How a Journalist, Teacher and Fresh College Grad Found Financial Freedom Through Fitness
Prashanthi Musapet, Rumble Boxing
Raquel Hernandez, CycleBar
Every January, millions of Americans resolve to live healthier lives by joining a gym or starting a new fitness routine. “New Year, new me,” as the saying goes. And those who stick with their resolutions will indeed feel renewed by the physical and mental health benefits of exercise. Beyond the physical and mental, the fitness industry also offers incredible professional and financial benefits for entrepreneurs seeking a new business venture. Just ask Prashanthi Musapet, Raquel Hernandez and Ashley Allen. These women made a resolution to be their own bosses by opening different boutique fitness franchises. In turn, they have made an undeniable impact on their local communities and found empowerment, joy and financial freedom.
Prashanthi Musapet Musapet is the owner of Rumble Boxing in Livingston, NJ. Her path to fitness franchising is a winding one, as she worked in broadcast media for 15 years before discovering Rumble. Originally from Oklahoma, Musapet found a job at the NBC affiliate station in Tulsa after graduating college. She worked her way up from assignment desk editor, answering phones and uncovering breaking news to web producer. From Tulsa, Musapet moved to New Jersey, where she became a TV producer for a small South Asian TV station and eventually News12 New Jersey in 2010. Musapet had always been interested in fitness, but her passion was ignited in 2015 when she joined a local boxing gym as a member. In fact, she enjoyed the workout so much that she ended up producing a News12 segment featuring the kickboxing gym. She continued to showcase the gym in later fitness segments and 10 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
Ashley Allen, Pure Barre
became an instructor, eventually finding her way to Rumble in 2019 and immediately falling in love with the brand’s workout. In 2020, Musapet found herself at a crossroads as she had recently gotten engaged and the pandemic was emerging. She no longer wanted to be a journalist due to the erratic work schedule and frequent travel, so she started looking for a new career opportunity. While looking for a new role, she thought about Rumble as a potential career shift and soon realized that Xponential Brands had recently acquired the boxing concept and were franchising. After discussions with her family and husband, everybody thought franchising with Rumble would be a great opportunity, and she signed on as a franchisee in the summer of 2021. Since opening the doors of Rumble Livingston in August 2022, Musapet and her team have grown the studio to around 370 members, making it one of the brand’s best-performing locations. While Musapet follows the franchise blueprint laid out by the Rumble Corporate Team and Xponential, she leans into her journalism experience to allow her studio to shine. With a talent for editing video content, she helps craft fun and engaging videos for social media, some of which are even being used by Rumble studios in Australia. She was also the first Rumble franchisee to partner with an animal shelter and hosted a pet adoption event to celebrate the Livingston studio’s first anniversary. “Do not let anyone tell you that you can’t do it,” said Musapet. “There is always a way around the word ‘no’. If one door closes and another closes, go through the window! Go through the doggy door! There are many ways to reach your goals. Never take no for an answer or accept it as final.”
Raquel Hernandez Hernandez went from running a 4th-grade classroom of 30+ children to running five small businesses in Southern California.
Hernandez’s initial foray into franchising was with Amazing Lash Studios, and she has since opened three locations of that brand. To diversify her portfolio, she signed on to open a pair of CycleBar studios in the Inland Empire in Southern California. CycleBar Redlands opened in 2021, followed by CycleBar Cucamonga in 2022 and both studios have quickly become standout locations. Notably, her studios are celebrating a milestone of $1 million in revenue in 2023. Hernandez credits her success in fitness franchising to her unique experience as a teacher and technology aid. “In a classroom setting, you must juggle the needs of 30+ students, which is a lot like running a business where multiple tasks, employees, and members require your attention every day,” she said. “As a teacher, I also had to have a lot of compassion and empathy for my students, which has translated really well to CycleBar, where we pride ourselves on building community and providing excellent hospitality.”
Ashley Allen Allen’s journey to fitness, and eventually franchising, started back in college at Temple University when she was looking for a workout beyond weightlifting. During her junior year, she found Pure Barre through a Craigslist ad seeking teachers and jumped on the opportunity to try a class. She was instantly hooked, and quickly entered teacher training. Being an instructor became a joyous side hustle for the rest of her time at Temple, and when it came time to graduate, Allen looked for ways to take her love of barre to the next level. She had always been interested in opening her own business, as her father owned a clothing store for many years and now operates a Takuma Boutique Hotel in Jamaica. After researching Pure Barre’s franchise opportunity and consulting with her father, she took a leap and signed on to open a studio shortly following graduation. In 2012, she opened the first Pure Barre studio in Connecticut Pure Barre Greenwich, and swiftly discovered that she had a knack for business ownership, learning to manage a team of employees and instructors and leveraging her boots-on-the-ground experience as an instructor to make her team even stronger. For six years, she successfully ran the Greenwich location and felt it was time to open a second studio as she approached 30 years old.
“I couldn’t have predicted where I’d be now, even if you showed me in a crystal ball ten years ago,” said Hernandez. “Franchising was my ticket to professional and financial freedom.” After nearly ten years of teaching grade school in San Bernardino, CA, Hernandez became a technology coach in the classroom and discovered a passion for the business side of education. That’s when she started seeking out business opportunities that would allow her to keep helping others while tapping into her experience as an educator, which led her to the beauty and fitness industry.
In 2019, she opened Pure Barre White Plains in the suburbs of New York City, and despite the challenges that pandemic threw her way in 2020, both studios are still thriving to this day. Even as she juggles the demands of multi-unit franchise ownership, she still manages to teach 10+ classes a week. “Teaching is my first love, and 13 years later, I still enjoy teaching just as much as I did on day one,” said Allen. “When you’re running a fitness studio, you have to be truly passionate about every aspect of the business. Most definitely the workout, but also your staff, the members, and even the retail. That’s what leads to success.” To learn more about Xponential’s family of brands, visit www.xponential.com/franchising Franchising MAGAZINE USA 11
expert advice: Evan Hackel | Founder and CEO of Ingage Consulting, and CEO of Tortal Training
Four Opportunities to Improve Your Training only 20% of your employees were native Spanish speakers when you designed your training and today, that percentage has risen to 40%. Changes like those are not threats. They are opportunities to increase the productivity of your employees with a training investment that pays a significant ROI on every training dollar you spend.
Your Employees Are 2 Now Working in Multiple Locations Many franchises assume that while most businesses had remote workforces during the Covid-19 epidemic, their franchises didn’t. Is that really the case in your franchise?
Many franchises seem to undervalue the benefits of training. The reason could be that they don’t realize that every dollar spent on training can offer a tremendous ROI. Training can quadruple sales, supercharge customer satisfaction, and repeat business, result in much higher employee retention, and offer an amazing return on investment. Every dollar you spend could put $4.00, $5.00 or more in your pocket. It is hard to think of another investment that offers ROI that comes anywhere close to that.
12 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
Let’s explore some opportunities you might have overlooked.
Your Workforce Has 1 Changed, But Your Training Hasn’t How has your workforce changed since you designed your current training
programs? Has it been one year, two
years, five years or more? If you look at
your employees today, you could find that when you designed your training, only
10% of your workers were millennials but that today, 60% of them are. Or maybe
Let’s say that you are a retailer that had two stores five years ago, but that you now have 10 stores in five states – yet your training has not been updated. That is not an unusual situation. If similar changes have taken place in your company, it could be time to consider delivering your training to a more widely distributed workforce using mobile technology. One effective way to deliver training to franchise owners and employees in multiple locations is to start delivering your training on mobile devices. Mobile training lets you train more people, wherever they are, without really spending more money.
You’ve Accepted the Idea 3 that Some Problems Just Can’t Be Fixed Have you developed blind spots and agreed to live with substandard results in one or two key areas? Maybe you don’t have enough repeat customers, or you are getting
negative reviews online. Or perhaps your field technicians do a “pretty good” job of servicing the equipment you sell – they could be doing a little bit better – but hey, that’s good enough, right? Companies that fall into that pattern are often missing a chance to increase profits by training their employees more effectively. Let’s say that you are a retail franchise that earns $2 million a year from sales on the selling floor. If you can train your salespeople to sell only 10% more on an average transaction – a goal that can be very effectively reached through training – that means that you have the potential to increase your sales by $200,000 by making a training investment that costs a lot less than that. Training cannot solve all problems. But if you are living with unsolved, nagging shortfalls, turn your attention to training.
You’re Facing High 4 Turnover and Low Worker Satisfaction This is another area where “good enough” thinking can cost you more money than
Evan Hackel, As author, speaker and entrepreneur, Evan has been instrumental in launching more than 20 businesses and has managed a portfolio of brands with systemwide sales of more than $5 billion. He is the creator of Ingaged Leadership, is author of the book Ingaging Leadership Meets the Younger Generation and is a thought leader in the fields of leadership and success. you realize. For example, it is tempting to think “All these young workers today have low loyalty, they’re not going to stick around anyway, so why throw away money to train them?” Effective training plays an excessively big role in increasing employee retention. When workers know how to do their jobs better, they experience less frustration and stay longer. When your commissioned salespeople sell more and increase their income, they value their jobs more and are more hesitant to leave. And of course, well-trained employees add more income to your bottom line while they are with you. Because they stay with you longer, you don’t have to spend money to recruit
and train their replacements. It is another example of how a modest investment in training can pay you very big returns for every dollar you spend.
So, Is “Good Enough” Good Enough for Your Franchise? Chances are that you would never say that your products are “good enough,” that your advertising is “good enough” or that your company reputation is “good enough.” Why should you settle for “good enough” for your franchise training? Lots of new things are happening in business as 2024 begins. Shouldn’t your training be new – and absolutely terrific – too?

