LETTER TO OUR COMMUNITY

To Our Community, T

The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area (CFHZ) seeks to ensure that our community thrives today, tomorrow and forever by building our Community's Endowment to support high impact charitable projects, helping donors achieve their charitable goals, and leading and partnering in community level initiatives. As we reflect back on the last year with that mission statement in mind, it is clear that you made 2017 a banner year for CFHZ. Together, we completed the largest campaign in CFHZ history, adding $5 million to our Community’s Endowment “Today” while adding 100 new “Tomorrow” (estate) gift commitments that collectively represent more than $30 million in future gifts for our Community’s Endowment. Together, we awarded the largest grant in CFHZ history, a $500,000 commitment to Housing Next to tackle our local housing affordability issue. Together, we contributed a record high $9.7 million in gifts and pledges to CFHZ’s Community’s Endowment and Donor Service Funds.

Together, we distributed more than $5.5 million in grants from our Community’s Endowment and Donor Service Funds. Together, through new gifts and investment returns of 14.7 percent, we crossed the $70 million total asset mark for the first time in CFHZ history. Together, we are ensuring that our community thrives today, tomorrow and forever. This Annual Report provides stories, facts and figures from 2017 as a way for you to learn more about how we achieved these milestones together. With each act of generosity, our collective impact continues to grow and build a vibrant and flourishing Holland/Zeeland area. If you have any questions about the work of CFHZ, or how your generous support is making a difference in our community, please do not hesitate to reach out to either of us.

With gratitude for your continued support,

Mike Goorhouse President/CEO

BUILDING OUR

Community’s Endowment Building our Community’s Endowment ensures that Holland/Zeeland will always have philanthropic resources available to meet future community needs. Our Community’s Endowment is comprised of Unrestricted and Field of Interest Funds. These resources are pooled together to achieve greater impact both now and into the future. CFHZ uses a portion of these funds each year to invest in community change across a broad range of issue areas.

UNRESTRICTED FUNDS Unrestricted Funds give CFHZ flexibility by allowing the Board of Trustees and staff to use their knowledge and expertise in determining which efforts or initiatives would be most impactful for the community. Unrestricted Funds address our community’s most pressing needs and promising opportunities.

Establishing an Unrestricted Fund allows a donor to leave a personal, corporate, or family legacy in the community and know that the CFHZ Board of Trustees and staff will use the resources in the most effective way. CFHZ will always have local staff and board members who possess a broad perspective and knowledge of community issues, while maintaining close connections with the nonprofits seeking to address them. This expertise allows CFHZ to create the greatest impact for the community at the given moment. An Unrestricted Fund provides the resources to make these community investments possible. Donors can choose the name of these funds that are part of our Community’s Endowment.

"We chose to give to the Community Foundation because it’s just so easy for us. There’s no homework on my part, and I don’t have to worry that the money is going to be spent unwisely," — ART TOLSMA

P

People choose to give for many reasons. For TNT Roofing and brothers Art and Mike Tolsma, the biggest reason is their faith.

“Being born and raised as a part of God’s family, it’s part of our belief to give back,” Art said. “Doing so much work in and around the area, giving back locally is a natural fit,” TNT Roofing was started in 1992. It took a while for the two brothers to figure out how to work together, and fortunately for them, the north side of Holland began exploding with new subdivisions soon after, providing Art and Mike with more work than they could handle. “Suddenly we had all this work to do,” Art explained. “So, we thought we’d hire a guy, then we hired another guy, and now, somehow, 26 years and 15 employees later, here we are!” "Often in life, things have a way of working out for the good of everybody if you take hold of the opportunities that God presents," said Art. Around 1998, Art and Mike learned that Habitat for Humanity was struggling to find volunteers that were willing and able to do roofing. TNT made the easy choice to donate labor for this cause.

