ROD MONTEIRO AND SARIMAH IBRAHIM

The dulcet-voiced duo on the MIX FM Breakfast Show that keep Malaysia entertained with a steady patter of top-of-the-morning commentary mixed with a slick stream of musical hits shares how tech and social media have enhanced the radio star

smartphone, my car and my cat Molly. Rod: My wife and son both. SHOUT!

Who was the most interesting guest that you’ve ever talked to on the show?

Sarimah: I’m a huge fan of Lifehouse. We got them in

the studio one day and I sang a song to him, it’s called “Broken” and I nearly cried. It was a moving experience. Rod: A girl called up from hospital. I sensed she was a potential suicide case and I kept interacting with her on the air and off to make sure she was alright for the whole day and a week afterwards. Two years later she called back thanking me for the time I spent with her.

SHOUT!

How did you get started in show business?

Rod: I have a background in stage work. I’ve done

hosting, DJ’ing and also did a stint as an emcee though it was hard to maintain a family with my erratic work schedule. I auditioned for Mix FM and here I am now.

Sarimah: When I was 18, a lady came up to me and asked

me to audition for a toothpaste commercial. I got the part and was in several product commercials after that. I went on to star in a series of Malay movies and now I’m a radio DJ.

SHOUT!

What’s a typical day at work like?

Sarimah: Being on the Breakfast Show is like doing a TV

show, though it’s a lot more challenging than singing, being on TV or acting. With radio, you have to paint images with only the sound of your voice. There has to be scripting, planning, follow ups...the works. I wake up at 3AM and reach the office by 4AM where we go over the day’s programme. At 6AM we go live. Rod: Through the course of the show there’s a lot of social interaction as well; we need to be on top of current events, trends and music to keep listeners informed and entertained. Once our slot is over it’s back to planning for the next day’s work. SHOUT!

What are the things in life that you can’t do without?

Sarimah: My loved ones come first. Other than that it’s 8

Q2 2014

“We all still desire a human connection, listening to a real voice rather than just seeing a touchscreen. That’s where radio comes in. People still want to connect and hear and get to know personalities.” Sarimah Ibrahim SHOUT!

How do you think social media affects your work or changes it? Will radio remain relevant in an age of instant updates?

Sarimah: Social media is now an arm of radio rather

than a distinct separate channel. Before social media became big on the scene, radio was just a distant voice that you tuned in to. With social media, there’s a whole new level of interactivity and there’s an immediacy to it that’s hard to top though it won’t render radio obsolete; not by far. We all still desire a human connection, listening to a real voice rather than just seeing a touchscreen. That’s where radio comes in. People still want to connect and hear and get to know personalities. Rod: Not everyone can listen in and some listeners prefer to Tweet or use Facebook rather than tuning in so these social media channels act as a complementary channel for people to interact with us. Radio will be here for a long time to come folks.

MOVING HEARTS AND MINDS

Master storyteller Quek Shio Chuan talks about how he got into the art of filmmaking and his directorial journey

W

“As a filmmaker, you have an inherent responsibility to create content that imparts a beneficial, uplifting message.”

hen I was still an undergraduate at UTAR in 2008, my lecturer persuaded me to participate in the Astro Nextgen Contentpreneur Awards. My submission called Contaminated won the award for Outstanding Music Video. I took part again next year with a documentary called Tidal Tales. This won the Revolutionary Documentary and Phenomenal Art Direction award. I’ve never looked back since. I’m currently attached to Reservoir Production as a director and with them I’ve had the opportunity to work with a number of high profile clients and you’ll have seen some of their commissioned work on TV like Yuna’s Sparkle music video for Samsung as well as Strangers and Young Hearts for Petronas. I find realising the visions of my clients gratifying but my passion remains in film making. I love making films that have a positive message about them. As a filmmaker, you have an inherent responsibility to create content that imparts a beneficial, uplifting message. While it’s easy to make a film watchable by throwing in something trendy or controversial, it’s a test of the true filmmaker’s craft to do so without such sensationalism. I also love exploring fringe characters in society like the autistic guy from Guang and the mortician in Sunflowers. These people are all around us and I’d like to share their story with the world. I dream to expand my portfolio to be a feature film director one day over my current featurettes and commercial work. Currently, there isn’t much of a calling for English language features in the Malaysian film industry as the most successful ones are primarily in the vein of the usual gangster or ghost movies. What broke the mould last year was Journey the movie – it’s the most successful Malaysian film ever. I aspire to create something as beautiful one day. For those who’ve just started their journey in filmmaking, don’t be afraid to turn your ideas into films. If you don’t shoot it, it will still just remain an idea. The best way to master the art is to do it yourself so you can learn where your shortcomings are and avoid them in the future. Practice makes perfect.

