comes to volunteer organized events like the 5K. By getting involved with school organizations like the National Honor Society or even Learn and Serve (another organization Dennis “D.J.” is involved in) students can easily benefit their community and strive to make our world a better place.

from both the drama and chorus departments, they all sang, danced, and acted like they had been performing together for years. The cast was quite large, consisting of almost sixty dancers and singers, would all be on the stage at one time for some dance numbers, and they would all stay together for the most part. I can’t even imagine the time and effort it took the choreographers to make every single dance number, and to incorporate 30+ people is even more unfathomable. All of the principal roles that had microphones could also sing, and beautifully at that, which was very impressive

considering it is hard to come by great dancers, singers, and actors at the high school level. The audience could sometimes tell who was a chorus kid and who was a drama kid, but only if you were looking for the differences. Over all, the show was wonderfully done, and I applaud all of the cast, crew, musicians, and directors that were involved in the show. Not only did the show sell out three of the four showings, but the show did not disappoint. I congratulate all that were involved in the show a job well done!

The 3D Glee Movie: Is it Worth it?

NAY Megan Niewold Reporter

When they say that ignorance is bliss, they are correct. When I found out that Glee was making a movie, my jaw dropped; when I found out it was going to be in 3D, I cried. Okay I didn’t actually cry, but this is almost as bad as the Justin Bieber 3D movie. Oh wait, that’s where the producers for Glee got the idea. My most sincere apologies to all of you “Gleeks,” but I have no idea why anyone would go see this movie. Glee is barely tolerable as a TV show, but it is pretty popular so I can’t really say that no one likes it - because they do. But I can say that turning their tour into a

3D movie is pure insanity. These rising stars are not famous singers, and they are certainly not famous enough to be making a movie about themselves. Now, I would like to apologize for all of the previously ignorant souls who have read this article, because now you know that Glee is making a 3D movie. I wish the Glee cast would apologize to me for making my ears hurt whenever they sing, but they won’t. I do not encourage anyone to partake in seeing the movie, because no matter what the critics say, it cannot possibly be worth $10.

VS.

YAY Stephanie DeVaux Opinion Editor

Yes, you heard correctly. Glee is going 3D; and it’s going to be awesome. When you take a look at the film industry today, it was bound to happen sometime. After Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber released movies featuring their own concert tours, the next logical move was to let Glee step up to the plate and do the same. And here they are, bat in hand, ready for a home-run. Personally, I’m psyched. Glee stars like Lea Michele and Cory Monteith have beautiful voices and deserve to be showcased on the big screen. The movie will feature footage and special behind-the-scenes moments from their summer concerts, and I expect nothing less than a pastiche of hilarious

ridicules and good-humored fun. The television show, which airs on FOX, is currently the only indication of how the movie will be. When you sit back one Tuesday night and watch the cast of Glee live, laugh, and sing together, it’s clear how much of a family they are. That kind of chemistry is what will make the upcoming movie a true success. I’m so excited for the movie. My family and I even bought tickets to go see Glee in concert this June. Clearly, I’m ready for Glee in 3D. And hey, if it really is footage from their summer concerts, maybe you will even be able to catch a glimpse of me when they tour in DC.

Through the Eyes of Orlando Sony Makes Up for Lost Network With Free Games Joe Vargo Reporter

Stephanie DeVaux Opinion Editor

Silence falls upon the audience, the curtains are drawn back, and Gary Sharp steps onto the familiar stage of Colonial Forge High School. As his eyes adjust to the bright spotlight shining down on him, he begins to make out the faint silhouettes that compose the audience. The high school production of As You Like It has converged into this single moment, and his heart is racing as he begins to recite the opening monologue. “As I remember, Adam, it was upon this fashion, — bequeathed me by will but poor a thousand crowns, and, as thou say’st, charged my brother, on his blessing, to breed me well: and there begins my sadness.” Junior Gary Sharp, as the male lead in the Forge reproduction of As You Like It, fully embraced the role of Orlando. Yet while many actors try to make the connections between their own lives and those of their fictitious counterparts, Gary chooses to take a different approach. “I take each new role as a challenge to become a completely different person and therefore try to avoid identifying the similarities between myself and my character,” says Sharp. For two months, the cast spent their time memorizing their lines and perfecting their every move. Yet amidst the many practices and dress rehearsals, the biggest moment is always on stage the night of the play’s premiere. For Gary, May 6th was that night, and as he stepped into the spotlight as Orlando, he reaped all the benefits that came from

