2017 ONLINE GUIDE
2017 SEASON PREVIEW The Coast Guard women’s lacrosse team is back to the basics for the 2017 season as they concentrate on growth, building a team legacy and preparing for the difficult New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule. First year head coach Mary Heneberry comes to the team with a wealth of knowledge from playing Division I lacrosse at Loyola to spending the last four years as the first assistant at Washington & Lee helping the team to two Regional Finals in 2014 and 2015. “Our first priority quickly became establishing what it means to be an ambassador of this program and that it is a privilege to be a Bear - who are we?” said Heneberry. “What are our values? Our tradition’s? What is expected of each player and coach? What is our team culture and how do we maintain it? What is our legacy? We’ve spent the majority of our non-traditional and pre-season building the foundation on which these players want the program to stand. The team has taken ownership of this process and we are grateful as coaches to be a part of the growth.” Tasked with helping lead the team this season are captain’s senior Sierra Webb and junior Cecelia Hosley who have been members of the team since the inaugural 2015 season.
The Bears return 12 players to the rosters from last year’s team that understands the rigors of the fast and competitive spring schedule. “Our returners are excited to see where the team can go this year,” said Heneberry. “We’ve spent a lot of time talking about what they define as
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Joining the 12 returners are 10 newcomers who have jumped into the spring excited for the upcoming season. “The freshmen are an athletic and spunky group,” added Heneberry. “Most of them are dual-sport athletes, so they’re coming to lacrosse with a fall season of competition under their belts. This has really helped their integration into our team and their confidence level.” With 16 games in just over two months, Heneberry and her coaching staff are prepared to return to the fundamentals and build these into larger game concepts. “My assistant (Katie McHugh) and I felt it was important to bring everything back to the basics whether we were focusing on team culture and player relationships, or lacrosse fundamentals and larger game concepts,” said Heneberry. “Our players are systematic, linear thinkers, so we embraced that approach to break down the basic body mechanics of just catching and throwing. If you can’t catch and throw, you can’t play lacrosse. We used this approach moving forward with other skills, language we’ll use on the field and body positioning. Through this approach we’re making a lot of progress.” Coast Guard starts the season with two out of conference home games against Eastern Connecticut and Salve Regina before taking a trip south for games against Stockton and Virginia Wesleyan during the teams spring break.
SEASON PREVIEW
“Sierra Webb and Cecelia Hosley have come into their own as captains,” added Heneberry “Their different strengths and styles of leadership help bridge the gaps between each of their teammates – they’re doing a good job catering the ways they motivate to each individual.”
success and what our goals for the season are, and right now we’re just focused on growth skill-wise, mentally and strengthening team chemistry.”
The Bears will once again play Merchant Marine on the road this year on March 18th before moving into conference play with notable games against MIT, Springfield, Wheaton and Babson. The team opens the season this Saturday, February 25th at home against the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors. Opening draw is 11:30.

In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums.