Today, TNT Roofing is able to donate 100 percent of the labor and materials for the roofing work on Habitat homes. “It’s just a fun and easy way for us to give back,” said Art. Over the years TNT Roofing has been able to give back to the community in one way or another. When a hail storm brought three years’ worth of steady work and pushed up profits, Art sought out guidance from a mentor at church. That friend mentioned CFHZ, and after checking into it, the TNT Unrestricted Fund was established in 2008. “We chose to give to the Community Foundation because it’s just so easy for us,” Art said. “There’s no homework on my part, and I don’t have to worry that the money is going to be spent unwisely.” Art said he was thrilled to be able to be a part of CFHZ’s “Today. Tomorrow. Forever.” campaign. “It’s just awesome!” he said. “How great to be able to be part of a community that’s going to be sustaining itself forever. We’re just so happy to be a part of that.”

TNT Roofing UNRESTRICTED FUND Our community is sure to change, and we need to be ready. The flexibility of unrestricted gifts allows the Foundation to use the expertise of our staff and widely representative board to make the best possible community investments.

FUND TYPES: FIELD OF INTEREST

“The Community Foundation is a good steward of our contributions," — DAVID SCHIPPER

I

If you knew Barbara Schipper, you would know why her family chose to create an early education fund as her legacy with the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.

Barb lived a life full of giving, and she cared deeply about so many different people. Barb died in 2016 at the age of 79. A Field of Interest Fund at the Community Foundation allows for her legacy and vision to carry on beyond her lifetime.

Barb began her career as a third-grade teacher in Olympia, Washington, and throughout her lifetime she gave her time and talent as a volunteer for various nonprofit organizations. She served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, tutored an adult to help her earn a GED, and she volunteered weekly at the Center for Women in Transition.

The vision for the Barbara B. Schipper Early Education Fund is to support local early childhood development and education efforts with a special emphasis on literacy to help at-risk children.

It was the culmination of all these experiences and many others that led her family to create a fund that focuses on early childhood education.

The research supporting the importance of quality early childhood education is endless, and the Holland/Zeeland community is committed to progress in this area. The generosity of Barb and her family has provided

philanthropic resources to support these initiative and programs now and in the future. When we asked her husband, David, why the family chose a Field of Interest Fund at the Community Foundation, his explanation was simple: “ The Community Foundation is a good steward of our contributions.” David sees this as a way to keep their family involved in Barb’s legacy of giving time, talent and treasure for years to come.

Barbara Schipper Early Education Fund FIELD OF INTEREST FUND Unrestricted and Field of Interest Funds combined make up our Community’s Endowment. The Foundation uses these funds to invest in community change across all organizations improving the Holland and Zeeland area. These funds open the possibility that, whatever new challenges or opportunities arise, we’ll have the resources to respond with the best solutions. That’s why they are one of the most important investments you can make in the community that you call home.

“This is the mission of our club, and when we talked about expanding, it was to do just this — to provide that kind of after school space for more of Holland’s kids," —CRAIG SPOELHOF

T

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland opened in 1989 to help young people reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. It particularly focuses on helping the community’s most vulnerable students.

As the largest after-school program in the Holland/Zeeland area, the Boys and Girls Club provides a safe, supervised space along with tools for academic success such as homework help and healthy meals. Working parents have peace of mind knowing their kids are in a safe, positive environment with trained adults. Even after the enormously successful expansion to the north side of Holland in 2010, the club’s board and staff realized there still were unmet needs in the community. With a focus on serving more kids, and through an extensive survey of community needs, the team identified Holland Heights as the area with the greatest need for BGC’s services. A $75,000 grant from the Community Foundation helped make this new site a reality. Kayli Trusty, the unit director for the Boys and Girls Club of Holland Heights, said she was extremely excited when she

heard about the opening of the third location. Based on conversations she had with kids and their parents, she knew this new location meant serving more young people who needed BGC’s services. “We are here to reach the kids who need us the most, it’s in our mission statement,” Kayli said. “These are the kids who need us the most. They need a place with caring adults to help guide them and empower them to realize their full potential.” With higher rates of poverty and many parents working multiple jobs to make ends meet, Craig Spoelhof, the club’s executive director, said it’s important for the Holland community to realize there’s a lot of stress on Holland’s kids. The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland now serves 60 to 70 kids daily at this new location. “We have an awesome staff that allows kids to hang out, do their homework, be healthy, be outside on a sunny day — safely,” Spoelhof said. “When we talked about expanding, it was to do just this — to provide that kind of after-school space for more of Holland’s kids.”