endless hours of rehearsal. “When all the hard work pays off and you finally get on the stage, it is the most fulfilling feeling in the world,” he explains. But the hard work isn’t over once you step out onto stage. As the cast transitions from one act to the next, Gary explains that the hardest part is staying in character while the other cast members are reciting their lines. “It is simple to act out your own lines, but being able to accurately react to other people’s lines makes someone a truly talented actor,” he says. Still, from the moment the cast slips into their costumes to the ritualistic post-play trip to IHOP, a single moment sticks out for Gary Sharp. The young actor shares how his favorite part of the night is the pre-play warm-up speech. Sharp says, “I always enjoy leading a cheer to raise the energy level of the cast and get them prepared for the upcoming performance. It is a very good bonding time for the cast and provides me an opportunity to showcase my inspirational speaking ability.” As the final line was spoken, the lights dimmed and the audience erupted into applause. When Gary Sharp stepped back out onto the stage for a final bow, he had given everything he had into that performance. And as he drank in the praise of the audience, one thing was certain; the memories he had made as Orlando would be with him forever.

In today’s day and age we rely so heavily on the Internet and online connection for our information and entertainment. So what happens when a huge company’s online server goes offline for weeks? Sony’s Playstation Network(PSN) has been down since April 20th. Originally Sony’s servers went down for “maintenance” but then Sony was forced to shut down their servers when their security was breached. A statement was released almost a week after the attack stating that

Sammi Says: My boyfriend and I have been spending a lot of time together, but it takes me away from my friends. How should I balance girl time and guy time? Unbalanced09 Advice: If your friends aren’t complaining, just keep doing what you’re doing. You’re friends eventually have to realize that in high school, making a real relationship is going to be top priority to some girls. However, if they are getting offended by it, talk to your boyfriend. Let him know that you guys don’t necessarily have to spend every waking hour together, and that some time can be allotted to your friends. That way, your friends can still stay close to you, but you and your boyfriend can still have time together as well. No friend will take it personally; it’s just the way high school brains work sometimes. I really like this guy, but he has a girlfriend. The way he acts makes me think that he is interested in me, but I’m not sure how to get around the girlfriend thing. What should I do? Confused4294 Advice: Don’t cross those lines. In high school, teenage guys want the best of both worlds. Although he may actually have feelings for you, there is probably a ten percent chance he will

the hackers had access to PSN accounts which include names, addresses, and credit card information. Weeks later Sony Online Entertainment(SOE) was also attacked and brought down. The identity of the hacker or hackers is still unknown. Hackers like Anonymous and GeoHot have been named but both have denied the accusations to the attack, but Anonymous has made anti-Sony statements And while it seems this is all the hacker fault, Sony is taking the blame.

Sony knew that their network had weaknesses and that it could actually be hacked. Sony also admitted that the hackers did have access to information such as birthdays, addresses, names and credit card information. Although the credit card numbers were encrypted, that doesn’t protect them completely from the hackers. In addition, Sony left their customers in the dark by failing to notify PlayStation users until a week after the severs went down that they were indeed hacked. Sony recently apologized

for the inconveniences and promised to gift users free down-loadable games and a free month of their premium service when the servers are finally restored. Online multi-player functions have been back since Sunday the 15th and the PS store and other online services will be back before the end of the month. The free downloadable games include popular titles like Infamous and Little Big Planet.

Want Advice? See What Sammi Says break up with his girlfriend for you. I hate to break it to you, but that’s just the way it is. Thus, I wouldn’t waste your time. He may be a great guy in your eyes, but still looking at him like that while he’s taken will just twist the tables and make the both of you look bad, not to mention, start some major drama with the girlfriend. There are so many guys out there, don’t waste your emotions on one that will never work out. I have a crush on this lacrosse player here at Forge. He’s tall, with brown hair, and pretty eyes, and when we’re hanging out he’s the sweetest boy. Except whenever I go to his games he always ignores me and just hangs with his “bros” as he puts it. It’s like his inner “lax bro” takes over, I don’t know if I should tell him this bothers me or not. What do you think? Brosgirl#21 Advice: Guys have an obscure way of acting. It’s like they become all mushy gushy when they’re alone with their girlfriend, but when they’re friends are around they feel as if they can do better: that’s just the way they are, it won’t change. Every guy doesn’t want to seem like the nicest, sweetest boy because they just think all the “bros” will look at him as soft or not manly. The best way to go

about this would be probably to call him out on it. Don’t particularly have a sit down talk with him, but when you see him after his games go up to him and say something that will show to his boys that he actually cares. The main reason he won’t show that to you is probably because he doesn’t know how his friends will react: so you need to be the one to test the waters. Almost 99 % of the time his “bros” will just cheer him on. My parents keep saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” but life gave me lemons and I don’t know how to make the lemonade. I just got hired at a new job for the summer and I’m going to be a lifeguard, but my friends are all going on this great summer trip and invited me. Going on the trip would mean me quitting my job; I know the responsible decision would be to not go on the trip, but I’m not sure I want to be responsible. How do I handle this? BeachBummer Advice: The moral of the story is: real life isn’t exactly going on great trips with your friends. Reality means working, earning money. Having a summer job will benefit you in far more ways than going on the trip with your friends will. By staying at your job, you will be

