2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW Coast Guard returns its top two scorers and nine players overall from a team that finished 5-20 overall and 2-12 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) last season. Although the Bears won just five games last season, they were competitive every night, as ten of their losses were by ten points or less with four of those either in double overtime or by a single point. “We didn’t win a lot of games last season, but we lost ten games by ten or fewer points, so it’s right there,” said Coast Guard head coach Kevin Jaskiewicz. “We did a lot of things that winning teams do, but we were just not finishing games, but I feel like with the new additions that we have that we can do a better job and win some of those close games down the stretch.” Senior captain David Anderson returns to the front court after making 19 starts last season and leading the team in both scoring (11.3) and rebounding (5.5) last season. He also led the team with 15 blocks and was second on the team with 43 assists. Junior Ricky Rodriguez, who started all 25 games, returns at the shooting guard spot for the Bears. Rodriquez was second on the team last year with 8.4 points per game. He led the team with 32 three-points baskets shooting 28.8 percent (32-111) from behind the arc. He was also second on the team with 27 steals and third on the team with 3.6 rebounds per game.
Junior Kevin Alvarez (5.4 ppg.), who played in all 25 games and made two starts last season and sophomore Adrian Chuquillangui (3.4 ppg.), who appeared in 24 games a year ago will see time at the wing spots for the Bears. Junior Ryan McNeil (5.4 ppg.), who made four starts last season will see time both at the shooting guard and small forward spot while junior Mark Krebs (2.4

The Bears are excited about the incoming freshman class led by forwards Ethan Boose and Zak Bradley as well as Micah Baldez and swing man Mark Elliott. “We were able to add depth, athleticism and skill with the young players and they are getting better and better each day and I expect them to make contributions this season,” said Jaskiewicz. Boose at 6’5” and Bradley at 6’7” give the Bears a pair of big bodies in the front court while Baldez will compete for time at point guard and Elliott, a swing player, can bring athleticism to both the back and front court. Coast Guard will open the season in Puerto Rico as part of the Armed Forces Classic taking on HampdenSydney at Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen on Friday, November 14 at 1 p.m. EST live on ESPN U. The Bears will play just two of their ten first semester games at home. “We are excited to open the season on ESPN U in Puerto Rico, it will be a great experience four our team,” said Jaskiewicz. “ Playing eight road games in the first semester will be a challenge, with some tough places to play, like at Merchant Marine and at Army, but we have an experienced group of guys now that understand the expectations and those games will prepare us for the challenge of competing in the NEWMAC during the second semester.”
SEASON PREVIEW
Senior Eli Sponseller (4.4 ppg.), who made nine starts last season and junior Avierre Conner (4.6 ppg.), who played in just 11 games last season, will see time at the point guard spot this season.
ppg.), who made 13 starts last season, and sophomore Devon Zych, who missed most of last season with an injury, will give the Bears plenty of depth in the front court.
“We have to take it as a game-by-game approach and we did a pretty good job of that last year going out and competing and the guys know that the most important thing is to compete every night and when you do, it gives you the best chance to win games and that is really what we are focused on, “said Jaskiewicz. “I was happy with our defensive effort last season as we ranked 65th of 409 Division III teams and we held eight of our opponents to 60 points or less and that will again be a key this season.”

In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

In 1999, Coach Jaskiewicz moved to Brown University, and helped coordinate a national recruiting effort that resulted in the greatest four-year period in Brown University Men’s basketball history. The program posted a 63-45 overall record from 20002004, and also produced an Ivy League record of 39-17 in that same time frame, while also producing All Ivy and academic All Ivy players.
