Prominent SA Culture Featured at Luminaria Arts Festival By: Carissa Gonzales
Music, lights, and the scents of delicious food filled the air as Luminaria opens its doors for a second shot at success. Due to inclement weather, the Luminaria Arts Festival has been pushed back from its original date of October 2015 to February 2016. Held at San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), the event’s outcome was a success, mainly because of the diverse spread of artists. At first glance, audiences are faced with just another arts festival, but upon entering SAMA’s courtyard area, spectators are integrated into an arts festival like no other. From stilt-walking performance arts to large scale projection mapping, Luminaria is sure to shine. Throughout the night, several prominent artists captured the attention of guests. Artists with all ages and cultures were featured but none so much as Latino culture. Mas Rudas, a San Antonio Chicana artist group, held their exhibit Walking Alters, which is based off of religious alters placed in South Texas front yards. These meticulous alters are primarily made by women, and act as symbols of prayer and meditation, usually following a crisis. Mas Rudas suited up and personified these cultural symbols by wearing alter costumes on their backs. The first part of the exhibit showcased the members sitting in the courtyard lawn meditating like lifeless sculptures. Each member chose to represent issues in the United States, including political problems of immigration, exclusion of Mexican-Americans in Texas history, and issues surrounding Chicana women. Flyers were placed in front for spectators to grab and read for more information. For the second half of the exhibit, Walking Alters stood up and began to parade around the SAMA courtyard with purpose. Each guest that came into contact with this exhibit had a chance to speak to each Mas Rudas group member and ask questions. Audiences were intrigued by these alters because of their integration into the Luminaria experience. Several cutting edge experiences really captured the audiences’ attention but none more like Tortillas and Technology, created by a local maker group, Convergent Media Collective (CMC). As Tejano music blasted through speakers to set the mood, their exhibit featured a photo booth connected to a high-tech lasercutter where guests could snap a photo and have it laser-engraved upon a tortilla. In this situation, where tortillas were for decoration, not eating, guests had the opportunity to speak with each of the collective members while waiting for their customized tortilla. Questions were raised on the

intentions for this exhibit and the story behind its creation. Members of CMC were happy to answer these questions and excited for the community interest in their project. One of the CMC members, Andrew Valdez, spoke about how he fused Latino culture, technology, and art by laser printing cultural symbols onto a non-traditional canvas, a tortilla. “Tortillas and Technology is a project that showcases how Latino culture can be integrated with technology and art” said Andrew, “The simplest ideas are usually the most effective ones and I’m glad we are able to share this with the San Antonio community.” The integration of Latino culture in Tortillas and Technology is a modern day way of telling stories of how people interpret symbolism of Latino culture in inanimate objects. CMC’s main goal was for stories like these, that similar cultures can relate, to inspire others to learn more about Latino culture. In addition to their Tortillas and Technology exhibit, the Convergent Media Collective was able to crowd-fund all of their equipment including the cutting-edge laser printer which will be used to help in educating the San Antonio K-12 community. San Antonio’s Luminaria Festival housed these cultural events that planted inspiration to every person, young or old. This event provided audiences with a chance to get up-close and personal with some of San Antonio’s rising artists. With such a diverse spread of installations like Mas Rudas’ Alters and Tortillas and Technology, these cultural symbols and representations of art and technology fusion focused on educating the public and signifying a culture dire for attention. A frequent attendee, Luis Torres, was excited to join in on the exhibit Tortillas and Technology, “This is the one that stood out. I think it’s great that they have burned images of Selena, and other things that I can relate to,” said Luis “Seeing people of all different backgrounds come together and be just as impressed as I am, makes me proud to be Latino.” SAMA will continue to inspire younger generations to question why these exhibits are important and why they are being showcased at a big event such as Luminaria. Each year, Luminaria will choose a different location to host these artists. Next year, the Luminaria board has already determined that the festival will be held on the city’s west side. Their intent is to deepen the experience of artists’ backgrounds and inclusion as a whole. The communities’ hopes for a larger scope of artists will continue and the anticipation for amazing cultural arts like this year’s will live on. ##