earning enough money to possibly grant you with the ability to plan another trip, one you can attend. The job will teach you responsibility and management, two important aspects that you must already have going into your future outside of high school. You will have many different opportunities to go on trips with your friends, but for now: be responsible. I’m planning to be gone all summer, so I’m not going to have a lot of time for my friends and family. Before I leave, I want to have one last memory that will stay with me until I get back home. What’s the best way to make this happen? LastMemory12 Advice: There isn’t a better memory other than having everyone you’ll miss in the same place before you leave. Have a friend or your parents plan a going away party where all your friends and family are able to attend. Make sure you set up tons of games, opportunities for pictures, and have everyone bring a little something for you to take on your trip so you always have a piece of home. It may not be the craziest memory, but it is something that will last you all summer and know that your friends and family will be missing you.

7 Fast Five Brings New Life to Franchise

Manuel Lemus Reporter

Fast Five, which hit theaters in April 29, 2011, is the fifth installment in the Fast & Furious series and the fourth movie in the chronological series. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are back to their reprising roles as Dom Toretto and Brain O’Conner. Also starring in the film is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who plays

M L PA

a bounty hunter turned US Marshall named Luke Hobbs. Two other actors to reappear in this film is Ludacris, who was in 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Tyrese Gibson, who also was in 2 Fast 2 Furious. Other actors to return from past series are Tego Calderon, Don Omar, & Sung Kang. The franchise moved in

a new direction in this film, in the past it was all about street racing. But now the franchise has turned Fast Five into a heist action movie now moving away from cars and car culture. The change of direction was praised my film critics making Fast Five the highest rated film in the franchise. I agree the film had everything a good action movie requires. One of the key elements is action, which the film surely provides, suspense, this movie leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting to see if the hero survives or not. Another element used in this movie was comedy, something I really did not expect. There were some good jokes here and there to lighten up the mood and it wasn’t used too much to make the movie seem cheesy. Dwayne Johnson Vs Vin Diesel...who will win this epic battle. The fight scene was too good. Seeing these two actors together in a film was just great. Critics also praised Johnson’s involvement in the movie. He just being in the movie gave it an extra boost of testosterone. As I said the movie was pure action and I highly recommend you all to check it out.

Mortal Kombat Embraces Dubstep as Fresh Soundtrack to Classic Series

Chris Hawks Reporter

Successful companies are always looking for ways to improve their products. NetherRealm Studios, developers for Midway’s most arguably popular game, Mortal Kombat, are constantly striving for any new ideas to allow their game to be graphically enhanced and more player friendly. From player feedback and game reviews the same suggestion came up, music. Looking for music that was similar to the original Mortal Kombat

soundtrack seemed difficult for the Midway developers. Problems that arose were things such as they didn’t want the new music to overpower the actual game play, or be too weak for an action packed game such as Mortal Kombat. Finally they came across dubstep, a heavy bass lined music with electronic clips and beats. Wanting to keep the music with a Mortal Kombat like theme, dubstep artists were hired specifically for the making of Mortal Kombat

9. One of the dubstep artists was Skrillex. Skrillex was assigned with producing a theme for Reptile, which pulled off with amazing success and set a new milestone for dubstep producers everywhere. With Mortal Kombat sales reaching third most sold games of the year in 11 days and great reviews, it’s safe to say the makers of Mortal Kombat made a solid improvement to their game.

Dear Editor in Chief, It’s my first year officially being on the Talon staff, and I must say I absolutely loved it. Every 1st block on Y days, you greeted everyone with a smile. There were some days when you got annoyed with people, and I completely wanted to stay out of your way. But other than that, you made my life on the Talon staff a little bit easier. I just wanted to say, you were a GREAT Editor in Chief, and you will be missed. Your devotion to the newspaper is inspiring. You have taught me so much and you are a great leader for us. You’re someone who we can look up to, and definitely someone who we will always remember and go to when in the need of help or for an opinion of things. Your genuine personality makes having you as our boss a lot easier and that you actually care about the newspaper, and instead of being the kind of leader that is just there for the name you proved your role and did a great job at it. You will be missed in so many ways and the newspaper won’t be the same without you next year, but we will work hard to make the year great. Thank you for the parties and everything you do for us. Though it didn’t always seem like we appreciated it, we did. Lauren, you’re the kind of person every newspaper staff needs on their team. You always pushed us to do our best and strive for higher achievements. You have left a permanent mark on the Talon. It’s no secret you will be missed by the staff and Mr.Snead. I know you’re going to take the journalism world by storm. I hope one day I will read a fantastic article in the newspaper or even a magazine and see your name next to it. Sincerely, Leekeisha Stover, Kayla Boyer, Kyra Youngblood, Allie Cox, and Ally Hottle

My favorite memory was actually my freshman year. As soon as I walked in I was like, ‘Wow I’m a man’. I don’t know why but I just kept thinking I was one step closer to becoming an adult.

