he 2013 Goals Conference opens with a flourish on Thursday, June 27th with the Chamber’s sixth annual George E. Merrick Award of Excellence dinner and auction.

This prestigious award will be bestowed upon a community leader who has served the City Beautiful in a meaningful and lasting way.

Each year, five iconic individuals from the Coral Gables community are singled out and recognized as distinguished honorees, with one leader earning the most prestigious award. Past winners include Arva Parks McCabe of the Coral Gables Museum; Betsey Adams of the Coral Gables Garden Club; former City Commissioner James Barker; former City Commissioner Wayne “Chip” Withers and Ambassador Charles “Chuck” Cobb.

On Friday, June 28th, this year’s Good Morning Coral Gables breakfast will be sponsored

by Florida Blue and Mercantil Commercebank.

During the breakfast, incoming Chairman Perry Adair will introduce his leadership team, as well as share his vision for the upcoming year.

Throughout the day, participants will have an opportunity to share in various goal-setting sessions by committee, which will help to solidify

action plans for the upcoming Chamber year.

The Goals Conference luncheon is sponsored by the University of Miami and will feature Head Basketball Coach Jim Larranaga, as well as the State of the Chamber address by our president.

he Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce will host its 18th annual Baptist Health Tour of the Gables 5K on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 AM. The race will take runners on a scenic tour through Coral Gables, beginning at Merrick Park in downtown Coral Gables and ending at City Hall.

I

can see it in my son’s eyes every morning as he awakes at 6:15 to get to high school in time to make the 7:20 bell…the look that asks, “isn’t it summer yet?” As a youngster in the suburbs of New York City, I fondly recall the month of May signaled the end of school and oncoming summer with swim parties, trips to the beach and the Adirondacks, eating tomatoes fresh from the garden with the juice dripping down to your elbows and the always popular Rockland County Fair.

Enjoy your summer and rest assured that your Chamber will be on the job working to better the business and lifestyle climate of our great Gables.

As an adult, I continue to look forward to summer, now here in the sub-tropics with our pool finally warm enough for evening dips under the stars and our garden transformed for the summer growing of collard greens, peanuts and okra. Perhaps there will be a trip to the Rockies, Sanibel Island or Ashville, and we know we can look forward to our great July 4th fireworks extravaganza at The Biltmore Hotel.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE: One Coral Gables, One Goal!

Brooks and Rene Ruiz. There is no better home for companies like these than the Gables. It is a perfect fit given our creative psyche, plethora of start-ups and entrepreneurial spirit.

t seems hard to believe that the launch of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council’s One Community One Goal initiative took place one year ago this month.

International banking and finance already have a significant footprint in Coral Gables, with numerous headquarters for insurance, wealth management, finance, private equity and venture capital firms. Again, given the existence of nearly 140 multinational companies, 22 trade offices, proximity to the airport and the existing banks that have called Coral Gables home since the 1970’s. We have a legacy of excelling in this area and the credibility to back it up. Why not think bigger as we further integrate technology into the world of banking and grow our profile among the biggest firms and corporations.

I

Our Chamber was involved from the very beginning, working with the Beacon Council’s Steering Committee of “who’s who” to gather data from our members that helped ultimately determine the targeted industries that will be the basis of our business development efforts for the next few years.

As we approach the one year anniversary of the program, our Chamber continues to be engaged, with our efforts primarily focused around three industries: creative design, hospitality & tourism and international banking & finance.

These may seem like obvious choices given the current landscape of Coral Gables’ business community. But, our goals are bigger and more audacious than just business recruitment and job creation. We want to be a prominent player in bringing major corporations to The City Beautiful.

Our efforts are thus intended to further augment the good work of our partners at the Beacon Council.

The creative design industries run the gamut of opportunities for the Gables, building upon existing companies that provide advertising and marketing, architecture, fashion, digital media and design services.

Imagine being the epicenter for creative design for all of South Florida, further synergizing with companies like Vortex Communications, VS

Finally, hospitality and tourism are the golden ticket. Given that the community visitor already knows Coral Gables - both for business and leisure - we are well positioned to grow exponentially in the visitor biz. We can focus strategically on international tourists, who currently account for 50% of the market share, as well as medical and cultural tourism that can excel in the perfect niche that is the Gables. Cruise passengers also know Coral Gables and there is tremendous opportunity in this segment of the market, as well.

Finally, the engine that makes this entire program go are our educational assets. The University of Miami is in our front yard, with other educational assets at our fingertips. With a keen focus on internship programs in many of our Gables’ businesses, we can provide the lift for this lofty program.

As you can see, all of the pieces are in place. Now, we just need to make things happen and think big. That has been the hallmark of the Coral Gables business community since we first opened our doors!

Putting the D & C in DC!

aving just returned from our annual fly-in to Washington DC, I am convinced, more than ever, that if you do not have a PhD in deciphering acronyms (or better yet, making them up yourself), you may be in the ever-shrinking minority of wonks and politicos who never smell the sweet scent of success.

Each Spring, our Chamber takes a delegation of local business leaders to meet with lawmakers, agencies and other entities that are charged with carrying out the daily brand of politics that we commonly refer to as the federal government. Sure, there is the left, the right, and the middle; the liberals, the conservatives and the moderates; the Democrats, the Republicans and the Independents and so on and so forth. The bottom line is, no matter your leanings or political proclivities, we are all Americans and we all seek a brighter future.

You might have a pro-business ideology if you own your business and likely wish to see less regulation, less taxes and more dough in your pocket. Or, you may work for a major company that embraces altruism and thus, you think that all of us could do more than we are currently doing to help others. Nevertheless, the one commonality is that we should all be doing something to make sure our voices are heard in DC… and that starts with our Chamber’s very active advocacy efforts.

And fixing our immigration system means addressing things like H-1 B, W-visa and H-2A visas. Huh? Sit down with any member of our South Florida delegation, and you will also hear about the desire to bring back earmarks, the delicious pile of pork that finds its way home for South Florida, courtesy of a deftly skilled politician. The loss of these programs over the last few years has meant that there is no direct route to ensure money flows back into local districts and no way to get this done. This is money that is needed and will be well spent. But, who will blink first?

And, you have to know your stuff, often getting just a few minutes with the elected member of Congress and their legislative staff. This year, our priorities included immigration reform, visa waiver, funding requests and even e-fairness, a bill the US Senate passed while we were in DC to require on-line retailers to collect sales tax and ship it back to the state of origin (think AMAZON). This could be a windfall of $2-$3 billion for Florida. Billion, with a B! The reality is, DC is an alphabet soup of legislation, departments and programs. The only way to truly understand it is to be part of the process and help us raise our collective voices.

When we arrived in our nation’s capital, DC was abuzz with the brewing conversation on comprehensive immigration reform. Not since 1986 has there been any meaningful dialogue on fixing this broken system. Sure, there have been attempts along the way over the last 30 years, but nothing at the level of what the Gang of 8 has produced in the last few weeks.

Gang of 8, you ask? Not quite an acronym, but certainly an “inside baseball” term in DC that may have even had a secret House counterpart. www.coralgableschamber.org | CHAMBER CONNECTION | MAY-JUNE 2013