"I know that we couldn’t have done this without the Community Foundation; their support has been instrumental to the whole project," —JEFF MUNROE

F

For more than 25 years, Western Theological Seminary and the Community Action House have partnered to provide a free meal to anyone in the community.

After serving 750,000 meals since 1991, the facilities were very tired and badly in need of repair. More than 200 people come to the kitchen every weekday – from students, faculty and staff to community members in need. Meals were being served in the kitchen, forcing the serving line to pass in front of a large dishwasher. A significant renovation was needed.

The unpredictability of the food donations demands a talented, creative chef. The community is fortunate to have found Ryan Peirce to fill that need.

In 2017, CFHZ awarded the seminary a $30,000 grant to renovate the space, enhancing the Community Kitchen’s ability to continue to provide free meals in a safe, welcoming environment. Updates include new equipment and moving the serving line out of the kitchen and into the dining room.

Munroe sees the Community Kitchen as much more than a place to get a free meal; it’s a space that provides a sense of community, a place that lets people know they’re not alone. For Pierce, it’s also a social hour where people of vastly different backgrounds get to interact.

Jeff Munroe, Executive Vice President of the seminary, said the decision to renovate was a commitment from Western, Community Action House, as well as the community.

16

“We certainly couldn’t pull this off on our own,” he said. Western Theological Seminary provides the physical space, while the Community Action House provides the 200–300 volunteers, the cook, and the food.

The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area 2017 Annual Report

“It’s hard to know what food I’m going to have each day,” Peirce said. “So, I have to stay on my toes and be ready to adapt.”

“I know that we couldn’t have done this without the Community Foundation; their support has been instrumental to the whole project,” Munroe said.

COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANT

Housing Next

A

Affordable housing was already a big challenge in our community, and it is getting bigger. Recent estimates of the shortage of affordable housing increased from 8,000 to 15,000 units. As housing prices continue to increase, incomes have not kept pace. The issue has become increasingly urgent over the past few years as our business, government, and nonprofit partners all see the lack of affordable housing creating tremendous difficulty in many families’ day-to-day lives and constraining our overall ability to grow and thrive as a community. The momentum of these shared concerns, and desire to build a more sustainable future for our community, led to the launch of Housing Next. Housing Next is a bold effort working to decrease the number of people spending more than 35 percent of their income on housing, as that is one of the biggest contributors to financial instability for local families. Recognizing that this issue was at a crucial tipping point, CFHZ made a $500,000 investment — the largest grant in the Foundation’s history — to equip Housing Next for maximum impact over the next five years. “I don’t think any of us can solve this problem on our own,” said Ryan Kilpatrick, Housing Next Director. “Housing impacts employers just as much as nonprofits and governments. It affects our ability to attract and retain talent.”

the table through a multi-year planning process called Ottawa Housing Next, which identified the core strategies and principles that are now guiding Housing Next in its implementation phase. “It’s been pivotal in terms of setting the stage for what we wanted to do,” observed Kilpatrick. “There is a strong understanding that our work going forward will be interwoven with all three sectors of the community.” Achieving Housing Next’s vision will involve increasing the supply of housing units by working with local units of government to collectively clarify their vision for the types of affordable housing developments they desire for their communities and establishing the regulatory environment that will allow those developments to happen. It will also involve assisting developers in accessing public and philanthropic resources to fill financial gaps that might otherwise prevent projects from moving forward.

