Auteur James Lee of DogHouse 73 productions talks about filming love, life, the universe and everything
“We need to get more Malaysians to create content. We got to get Malaysia’s name on the map like what South Korea has evolved to today.”
T
he process of filmmaking itself is what drives me. The creative energy, the execution and that magic moment when you watch from the wings at the premiere at the reaction of the audience, this is what makes worthwhile,” says longtime Malaysian director and executive producer James Lee of DogHouse 73 Pictures. With 17 over films in his name and a career that spans close to a decade, he has made his bones in the industry. Rather than the traditional avenues of film distribution, he’s elected to showcase his work on YouTube. His romance The Girl From Tomorrow, released on Valentine’s Day on YouTube garnered hundreds of clicks on launch. But why go online? James elaborates,”On YouTube, my work and, hopefully other like minded Malaysian filmmakers can reach a global audience .” We need to get more Malaysians to create content. We got to get Malaysia’s name on the map like what South Korea has evolved to today.” James adds,”The costs for filmmaking have gone down. Today, it’s more about passion than hardware. I use a Canon 5D MkII for shooting videos and it’s a fraction of the cost of a dedicated video camera from a few years back. The only barrier is your creativity so get out there and create something!”

LET THE GAMES BEGIN
It’s all fun and games as Shout! investigates just what are the most lucrative mobile apps in Malaysia with surprising results
A
ccording to Gartner Inc, total global revenue from mobile app stores has been estimated at US$26 billion in 2013 and saw 102 billion app downloads. This substantial sum is only getting bigger. Projected revenues in 2017 are estimated at US$77 billion1. A look at App Annie’s statistics for the Malaysia market reveals interesting insight. The top five overall grossing apps on the Google Play store and the Apple App store are all games. In pole position for both is Clash of Clans, an online game that has you battle others with your own troops for supremacy. In second place in both stores is a Chinese match-three game called Tower of Saviours. In fifth place on the Play store is the infamous Candy Crush, with third and fourth place taken up by a strategy game called Castle Clash and a slot machine game called Slotomania. The App store itself is dominated by Chinese games though a kiddy oriented RPG called Battle Camp has proven popular enough to warrant 5th place. What all these games have in common though is that

they’re freemium titles. It costs nothing to download and play though if you want to get into the big leagues you’ll have to fork out real world cash through in-app purchases hence the term freemium. that and continue forking out cash regularly while playing. Clash of Clans reported a revenue of US$892 million last year. Candy Crush earns an estimated US$633,000 a day in in-app purchases on the US App store alone. That’s a lot of money from gaming any way you look at it. So, the next time you whip out your phone to match candies or raid some bad guy’s town, don’t feel so guilty. Everyone else is doing it too.

offers you a free gift – a discount voucher for your favourite burger joint or maybe a free movie ticket - for the trifling price of offering a few personal details like your name, e-mail, age or personal occupation. Or imagine another scenario – you’ve downloaded that new social media app or maybe a new game and suddenly out of the blue, it wants to link up with your Facebook or Twitter profile for ‘easier’ access in exchange for a few virtual gewgaws. Something for the price of nothing is a good thing right? It’s only just a few harmless details, right? Right? Well, think again. Where exactly is all this data going? Who exactly is keeping it? Who has access to this data? How will it be used? All this data forms a profile of who and what you are, your personal habits, your preferences, likes and dislikes. This pervasiveness extends even to what
collated to form a database with you as the subject. With it, marketers can find out and offer personalised ads that would be targeted to best appeal to you. Unfortunately, the problem is what happens with this data if it falls into the wrong hands. For the same reason that you shouldn’t tell a stranger where you live or your phone number, so should you extend this to your online presence. Every scrap of information out there is literal virtual gold and worse, is a dangerous risk. The minute you give out your personal information, you have no control over what happens to it or where it goes. While some companies implement comprehensive data privacy policies, most don’t. The onus is on you to protect your personal data. Here’s a few short tips on how to keep your personal data safe:
Protecting Your Personal Data 1) Treat your personal details and personal data with care. This includes your e-mail address and other personally identifiable demographics. If forced to, give a dummy e-mail address 2) Adjust the privacy settings on Facebook and other social media sites to the level you feel comfortable with. This is located in the settings menu. 3) When linking up to a website or giving personal data to an app or website via a social media site, check the data privacy policy and where the information goes. Read the fine print! 4) Implement robust passwords on your various e-mail accounts and additional login security. Eg- Gmail requires a confirmation number from your phone for log-ins. Q1 2 0 1 4

