2013 SEASON PREVIEW After a trying 2012 season that saw the Coast Guard women’s soccer team finish 3-13-0 (1-8-0 NEWMAC), the Bears seem primed to take the next step to reach their primary goal and qualify for the NEWMAC tournament for the first time since the 2003 season. The optimism stems from the fact that the Bears lost just two starters from a season ago with the loss of Jill Kelly and graduation of Kelsey Freeman. In addition to returning the vast majority of their starting lineup, Coast Guard also welcomes in a strong freshman class that features eight new faces. It should prove to be strong mix of veteran leadership and youthful talent. The Bears will be led by seventh-year head coach Susan Grant (Cortland State, ‘95) and she’ll be assisted by Amanda Illinger (seventh season), Lt. Beth Nakagawa (first season), and Anthony Occhialini (first season). The leadership responsibilities will not fall entirely on the coaching staff as senior tri-captains Devin Fellman, Judy Hooymans, and Emily Marks will be expected to be shoulder some of that load both on and off the field. Coach Grant had a number of positive things to say about each of the captains. She said of Fellman, “Devin will be a key given the position she plays. Her maturity and vocal leadership, as well as her game sense are keys to guiding her teammates.” Hooymans “is more of an off-the-field leader, making sure everything is going well behind the scenes. On the field, she works her tail off providing an example for her teammates to follow.” Emily Marks, however, falls somewhere in the middle of those two by “blending the leadership styles of Devin and Judy excellently. She provides important communication from the center back position and is a hard worker.” Perhaps most key for the upcoming season is the amount of experience that they return. As with anything, teams are built around defense and Coast Guard is wellpositioned in this regard. Fellman returns in goal after a strong season a year ago that saw her post an .812 save percentage (125 saves). The Bears will have two backups to Fellman in juniors Holly Moore and Brittany Zirulnick. Additionally the Bears bring back three starting defenders in Hooymans, Marks, and junior Avery Ayers. Those three started all 16 games a season ago as the Bears recorded three shutout victories and held opponents to just 1.82 goals per game. Ayres will be important as an outside back going into her third season as a started and counted on to be a force in the backfield.
On the offensive end the Bears return 85.7% of their scoring from last season led by Marks (4 goals) and sophomore forwards Caroline Eastman (3 goals) and Sheila Dutt (2 goals). Also returning are a pair of forwards in junior Liz Runci and sophomore Sarah Hills who recorded two assists apiece last year, both of whom will be expected to up their contributions this season. Coach Grant sees Hills as a key cog in this year’s offense, expecting her to be one of the Bears’ primary goal scorers.

The Bears will also return starters Kristen Euchler (senior, midfielder), Lindsay Duplessis (junior, forward), and Hanna Jansson (sophomore, midfielder/defender). According to Coach Grant, “Euchler is a senior workhorse and the team feeds off her energy. She gives 110% all the time and will be counted on to be a leader.” Duplessis will also play a crucial role as a center midfielder where she’ll be counted on to lead and direct the offense. The midfield will be crowded as well this season with the return of junior Julia Mundy and sophomore Madison Ahlers. Mundy was used in a reserve role last season, who should see an increase in playing time this year. Ahlers battled through injury in 2012, but when healthy was a valuable asset and she’ll be counted on to stay healthy and provide depth in the midfield. The Bears will also welcome in a pair of freshmen in Alyssa Sato (Waldorf, Md.) and Brianna Grisell (Brookfield, Conn.) who will be expected to be immediate contributors. The schedule for the 2013 season will be challenging as always and strongly resembles the one put together a year ago. The Bears open the season at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary’s (MD) College against Randolph-Macon. The schedule features a pair of new teams including a match-up in the home opener on September 8th against UMass Dartmouth as part of the Conn. College/CGA Tournament. Also new to the Bears’ schedule will be NEWMAC newcomer Emerson as Coast Guard will play them in a road game on October 26th. The key to this season will be more of an emphasis on the offensive end with the combination of experience and youthful talent that this year’s team offers. According to Coach Grant, “we’ll have to maximize our chances but we’ll also need to generate more shots which will lead to an increase in scoring.” The schedule will also feature a four-pack of games against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams. It gets started with a road game at Lasell on September 4th. Also included are a trio of home dates with Springfield (September 21st), Wheaton (October 22nd), and MIT (November 2nd). The team goals for the season will be to qualify for the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time since 2003 and to sport a .500 winning percentage for the first time since 2002. From an execution standpoint, the club would like to be able to put half of their shot attempts on net and to defensively take aim at the school shutout record.

Coast Guard will also welcome back sophomore Andrea Saldana, who after starting her career as a reserve, worked her way into a starting role towards the end of last season as their fourth starting back. The Bears will also be adding two newcomers to the backfield depth chart with the additions of freshmen Emily Matthews (Chandler, Az.) and Kat Beasley (Voluntown, Conn.), both of whom will be expected to step in and contribute immediately.
Coast Guard will also welcome in a pair of standout freshmen to the forward and midfield ranks. Terry Netusil (Baldwinsville, N.Y) and Katie Clark (Sacramento, Ca.) are currently in line to be a starters after stellar preseason camps.
Things are looking positive and Coach Grant is excited to get the season underway, especially with the addition of this year’s freshmen to complement a solid returning core. “This year’s group is very talented and different from previous classes. They are more confident and comfortable when they step onto the field and that’s shown by their propensity towards being vocal. They really seem to be meshing well with the upper classmen and they communicate well both on and off the field. The 2013 season gets underway on Friday, August 30th at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary’s (MD) against Randolph-Macon at 4:00 pm. The championship round will take place a day later with the consolation match at 12:00 pm and the championship at 2:00 pm. The Bears will open up their home schedule on Sunday, September 8th when they host UMass Dartmouth in the Conn. College/CGA Tournament.

