Dear Fellow Chamber Members:

he 2013-14 Chamber Year is off to a great start. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your enthusiasm and support. Our Chamber mission this year is to add value to your membership by focusing on five “I’s”: Impact, Information, Innovation, Inspiration and Involvement.

At our last Good Morning Coral Gables Breakfast, I talked about Dan Bondroff, a local artist. Dan showed me a single brush stroke he applied to a water color that made the piece come alive. Dan’s development and application of that brush stroke that made his work stand out parallels what successful businesses do. They develop and apply a “brush stroke” that creates a special effect that sets the business apart. Such Inspiration that can be gained from the arts is why the arts are one of my Chamber priorities.

I recently encountered a brush stroke of a different type courtesy of our fellow Trustee member Baptist Heath. It seems my gallbladder was less than enthused with the fat content of my wife’s homemade chili. I felt badly enough to miss three days of work - unheard of for me- so had to concede I needed a doctor, and made the call.

I told Lulu I had likely pressed the wrong number and scheduling appointments may not be her job. Lulu’s job is actually helping patients who already have appointments for procedures prep for their procedures.

She could easily have told me “appointments are not my job; let me transfer you to the person who handles that.”

Instead, without hesitating, Lulu, told me, “It is the job of every person here to help people who are not feeling well to feel better.”

I explained my situation and she said, “Let’s help you find someone who can see you right away.” We discussed several doctors, and picked one best suited for me. She then gave me the direct number of that doctor’s appointment scheduler. Lulu told me to call her back if I had any problems.

Now, when I hung up, I was still sick but I felt much better. Why? Because Lulu made it clear that not only did she care; the organization cared that I was not feeling well and wanted me to feel better. Then and there I decided to refer to such acts of exemplary performance as “Luluisms!”

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE: Taxi!

aving returned from a quick jaunt to Las Vegas this past month, I realized that there are some things that happen that definitely should not – as the saying goes - stay in Vegas. We need to know about them right here in the 305, starting first and foremost with their very high-profile and uber-successful taxi industry.

The time is now, the political will is plentiful and the need to compete is critical. World-class cities need world-class taxis…and we are more like third-world at the moment.

Change is in the sweet-smelling, refreshingly cool air.

From the moment I stepped foot outside McCarron International Airport in Sin City, I knew I was no longer in Miami - apart from the lack of humidity and mountainous terrain. And for the briefest of moments, it was a good thing, a very good thing.

You see, Las Vegas is a lot like Miami in that it is a major tourist destination, especially for leisure travelers and conventioneers. Most of those who visit Vegas arrive by airplane, stay on The Strip and travel to and fro during their visit via taxi. Hotels have specially cordoned cue-lines for those looking to take a taxi at all hours of the day. It is organized, orderly and well-mannered. In fact, it is a thing of beauty.

Here at home…well, not so much. It is more like a free-forall and even securing a clean cab is like hitting the lottery.

This makes no sense. We are a smart group, a creative people and an informed consumer. We are also a gateway to the world, much more so than the desert city. We have got to do better.

If you have been following the local news, then you know there is a strong push to upgrade our taxi industry, starting most notably with credit card acceptance. This is especially important in the Gables with a great number of visitors (including international visitors) heading into the City Beautiful to do business. In most cases, they prefer to use a credit card to keep a record of their expenses, similar to options they might have in other North American cities.

They also may not have cash (who carries cash anymore anyway?) or the proper currency, having just arrived here.

That is a significant problem and one that is easily solved.

The County Commission is hard at work drafting new legislation – and updating other outdated ordinances - that would ultimately address these issues, as well as require that taxi cabs have GPS, Sun Passes, working AC and yes, credit card acceptance. Welcome to the new century, folks, where convenience is king and the system changes to accommodate the growing trends in the industry and demands by the consumer. Novel, I know. Now, throw in a collared shirt, clean and delightfully fragrant cabs, great customer service and someone who will help you with your bags at curbside and we have a winner!

The truth is, credit card acceptance leads to greater satisfaction on the part of the passenger and bigger tips for the driver. We know this! TRUSTEE TALK Greetings, fellow Trustees!

I

promised you that our Trustee Reception last month at the Actors’ Playhouse would be one not to miss…and I was right! With the reception actually on the stage, it gave us a unique perspective of the theater. In addition to the great networking, we were treated to a sneak preview John Allen, of an incredibly talanted 12-year-old actress, Home Financing Center & now starring in “Ruthless” at the Playhouse, who Trustee Council Chair belted out a number from the show with all the johna@homefinancingcenter.com confidence of a Broadway star, and received raves by those attending!

You would think that would be a hard act to follow, but the October Trustee Recption at Sabadell was just as enjoyable, great networking complete with delicious hors d’ourves and everyone’s favorite beverage of choice, not to mention some terrfic raffle prizes!

Our September luncheon, showcasing the Miami Heat Team physician Dr. Haran Selesnick, broke attendance records, with Trustees posing for photos with the NBA trophy, the Heat players and the cheerleaders.

Baptist and Doctors Hospital spared no effort in making this a luncheon not soon forgotten.

Coming up on November 12 is our next Trustee Reception – and you absolutely don’t want to miss this one, to be held at Montica Jewelery.

We were brought up-to-date with the proposed plans for upgrading and expanding one of the most important medical facilities in our area and a vital part of our community. ell, anyone who has previously attended The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce’s Re-Connect Lunch understands that this is not your typical networking activity. That’s precisely why the Re-Connect Lunch seems to grow month after month. So there you have it, the Re-Connect special sauce recipe for success is simple.

Get the right mix of business bwners & professionals in a room, facilitate introductions without putting anyone into a networking induced coma (Finland’s 7th largest killer), watch the connections happen and the business start to exchange.