Premium Service Brands Launches Inclusive Employment Initiative meaningful opportunities for adults with disabilities,” Flick shared. “Our new program will give individuals in the special needs community a chance to contribute, grow, and find fulfillment.”
Paul Flick Chief Executive of Premium Service Brands
In an inspiring leap forward for corporate inclusivity, Premium Service Brands (PSB) is launching a new program at its Charlottesville, Virginia, headquarters by hiring an adult from the special needs community. The initiative reflects PSB’s commitment to diversity and marks a significant stride in redefining workplace inclusivity in the franchising industry.
A Personal Mission for PSB’s CEO For Paul Flick, chief executive of PSB, the new program is more than just a corporate responsibility — it’s a personal mission. Flick’s 15-year-old daughter, Anne, has special needs. Anne is currently thriving in the ninth grade at Oakland School and has a passion for babysitting. “As the father of a special needs child, I understand the importance of providing 14 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
Including an adult with disabilities on the PSB team is expected to bring a fresh perspective and enrich the company’s culture. PSB expects the new program to strengthen employee morale and enhance the work environment. The presence of employees with disabilities often enhances a culture of empathy, understanding, and teamwork among all staff and helps solidify a supportive workplace. “Diversity in the workplace fosters creativity, innovation, and empathy,” explained Vivi Nellen, PSB’s vice president of communications. “We’re excited to welcome our new team members and learn from their unique experiences and insights.” PSB is the franchisor of nine home services brands, including 360° Painting, ProLift Garage Doors, Maid Right, and Window Gang.
The new initiative is an extension of the home services franchisor’s non-profit arm, Kids-Lift, which has been instrumental in supporting local communities. KidsLift focuses on ensuring all children have equal opportunities. It partners with PSB’s franchise owners across the United States and Canada to give back, addressing poverty and hunger by hosting food and clothing drives, fulfilling teacher wish lists, and upgrading kid-focused facilities. PSB’s new hiring program marks a natural progression of the Kids-Lift mission by expanding its impact to include adults with disabilities and providing them with meaningful employment opportunities.
Preparing for the Launch To ensure the success of this program, PSB tapped the knowledge and experience of Reagan Stillerman of Stillerman Consulting Group. EXPERT ADVICE: George Knauf | Senior Franchise Business Advisor | FranChoice
Skip College, Open a Franchise In today’s ever-evolving economic landscape, the traditional pathway of attending college to secure a prosperous future is increasingly being re-evaluated. With rising tuition costs and a competitive job market, many individuals are exploring alternative avenues to achieve financial success and personal fulfillment.
One such avenue is investing in a franchise, which can offer tangible financial benefits, real-world business experience, and a level of autonomy that a college education may not provide. Understanding the Financial Dynamics The cost of college education has skyrocketed over the past few decades. According to the Education Data Initiative, the average annual cost for a four-year private college can exceed $58,840 per year living on campus. And once student loan interest and loss of income 16 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
is considered, the total cost for that piece of paper can easily exceed $500,000. For families with multiple children this can end up in the Millions of dollars fast! In contrast, investing in a franchise can offer a more direct path to financial return, career security and generational wealth. The initial investment for a franchise varies significantly depending on the brand and industry but can be comparable to or even less than the cost of a four-year college degree. Unlike college tuition, which also does not guarantee financial returns, a franchise investment puts you directly into the business world, with the potential for immediate revenue generation.
Immediate Application of Skills and Knowledge College education, while valuable, often provides theoretical knowledge and skills that may not directly translate into practical business acumen. In contrast, owning a franchise allows individuals to apply business concepts in real-time. Franchisees learn valuable skills such as management, accounting, marketing, and customer service – all in a practical setting. This hands-on experience can be incredibly beneficial for personal and professional growth.
Built-in Brand Recognition and Support One of the most significant advantages

situation. Owning a franchise, on the other hand, offers a level of autonomy and flexibility. As a franchise owner, you can make decisions that directly impact your business, tailor your work schedule to fit your lifestyle, and potentially achieve a work-life balance that suits your personal needs.
Potential for Financial Growth and Stability The ultimate goal of a college education is often to secure a stable, well-paying job. However, the current job market can be unpredictable, and there is no guarantee of employment post-graduation. In contrast, a successful franchise can provide not only a steady income but also the potential for significant financial growth. The scalability of franchises allows owners to expand their business, open multiple locations, and increase their earnings over time.
Flexibility and Autonomy Pursuing higher education often means adhering to a rigid schedule and curriculum, which may not align with every individual’s learning style or life
Before the business of higher education set in, we learned business from others and by doing. While there are jobs in the sciences and medicine that I would agree need time in classrooms. I learned more from having P&L responsibility over a multi-million dollar business than I did in any classroom. My degree only came up in the interview for my first job, it has never come up again in the past 30 years.
Owning a franchise can offer a sense of personal fulfillment that goes beyond financial success. Franchisees often become integral parts of their local communities, providing services, creating jobs, and contributing to the local economy. This can lead to a sense of pride and accomplishment that is deeply rewarding.
While college education continues to be a valuable path for many, the option of investing in a franchise presents a compelling alternative. With the potential for immediate financial returns, practical skill development, brand support, autonomy, and personal fulfillment, buying a franchise can be a smart investment in today’s dynamic economic environment. It offers a unique blend of business ownership and guided entrepreneurship that can pave the way for both financial success and personal growth.
Moreover, the franchising model allows individuals to align their business with their passions and interests. Whether it’s a love for food, fitness, education, or any other field, there is likely a franchise that fits. This alignment of personal interests with professional pursuits can lead to greater job satisfaction and a fulfilling career.
In conclusion, for those weighing the options between a traditional college education and alternative career paths, considering the purchase of a franchise might be a prudent decision. It offers a practical, hands-on approach to business and entrepreneurship, often leading to rewarding personal and professional experiences.
Personal Fulfillment and Community Impact of buying a franchise is the benefit of an established brand. Unlike starting a business from scratch, a franchise comes with brand recognition, a loyal customer base, and a proven business model. This can mitigate many of the risks associated with starting a new business. Additionally, most franchisors offer extensive training programs, ongoing support, and a network of fellow franchisees, providing a safety net that is often unavailable to new business owners.
Before the explosion of higher education with The Industrial Revolution, where a degree was used as a way for companies to sort the field of job applicants, most of America in those pre-corporate times were self employed or business owners. By 1900 that was about 50%, by 1970 that had dropped to 7.3%. But franchising is reversing that trend and by this year we are up to 10% and growing fast.

