THOUGHTS FROM OUR CHAIR Wayne Cameron Eldred Chair of the Board, CGCC Tarpon Bend Raw Bar & Grill weldred@tarponbend.com My Dear Chamber Friends, As my Chairmanship starts to sunset over the course of the next two months, I would like to express my gratitude for honoring me with the opportunity to serve each of you and our community.

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment and it will be very much missed. I set out to accomplish a few things at the inception: build a great team around our president and staff, while increasing the positivity and morale around the office.

Our staff works tirelessly each and every day to keep our business community not only current, but ahead of the curve.

We have grown all our events year over year and our Chamber finances and cash flow currently sit at an all-time high. Mark, Ivette, Erica, the entire team and Chamber members deserve all the credit for this accomplishment. And we have continued to find new ways to help each of you foster opportunities for better networking relationships, friendships, community development, outreach and investment, and overall personal and professional growth.

All great things though have to come to a close, and mine is near. I have all the confidence that my colleague John Allen will do his level best to continue on with tradition to build and foster what the last 90 years have blessed us with in our community.

As immediate Past Chairman, I will work closely behind the scenes to continue to support our newest Chairman, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, President and staff and of course each of you!

As I stated on day one, I will always be humbly "At Your Service" at the Chamber or you can always find me making fish fingers and French fries at Tarpon Bend Raw Bar & Grill.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - WHAT'S NEXT? Mark A. Trowbridge

This past fall, our Chamber produced a re-imagined Progress Week in honor of our 90th anniversary. Milestones are important for civic organizations for one simple purpose – they allow us to celebrate our contributions to the community and share with our stakeholders, partners and members all the good work we have accomplished over the history of our organization’s existence. Call it a very public pat on the back!

Of course, after the party is over, it means we need to keep our eye on the ball and look forward to the next decade as we prepare for our centennial. Any Chamber, or community-based non-profit, that reaches 90 years is cause for celebration, but to continuously serve a community for 100 years is something to stand up and cheer for. And, of course, it is never too early to get started.

So, now we ask, What’s Next?

At our Chamber’s Annual Conference on August 25th and 26th, we will be asking that very question…and in many cases, doing our best to get you – and your business – the answers.

For the third year, our Chamber will convene our membership and community leaders to gaze into the crystal ball and predict what the future looks like. Our goal is to bring greater focus to top-of-mind topics like healthcare, the sharing economy, infrastructure needs and more. This program promises to ignite your imagination! And, we will be back at the iconic Biltmore Hotel, one of the historic landmarks that hearkens back to the days of our founder.

Over the course of the next eight weeks, we will be promoting the Annual Conference at our various events. But, why don’t you make a commitment to join us now as a delegate or sponsor – or both. We actually moved the conference dates from June to August to better accommodate our members’ travel schedules and to better coincide with the change in leadership for our Chamber which transitions on September 1. Plus, the August date is the perfect time to focus on the year ahead – What’s Next? – with a fresh perspective and rested mind. It is the time of year when we head back to work with renewed enthusiasm and our conference will help you further galvanize these feelings and let your mind soak in our program.

Most importantly, as we enter our 91st year, we start to look toward our 100th. The next 10 years will see a strategic focus on new businesses coming to our community to fill the more than one million more square feet of office space, young professionals living in our new residential buildings built downtown and in the business core, visitors taking advantage of new hotel product and most critically, our Chamber at the epicenter.

It is who we are – part convener, part cheerleader, part problem solver, part innovator – and all parts champion for our local businesses.

The opportunities in Coral Gables mirror those that exist in our county, region, state and nation with one added benefit – we are The City Beautiful and that has some special magic to it. We have amazing partners, dedicated leaders, outstanding volunteers and the most engaged members of any Chamber in our community. Now, we need to bring all of these incredible assets and endless energy together to get things done, now and over the next decade, as we embrace our future.

So, I ask you, What’s Next?

All we need is you to make it happen.

Our theme of What’s Next? offers a number of motifs: including what’s next for our Chamber, our community, your business and the economy. During the course of the day, you will have the opportunity to be innovators and leave inspired.

And, of course, everything begins the night before with our annual George E. Merrick Awards of Excellence. Each year for the past nine, we have honored the very best of Coral Gables, a tradition begun by our Chamber and the omnipresent Allen Morris.

I can still recall the day Allen called upon us to help create these awards and I am still eternally grateful to him for the trust and faith he placed in us to carry this mission forward.

Relaxing, fun, a time for family and friends, and generally a slower time for business here in South Florida.

That’s not the case in Coral Gables. Our Trustee Members are busy and in town. Check out these great shots from our recent Trustee Reception at C1 Bank. Thanks to our friends and Trustee Diplomat, Sara Hernandez, we had a successful evening of networking, while hosting a delegation from Belarus.

The Global Business Affairs Committee showed the Belarussian delegation how business is done in The City Beautiful!

Our next Trustee Reception is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12th at Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables. Did you know they have been serving the Coral Gables community for nearly 60 years and still remain family-owned?

Rumor has it, they will be featuring the all-new 2017 E-Class sedan while raffling off some great items. Be sure to register early for this event as space is limited.