THE WORD
The word with...
JASON LO
Tune Talk CEO, late night talk show host, musician, producer and family man Jason Lo talks about how he keeps on top of work and family life with the power of tech.
SHOUT!
As a CEO, celebrity, boss, husband and father, you are wearing many hats at the same time. How do you manage all these roles?
Jason: My work involves a lot of communication and that holds true for all the roles I take on. I’m constantly in touch with my colleagues, friends and family to stay on top of things. Technology allows me to be as accessible as possible regardless of where I am. Key to this is the use of a number of apps that enhance communication so that I’m able to make decisions remotely. I also use a lot of social media like Facebook and Twitter. SHOUT!
How do you use technology to maintain a balance between family, career and fans?
Jason: My family and I use the group chat feature on WhatsApp and Facebook a lot. We can seek opinions or advice from each other regardless of distance. This also holds true for work as well and it’s an effective tool to interact with colleagues. SHOUT!
8
How do you stay connected with your family on the go?
Q1 2 0 1 4
Jason: I use SMS, Whatsapp, Skype and Facetime for iPhone. Many technologies enable you to keep in contact with people. Technology doesn’t just change the way you stay connected, it just makes it even more convenient. SHOUT!
What apps do you use the most?
THE WORD Jason I have a lot of apps, over a hundred on my phone and experiment with them to find what works best for me. For now, the apps that see the most use are WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Waze and, of course, Candy Crush. SHOUT!
With kids increasingly being given a smart device these days, how do you manage them and the risks of going online?
Jason: I get involved in what interests them while setting ground rules on where they can head to on the Internet. There’s a massive trove of information available on Wikipedia, Google and YouTube. My kids even searched YouTube to find a tutorial on how to make jelly. Education is literally at our fingertips. If we want to take a role in guiding our kids online, we need to learn the technology that they use and their interests. You’ll have to go through and determine what apps are appropriate for their interests and age while remaining educational and entertaining. Even games have a role to play in developing decision making and handto-eye coordination skills. Of course, this has to be taken in moderation or they’d be glued to the tablet all day.
“Technology doesn’t just change the way you stay connected, it just makes it even more convenient.” SHOUT!
Do you have any parenting tips to share?
Jason: I’m not an expert, but I would say that you have to give some room and allow your kids to explore what they want to explore. I understand the point of giving kids a motivational push in the right direction but they will eventually find their own inclinations and preferences eventually. What’s important is giving them the right foundation and teaching them to use the technology that we have at our disposal responsibly.

How To Keep your Prepaid Phone Credit Valid for a Whole Year! WHAT IS 365-DAY CREDIT VALIDITY? It is a mobile prepaid package offered by mobile service providers to meet the needs and requirements of certain segments of prepaid customers. Introduced in 2008, it stretches the total mobile prepaid credit validity lifespan for up to 365 days.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Usually a minimum fee is deducted from your credit balance, and once activated, it allows the customer to make and receive calls for the entire 365 days. It will enable full utilisation of prepaid credit balances within the period. Customers can now enjoy uninterrupted service over a 365 day (1 year) period.
WHAT ARE THE PLANS OFFERED? Most service providers actually provide this plan to ensure customers will be able to have their account valid for the whole year. The plans are shown as below:

The Cost of Losing Your Smartphone
A lost or stolen tablet costs more than just money. Find out why and what to do if the unforeseen happens...
L
osing a Smartphone or a Tablet can be a costly affair, but while the devices themselves can be replaced, the data on it may be lost forever. If the device belonged to a minor, they may be even more emotionally affected by the loss. To the parents, the loss of their child’s mobile device could spell trouble, especially if it contained personal information about the child. Photos, text messages, notes and their address book could potentially jeopardise not only their safety, but of others as well. In addition, a lost phone can result in heavy phone bills if the thief decides to make international calls. To prevent
this, users can now request for their stolen phones’ IMEI to be blocked, which renders the devices useless. This can be done by making a request to their service provider. It is important to know that most smartphones can be locked if an unauthorised person tries to use the device. There are many apps on Google’s Play Store for this purpose, or users could use the built-in Android Device Manager to enable remote data wiping and device locking. iOS users have the same functionality through the iCloud: Use Lost Mode feature. Do take note that these measures need to have been activated beforehand.
Android Device Manager
iCloud: Use Lost Mode
All Android-based phones have this feature but it needs to be activated manually. Check your Smartphone manual on how to do this as different vendors may have different Settings menus. To locate or lock your Smartphone, use any Internet browser to access www.google.com/android/devicemanager and sign in with the Google account associated with the lost device. From there, users can make the device ring to make it easier to locate. Or if the device is lost or stolen, press the “Setup Lock & Erase” button.
This feature is available on devices with iOS 6 or later. On iOS 5, users can only lock the device but won’t be able to track it. To lock the device, point any browser to and sign in with the Apple ID associated with the Smartphone. Select the device that you want to track or lock and click on the Lost Mode button. Users can then enter a passcode (if the device didn’t have one) which prevents it from being used. You can also enter a message and phone number if it’s found by someone.