Leveraging Corporate-Owned Locations to Optimize Operations Across Franchise Network Evolving consumer preferences have created a more dynamic and competitive market across the restaurant industry, which has made staying ahead of the curve essential. New technologies, real estate designs, and processes are all practical elements that we’ve seen brands adopt to optimize operations. Still, ensuring compatibility and consistent success is important before incorporating them across an entire franchise system.
Brian Wise COO of Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers 20 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
At Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, we utilize our corporateowned locations to test and confirm if a new element fits our franchise network
and will positively impact our operators’ bottom line. Our brand has continued to grow rapidly across the country. Most recently, we opened our 500th location and signed development agreements to add new units to our growth pipeline in new and existing markets. Investing in corporate-owned locations and utilizing them as testing grounds for new innovations provides us with an opportunity to identify new ways to improve in areas we value most: Quality, genuine hospitality, and cleanliness. Here are a few of the areas we evaluate to see how they will contribute to our franchisees’ success, all while maintaining the timeless traditions our loyal guests continue to return for.
is performing both in the front and back of the house, all to meet our guests’ needs. Through our restaurant design, we’ve implemented new technology like Accutemp’s XLR8 kitchen technology, which presses Freddy’s steakburger patties into a consistent shape each time, making grill operations less physically demanding while increasing consistency for guests. Additionally, the restaurant’s designated digital pickup area has a custard freezer to give quick access to mobile and delivery orders without interfering with the dine-in order queue.
Operations Processes Restaurant Design Having a variety of effective real estate designs available for franchisees to consider provides them with flexibility and opportunities to open restaurants in the most promising locations available within their respective markets. It also allows operators to invest in formats that align with current consumer behavior. This year, we introduced our latest prototype by opening a new corporate-owned location in Bellville, Illinois, which is more efficient for off-premises dining while still offering a friendly dine-in atmosphere. We moved forward with this specific design after recognizing the increased number of guests choosing to order through their mobile app, third-party delivery services or our drive-thru. This shift has continued over the years and has resulted in nearly 70 percent of our system’s sales coming from off-premises.
Since launching the new format in Belleville, we’ve seen greater order accuracy, which results in higher guest satisfaction. The features of the new prototype allow us to ensure guests are experiencing Freddy’s genuine hospitality through every order mode they choose. The leaner build of the restaurant design also results in a smaller footprint, and we’re finding real estate more readily available. The insights serve as a guide to help communicate to franchisees how it can drive sales should they decide to invest.
Updated Technology Across the industry, we’ve seen technology play a pivotal role in streamlining various aspects of restaurant operations, such as simplifying the ordering process, improving accuracy, and increasing access and convenience. Our team at Freddy’s has carefully reviewed how our technology
Beyond technology and the overall restaurant design, the increasing demand for food delivery and take-out also emphasizes the importance of revising operational processes. For example, to streamline efficiency overall, we’ve recently transformed the bagging station with a simplified, easy-to-interpret display and a shared expo counter to give the shift lead the ability to manage every aspect of the operation from one location. Once proven successful, it’s critical for brands to develop a communications plan to explain updates to franchisees. Change can be difficult, but testing prior to the rollout allows us to provide franchisees with ROI and operational best practices to help them and their teams through the change. It’s all about proof of concept and data, and the best way to showcase results is by pointing to the success of corporate locations over a period of time with regular updates incorporated.

franchisor in depth: SoVita Chiropractic Center
SoVita Chiropractic Center
Redefines Patient Care and Practice Ownership system catering to an incredible professional pool of practitioners looking to realize their dream of helping people naturally, without using drugs or surgery.
Dr. Karlos Boghosian Founder of SoVita Chiropractic Center
“Like any sustainable business, the success of a chiropractic office is measured by its growth. Whether practitioners evaluate that growth based on revenue, patient volume, retention, or a combination of factors, it is vital to maintain objectivity,” said Dr. Karlos Boghosian, founder of SoVita Chiropractic Center. As a practicing chiropractor and industry leader, Dr. Boghosian imagined a system that addresses areas where chiropractic practices fall short in its success. “With a systems-based outlook, we can identify the root cause of stunted growth and debug the underlying issues for optimal performance while positioning our chiropractic practice for longevity in a competitive industry. More importantly, we can institute a level of efficiency and infrastructure that ultimately will pave the way for greater freedom and flexibility,” he said. From this desire and acute business acumen, Dr. Boghosian launched the SoVita Chiropractic Center franchise 22 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
“Having created a very successful, high volume chiropractic office in Hartford that focuses on personalized, high quality, patient-focused care plans for patients, combined that with a successful business plan, made us realize we had something special, and we wanted others who are passionate of chiropractic services to have the same opportunity and success to serve patients,” he added. The SoVita Chiropractic Center franchise system is designed explicitly with high quality patient focused care while helping chiropractors and owners expand their business. We aim to provide our patients with the highest quality chiropractic services and increased value. A significant part of the SoVita system is its continuous study, training, experimentation, and innovation that helps raise patient care standards.
SoVita exists at the intersection of structure, operations, and patient care “In chiropractic, we tell our patients that structure determines function. The same concept applies to your practice. Forming
a proper foundation will set the stage for long-term growth. A chiropractor’s standing and expertise will play a formative role in a practice’s reputation. However, quality care and efficiency should inform its legacy,” said Dr. Boghosian. The long-term benefits of a systems-based operation mirror those of proper structure because that operation sets the stage for growth over time. Additionally, it allows chiropractors to take a step back from day-to-day operations. With systems and infrastructure in place, chiropractors can develop a self-sustaining practice whose reputation hinges on performance excellence.
Addressing the Cause, Not the Symptom As with practicing any type of health or clinical care, running a business requires the mindset of solving the root cause of a problem, not its symptoms. For example, if a patient walks into his doctor’s office with a pebble in his shoe and excruciating foot pain, a pain reliever will not solve the problem – removing the pebble does. By prescribing medication for foot pain, the doctor addressed the symptom rather than the root cause. Had they removed the pebble in the patient’s shoe, they would have fully resolved the patient’s issue.
About SoVita Chiropractic Center: A mission driven organization that strives to be America’s most patient centered chiropractic institution presents qualified chiropractic owners with a franchised model for systems-based practice management. Chiropractors receive the support and guidance they need to identify the root cause of underperformance and debug that area with streamlined operations and infrastructure.
Dr. Boghosian shared SoVita’s secret sauce because he believes it is rooted in the core functions of proper business operations and strategies that have been successfully tested. Such an oversight is common among chiropractors as they evaluate their practice as a business. They may devote time, money, and energy to refining a single area of their practice — marketing strategies, hiring practices, or new patient acquisition — yet they see no signs of growth or profitability. Zeroing in on one aspect of a chiropractic practice without conducting a root cause analysis is equivalent to taking a drug to mask a symptom. Chiropractors must objectively consider the genesis of operational deficiencies or slowed growth as they analyze their practice. Then, they can diagnose and debug their practice most efficiently. “The SoVita model helped create a diagnostic template that can be tailored to an individual’s practice. The template must be comprehensive and focused, covering all the critical bases of the business and only those bases without requiring any waste of time or resources on less important matters. It also should lend itself to easy communication and action,” said Dr. Boghosian. Proper infrastructure consists of specialized departments featuring
individuals with specific skills and know-how. Business development has the communication skills and know-how to engage a potential patient and yield a particular product — the moment when someone who had no prior interest in chiropractic care decides to visit the clinic for a consultation. Business owners can accomplish this through public relations, social media, and digital marketing, as well as through various community outreach efforts, including lectures, fundraisers, sponsorships, and corporate health education programs. All departments help shape a patient’s experience. When practice owners understand the most effective means of yielding their “products,” the collective impact of a clinic is far more significant. Furthermore, categorizing by department gives chiropractors a clear starting point to assess their practices. Rather than taking on the task of overhauling all processes, they can use key performance indicators to measure the quality of each department’s specific products objectively, identify the source of underperformance, and take appropriate action.
“Chiropractic clinic owners are more than just doctors; they are business owners, too. Effective practice management requires an executive mindset,” he said. From the SoVita franchise playbook, Dr. Boghosian suggests the following actions for establishing and maintaining a successful practice – all attributes of the franchise system he built. • Know-how to develop departments within the organization • Understand the significance of assigning a specific product to each department • Objectively assess the quality of those products using specific key performance indicators • Leverage data to create systems-based solutions “This approach that we’ve harnessed in SoVita Chiropractic Centers can pave the way for systemic change within our industry, leading to more successful practices helping more people achieve happier, healthier lives,” concluded Dr. Boghosian. have your say: Office Evolution
How Office Evolution is Reshaping the Future of Workspaces and Franchising Over the last few years, entrepreneurs have experienced a surge in costly lease agreements and corporate workers have struggled to work from home due to hybrid scheduling and frequent distractions. However, Office Evolution® has proven to be an ideal solution. With our network of business centers strategically located throughout the nation, Office Evolution offers convenient and affordable business environments for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Office Evolution, a member of the Vast Coworking Group™, offers multiple plans, including a popular flex plan that is heavily utilized by remote workers. We are 32 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
passionate about supporting small business owners – the Dreamers, Risk-Takers, and Doers who dare to chase their passions. By partnering with local owners through franchising, Office Evolution leverages franchise partners who want to invest in and operate their own Office Evolution coworking space. With over 80 locations, local franchisees can customize their coworking spaces to better suit the needs of specific communities. Combatting Burnout The pervasive issue of burnout is a genuine concern. Numerous small business owners and employees report enduring long hours and feeling constrained by the lack of flexibility, which ultimately affects their overall job satisfaction. Coworking sets itself apart by granting individuals control over their working hours and routines, making it easier to combat burnout. Many organizations have already reported a significant reduction in employee resignations due to burnout, thanks to the availability of coworking as an alternative work arrangement. A visit to an Office Evolution location will allow you to experience firsthand how you can work fewer hours and achieve peak productivity. Similarly, franchise owners partnering with Office Evolution play a pivotal role in mitigating burnout and promoting a work-life balance within their local communities. quality time with family or work during their peak hours, coworkers have the freedom to craft work schedules that align with their priorities. A contented worker is undeniably a more productive one. Similarly, entrepreneurs get a better worklife balance as opposed to working directly in their homes. The essence of coworking lies in leveraging the flexibility it offers, resulting in happier and more productive individuals.