Kilpatrick brings an extensive background in economic development and city planning to Housing Next. He is supported by a Leadership Council co-chaired by CFHZ President/CEO, Mike Goorhouse, and Holly Johnson, President/CEO of the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. The Council also includes representatives from the West Coast Chamber, Chamber of Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg, United Way of Ottawa and Allegan Counties, Ottawa County, Lakeshore Advantage and Community SPOKE. In addition to the leadership council, there will be a broader Advisory Board which will have representation from developers, businesses, philanthropists, housing nonprofits, and public agencies. While the

“Simply put, we have to provide more housing for more people,” said Kilpatrick. To accomplish this, Housing Next encourages mixed-income and mixedhousing type developments that offer a range of sizes, configurations, and price points to meet different housing needs and budgets. Proximity to places of employment, access to public transportation, grocery stores and other necessities and community supports are also key considerations.

and our community has never been better positioned to take action. “The affordability of housing impacts so many members of our community on an everyday basis in ways we don’t see,” said Kilpatrick. From our neighborhoods to our businesses and schools, the ripple effects of more families being able to find sustainable housing will have a positive lasting impact on the community for years to come.

Strengthening the Nonprofit Sector

I

In addition to directly investing in projects and programs that benefit area residents through competitive grants, we channel a portion of our Community's Endowment funding, totaling $82,000 in 2017, to efforts that strengthen our local nonprofit sector. These are investments in the capacity of our nonprofit organizations, individually and collectively, to maximize their impact in the community. Field Level investments are made in organizations whose roles are to improve the nonprofit sector and foster cross-sector collaboration as well as provide resources that benefit the entire local nonprofit field. Within this space, we support the Lakeshore Nonprofit Alliance which serves area nonprofits by facilitating collaboration, leveraging resources, and providing professional and organizational development opportunities as well as Community SPOKE which enhances the quality of life for all Ottawa County residents through a strategic, coordinated, and

systemic response to human service needs. We also invest in collaborative efforts to gather robust local data that provide critical insights into new and changing needs in our community. These include the Greater Ottawa County United Way Community Assessment and the Ottawa County Youth Assessment Survey (YAS). These tools help all of us to make well-informed, strategic choices about how to make the greatest difference with our available resources.

We believe that leadership capacity drives overall organizational capacity for our nonprofit partners and therefore our Organization Level investments are focused on staff and board leadership.

These efforts include providing nonprofit board trainings from the Johnson Center for Philanthropy to local community members and supporting our nonprofit partners with resources to navigate leadership transitions and to "The Ottawa County-specific retain the best possible staff analysis provided by the YAS leaders for their organizations. has been instrumental in

allowing us to make decisions that are tailored to the needs of the youth in our community. "The Ottawa County-specific analysis provided by the YAS has been instrumental in allowing us to make decisions that are tailored to the needs of the youth in our community, said Dominic Aquino, Youth Advisory Committee Chair.

Combined, these efforts are a critical component of CFHZ’s community impact strategy. They help us maximize the value created by our community endowment dollars for our nonprofit partners and the community members they serve.

Everyone can leave a legacy. More than 175 individuals and couples have made a commitment to support the future of the Holland/ Zeeland area through a deferred gift to the Community Foundation. These generous individuals are recognized through the Foundation’s Bridge Builder Society.

Bridge Builders understand the power of endowment and know that the assets they leave to the community will continue to grow, supporting good work for generations to come. Most importantly, they love Holland/Zeeland and want to see it thrive forever. Bequests from a will are the most common way to leave a future gift to the Community Foundation. However, some have made the Foundation the beneficiary of 401(K)/IRA plans or insurance policies. Others have established a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Charitable Remainder Trust. If you are interested in making a deferred gift or if you have made such a gift and wish to inform the Foundation that a gift has been planned, please contact us. We’d love to welcome you to this special group. Together, we can continue building this community that we call home.