DIGITAL LIFE

There is nothing more dreaded in the course of the day barring misadventure or mishap than the dreaded beep of a smartphone wailing ‘Low Battery’. While this isn’t an issue when you’re near a power source, it’s a recipe for disaster when you’re a mile away from a wall plug with nary a power bank in sight and you desperately need to eke out just that little extra bit of power to last through the day. Follow these seven tips – they’ll work for most smartphones today – and you’ll go a long way to enjoying longer battery life.

Steps by Steps

1.

DIM THE SCREEN Go into settings and dim your phone display down to the lowest level that you can comfortably read text at or set it to auto mode. You can also set a shorter screen timeout duration.

2.

TURN OFF WI-FI, GPS AND BLUETOOTH Your smartphone drains battery power scanning and searching for Wi-Fi hotspots as well as when you turn on GPS and Bluetooth connectivity. Turn them off if you’re not using them.

3.

DISABLE DYNAMIC WALLPAPERS Many phones have dynamic wallpapers with fancy animations that look great but drain battery life. Switch back to normal static wallpaper or a plain black background for less drain.

ith new technologies comes new ways of interacting with people and unfortunately, new ways of abusing it. With the advent of social media networks and new forms of communication via smart devices, bullies today are not just limited to face-to-face encounters or poison pen letters. The cyberbully can strike anytime, anywhere and hurt anyone with texts, social media posts, SMS or e-mails. It isn’t just limited to sending threatening messages. Cyberbullies can even pretend to be the victim online and spread lies and rumours or even post embarassing or hurtful pictures and videos. The effect on victims can be devasting, making them become withdrawn, humiliated, depressed, angry or worse; what more a child. Ofttimes, a child may be

How Do You Tell If Your Child is Being Cyberbullied

TURN OFF HAPTIC FEEDBACK Many smartphones vibrate to indicate incoming messages or for more responsiveness when using the touchscreen. Turn this function off and you save a bit of battery power. MANAGE YOUR NETWORK When your phone is searching for a network, it uses up battery power. If your phone has LTE and you’re in an area that lacks good LTE reception, it keeps searching to no avail and just wastes power. Set your network to just use 3G mode instead.

1) Your child acts angry, irritable, withdrawn or shies away from using their smartphone, tablet or PC and acts upset, nervous or uncomfortable when using or getting messages from them. 2) They start shying away socially from classes, school or social occasions that they would normally attend. 3) Unusual changes in behaviour at home such as a lack of appetite or even bingeing out on food or avoiding going out with friends or family altogether.

reluctant to communicate their distress for many reasons, among them shame or fear. Identifying and addressing this scourge requires open communication and observation of your child. Is he or she feeling withdrawn or having unusual behavour from the norm? Are they feeling upset or shy away from certain classes, activities or after going online? It’s possible then that he or she may be a cyberbullying victim. Reassurance, constant communication with your child and support is needed at this crucial juncture as well as firm action. While there’s no overnight solution to resolving cyberbullying, parents can make a decisive difference in identifying and protecting their children from this plague.

What To Do If Your Child is Being Cyberbullied 1) Reassure and tell your child that they did the right thing to tell you about it and that they should not respond to the bully 2) Sit down and compile a record of cyberbullying and gather evidence - e-mail, SMS and websites – save or print them out. 3) Help to remove the bully from your child’s friend lists and block them on social media to prevent further bullying 4) If your child thinks the cyberbully is a fellow student, talk to their teacher and highlight the issue. If you worry that your child is in danger, contact the police. Also contact your child’s Internet, mobile provider and highlight what has happened so they can help suspend the bully’s account or remove hurtful content. Q2 2014