Shaquil Hickman

Spirit Week had to be the best memory. There’s always that one person that doesn’t want to do it but the majority of the school does it and goes full out. And it became much more fun when the person that you never thought would do anything went out of their way to top everybody. The funniest!

Nadia Blackman

My favorite memory is either when I put a squid in Kyle Doeschers locker, asked a girl out over the morning announcements or danced on the lunch table in the middle of my lunch block.

Students Travel Long Distances in Summer Trips

Ciao, Benvenuti in Italia: Hello welcome to Italy Traveling with your parents, is a world away from taking a plane ride with four layovers to Italy alone. With her Sudoku book in hand, Haley Grubbs (’13), is visiting Venice, Italy this summer for the second time; and she is going solo. “I’m visiting my sister, who I only get to see once a year” Grubbs explains, while talking about her trip, “It sounds cheesy but seeing my sister is my favorite part about Italy.” The flight there is long, with four layovers and nineteen hours, but the trip is worth it. Haley is leaving in July and coming home to Stafford, Virginia in August; which makes packing even more difficult. “I’m packing for months, clothes wise,” she says, “but I borrow a lot of my sisters clothes, because the Italians would look at you weird if you showed up wearing skinny jeans and a tank top.” Everyone has something they can’t live without: their cellphone, their computer, even a favorite stuffed animal. Different from the rest Haley Grubbs clearly stated, “well I can’t live without food, so I’m going to pack lots of Oreo’s and Peanut butter, since they don’t have it there.” Experiencing the Italian culture firsthand is a great way to become educated in other cultures, including the languages. Since she has been to Italy once before, Grubbs is not worried about the language barrier. “I speak Italian, and since Venice is a small town I can even talk to the DJ in the club,” she says. “I’m going by myself, just for fun, and my parents are paying,” Grubbs explains. She is lucky to be able to experience such an incredible trip, and although she will be gone for a month the trip in itself is worth missing her family back home. It’s the chance of a lifetime for Haley and she’s taking her chance.

¡Hola, bienvenidos a Colombia!

Hallo Willkommen in Deutschland

The smell of fresh coffee is ever-present and the Spanish language flows from the tongue of the Colombian people. This summer, Alexys Nealis (‘12) will spend almost a month in the beautiful country of Colombia with her grandfather. Although the trip will be fun, Alexys says that she has some educational reasons for going as well. “I want to see the culture because it’s my ethnicity and I also think it will help me with my Spanish,” says Alexys. As a Spanish IV student, Alexys knows the basics, but she’s hoping that being surrounded by Spanish-speaking people will help her to become more fluent. While on her trip, Alexys will visit many cities within the country, including Bogota, Mani, and Cartagena. One of her most noted excursions is to the coffee region of the country where most of the coffee is produced.

After March’s earthquakes devastated Japan, Stephanie DeVaux’s plans changed. With a suit case filled with clothes and devoid of her cell phone, Stephanie DeVaux will board a plane headed for Germany in late June. “Even though I was excited to go to Japan, after all the tragic events that occurred over there, I realized that Germany is a better option; I’m really looking forward to going there,” said DeVaux. Unlike a private trip to Germany, DeVaux’s came at no cost to her. “My trip is sponsored by an organization called Youth for Understanding. I applied for a scholarship--and go it--so the trip costs me nothing.” said DeVaux. DeVaux is definitely taking this trip lightly. “I have a ‘How to Speak German for Dummies’ book. I take Spanish in school, so that’s the only practice I get,” said DeVaux. Luckily for her, though, students in Germany are required to learn two languages--and most choose English as their second language. “I’m really looking forward to my trip. Germany seems like a great place and I’m excited to get to know their culture,” said DeVaux. If all goes as planned, DeVaux will be back on American soil by early August. After spending nearly two months in Germany, it’s no doubt she will return with a new love for schnitzel, and, who knows, maybe even her own pair of lederhosen.

Because she is going to a different country, Alexys cannot use her cellphone. However, there is one thing she cannot live without. “I cannot live without my computer. I need it to keep in touch with my family.” Alexys is looking forward to her trip to Colombia and expects it to be the highlight of her summer.

