2016 VOLLEYBALL SEASON PREVIEW There is a ton of excitement back in the gym as Coast Guard looks to continue to improve on where it left off last year when the team finished 19-10 overall and 5-5 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Bears return five key players from last year’s team, but are still fairly young and must replace some key players lost to graduation. “We want to get Coast Guard volleyball back to where we know it should be,” said head coach Mike Bynon, who enters his second season. “ We took steps last year, we had ups and downs as we pushed the limit of what we were able to do and hopefully this year we can be more consistent and work hard and be physical each and every day to get where we want to be.” Bynon is looking for the team to improve in one area in particular in the 2016 season. “One of the things we needed to do was improve offensively and not only through recruiting, but with the work our players did in the spring,” said Bynon. “We struggled to put balls away and finish points and I’m happy with I have seen so far in the preseason.
Rounding out the junior class is Michelle McGill, who returns as the starting libero. McGill is a flashy player with a great work ethic and has worked to become more consistent this year. She covers a lot of court and flips the switch when it’s game time. Last year, she played in 100 sets, led the team with 370 digs and was second on the team with 34 service aces. “We are so excited that we still have two full seasons with this junior class along with the young talent that we have added,” said Bynon. Sophomore tri-captain Hailye Reynolds will take over as the Bears setter this season. “She brings an unreal consistency with her character and leadership and there were times last year that we would put her in just to see people smile again,” said Bynon. “She is a student of the game and we need that as the quarterback of our team.” The Bears have a trio of freshmen that will make an immediate impact on the program in outside hitter Angelou Dunton, middle blocker Alexi Deane and outside hitter and defensive specialist Ali Gates.
The Bears are looking for a huge year out of middle blocker tri-captain Susan West, the only senior on the team. She appeared in 94 sets and was second on the team with 248 kills last season to go with 217 digs, 29 blocks and 23 aces.
“Dunton is excited to be here and we are lucky to have a kid of this quality and character in our program,” said Bynon. “I have known about Angelou from the first day I took this job last year. We knew what kind of person she was and when she got in the gym she blew our expectations out of the water, so we are excited to see what she brings to our team.”
“She has come out of her shell, become a vocal leader and I believe could be one of the best outside hitters in the NEWMAC, which has some pretty impressive players at that position,” said Bynon.
Deane will be the Bears answer to replace All-conference is our answer to replace Dumont. She can hit all positions in the front row and she will be used in a lot of different way this season.
The Bears junior class will be the strength of the team as four key players return.
Both Dunton and Deane will be expected to help as the Bears look to improve offensive output this season
Right side hitter tri-captain Emma Saunders, who was very up and down with her offensive output last season has gotten stronger, has another year of maturity and has taken a leadership role and will be a very big piece of what the team is trying to do this season. She registered 102 kills a year ago in 75 sets played.
Gates will see quality time off the bench this season. She has played a high level of volleyball and is ready to step into the college game.
Outside hitter Summer Adams continues to improve everyday she is in the gym after recording 167 kills and 127 digs in 94 sets last season.

Middle blocker Madison Scott, who at times last year was unstoppable, will be counted on to bolster the middle this season as the Bears will probably have someone young playing opposite of her in the middle. Scott played in all 104 sets last season and had 224 kills while leading the team with 89 blocks and 35 service aces.
“We wanted to improve the talent in the gym and make our schedule tougher to prepare us for conference play and we have done those things,” said Bynon. “I felt like at times last year our toughest matches were our NEWMAC matches and they will be again, however we have closed that gap between conference a non-conference matches and we are very excited about that. It is so hard night in and night out to win in this conference, where every coach has done a great job and every single team improves each season.” “There is a consistency and stability within the program that has not been here in awhile,” added Bynon. “That’s a credit to the kids in how much they trusted us as a coaching staff and it’s been fun since I arrived here last year and it’s exciting to see where we are going.”

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT SECOND YEAR Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles. Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant. Rear Admiral Rendon is a surface operations specialist with a diverse list of assignments over his 28 year Coast Guard officer

career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida. Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House. Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia. A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SIXTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his sixth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships. ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.
Shaakira Hassell
Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her second season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team practice squad.

MIKE BYNON HEAD COACH MICHAEL.W.BYNON@USCGA.EDU SECOND SEASON Mike Bynon is in his second season as head coach of the volleyball team. Bynon was an assistant at Williams College for two seasons (2013 & 2014) as the Ephs posted a record of 55-10 including a record of 24-2 in New England Small College Athletic Confererence (NESCAC) matches and won a pair of NESCAC championships earning back-to-back NCAA tournament berths. The Ephs advanced to the Elite 8 last season and the Sweet 16 in 2013. A graduate of Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Bynon was the libero for a team which made three NCAA Final Four appearances and played in the inaugural NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Championship Game in 2012.He earned second team AVCA All-America honors in 2012 and is the all-time leader in digs at Carthage. Upon graduation, he served as a graduate assistant for both the men’s and women’s teams at his alma mater before moving onto Williams. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with a minor in Health and he is currently completing his Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on Physical Education and Health at MCLA.
ASHLEY COYLE ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON
Coyle is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Coast Guard volleyball team. She was an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University for two years prior to coming to the Academy. Coyle was a three-time AVCA All-America at Cortland State was the team captain during her senior season. She was one of the premier outside hitters in the nation, leading her team to three SUNYAC titles and NCAA Regional Championship appearances. She was named the East Region’s Player of the Year as she led the Red Dragons to the Elite 8 in 2011.

ASHLEYGILLON DUMONT MAURA ATHLETIC TRAINER SECOND YEAR Maura is in her second year as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. She has been an athletic trainer for ten years. Maura comes to the Academy from William J. Dean Technical High School in Holyoke, Mass. where she provided injury prevention, evaluation and rehabilitation for varsity and junior varsity athletic teams. Prior to that she was the athletic trainer at The Marvelwood School in Kent, Conn. for five years, and was also a science teacher and residential faculty member. She also spent her summers working for Gamebreaker/Warrior Lacrosse Camps. In 2002, Maura graduated from Alfred University with B.S. in Athletic Training. Maura also earned a Master’s of Education in Kinesiology and Physical Education with an emphasis in exercise physiology. While at Maine she worked in the cardiac rehabilitation and wellness department at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Currently, she is pursuing her doctorate in sports management from the United States Sports Academy.