franchisor in depth: Fully Promoted
How Fully Promoted Helps Client Companies with Employee Retention According to benchmarking data from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), many employers estimate the total cost of hiring a new employee to be three to four times the position’s salary. That means that if you are hiring for a job that pays $60,000, you may spend $180,000 or more to fill that role. This is when you account for recruiting costs (paying for premium memberships on Indeed or LinkedIn or hiring an actual recruiter); resources and valuable time lost to onboarding and training the new employee; impact on overall productivity; the emotional toll of vetting and interviewing numerous candidates; the cost of competition; and more. When you consider this data from SHRM and economic trends like The Great Resignation that we are still feeling the impact of today, employee retention has become more important than ever before and should be a primary initiative for companies in 2024 and beyond.
34 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
At Fully Promoted, we have helped countless client companies spanning all industries, sectors, and sizes, attract and retain their employees. Here’s how: Providing Localized Marketing Expertise While our tagline is branded apparel and promotional products, Fully Promoted serves a far greater function for our client companies than the tangible items we distribute. At our core, we are a B2B marketing strategy facilitator for various businesses and organizations, and we help our client companies attract, retain, and engage with their customers and employees. Our brand is made up of approximately 270 individually owned and operated franchise locations, each of which are run by a local entrepreneur. Our franchise owners are not only ingrained in their local communities but also have a true understanding of local business needs. In a business like ours, this hyperlocal connection is tremendously beneficial in driving impact and results because our franchise owners live and work in the communities they serve and are neighbors with their clients. The Fully Promoted franchise network is made up of real people providing real
products and real results. Our local experts and consultants lend their expertise and strategic counsel to other businesses in their communities. When it comes to employee retention, employee safety, or other initiatives that our client companies are focusing on, we’re able to provide personalized recommendations and an experience that simply can’t be matched by our competitors.
Assisting in the Development of Employee Retention Programs Despite the staggering data shown above, many companies don’t have a consistent employee retention program or strategies in place to help them keep their top talent. In a tight and highly competitive labor market, this is a tremendous area of opportunity to not only keep valuable team members
but prevent an avoidable (and expensive) disruption in business. We know that employee retention is increased through recognition and reward, and that’s what Fully Promoted does through our products. We work with our client companies to develop an ongoing cadence for employee recognition and reward, and we lend our expertise in determining which products and strategies will resonate most. Whether it is instituting an ongoing awards program on a monthly or quarterly basis; giving discounts to local restaurants or an extra PTO day timed to a relevant holiday or week; or simply gifting products like a branded phone case, a higher-end pen, a leather decanter for wine, etc., there are numerous ways to reward excellent employees throughout the year.
Branding Products & Curating Kits While branding is important for awareness and recognition among customers, competitors, and industry peers, it is equally if not more important among employees when it comes to engagement and retention. Engaged employees feel included and a sense of pride working for their company and are more likely to stay. We work with our client companies to customize awards and curate kits containing products that not only showcase the brand of a company, but also cater to what their employees want.
Employees – both in-person and remote – want to feel appreciated, valued, and invested in and that can be translated through the right products. Quality is key here, and we’ve seen an increase in order volume of premium products that are a step up from the status quo. For example, an employee is sure to feel more appreciated and valued if they’re gifted a TravisMathew polo over a Gildan t-shirt or a Stanley tumbler over a non-insulated water bottle.
At Fully Promoted, we’re not just pushing products; we’re providing solutions. We strive to deepen the pride that employees feel for their individual roles and the companies they’re working for. Employees are a driving force of our clients’ success and it’s important that their contributions be recognized.
Our products and kits can be customized based on a client and their employees’ wants and needs. Whether it is a gift box timed around a special day or week like National Nurses Week; a holiday basket with higher-end items like a name-brand polo or leather decanter for wine; or an award for top salesperson or best customer service, we offer an array of solutions increase engagement and a sense of connection.
Helping Employees “Live The Brand” Employees can be the greatest brand ambassadors for a company when they feel appreciated, valued, and engaged. With all our client companies, our goal is to make the brand come alive and employees are a great way to do that. “Living the brand” goes beyond writing with a company-branded pen on a company-branded notepad. Are your employees representing your company outside of the workplace or beyond their desk? Do they feel like they’re part of the team/family? Are they sharing in each other’s successes?

franchisee in action: Caring Transitions
Achieving the American Dream with Franchising, Caring Transitions and the E-2 Visa opportunity to apply for an E-2 Visa — an option that allows individuals from treaty countries to invest in U.S.-based businesses and a pathway tailor-made for aspiring franchisees. From there, it was all about finding the right franchise. Enter Caring Transitions: the 300-unit concept that helps seniors and families organize personal property and manage the moving process during stressful life events, with the goal of assisting them in regaining control, personal time and peace of mind. “We wanted our business abroad to be more than just a money-making venture — we wanted to make an impact and help people,” said Rebecca.
Rebecca and Andre Ogorzolka, a new franchisee couple with Caring Transitions in North Carolina, are a prime example of how franchising can be a great entry point into American citizenship. When Rebecca and Andre Ogorzolka moved from Germany to the United States, their goal was more than a geographical shift — it was a dream to enrich their community while securing a prosperous future for their family. Multi-Unit Sylvan Learning Franchisees Awarded Three Territories in Florida Nation’s Leading Provider of Supplemental, Enrichment Education Resells Territories in Doctor Phillips, Kissimmee and Ocoee
Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of supplemental and enrichment education for K–12 students with more than 710 locations worldwide, transferred ownership of the Doctor Phillips, Kissimmee and Ocoee, Florida territories to Kent Kolbow and co-owner Sarah Miller. Prior to his franchising journey with Sylvan, Kolbow obtained multiple degrees and fully intended to work for NASA. While working as a substitute teacher with Sylvan in 1991, his career goals shifted after witnessing the direct impact he was having on students’ academic journeys. “I remember receiving a letter from a student one day saying that he passed his first math test…ever,” Kolbow explained. “At that moment I thought, ‘This is what I want to do. This is how I want to feel for the rest of my life.’” Kolbow began franchising with Sylvan in 1998 with two centers in South Bend and 40 Franchising MAGAZINE USA