Summer Fashion Bringing Back Classic Styles Donovan Moore Reporter

Fashion magazines have released their expected looks and expectations for summer 2011. Magazines such as Teen Vogue, Nylon Girls and Guys, Marie Claire, Elle, and Cosmopolitan have many fashion lovers excited to put together certain looks and also create their own. “I would have my hair in a curly fro with a bow, pearl earrings, crop tee with cut off sleeves, high waist shorts with a nice belt, and a nice

pair of Indian boots”, said Beau Bouie (’12). W When it comes to clothing and fashion, most people like to stick to what they see others wearing, but there are some who believe in going outside the box. According to Teen Vogue magazine, popular summer trends for girls will be: animal print accessories, lace up flats, floral patterns, long skirts, and crazy nail art. According to Nylon Guys, popular summer trends for

guys will be: solid v-neck t shirts, cargo shorts, graphic t’s, snap backs, and canvas shoes i.e.- Tom’s or Vans. Mia Cox (’12) said, “For males shorts and v-necks will be most popular and for girls maxi dresses, high waist shorts, and cropped and tube tops”. If you’re looking for places that will create this look or places you’re looking to shop at, stores to check out are: Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Forever

21, H&M, Polo Ralph Lauren, Pac Sun, JCPenny, J. Crew, and Nordstrom. If you’re looking for other places to shop for a more vintage look places to check out are online stores such as Topshop, Topman USA, and Modcloth; and for stores thrift stores are most popular. Senior Margaret Howe said, “You might be surprised what you find at thrift stores, many times I’ve found designer things such as Polo that have been for a very low price”.

Whether you’re looking to dress to impress or simply to dress for

comfort, there are plenty of both stores and online stores that can help you.

The Talon’s Teacher of the Month: Mrs. Csikari Leekeisha Stover Reporter

Q: What grade are you in? A: 12th

Q: How do you feel about this year’s senior class? A: Lets just say: I have enjoyed my senior officers.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy? A: Hockey, learning about my ancestry, and photography Q: What is it like to have a twin? A: It’s normal for me. People always ask me this question and I honestly never have a good answer to give them.

Q: What made you chose to be in charge of the seniors? A: A series of poor choices. Q: This year, what have you done for the Class of ’11? A: Nothing, I make my officers do everything.

Q: If you were given the choice to dress as a celebrity female for a million dollars, would you do it and which celebrity woman would you be? A: Yes. Lady GaGa because if I’m going to make a fool of myself, I’m going to go hardcore.

Q: Have you done anything differently? A: We always build upon the past but leave room for innovative ideas.

Q: What profession would you want to have when you’re older? A: I really have no clue. Either a photographer, historian, or a history teacher.

Q: If so, What? And why? A: T-shirts, Memento, and Lanyards Q: What has been your favorite senior class? And why? A: This is my first year not having a lot of seniors as students so, I can’t pick the class of 2011. I loved last year’s students. They gave a 100% until they walked out my doors.

The Talon’s Student of the Month: Christopher “Buddy” Volland

Q: Being in charge of the senior class, what was your biggest challenge this year? A: Same as always, trying to figure out where the seniors are throughout the day, Its not easy tracking down 500 seniors.

Q: What’s one thing you’ll miss about this senior class? And why? A: I’m not going to lie. I’m not going to miss them. The ones that I would miss will keep in contact and the others are moving on to bigger and better things.

Q: If you could have one supernatural power, what would it be and what would you do with it? A: The power of invisibility. Original, I know. I would get out of awkward situations and be able to spy on people. Q: What is one phrase that you couldn’t live without and what does it mean to you? A: “Morphinominal” from the original Mighty Morphin Power

Rangers. When I was little, I was obsessed with the Power Rangers (especially the pink ranger.) My dad would always jokingly say it.

Q: What one food could you live off of for the rest of your life? A: A salad from Ruby Tuesdays. Their croutons are the best.

Q: If your friends had to describe you in three words, what would they be and why? A: Nice, helpful, and funny because I try to be a good friend... most of the time.

Q: You’re a senior. What are your plans after graduation? A: I”ll probably begin going to Germana in the spring. Until then, I’ll probably be working

If you take a girl mini-golfing during the summer not only is it a wonderful and cheap date; the majority of girls stink at mini-golf. Actually, the majority of people aren’t very good at it. You can pull the classic golf move of “let me show you how to do it” and you can both hold the putter! It may be old, but if your date is a sweetheart then the move is guaranteed to be affective.

When I say these two things never fail, I mean it. All you have to do is casually pick up your date, drive into downtown Fredericksburg and walk to Carl’s. If you’re comfortable talking with your date then the walk there shouldn’t be a problem. When you get there, grab a cone, or a shake for two and relish the fact that Carl’s is the best Ice Cream in town.

If you’re up for an all day affair then take a trip with your significant other or a group of flirty friends to Kings Dominion or Busch Gardens. It’s basically a win, win, and win situation. Everyone is happy all day, the coasters sit two people so if someone gets scared there’s an arm to hold, and if you go to the water park you’ve got waterslides and wave pools to entertain you in your swimsuits. The tickets can be a little expensive, but hey, that’s what season passes are for, right?

