At 34, Errotl Garner is hailed throughout the world as the outstand~ng contemporary pianist to emerge from the iazz genre. Pittsburgh-born, Garner has been playlng piano sìnce the age of three. His proliflc career bas spanned the rlverboats on the Allegheny Rivet, to the top concert halls of America. Garner is regarded as one of the toost original and dlstlnctlve musical vo~ces of thls century. His style, attack, progresslons and sound are uniquely hls, although scores of pianists today attempt to imitate some of hls "Garnerisms". Every Garner performance is fresh in many respects. He plays by. ear and |mprovises throughout all of his selections, although he bas had to memorlze some of his own recorded hlts in order to satlsfy public demand that he play them as orlglnally recorded. Garner has won awards throughout the music world for hls piano work, including the Grand Prix du Disque in France, for his own performance of his own work, ’~PLAY, PIANO, PLAY," and the ES .QUIRE, METRONOME, DOWNBEAT, PITTSBURGH COURIER and NORFOLK JOURNAL AND GUIDE Awards. He agaln was voted the pianist of the year in the 195ó DOWNBEAT poll, and also was the wlnner of the Downbeat Wqrld Crltlcs Poll this year. Garner records exclusively for Columb~a Records, wlth whom he has a new live year pact. Garner just compJeted a major project at Columbia, where he wrote, arrangèd, and recorded with a 30 plece orchestra, under the baton of Mitch Miller. Garner, incidentally composes on tape, and hls work is transcrlbed by others. Garner’s immedlate plans include a concert tour of colleges in the Unlted States thls rail, tobe followed by hls flrst European tour, beglnning December óth in Paris. Garner will headline the bill at the Olympia Theater in Paris for 3 weeks, to be folIowed by concerts on the continent. Heàvily in demand for concerts throughout the wor~d, Garner is trying to evolve a balanced schedule whlch will permit him to play a maximum of concerts, and yet, leave toom for some occoslonal night club, televislon, and film performances. He also is making more tlme to compose some lengthy works. The solos in thls book were. raken off recordings of Erroll’s by Morris Feldman, an amaz~ng muslcian whose accuracy makes these transcrlptlons exact dupllcates in print of the actual notes played. When Feldman slght reads these solos, you can close your eyes and heat the composer-planlst Garner’s echoes. Muslclans all over the world hovo been eagerly awaltlng the publication of this book.