After Sarah Miller joined as a director in 2010, they teamed up as cofranchise owners to grow the brand to 11 centers in the state and one in Florida. “It’s been such a rewarding experience to serve so many students across our centers, and now we get to replicate that influence across Florida,” said Kolbow. “Over the years, Sarah and I have created well-oiled systems and processes that, in conjunction with Sylvan’s support, have made it possible to scale our operations at this current pace. Our goal is to have success with every student, and there is no shortage of demand in this educational climate.” Miller came to Sylvan from the nonprofit sector where she focused on serving at-risk youth. To her, Sylvan was a way to continue working toward this overarching mission in a slightly different way. “We have the rare opportunity to reach a wide variety of students across Indiana and Florida — from elementary students who are new to the English language all the way up to high school students about to graduate who need extra support for college applications,” said Miller. “These
three territories in Florida have laid the foundation for us to be a strong partner for the local school districts and families seeking additional support for their schoolage children.” Sylvan Learning has been producing proven results for over four decades. Strategic Priorities Spotlight:
Are you feeling overwhelmed with your to-do list? You’re not alone. During a recent conversation, a client commented, “Add that to my 40 things to do today.” Let’s dive into 2 strategies that prioritize tasks and shed light on opportunities for growth and leadership development. 42 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
Color Code Your Calendar: Start by giving your calendar a visual makeover. Color code different categories of tasks for a quick overview. This simple technique helps you identify where your time is going and ensures a balance between priorities. Some use different colors to highlight task categories. Others use red and green to signify those activities they have to do versus those activities in their core genius that they get to do. Take it a step further
Which tasks directly impact our current strategic priorities? Shine a spotlight on these activities and allocate the necessary time and focus. This ensures alignment with your overarching goals.
Train and Delegate Spotlight: One measure of your leadership success is your ability to train others. Identify tasks that others can handle and those requiring training. Success means creating a team that can seamlessly take over, just like my approach with the Terrace Park Fire Department. For a more profound understanding,
embark on a 2-week time study. Shine the spotlight on:
1
Time Wasters:
Pinpoint activities that may drain your time without significant productivity. Weed out non-essential tasks, unnecessary meetings, and areas for delegation. “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.” John 6:27 KJV
2
Prioritize Tasks:
Use the time study to prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency. Ensure your high-priority activities get the attention they deserve.
3
Analyze Patterns:
Look for patterns in your time usage. Recognizing recurring themes helps you make informed decisions about optimizing your schedule. For instance, what time of the day are you most productive? When are you able to focus on details better than any other time?
4
Seek Feedback:

franchisee in action: ServiceMaster Restore
ServiceMaster Restore Franchisee Masters the Art of Multitasking Operating a single business is a demanding task. It’s even rarer to come across entrepreneurs who not only run multiple businesses successfully but also manage to find balance on the home front. Diana Cantea, a franchisee of ServiceMaster Restore, is a shining example of how women can serve as role models and inspire working mothers to reach for the stars, all while spearheading multiple businesses. Diana and her husband Marius are co-owners of several restoration and refurbishing businesses serving Yolo and Sacramento County in California. To be a one-stop-shop for disaster repairs, the couple added 1st Response Asbestos Abatements, Furniture Medic, and First Response Construction to their existing ServiceMaster Restore franchise. Marius originally launched ServiceMaster Restore in Yolo County with a partner in 2005, and after a partnership dissolution in 2006, he and Diana ran a ServiceMaster Restore location in
Oregon. However, in 2017, the couple returned to Yolo County to take over operations and revive the business. Tragically, while supporting disaster relief efforts in Texas in 2021, Marius suffered a heart attack, which led him to make the difficult decision to step down and focus on caring for their five children. Diana took over the reins of the business and has been managing its day-to-day operations ever since. Diana’s hands-on experience as a technician and her partnership with her husband Marius have been pivotal in propelling their franchise forward. Incorporating additional services like reconstruction, asbestos abatement, and Furniture Medic proved pivotal in enhancing her standing as an elite contractor within the ServiceMaster network. Today, their West Sacramento headquarters boasts a team of 33 dedicated employees, providing top-notch restoration services to the community.
The Power of Balance Diana believes the secret to successfully managing several endeavors lies in mastering the art of balance. She strives not to spread herself too thin, striking a delicate balance between her personal and professional life. The couple juggle their business responsibilities while raising their five children, who range in age from 4 to 16 years old. Central to Diana’s multitasking success is her robust partnership with her husband, which transcends the conventional financial aspects that many business collaborations rely upon. Marius is not just her life partner but also her business partner, offering unwavering support during turbulent times and a constant presence when her business commitments demand her full attention.

owner, along her husband Marius, showcases her commitment as a valuable member of our team.” Women own more than 12 million businesses in the United States, employing 10.1 million workers. Yet, only 30% of franchises are owned and operated by women, according to the International Franchise Association. Despite the challenges women face as entrepreneurs, at least 87% of female franchise owners enjoy owning and operating their businesses, a survey conducted by Franchise Business Review revealed. Diana is no exception.
“Having my husband as my partner has been a game-changer, as he provides support when I face challenges, lifts me up during difficult times, and remains a constant presence when I am unable to be fully present. Our partnership has truly made a significant impact on the success of the business,” Cantea said. Marius continues to be actively involved in the couple’s asbestos license project, making significant contributions to the franchise’s reconstruction division. He also spearheads Furniture Medic jobs whenever necessary. “Without a doubt, Marius is the most valuable asset of our company when it comes to problem resolution,” Cantea said. To be successful, Diana learned the art of setting priorities and delegating tasks effectively. As a mother and a business owner, she recognizes the importance of designating specific times for non-work commitments, ensuring she’s available for her children when they need her most. In her businesses, delegation is equally crucial for growth. Trusting others and delegating responsibilities have been necessary for her business’s expansion. “Although placing trust in others can be challenging, it enables the business to grow,” Cantea added.
Diana’s corporate partners are key collaborators, equipping her with the expertise needed to thrive. This achievement fills her with immense pride, and the unwavering partnership with ServiceMaster Restore’s corporate team fuels her continued success. Facing daunting tasks and occasional setbacks, she understands that business growth often requires investments. After establishing a strong presence in her local area for five years, expanding into a second territory became imperative. They added Sacramento County to their service area in the fall. “Since the inception of the business, we’ve dreamed of expanding into Sacramento,” Cantea said. “And now, we’re making that dream a reality.”
Strong Female Business Leader As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Diana recognizes the challenges she faces in establishing her credibility. Yet, she also acknowledges the unique advantages her perspective brings. “Diana Cantea highlights the limitless potential of female entrepreneurs in today’s competitive world,” said John Tovar, president of ServiceMaster Restore. “Her journey from technician to franchise
Her career has been punctuated by encounters with various catastrophes, from managing numerous fire claims in 2019 following the Camp Fire in California, which resulted in the towns of Paradise and Concow losing about 95% of their structures, to the winter freeze that led to an unprecedented frozen pipe crisis in Texas in 2021. Her experiences navigating these emergency situations imparted essential skills, such as understanding carrier guidelines, collaborating with adjusters, empathizing with distressed homeowners, and effectively managing crises. “These hands-on experiences have taught me invaluable lessons,” Cantea said. Part of her success lies in Diana’s ability to adapt and make tough decisions. One significant transition was her decision to put aside her ego and collaborate with insurance carriers. The strategic shift initially led to short-term profitability decreases as she adapted to their guidelines and forged partnerships with different third-party administrators. However, it ultimately resulted in significant business growth and helped create a secure and enduring work environment for her entire team. “While business growth may entail increased expenses and decreased shortterm profitability, my goal extends beyond wealth accumulation,” Cantea said. Diana’s entrepreneurial journey serves as a testament to working mothers, showcasing that ambitious goals can be achieved while maintaining a fulfilling family life. Franchising MAGAZINE USA 45