Riding a bike sure beats riding a school bus, thankfully schools out though. Going bike riding or canoeing for a date seems really…active. That’s a good thing! Occasionally it really is fun to bike or canoe with someone you like, you can stop for water breaks and hangout someplace cool or tip the other persons canoe. It’s flirty, fun, and active; don’t spend your summer lazing around- you’ll get bored of each other.

Visiting the Zoo is such a cute date, girls and guys love it. It’s one of those places that no one takes you anymore since you turned 13, so it’s a nice change of pace. Walking around laughing at all the silly animals is a great way to spend a day, plus you’ll probably have a million inside jokes by the time it’s over. Bonus: a ticket to the zoo is way cheap! The majority of us haven’t been to the Baltimore Aquarium since we took our 3 grade field trip there. Wouldn’t it be an awesome surprise to spend a day looking through glass at pretty fish and maybe even touching a manta ray? Why yes, yes it would be.

FCCLA Wins States and Heads to Nationals in Anaheim, California Liza Contreras Reporter

Forge’s FCCLA went to Virginia beach the weekend of April 30th through May 1st for their FCCLA chapter competition. One member received a gold medal, and eight members received the silver medal. “They all did a really good job,” said Advisor Mrs. Lewis. Four of the girls, Daneika and

Daneisha Beaver (‘14), Elizabeth Puckerin (‘14), and Lauren Evans (‘13), will be going to the National Competition held in Anaheim, California over the summer, July 9th through the 15th. “We basically take a problem related to the environment and come up with a solution to help the environment,”

said Daneika. Both Beaver sisters and Puckerin will be competing in the environmental ambassador competition while Evans will be competing in the recycling and redesign competition. As an environmental ambassadors they came up with a thirtyfive page solution to reduce carbon footprint, where you bring down carbon

dioxide, through efficient use of energy by unplugging chargers and plugs. “At the state competition I competed in the hospitality, tourism, and recreation category,” said Dominique Williams (‘13). Williams won 2nd place silver award for her competition. Williams had to put together a forty-five paper binder about planning

a wedding with helpful tips from wedding planners and visits to men and women’s shops, like Men’s Wearhouse and David’s Bridal, for different attire price ranges. “States was so much fun but we had to be up at 8:00 am so most of us girls got up around 5 to 6 am because we there was four girls to each room and we didn’t get to bed until about

11 to 12pm,” said Beaver. The National competition is the last competition for the year. The girls have been preparing for the competition by fixing their binders based on the judge’s criteria by adding more details and expanding their speeches.

New Adele Album, 21, Is A Welcome Departure from Recent Pop Music Trends Naoko Branker Reporter

Having a different feel from her previous album, Adele’s new CD, 21, is an escape from the more recent pop albums that have come out. The 22-year old singer has been compared to Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, and her sophomore piece of work is just as good, if not better than her debut album, 19. This album has a more gospel and blues feel to it and her smoky voice accents the instrumentals nicely. In her single Rolling in the Deep, the song has an

edgy tone to it that makes it tell a story about a girl and the story of her breakup. The vocals along with the powerful piano and drums and back up vocals make this song have a purpose to it. In contrast to the swingblues style of Rolling in the Deep, Don’t You Remember lets Adele show her softer side with powerful lyrics, But don’t you remember? Don’t you remember? The reason you loved me before, Baby, please remember me once more. While her

voice is just as strong in this song as the others on the album, the message has a more emotional tone to it. She sings the song with such conviction that you can hear through the words and see straight through her. This album has given Adele a chance to do something different with the Pop genre and she made a wise choice in taking a leap with this collection of songs.

Mr. Onorato describes his days at Forge in two words: “Very challenging.” “Every day is different, every student is different, and every year is different,” he said. Every morning when he walks into Colonial Forge Mr. Onorato enters grades and then checks his mail. “Most teachers check their mail first, but I enter grades.” he said. Everyone has their most embarrassing moment and it can feel ten times worse when you’re surrounded by twenty-one hundred students or teaching a class. “My most embarrassing moment was the day a student asked me to go in the hallway to tell me that my fly was open,” Mr. Onorato said. Mr. Onorato loves teaching at Forge even

though when he was younger he never thought that it was a possibility. “When I was younger I never thought it was possible to become a teacher because I had a stutter.” He did however grow out of it and entered the Marines where he worked until he believed that he could be a teacher. If you’re looking for Mr. Onorato you can usually find him in his classroom, but only on Y days while he is here. You can also find him as the faculty sponsor for the Leo Club, where they work on community service projects, hold the Relay for Life, and help people when they need it. If someone didn’t know who he was and looking for him, how would you describe him? “[I’m known as] The Yankees fan, everybody

knows about it” said Mr. Onorato. Everyone has bad days and doesn’t really want to be at school, but Mr. Onorato’s worst day didn’t happen at Forge. “No day here [at Forge] has been worse than the day that I was teaching in Prince William on September 11, 2001.” said Mr. Onorato. Mr. Onorato says he has an animated teaching style. “I’m Italian and I use my hands a lot, my students would agree with me” he said. If he could have one super power as a teacher Mr. Onarato would choose to be able to make his students care about Earth Science as much as he does. “I definitely would not want to be able to read their minds” he said. Science, students, and school are the three S’s that Mr. Onorato sees everyday at Colonial Forge.