REAR ADMIRAL SANDRA L. STOSZ ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT THIRD YEAR Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz assumed the duties of the 40th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 3, 2011. She reported to the Academy after serving as the Director of Reserve and Leadership at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. There she was responsible for developing policies to recruit, train and support approximately 8,100 Coast Guard Reservists.

Rear Admiral Stosz is a surface operations officer with 12 years at sea, including command of two cutters – an icebreaking tug on the Great Lakes and a medium endurance cutter that patrolled North Atlantic and Caribbean waters. She and her crews executed many of the Coast Guard’s 11 missions such as drug and alien migrant interdiction, fisheries enforcement, search and rescue, polar and domestic icebreaking and ports and waterways security. Between sea duty tours Rear Admiral Stosz specialized in personnel and resource management and program review. She served tours of duty as Chief of Officer Assignments and as Program Reviewer and Acquisition Funds Coordinator for Coast Guard major systems acquisitions, including the 225-foot buoy tenders and 87-foot coastal patrol boats. She broadened her experience as the Secretary of Transportation’s military assistant and years later as the Commandant’s executive assistant. She has served as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard’s recruit training center in Cape May, New Jersey and as Director of Coast Guard Enterprise Strategic Management and Doctrine where she was responsible for aligning enterprise level strategic and management functions with the Commandant’s strategic intent. Rear Admiral Stosz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in Government. She was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University’s J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1994. In 2000 she completed an executive fellowship in national security through the MIT Seminar XXI program, and she earned a Master of National Security Strategy from the National War College in 2004. In 2009 she attended the Navy’s Executive Business Course at University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler business school. Rear Admiral Stosz’s personal awards include three Legion of Merit Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals and two Coast Guard Achievement Medals.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS THIRD YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick just completed his second academic year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships.
ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.

Strength and Conditioning Coach
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Joe Crozier is in his second year as the head of the Strength and Conditioning Program with the Coast Guard Athletic Department. Crozier came to the Academy from California State University-Chico where he earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise physicology and his masters degree in kinesiology. Joe is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach with distinction through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Certified Personal Trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine. Joe designs and implements workout regimens for all of our varsity sport programs. Working with teams both in-season and out-of-season, Joe’s focus is to better prepare athletes for competition by concentrating on sport-specific programs designed to achieve the ultimate level of success. Coast Guard’s strength and conditioning program is dedicated to ensure each cadet-athlete is equipped with the correct instruction, knowledge and guidance to reach their peak performance level and to decrease the potential for injuries. Our program also preaches the importance of a proper, nutritionally balanced diet as well as appropriate pre-game and post-game routines to ensure safe preparation, performance, and recuperation for each contest.

Susan begins her seventh season as head soccer coach at Coast Guard. Grant, a 1995 graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland with a degree in Physical Education, has a wide variety of coaching experience, having coached women’s soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey at several levels. Susan, who played both soccer and basketball for NCAA Division III power, State University of New York at Cortland, also earned her Masters degree in Health Education from Cortland State in 1998. Grant holds both a National Diploma and a state goalkeeping diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ithaca College in physical education, where she was a multi-position player for the Perennial powerhouse, Ithaca College Bombers. Coach Illinger is a Connecticut native, hailing from Hanover, CT where she was a softball standout at Norwich Free Academy. In 2008-2009, she was the recipient of the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Assistant Coaches Award.

LT. BETH NAKAGAWA ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON LT Beth Nakagawa is in her first season at the United States Coast Guard Academy as an assistant coach. Nakagawa is a 2007 graduate of the Coast Guard, where she was a four-year leetterwinner and a team captain as a senior for Coach Grant. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering at the Academy before earning her Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and an MBA from the University of Illinois during the summer of 2013. LT Nakagawa has served as a Student Engineer on the CGC Rush (2007-09) and as a project manager for the CEU Oakland (2009-11). She currently is on a teaching Assignment at the Coast Guard Academy, teaching Statics and Engineer Design as well as a Civil Engineering Materials Class and Lab.
ANTHONY OCCHIALINI ASSISTANT COACH - GOALKEEPERS FIRST SEASON Anthony Occhialini is in his first season at the United States Coast Guard Academy fulfilling the role of goalkeeper coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Occhialini is a 2009 graduate of Montville High School and 2013 graduate of Central Connecticut State University. He was a three-time All-Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC) selection, a two-time All-State selection and a 2008 All-American in high school for the Indians. He was named the MVP of the National High School Soccer All-Star Game. Anthony earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Central Connecticut where he was a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Academic honor roll all four years. The Blue Devils won the NEC regular season championship in 2011.

JAKE IBEY ATHLETIC TRAINER SEVENTH SEASON Jake is in his second season as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. He has been an athletic trainer for eight years. Jake graduated from the University of New England with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. He then graduated with his master’s degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Advanced Rehabilitation. Before working at the Coast Guard Academy, he worked in many different high schools all over the state of Connecticut.