franchisor in depth: OutFit Training
OutFit Training Seeks National Expansion Through Franchising
OutFit Training – the veteran-founded, mobile outdoor fitness company, is announcing plans to expand its boutique fitness concept throughout the U.S. for the first time through franchising. The brand is excited to introduce its technology-enabled mobile group fitness, personal training, and corporate wellness offerings to more local communities -- all at a fraction of the cost of traditional fitness studios. Having first established itself as Florida’s leading outdoor fitness program in 2021, OutFit Training has now expanded to Atlanta, Georgia and has added locations within its home market of Fort Lauderdale. OutFit is expanding across the South and will be opening franchise locations in select Western states in 2024. OutFit Training was founded in 2021 in the Fort Lauderdale area by Randy Hetrick, a Navy SEAL veteran who served his country for more than 14 years. Throughout his military career, Hetrick was deployed on missions around the world, where access to physical training equipment was extremely limited. While deployed on a counterpiracy operation he devised an ingenious harness, leveraging bodyweight as resistance, that would ultimately transform the fitness industry. In 2004, he founded TRX -- the company that would commercialize his invention, TRX Suspension Trainer, and transform it into one of the most popular exercise systems on the planet. During the succeeding 16 years, Hetrick built TRX into one of the best loved global brands in fitness. Along the way, he recognized that while the industry had an endless 52 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
supply of indoor boutique studios of all types, it lacked even a single reliable mobile fitness provider to the great outdoors. This sparked the idea for what would become the OutFit Training: a technology-enabled mobile fitness network providing outdoor group and personal training services. In 2020, Hetrick sold TRX to private equity and left to pursue his innovative mobile training concept. In 2021 he formed a new company and registered a trademark for the name, OutFit, and the franchise that is now changing the landscape of fitness was born. “What sets us apart is how OutFit Training lets fitness lovers break free from the traditional confines of crowded indoor gyms,” said Hetrick. “OutFit’s technology platform coordinates a network of mobile training vans -- each packed with a gym’s worth of worldclass TRX training equipment – to deliver our clients well-rounded strength and cardio workouts in convenient, inspiring outdoor locations near you -- as well as personal training services delivered to your driveway or culdesac.” OutFit also offers a unique entrepreneurial opportunity to fitness professionals and enthusiasts who want to combine their love of healthy living with a flexible and affordable business ownership model. Offering innovative workout experiences, proprietary technology, flexible schedules, and a diverse range of service offerings on a predictable subscription revenue model, OutFit Training provides a truly unique opportunity for those yearning to build their own businesses. It even offers an affordable chance for boutique fitness studio operators to expand their existing businesses beyond their walls. The brand’s franchise opportunity appeals to qualified candidates seeking an affordable buy-in,
low-overhead business, with an opportunity to generate cashflow and break even quickly. Franchisees enjoy a full range of support by OutFit’s headquarters team as well as a network of industryleading preferred vendors. Franchisees receive extensive training in business, technology, and fitness operations – as well as one of the industry’s lowest startup investments of less than $100,000. “With an HQ team made of fitness industry veterans, we’ve seen just about every conceivable training model. And we think the opportunity with OutFit is unparalled in today’s economy. After two years running and growing a multi-unit business in our own corporate market, we’ve experimented extensively and we’ve learned the hard lessons that we can now share with our franchise partners” says Darren Jacobson, OutFit’s Chief Operating Officer. “We’re also partnered with Enterprise, Efleets, and other leading service providers to create an outsourced turnkey solution for van procurement and financing, custom upfitting, delivery, ongoing maintenance, and so much more,” says Jacobson. “Our business model is optimized to help anyone in the fitness industry take their career to the next level! Our ‘$100k and 90 Days’ standard is certain to get any potential franchisee up and running their own mobile fitness business very quickly.” OutFit Training introduces new local markets to a communitydriven fitness experience that combines the exhilaration of the outdoors with high-intensity, total body workouts, and great camaraderie. From Service to Success:
4 Transferable Skills to Empower Veteran Entrepreneurs
Francis James, local owner of Expedia Cruises in Santa Clarita, CA, a full-service leisure travel agency franchise backed by the most powerful travel brand in the world. James spent over 24 years in the Air Force, and a following twenty years in corporate America before joining Expedia Cruises in 2018. Transitioning from working in the military to your next career venture can be a daunting prospect for veterans. But the unique skills, discipline, and leadership qualities that veterans develop during military service can be assets in their post-service career. I know firsthand just how intimidating life outside the military can be for activeduty service members and their families. Having found fulfillment and success in entrepreneurship, I can attest that 54 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
franchising has enabled me to embark on a second career act that uses the skills I learned in my military career. My dad was in the military which inspired my journey, I received congressional nominations and was appointed to the Air Force academy and then spent 10 years serving in active duty and 14 years as reservist in the Air Force, after I retired at rank of Lt Colonel. During active duty I earned an MBA in corporate finance from Chapman University, once retired, I spent two decades in corporate America before ultimately deciding to go into business for myself in 2018. I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur, but never took the leap.
It was only when I found Expedia Cruises that I realized how franchise ownership could help me achieve my goals, and I would be able to do so using the skills I retained from the military. Since then, I have further found ways to apply this skillset in how I lead my team and navigate turbulent times. My story is similar to many veterans who pave their path towards entrepreneurship following service. While we all have unique specializations and experiences, there are a few common threads that military men and women can apply to entrepreneurship, especially franchising. Here are four vital skills that have naturally carried over from the military and helped me become a successful firsttime franchisee.
1Your Team is a Resource
The common phrase, “there’s no ‘I’ in team,” takes on a different meaning in the military. Veterans are accustomed to working with diverse groups of individuals
no question that each branch of the military has a very specific of getting to know each of your employees “ It’s structure and hierarchy. This translates into business as structure is on a more personal level. Employ in-person exercises and outings, and vitally important to keep operations running efficiently. ” teambuilding carve out time in your schedule to meet and fostering a culture of mutual respect and cooperation because, in the military, your team is your lifeline. This also rings true in business as your team needs to be built of diverse and unique perspectives that support the longevity of your business. As the leader of that team, it is essential that you set the tone so that each member feels supported and that you are all working towards a common goal. When you become a business owner, you need to think of your employees as not just a team, but individual resources. Each person brings their own abilities and ideas, allowing you to tap into differing skills and boost overall knowledge to better serve your customers. Don’t simply look at your team members as another body, but instead as a resource – they are the backbone of your business. My time in the service taught me how to serve and support my team, and as a team we learned how to work together to tackle challenges. The most important aspect of teambuilding in business is utilizing each obstacle as a learning opportunity so you can improve and move forward better prepared.
2Own Your Role
Being a business owner comes with accountability – something that is vitally important in the military. With accountability comes garnering respect from your team and supervisors, as well as holding yourself to a set of standards. Military service teaches leaders to set clear goals and take personal responsibility for yourself and your team to achieve the task at hand. This goal-oriented mindset, instilled in me through the military, translates into a results-driven approach in entrepreneurship. Early-on in my military service, I was given supervisor responsibilities which taught me how to own my role as a
leader. As a leader, you are ultimately accountable for everything that happens in your business. Every customer you serve, service your offer, or product you sell is a reflection of your business, and ultimately the person running the business. Entrepreneurs need to take pride in whatever their business puts out, as well as inspire and motivate their team. By having a disciplined work ethic, being adaptable to change, and having the tenacity to navigate high-pressure situations, entrepreneurs can drive their business to success. This kind of flexible, yet accountable mindset helps leaders foster a strong work ethic and make sound business decisions.
3Be a Strong Voice
While some people thrive in team settings and are comfortable filling a support role, others such as myself, have an instinctive drive to do more. Everyone has their own leadership style and personality, and part of being a good leader is being open and honest about your communication. Do not shy away from embracing your personal leadership style – fuel that hunger and ensure your voice is heard. By establishing yourself as a power player on the team, you earn the respect of your colleagues, superiors, and employees. Developing my voice as a leader didn’t happen overnight. While I was in the military, I always voiced my desire to take on more responsibility. Now, as a business owner, I am able to inspire my team to take on more responsibility and work towards being strong leaders. Nurturing and supporting your team is a vital part of the business – you have to learn to simultaneously guide those who are stepping into a strong leadership role and foster those who are just getting their bearings. Don’t underestimate the power and value
with team members one on one where you can provide professional development and setting individual goals. A strong voice as a leader will instill confidence in your team and help navigate high-pressure situations that are inevitable when starting a business.
4Structure is Your Friend
It’s no question that each branch of the military has a very specific structure and hierarchy. This translates into business as structure is vitally important to keep operations running efficiently. Businesses come in all shapes and sizes, so structure isn’t a one size fits all mold. That means that if one structure isn’t working, you need to try something new. I naturally gravitate toward a clean and consistent structure because of my military experience. I’ve learned that establishing a clearly defined structure gives people something to follow and grab on to, minimizing room for error. By having systems and processes set up, your employees are also able to be more independent in creating a personalized deliverable for your customers. This also helps manage employee expectations regarding their role and growth within your company. Establishing a structure will set your venture up for success. This success will be translated into happier employees, better business and the ability to scale your entrepreneurial footprint. Like many other military veterans who have found success in entrepreneurship, I believe that the skills we learn in the military are transferable to franchising. From leaning into your team to establishing structure, veterans can tap into these skills for their next venture without feeling they need to start from ground zero. While it may feel daunting at times, taking the leap and setting your sights on owning a business is achievable. Franchising MAGAZINE USA 55