How to Stay Fit This Summer

Sports May 27, 2011

Tarah Portland Entertainment Editor

Summer. The word itself holds promises of sun, waves, sand, friends, and fun. But it’s also a time to ask yourself, am I ready to spend every day in a bathing suit? As the days until summer dwindle, many of us are frantically trying to get in shape so we can be comfortable each and every day in a bathing suit. But luckily, the frantic days can come to a standstill, for you are about to have the most appropriate guideline to get ready to show off that summer bod.

Get fresh air

Join a Gym

If joining a gym is out of the question, don’t hesitate to spend your time outside. Running on a trail, around your neighborhood, or even up and down your driveway will give you varied elevations, a better view, and more effective workouts. Even if you don’t exactly go on a run, but just a walk, pass a soccer ball or football, or spend your time reading on the porch, you will still be receiving better amounts of air than the indoors offers you.

Usually, the first step to getting the motivation to work out is to have to constantly stare at that gym membership in your wallet. It’s inexpensive, beneficial, and more fun than you think. Get a couple of your friends to join you, and spend at least an hour to two hours a day running the treadmill, lifting weights, leg presses, or even something relaxing, such as yoga. Whatever you do, it will still burn more calories than sleeping in until noon and spending your day later and lazier.

eat right! Now, before you get too scared… I’m not advising you to go on a diet. Personally, diets are impossible. Instead, what is really recommended is to eat a total of six small meals a day: breakfast, a snack, lunch, snack number two, dinner, and snack number three. This is also strongly recommended by Livestrong.com, the website for Lance Armstrong’s foundation. For breakfast he shows that a high-fiber cereals, fruits, vegetables, eggs, and low-fat milk can keep your body’s “energy levels elevated and keep you satisfied until your next meal.” Also, having yogurts, nuts, and oatmeal are also highly favored. If looking for something fast, a smoothie with natural fruits will give you a good combination of energy levels as well. Going along with the fiber intake, add sides of either fruits or vegetables to any lunch item. Lunch should include a type of protein (chicken, tuna, turkey), on top of or with some greens such as a salad, peas, or beans addition to a low-fat dressing. Usually, dinner is something that can vary the most. Mostly favored is “a balance between healthy fats, lean proteins and complex carbohydrates.” Ideas are a type of red meat or other protein, vegetables (typically a salad, broccoli, or green beans), and a type of carbohydrate such as potatoes, rice, or whole wheat pasta. All of these items can be accompanied by different herbs and spices to add flavor, variety, and keep the healthy meal balanced. In between each of these meals should be three snacks all composed of fruits, vegetables, or whole grains. These small snacks will give a good way to keep your metabolism up, ultimately lowering the intake of calories and effectively burning fat. The idea of eating six small meals a day always keeps you up and running and full of energy where there’s no time to crash.

New Teams Show Promise During Fall Sports Conditioning Kathleen Namey News Editor

All of the fall sport teams at Colonial Forge have a large break between the end of the school year and the beginning of their season. They have all of summer break to condition and prepare for the season. Many of the teams have organized conditioning and captain practices that bring the teams together to hopefully give them an extra boost during their season. The question is, how do these teams do this without breaking VHSL rules? The main rule being that you cannot be coached in the off season.

One of biggest sports teams at Colonial Forge is the football team. In the off season they participate in the passing league that has many other teams from the county playing as well. Forge has two teams participating with a mix of “skills players”. Lem Howard (‘12) said, “The skills players the ones who are the wide receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks. Not the linemen.” He said that they have their coaches there, but they only give pointers and tips. “It really helps us prepare for

the upcoming season; it brings us together.” Along with this, they hit the weight room to bulk up for the 2011 season. Another fall sport that has a very rigorous off season conditioning is Volleyball. Ashleigh Glassie (‘12) has been on the team all 3 years of her high school career. She says, “Starting right before spring sports, we start conditioning. There we pretty much just weight lift and run.” The conditioning is twice a week to make sure that they are in shape and strong for the upcoming