BRIDGE BUILDER SOCIETY

“When you’re looking for that place that will allow you to know that the money will be handled with the highest of accountability, respect and honor, the Community Foundation is that place,” —ED AMAYA

A

As members of our Bridge Builder Society, Ed and Tina Amaya have chosen to look beyond the immediate needs of today, and have committed to the future of the Holland/Zeeland area by naming the Community Foundation in their estate plans. “We have both been so blessed by this community,” said Ed, “So, when you start to ask yourself, ‘how do I leave this behind? Who do I leave it with? Well, we found the perfect place.” Being part of the Holland/Zeeland community their entire lives, Ed and Tina initially met at Vacation Bible School at Fourth Reformed Church. The two later went on to become best friends, then high school sweethearts, until they finally married and started a family together in 1991. Nearly a decade later, Ed had been at the same company for 12 years, and felt it was time to move on. Luckily for him, Tina found the perfect job for her husband and even took the liberty of

sending in his application while he was at work. After his interview at Kenowa Industries, Tina asked him how it went. “I remember telling her, ‘I don’t know why, but I think I just found home.’” Ed said tearfully. “In the end, we end up owning the company, having the ability to impact lives.” Ed explained. At one time, he had thought he was going to be in ministry, impacting lives in a church. Working at Kenowa Industries made him realize that his company was his ministry. “We are a company and a business where we live by our mission statement.” Said Ed. That mission being: We will be a company where valuing people is priority, resulting in an environment whereby all who come in touch with it, will be blessed. “I look back and am thankful,” explains Ed, “but I recognize the goodness of God, and therefore that’s why we have to do what we can to give back to our community—to give back as much as we can where we can.”

For Tina, giving back to the community is a priority because she believes her kids have had such a great life. Providing possibilities for kids who might not have had the same opportunities that she was able to provide her children is what she describes as her biggest motivation to give. “We’re excited that we can do this.” Ed explains. “I would like to be able to do something while we’re still here, and also when we’re not here. It will be through you guys that that will always happen.” “The Community Foundation is a viable, credible source in our community, that ensures that there will be success in our community for many others to enjoy like we have.” Ed continues. “So, when you’re looking for that place that will allow you to know that the money will be handled with the highest of accountability, respect and honor, the Community Foundation is that place.”

Donor Advised Funds

A

A Donor Advised Fund offers the opportunity to create a low-cost, flexible method of charitable giving. With a Donor Advised Fund, donors make a contribution to the fund during the year that is most convenient or tax advantageous for them. Each year, they recommend the nonprofit organizations in which they want to invest, and CFHZ staff do all the work in administering the grants for them. They may choose to give anonymously or in the name of their fund. Donors enjoy administrative convenience, cost savings, and tax advantages by conducting their giving through this type of fund. Donor Advised Funds also offer the option of allowing children to participate as advisors during the donor’s life or to become advisors after the donor’s death. Many people choose this option as a way to include the next generation in the family’s philanthropy, passing along the joy and values of charitable giving.

FUND TYPES: DONOR ADVISED

“Knowing that the Community Foundation is a local option and has proven to be such good stewards of people’s resources allowed us to confidently open our fund with them,” — PATRICK IRISH

P

Patrick and Jasmine Irish are the definition of people who immerse themselves in the community where they live, work, and play. Through their volunteer time and financial support, they have found ways to get creatively involved in many philanthropic efforts in the Holland/Zeeland community. Jasmine grew up in West Virginia as part of a middle-class family. Though their financial resources were limited, she learned at a young age the importance of giving of your time and money however you can. “No one ever told me I had to volunteer and donate,” she said. “I just followed the example that my family set.” When Jasmine moved to Holland, she didn’t waste any time getting involved

in the community. She regularly volunteered with organizations including Boys and Girls Club and Center for Women in Transition. While some people are reactive when it comes to giving money and time, Jasmine actively seeks out needs in our community. When Jasmine and Patrick met, she encouraged him to embrace her family’s philanthropic passion. Through trial and error, Patrick found volunteering opportunities in his wheelhouse of computers, finance, and math. He began teaching computer skills to immigrant women and math and finance skills to high schoolers. Patrick and Jasmine have continued to find creative ways to support organizations — even doing a year of what they called “Charity of the Month.” Their enthusiasm and drive surrounding their desire to create change in our community truly is inspiring.