Can you discuss the significance of veterans’ commitment to service and community, and how it positively influences their engagement as franchise owners? Veterans often find it very rewarding to make a meaningful impact in their communities, and they take great pride in their mission to serve the community. Our brands are passionate about giving back to the communities we serve and we encourage our franchisees to have a strong local presence in their communities. Many veterans often find that the civilian work they do after their service ends lacks meaning. By choosing to start a business that provides essential residential and commercial services, our franchisees can continue their custom of service by cleaning, restoring, maintaining, and/or safeguarding local homes and businesses in their area. This focus allows veteran franchisees to help people through challenging situations as they work to deliver positive outcomes.
Can you share insights into how veterans’ focus on mission accomplishment aligns with the goals and objectives of successful franchise operations? Veterans have been trained to think and plan strategically to ensure a positive outcome. These skills can be applied toward the management of one of our franchise businesses. Developing longterm goals, implementing effective strategies and anticipating challenges are vital aspects of both military operations and opening a reputable service-focused franchise.
How does the ability to adapt to different environments and situations, characteristic of military service, benefit veterans in the diverse landscape of franchising? Military service members are exposed to variety of social situations and are trained to adapt to constantly changing circumstances. Mission success is dependent on building strong relationships with fellow service members. Because of those experiences, veteran business owners have learned to be quick on their feet and find creative solutions to complex problems. These problem-solving skills are invaluable when dealing with a diverse customer base, and this adaptability fosters
trust and loyalty among customers from various backgrounds, contributing to the success of their franchise.
In what ways do veterans’ dedication to continuous improvement and learning contribute to the ongoing success of their franchise ventures?
to veterans and to make our franchise opportunities even more accessible, BELFOR Franchise Group offers a special veteran discount that is applied to the initial franchise fee. We believe that veterans have a unique perspective and dedication that can contribute to the future success of our franchise family, so we do our best to ensure that our franchise opportunities are within reach for those who have served our country.
Continuous improvement is essential in military service, and it is equally important to franchise growth. Veterans, through their commitment to learning, are readily equipped to identify opportunities for expansion, enter new markets, and explore additional revenue streams, contributing to the overall growth of their businesses. Veterans are not afraid to put in long hours and to lead by example. These traits are critical when scaling a franchise business. Their determination to overcome a variety of challenges propels many veteran owners to thrive in the franchising industry.
Is joining a franchise less of a financial burden on veterans’ than if they were to go into business on their own? It’s important for veterans to thoroughly research and evaluate specific franchise opportunities to ensure alignment with their skills, goals, and financial capabilities. To express our gratitude

franchisee in action: Mark McMurray | Floor Coverings International
Redefining Shipshape:
Navy Officer’s Impactful Career in the Flooring Business Mark McMurray always knew he wanted to try many things,
Roots in the Military
but after a career in the military and as a leadership consultant,
Born on an Air Force military base, Mark McMurray grew up watching his father’s successful military career. Before he graduated from high school, McMurray had joined the Marines as a private first class. He had set his sights on a bright future in the armed forces, and he wanted to maximize his military experience. McMurray was selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated and went on to serve as a Surface Warfare Officer on a Destroyer in Japan. It was there that he had his first experiences with program management and engineering operations.
McMurray has been able to chart his own course as a business owner with Floor Coverings International.
For a few years, McMurray honed his leadership skills on the decks of U.S. Navy vessels overseas. In 1998, he transitioned out of the military, ready for his next adventure. McMurray was hired by General Electric where he took on leadership roles in operations management, creating a foundation for his career outside of the military. Over the course of the next two decades, McMurray went on to earn his Master of Science in Operations Management and a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt Certification. 62 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
McMurray prioritized educating himself as a leader, brushing up on the latest leadership trends and case studies. Working as a leadership consultant across several industries, McMurray learned the ins and outs of what helped businesses operate smoothly. He was working with FirstService Brands when he met the leadership team of Floor Coverings International— a franchise business that would go on to play an integral role in his future. Having weighed the possibility of small business ownership for quite some time, McMurray realized he had reached a crossroads in his professional career: continue with consulting or take a leap into entrepreneurship.
Steps Towards Franchising He and his wife Jenny had thought about starting a business together for years, but they decided they would only move forward with a business opportunity that met the specific criteria that they laid out. Were they to open a franchise together, the McMurrays agreed that it would have to be in an industry they both had an interest in, the franchisor’s values were aligned with their own, the model would have to be scalable, and the business’ finances had to match with their personal goals. The McMurrays saw franchise ownership as a life investment, not an experiment— profitability was a must. The security of a steady paycheck made the shift to business ownership a daunting transition, but the promise of being able to grow a business on their own terms drew the McMurrays in. Because of his work at FirstService Brands, McMurray knew members of the Floor Coverings International leadership team, so when he made the phone call to further explore franchise ownership, he felt embraced by the company before even investing. Once McMurray started learning more about Floor Coverings International, he felt franchise ownership became a question of ‘how’ not ‘if’. The franchise opportunity aligned with the McMurray’s interests, financial objectives, and provided a structure that they believed would set them up for success. In February 2017, the McMurrays launched Floor Coverings International North Tampa, with high hopes for the future.
A Foundation in Flooring
on the discipline and detail-orientation
Now, approaching seven years of operating his Floor Coverings International business, McMurray looks back on his decision to go into franchising with gratitude. He concedes that running a business is hard but finds franchise ownership to be rewarding in ways that his corporate and consulting lifestyles simply could not deliver. While his decades of experience in consulting informed his leadership style, McMurray personally found that the desire to make his business succeed is a daily motivator. McMurray believes that you need to be prepared to do whatever it takes to steer your team in the right direction, and whatever experiences you have in the past that can help. In fact, it is essential for any franchisee to find a way to lean on their past experiences when taking on the role of an owner.
instilled in him through the military
McMurray’s approach to leadership for every mission he was a part of in the military was based on what he called a dual-mentality mindset. This means keeping the overall mission in mind while also using a “get-it-done” mindset for the tasks immediately at hand. This dual-mentality approach helps McMurray get essential jobs done while keeping in mind the ‘why’ that drives him forward. Having a short-term outlook is essential to completing tasks in a timely manner, and keeping the long-term vision in mind keeps you motivated for the work. Business ownership requires a person to attend to all of these elements, all the time.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Bill McCarver | StretchLab
Bill McCarver
Life as a Veteran Bill retired from the Army in 2010 after spending seven years in Fort Hood, TX, a premier division. He went on to work for the Department of Veteran Affairs and looked forward to living as a family man and spending time with his grandchildren. However, since leaving the Army, he has dealt with chronic shoulder and hamstring injuries. Physical fitness had always been an essential part of his physical and mental well-being, but the daily pain was becoming unbearable.
He would regularly visit an orthopedic surgeon for the pain, but nothing seemed to stick. The pain would always come back, and Bill stayed in this uncomfortable cycle for twelve years. The frustration of not being able to play with his grandkids energetically and enjoy the activities he once loved had Bill searching for relief. After finding assisted stretching on Google, Bill decided to try it as a last desperate attempt to cure his pain. He worked in Dallas, a nearly twohour commute to his home in TempleBelton; however, there was a StretchLab nearby. He signed up for a consultation and began stretching twice a week for 50 minutes.
Bill noticed an incredible decrease in pain within just a month and a half. Then, after six months, Bill recalls his improvement of being just short of a biblical miracle – he is pain-free! Now, Bill lives a lovely life with his family, playing with his grandchildren and helping other Veterans experience the same relief.
About Bill’s ‘Miracle’: StretchLab: StretchLab offers a variety of one-on-one personalized stretching services including a 25-minute stretch that concentrates on the client’s current stretching needs, as well as a 50-minute head-to-toe deep stretch that addresses all major muscle groups. Flexologists™ hold a nationally recognized certificate in assisted stretching, as the Flexologist Training Program is accredited by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, a first in the field of assisted stretching and something no other brand offers. Monthly memberships are available for four or eight visits per month, as well as drop-in stretches. Assisted stretching worked for Bill because of the one-on-one stretching technique in which a trained professional guided him through a series of stretched, with the aim of improving flexibility, range of motion and freedom of movement, specific to Bill’s personal needs. 64 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
From the Field to Franchising: With StretchLab becoming such a huge part of 61-year-old Bill’s life and his desire to retire creeping in, he knew the twohour commute to get stretched would soon become intolerable. He also recognized the large community of retired military veterans in Temple-Belton who could benefit from assisted stretching. Thus, Bill decided to look into opening his own StretchLab. He used much of his retirement savings to fund the studio and celebrated StretchLab Temple-Belton’s grand opening in July 2023. Bill understands many people in constant pain don’t understand why; his main focus now is to help people feel their best through assisted stretching. Additionally, with Bill’s new focus on spending as much time with his family as possible, the StretchLab studio has turned into a true family-operated business with his daughter, Christina Botha, working as the Sales Manager, allowing them to spend more time together not only personally, but professionally.
How Past Experience Helped Shape Present: Bill’s past has helped prepare him for his entrepreneurial journey. He draws from his military experience in everything
he encounters. From unforeseen circumstances to decisions to fuel success, Bill can tap into the military decisionmaking process and handle the situation quickly and effectively. Recognizing the circle of retiring from the Army first-hand is valuable when encouraging other veterans. After retirement, many people feel that their whole purpose for existence has been taken away, and they lose all selfdiscipline.