season. To prepare for the new season, they have open gyms. There coach is there to advise and make sure everything goes smoothly, but “doesn’t really coach us, sometimes he’ll give us tips at the most”. Along with Volleyball, the Field Hockey team also has tough conditioning and coachless practices as well. Every Tuesday and Thursday starting in January, the Field Hockey team has been hard at work. Marissa McCormick (‘12) says, “It is hard. Coach Curtin and Coach Spinelli give

us workout booklets to guide us through the weight room. Then we go out to run.” On a regular basis they will weight lift, run, and then start to play. Lauren Reinaman (‘12) says, “When we start to play, Coach Curtin doesn’t coach us. He will set up the drill and then sit down and let us do it.” Along with conditioning they also participate in spring tournaments and team camp during the summer. “We have tournaments at Lynchburg and Longwood where we usually get a lot of returning players

to play and a parent to coach. It brings us together during the off season” said Reinaman. “Team camp is really helpful. It reminds us that the season is really close and we learn new tactics that will help us as a team during the season.” The Colonial Forge fall sports team are very good about following VHSL rules. They know how to avoid getting in trouble and know how to bring their teams together in the off season. All of their conditioning and playing will pay off when the season comes up in August.

Sports It’s a Girl Thing: Girls Varsity Basketball Recap The Talon

The true definition of a Lady Eagle is one who struggles to win for not only herself but her team. This year, every player went above and beyond to complete personal and team goals. Although the girl’s varsity basketball team had many obstacles to overcome, they worked hard to revolutionize the program. “Our biggest improvement to our team was chemistry, because we had the chemistry possibly in our District, together we were able to achieve a successful season,” said Reyunna Henderson. The girls have had an extremely successful season, earned a combination of titles as a team and individually and surpassed last year’s teams accomplishments. Motivation, dedication, teamwork, and determination were key skills that they, as a team, had to learn and have. From the day of their first scrimmage, the Coaches already knew that the team had a lot of work to do. Having a team of no height, the girls faced practices from fall season to regular season that consisted of running drills shooting drills and scrimmages. “Every practice we had to run basically all practice long mainly because the

whole team was practically midgets,” said Junior Tanaysa Henderson. Since the girls could not provide size, then they would have to be fast and with the hustle and consistent shooters per game, the girls beat out top teams in their district and became one of the top free throw shooting teams in the

district. Claiming their first Virginia AAA Commonwealth District regular season girls’ basketball title and banner was a major accomplishment that the team had wanted to do all year long. “Winning the banner was awesome because when we lost the game against Stafford the

Junior David Pennesi, Track Success Jeremy Granderson Reporter

Junior David Pennesi has been a part of the Colonial Forge Cross Country, Outdoor Track and Field, and Indoor Track and Field teams since his freshman year. Every year he works hard to increase his skill and medal count. Throughout his three years at Colonial Forge, he has worked hard to be at the level he is now as one of the best distance runners in our area. Pennesi currently holds the record in the two mile and the mile, and is also part of the nationally ranked four-by-eight hundred team. Being a junior, he

continues to work hard to achieve even higher goals as we head into the regional and state competitions. In the current outdoor season, David Pennesi has helped his team become one of the best track and field teams in the state. Recently the Colonial Forge boys Track and Field team won their first district title since thier coaches won it in 2003. At the district meet David Pennesi placed first in the mile, first in the eight hundred, and helped the boys team place first in the four-by-eight hundred meter relay.

David Pennesi and the rest of the boys team will set off to hopefully win their second Regional Championship and become a threat at the Virginia state Track and Field competitiion. David Pennesi is projected to be a notable threat in both meets and will work hard to help his team win both.

When they made it farther than just a banner, but regional’s the girls made it farther than any other team and even the guys this year. In addition to their District Title, because of their hard

work this year, Coach Darley was recognized as Coach of the Year. Even though they’d accomplished so much during their regular season, getting the opportunity to make it to regional’s became their overall achievement. The girls had to mentally prepare themselves to play

in games against the top teams in the region. Coach Darley prepared herself and the team by trying to develop the mindset to go in ready to stop them slows them down, and with speed and faith she was sure her team would get the win. In their most challenging game, against one of the state’s top teams, Stonewall Jackson, Forge took on an eight-point firstquarter lead in the Northwest Region semifinal. After their opponents came back with a lead by the end of the first quarter, Forge struggled to stay in the game ending their season for good.” The last game against Stonewall was the game I’d ever played in, it was exciting and intense, no one gave up and we fought to the very end,” said Senior Rajanee Taylor. Although the team loses two seniors this year, next year’s season is highly anticipated especially because of Coach Darley’s mission at the very beginning of the season, re-creating a younger varsity team with four sophomores and two freshmen. With the amount of talent the younger players have presented not only on the Varsity team but Junior Varsity, there’s nothing that can stop their team from surpassing this year’s team success.