As they began to consider how to best facilitate their philanthropic giving, they chose to establish a Donor Advised Fund with the Community Foundation. This decision wasn’t made lightly. “As a financial person, I know there are lots of places to establish a Donor Advised Fund,” Patrick said. “Knowing that the Community Foundation is a local option and has proven to be such good stewards of people’s resources allowed us to confidently open our fund with them.” Patrick and Jasmine Irish are a couple who live and breathe generosity. Jasmine’s family put it simply, saying, “If you don’t have money, give your time. If you have time and money, give both.” They are leaning into the family mission, giving their time, talent, and treasure throughout the Holland/Zeeland community.

Irish Family Fund DONOR ADVISED FUND By giving through a Donor Advised Fund, you enjoy administrative convenience, cost savings, and tax advantages. Each year, you can recommend the nonprofit organizations in which you want to invest, and Community Foundation staff do all the work in administering the grants. A Donor Advised Fund offers the opportunity to create a low-cost, flexible method of charitable giving as an alternative to direct giving or creating a private foundation.

Nonprofit Endowment Funds benefit a select nonprofit by providing ongoing support. If the fund is established by a donor, they specify how the endowed funds are to be used, and CFHZ provides ongoing stewardship and oversight to ensure the donor’s intentions are fulfilled. Nonprofit Endowment Funds also can be established by a nonprofit organization to benefit themselves. CFHZ handles investment management and administrative responsibilities related to the endowment allowing the organization’s staff and volunteer hours to be concentrated on accomplishing their mission.

“We have to be ready to meet the growing needs in the community, so we need to start planning well for the future." — MELISSA CONNER

L

Located on the south side of Holland, Renew Therapeutic Riding Center provides horsecentered programs aimed at improving the lives of each of their students. Children and adults with disabilities enhance their independence and self-esteem through equine-assisted activities with the Renew team. ”I believe all people have the right to a full life, to experience their full potential,” said Melissa Conner, Executive Director and certified Advanced Instructor, “I think too many children and adults who live on the margins of society aren’t always given opportunities to get stronger, to do something exciting, to set themselves apart, to achieve something they can be proud of. We want to change that.” Since its inception in 2009, the program has experienced tremendous growth, which has only been accelerated by the opening of its new facility at Rusty Spurs Equestrian Center in 2015. Serving more schools and participants than

ever before, one thing was clear to Melissa: “We have to be ready to meet the growing needs in the community, so we need to start planning well for the future.” The Renew Therapeutic Riding Center executive team was determined to keep up the momentum. To do that, they had to put their funds to work rather than let them sit in a bank account. After exploring several options, the executive team invited CFHZ to explain how the Community Foundation could partner with Renew Therapeutic Riding Center. “We knew that as a nonprofit looking to the future, we needed guidance,” explained Debi Van Schepen, Treasurer of the Board of Directors. “The Community Foundation was a really good fit for us because it has expertise in areas where we needed assistance.” After reading the CFHZ annual report, Debi said Renew’s choice was easy. “It was clear we should have done this months ago,” she said.

