PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - A PRESENT LIFE

With the end of the calendar year now in clear view, I have started to think alot about what is in store for our Chamber and local business community in 2015. And yet, it is hard to believe that we are about to close another chapter, but the time is nigh.

Some of you are likely already knee-deep in setting resolutions for yourself - or your business - or both. You might call them goals or initiatives or the like. I am no different, which is why I have been thinking long and hard about what I can do to be a better business leader, and a better Chamber president, in the new year.

And after the past few months of percolation, I think I am onto something. In my daily observations of our community, attending events this last holiday season and while meeting with members, I realize that all of us are struggling to be truly present. We are living in a time of incredible distraction and well, it is not only noticeable, it is actually, well, very distracting. Maybe we are tired or overwhelmed or even disinterested, but there seems to be way too much “else” going on that keeps our minds from being fully engaged.

Imagine for a moment you are at a meeting or luncheon or presentation and think about what you might actually be doing during said moment. Are you listening? Are you available? Are you present?

up in this emerging lifestyle of distraction. It is just too easy to work in space these days and when everyone else around you has their head bowed as if in prayer, you too need to be equally bent.

When we are at our best, we are completely present, and embracing the uber popular phrase of 2014 – we are leaned in. It is actually pretty easy to lean in; yet, it is harder to do so in a stance of being truly present.

It is just so darned convenient to be whisked away and taken to the most remote corners of the world by the proverbial cloud.

So, here is my challenge for 2015 – and it is a simple one. Re-engage, make yourself available, put down your phone. That text will keep a while longer; that FB post will be funny in an hour; and your email is not going anywhere. If it is a true emergency, someone will actually call you (on the phone!) or flag you down.

I am going to strive to be more present in the new year, unabashed in my desire to connect more fully and stay engaged in a way that will probably end up annoying you just a little bit.

Imagine what the world will look like and how rich the conversation will be sans selfie, with spoken words , and minus the mayhem. I promise you it will be great!

See you soon... in the present!

I would challenge that you are not...that your cell phone is probably in your hand, your head is down and your fingers are swiping and flying. Your mind is a million miles away as you return an email, respond to a text or post a comment on Facebook. You are not listening.

You are not available. You are no longer present.

You, like me, are suddenly distracted. Trust me, with everything at our fingertips, it is easy to be. I promise you, this is not a judgment or criticism; it is a reminder that who we are and what we have become is wrapped coralgableschamber.org │ CHAMBER CONNECTION │January - February 2015

The former safety recapped his career and related how, after having to retire in 2004 due to a back injury, he made the successful transition from the bright lights of the football field to the competitive and complex financial world at Principal Financial Group.

Wooden recently received the Unsung Hero Award from the Miami Dolphins Alumni Association, which honors a player who may not have received the recognition he deserved during his football career. A great success in both of his completely different careers, Wooden was inspirational and humorous.

New Trustee member Apollo Bank, represented by our fellow Diplomat Alex Jimenez and Apollo C.E.O. Eddy Ariola, kicked off December for the Trustees at a great reception at Love Is Blind at Merrick Park. If you haven’t been to Love Is Blind, you’re in for a treat! Delicious food and libations were enjoyed by the Trustees and Chamber Board members, and Alex was, as always, a great host!

Only two days later was the Chamber’s Annual Diamond Awards – and two of our Diplomats took home top honors – Intermedia Touch & Cristina Miller for Outstanding Technology Company Award, while LOI Marketing & Nelson Penalver received the award for Outstanding Minority-Owned Business. Another firm represented on the Diplomat Council, Ivy Accounting, Tax & Advisory & Evelyn Hsu, was in the top three in the Minority-Owned Business Category. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists, and a special tip of the hat to long-time Trustee Allen Morris, who was honored with the first Business Leader of the Year Award!
