Our Mission The Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc., works with our citizens to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations. We accept gifts, administer funds, and make grants to meet needs throughout the county.

Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc.

From the President The Community Foundation of Morgan County – with the help of friends like YOU – experienced unprecedented growth and success in 2002. It is only with your support that we can build for the future! As President of the Community Foundation of Morgan County Board of Directors in 2002, it is my pleasure to share with you this report of the past year. I hope you will not only enjoy reading about our achievements, but also share in the pride of these accomplishments. I would be remiss if I did not thank some of the “architects” who helped the Community Foundation James Harris of Morgan County in 2002. The Community Foundation Board of Directors led the way, developing President, Board of Directors a strategic plan and offering their time, expertise, and financial support to put the plan into action. Citizens Bank established the groundwork by making a $20,000 gift to the Community Foundation, the largest single corporate gift in the history of both organizations. The Lilly Endowment GIFT V Initiative (Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow, Phase 5) provided extra incentive, matching all gifts to the CommonWealth Endowment dollar for dollar and matching gifts to the Evergreen Fund $2-to-$1. Most importantly, though, thank YOU. The Community Foundation of Morgan County exists because of our partnerships with our donors, grantees, scholarship recipients, volunteers, and friends. Because of your generosity and support, the Community Foundation will be here to serve all of our county for years to come. Together we can build a better future for Morgan County.

From the Executive Director Indiana’s First Lady Judy O’Bannon said, “When we invest in our communities, that very act of taking responsibility opens up new opportunities and the result is a community of hope. Philanthropically, Hoosiers have stepped up in big and small ways over the years and through these acts, added momentum, resources, and attention to the many ways we build hope within our communities.”

Erin Pritchard Frew Executive Director

Much of that hope has been fostered through Indiana community foundations. Indiana has more community foundations than any other state in the nation - 94 - and their combined assets totaled $1,300,000,000 (that’s one billion, 300 million!) at the end of 2002. The Community Foundation of Morgan County is proud to be among the Indiana community foundations that are adding momentum, identifying and contributing resources, and focusing attention on philanthropic opportunities which build hope for our communities.

In 2002, the Community Foundation of Morgan County experienced exciting growth and activity through existing and new programs. These programs provided a variety of opportunities for many individuals and organizations. We awarded a number of scholarships which were established by Morgan County donors; and we named 3 additional Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipients, bringing to 11 the total of Lilly Scholars from Morgan County. Total scholarships paid in 2002 were approximately $66,200. We continued our “Mini Grants for Major Impact” program, awarding 19 grants for a total of $17,646. We also awarded 5 arts grants for a total of $4,300. Additional grants from funds held at the foundation totaled approximately $85,000. Our supporting organization, the Kendrick Foundation, Inc., held their first-ever grant cycle. Six organizations received a total of $176,500 to assist with health-care issues in Morgan County. All of these grants and scholarships combined provided $349,646 to address needs in our community. The community foundation was pleased to provide training for organizations and their board members at a nominal fee. Called “Boardwalk,” it featured local experts leading sessions on “Effective Grant Writing” and “Marketing and Public Relations.” Another wonderful addition to our programming was “Make A Difference Morgan County.” The Make A Difference Honor Roll included 82 honorees (72 individuals and 10 organizations) who were recommended for making a difference through their kindness and volunteerism. A gala event celebrated the honorees and the spirit of giving in Morgan County. All this would not be possible without our terrific board and staff members and, most importantly, YOU! Working together to invest in our community, we have the opportunity to build a community of hope for generations to come.

Building Youth: Grantee Profiles Building for the Future includes preparing our children for lifelong learning. Community Foundation grants in 2002 supported three such programs in Morgan County. Y’s Owl Preschool purchased equipment to develop gross motor and math skills. “Children this age learn best by moving and using their whole bodies,” says Director Sue Walker. “This equipment will provide a safe, encouraging environment for exploration and growth.” The Mental Health Association in Morgan County provides “I’m Off to School” coloring books for all county children entering kindergarten. Jack McTaggart, Executive Director, says the books help acclimate students to a new environment and set a positive tone for their school career. And, with a trip to hear the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, third graders at Monrovia Elementary School discovered how their education can extend beyond their school building. Principal Chris Sampson speaks highly of such cultural activities, noting that they enrich the classroom experience. The Community Foundation of Morgan County is pleased to support these and other charitable programs that are building for the future!

Building For The Future: 2002 Annual Report

Building Programs Make A Difference Morgan County and GIFT V Recap Make A Difference Morgan County, a new program of the Community Foundation in 2002, has two goals: (1) to recognize our community’s unsung heroes – those people who make it a habit of doing good every day of the year and (2) to raise money for the CommonWealth Endowment – the fund from which the Community Foundation makes a difference through grants made to charitable organizations and worthwhile projects throughout Morgan County. In its first year, Make A Difference Morgan County recognized 72 individuals and 10 organizations that have contributed to the betterment of our communities. Make A Difference Morgan County Honorees ranged in age from 18 to 80 and represent every community in the county. We’re fortunate here in Morgan County to have folks who Make A Difference every day of the year. Their generosity inspires all of us to follow their example by finding our own way to Make A Difference! With the extra incentive of matching grants from Lilly Endowment’s GIFT V Initiative (Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow, Phase 5), gifts to the Community Foundation of Morgan County in 2002 exceeded all expectations, totaling $159,546. Gifts to the Evergreen Fund, the fund that supports the day-to-day operations of the Community Foundation of Morgan County, totaled $50,000 in 2002. This amount includes our largest-ever corporate gift, $20,000 from Citizens Bank, as well as gifts from 100% of the Community Foundation Board of Directors and staff. These gifts will be matched $2-for-$1 by Lilly Endowment, resulting in an additional $100,000 for Morgan County.

Over 170 people attended the Make A Difference Morgan County Celebration at Martinsville’s South Elementary School.

Y’s Owl preschoolers work on their motor skills.

The past year also brought $54,656 for the CommonWealth Endowment, the fund from which grants are made to charitable organizations throughout Morgan County. Contributions to the CommonWealth Endowment in 2002 included $43,610 in gifts made during the Community Foundation’s first-annual Make A Difference Morgan County campaign. These gifts, plus gifts of $54,890 to other charitable funds held by the Community Foundation, will result in $109,312 in matching funds from Lilly Endowment.

Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc.

Building Community: Larue & Cynthia Brewer Larue & Cynthia Brewer of Mooresville believe in giving back to their community. They want to be active and involved in groups where they can help and make a difference...and they do just that with (among others) the Boy Scouts, Mooresville Lions Club, and Mooresville First Christian Church. The Brewers were among the first in Morgan County to recognize how a community foundation could help not only their favorite charitable projects, but charitable endeavors throughout the county. Larue & Cynthia have given generously of their time and resources to build our Morgan County community through the Community Foundation, and we appreciate their efforts. Says Cynthia: “Your community invests in you, so it’s important to invest in your community.”