focus: Coment Cleaners
Who Dares Wins
“I had gone from flying an attack helicopter to flying a desk, not to mention the lack of brotherhood, so I looked for something more exciting and challenging,” he said. Not fixed to one location or industry Dan went searching and found a home and business in New Mexico. Surveyng businesses for sale, a run down dry cleaners caught his eye. Dan saught advice from local experts and small business consultants who advised him that a dry cleaning business was not likely to be suceessful. With the british SAS motto in mind – ‘Who Dares Wins’ – Dan followed his instincts and decided to purchase the Comet Cleaners and Laundry franchise. Being a part of a successful franchise system was a decision he never regretted.
When Dan Schneider was young he knew he wanted to own his own business. He studied business at the University of Notre Dame before becoming an Army officer and helicopter pilot for the 1st Cavalry Division. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and flew the UH-1 Huey and the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter in Desert Storm. After a few intense years in the Army, including flight training, Airborne and Air Assault schools, and serving in Iraq with the Cavalry, he realized he did not want to make a career out of the military, so began looking for other opportunities. He spent a year in the corporate world of pharmaceutical sales before deciding to follow his dream of being an entrepreneur. 66 Franchising MAGAZINE USA
In May, Comet Cleaners and Laundry will be celebrating their 30th anniversary, a success which Dan partially attributes to his military career. “The military was very formative for me and, in many ways, still influences how I run my business and life. Discipline, structure, systems building, standard operating procedures, teamwork, accountability, goals and objectives, faith – these all carry over into the entrepreneurial world. Recruiting and keeping talented people is an ongoing task if you want to stay ‘mission ready.’ This means developing leaders who see your vision and want to grow with you.” With little knowledge of being a business owner or running a dry cleaners, Dan relied heavily on the advice and knowledge of the Franchisor, Jack Godfrey. Armed with the support, guidance and knowledge that Jack provided to him, Dan rebranded and expanded. “We started with one franchise plant and a drop store
with a different name. I had a sense that branding was important so within a few months, we turned the drop store into a Comet Cleaners and Laundry and started processing there as well. By the end of the first year, that store’s sales quadrupled. We added a third plant six years later. As we start our 30th year of business, we have never had a single year (outside of Covid) that our sales have not increased over the previous year,” he says. When asked about owning a franchise Dan recounts that, “throughout the process, the franchise was always looking to help us to succeed. Their corporate culture is a family culture, and that has always stuck with me. In building my own culture, I remembered that one year in corporate America. I never wanted to have a faceless, cold business that treated its people like a means to an end. We treat our staff like family, try to give them a place of belonging and a work environment that they’re proud to be a part of.” Dan says that, “Over time, I was able to enjoy the freedom (and responsibility) of being an entrepreneur. Coming out of the military, I knew the importance of strategic planning and being prepared for any contingency. You can’t see everything that can happen, but you can be prepared and make adjustments. I find that it is easier today to manage 50 employees then it was to manage five at the very beginning.” There was a steep learning curve, however, but with the support of the Franchise he was able to learn quickly on the job. The learning curve included everything from personnel management, to fixing boilers, quality control, to stain removal techniques. Even today he still meets up with Jack to discuss trends in the market, ways to adjust business models in a changing economy, and any modernizing of equipment that helps efficiency. He recalls the advice of his mentor, Joel Fink, from the franchise. “Your main competitor,” Joel told me, “is not the other cleaners up the street. Rather, it’s the washing machine sitting in every home. So, if they come to you, it’s because you provide a friendly service at an affordable price. Treat them like family and they’ll come back.” Being a Comet Cleaners and Laundry franchise owner means being part of the largest family-owned dry cleaning chain in the USA. Be your own boss, feed that entrepreneurial spirit, do business that not only helps individuals but your community as a
whole. With experiences like Dan’s, it is clear that Comet Cleaners and Landry is an easy and straightforward business model to follow. The Comet system is proven, so you have more time to focus on growing your business. When asked what Dan might say to prospective franchisees, he says: “It’s a great business model and run by good people. Comet Cleaners and Laundry is a known and trusted name in the industry.” Franchising MAGAZINE USA 67

That played a big role in my decision to join the franchise. I wanted to avoid being gone for 12 hours a day. I pretty much missed the first half of my kids’ lives because I was always gone.” Baldwin said he is excited to be taking over Gotcha Covered of Edmond because he likes selling products that improve customers’ homes. “We aren’t repairing or dealing with problems,” Baldwin said. “It’s awesome to work with customers who want to make 68 Franchising MAGAZINE USA

Allen’s journey to fitness, and eventually franchising, started back in college at Temple University when she was looking for a workout beyond weightlifting. During her junior year, she found Pure Barre through a Craigslist ad seeking teachers and jumped on the opportunity to try a class.
She was instantly hooked, and quickly entered teacher training. VOL 12, ISSUE 1, janUary 2024 Being an instructor became a joyous side hustle for the rest of her time at Temple, and when it came time to graduate, Allen looked for ways to take her love of barre to the next level.