Shortly after setting up their Endowed Nonprofit Fund, something wonderfully unexpected happened. “When we received a major gift by surprise, we were so thankful our endowment fund was already in place,” Melissa said. “When the donor said, ‘I would like to make a three-year pledge in these increments and it’s a stock gift, do you have a way of receiving this donation?’ we could say, ‘Why, yes we do!’ Whereas six weeks previously, we wouldn’t have been prepared to do that!” Partnering with CFHZ has given Renew the support and structure it needs to continue to grow and secure its future for our community. “We started down this path with a lot of questions,” Melissa said. “We knew the Community Foundation was a solid organization, and once we learned more about what it could offer, it just felt like the right fit.”

Renew Therapeutic Riding Center NONPROFIT ENDOWMENT FUND Nonprofit endowment funds are endowments that provide permanent income streams to support nonprofits’ programs and operations. The Community Foundation holds and invests the endowed assets, providing responsible and professional fund management. Investment earnings are granted back to the agencies annually to support their mission.

“My whole hope is to give young people who might not have the opportunities, to grow and get a college degree, or go to trade school, to make a better life for themselves.” — BOB HOUTING

T

Tracy Houting was a cheerleader, a singer, a Dutch Dancer, and a National Honor Society member. She was a bubbly, energetic student at West Ottawa High School, strong in her faith and active in her church. Her friends described her as a friend to everyone. Sadly, she was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer and died during a bone marrow transplant, which was her hope for a cure. Her death at age 16 left a hole in her family and in the community. Her uncle Bob Houting wanted to honor his niece’s legacy, so he established the Tracy Houting Scholarship Fund with the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area. Each year, a scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Holland Public, West Ottawa, Zeeland East or Zeeland West who, Like Tracy, possesses vivaciousness, positivity, and humbleness. “She just loved people,” Bob said.Bob’s passion for youth and education, paired with his giving nature, made the establishment of the scholarship a clear choice.

“My whole hope is to give young people who might not have the opportunities, to grow and get a college degree, or go to trade school, to make a better life for themselves,” Bob said. Knowing his niece was planning to go to college, he set up the scholarship fund to help others achieve their dream of higher education. He trusted the expertise of his attorney, who recommended CFHZ, and when he recognized a number of people who give through the Community Foundation, he was reassured in his choice. “Tracy adored her uncle,” said Gloria Houting, Tracy’s mom. “She would be so proud of him for being so generous and selfless. “We’re not wealthy people, and she understood that paying for college would have been difficult without scholarships and grants,” Gloria said. Beloved by her community, Tracy will not be forgotten, as her memory and legacy will live on through the scholarship fund her special uncle so generously set up at the Community Foundation

SPOTLIGHT ON

Youth Advisory Committee CFHZ’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a group of students from our local Holland/Zeeland Area high schools who are responsible for reviewing funding requests and recommending grants for programs that benefit area youth. YAC members meet once a month during the school year for grantmaking, site visits to local organizations, and learning about community needs and philanthropy. The YAC is enriched by the unique perspective and experiences that each member brings to the committee’s work. The YAC program was established in 1991 through a challenge grant from the Michigan Community Foundation Youth Project (MCFYP) funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The mission of the YAC is to empower young people, involve them in the community, and teach them about philanthropy while serving as stewards through granting.

The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area 2017 Annual Report

The YAC members’ most important responsibility each year is reviewing grant proposals and deciding together where to allocate the YAC’s available funding to create maximum positive impact for local youth. In addition, YAC members visited and volunteered at Kids Food Basket and Compassionate Heart Ministries. The YAC also awarded College Visit Mini-grants to ensure low-income, first generation students in our community have the opportunity to experience first-hand different options to continue their education after high school. The Community Foundation is extremely proud of our YAC members and the enthusiasm, dedication, and thoughtful consideration they bring to their work as youth grantmakers and community leaders!

"YAC is a one-of-a-kind experience. We are blessed to live in such a generous community where we are entrusted with guiding the use of the thousands of grant dollars. I am thankful to have been part of this team the past three years. It is truly amazing to see how the decisions of a brilliant group of area high schoolers can make tremendous impacts on the community." —DOMINIC AQUINO, YAC CHAIR
