OUR CHAMBER CHAIRMAN’S KEYS TO SUCCESS John O’Rourke III Montica Jewelry CGCC Chairman john@montica.com s our Chamber continues to grow, members regularly ask me how they can get more involved, grow their businesses, meet more of the “right people” and enhance their sphere of influence. The reality is there isn’t a simple answer and it all depends. I would say that without a doubt, having the right attitude – the right “mindset” – will go a long way in enhancing the many benefits and opportunities available to you. When you’re in the right frame of mind, opportunities begin to present themselves to you.

Let’s face it, life has its ups and downs and if you’re like most of us, consistently having the right “mind-set” can be a real challenge. Personally, I have my good days when I’m in the zone and others when I just want to go home, go to bed and get a “do-over”. That being said, I really believe that having the right “mind-set” is a must in order for me to operate at optimum performance. I’m constantly on the lookout for people, books, movies, songs, seminars; basically anything that can keep me fueled, focused and highly motivated.

I recently came across a wonderful book

by New York Times bestselling author, Andy Andrews entitled “Mastering the 7 Decisions”. The book is the culmination of a lifetime of research and offers an indepth understanding of the 7 Decisions we all must eventually make. Remember, deciding not to make a decision is

essentially making a decision. Andy Andrews is a historian and through a lifetime of research has discovered that there are 7 common threads that exist among the highly successful and influential. These are the principles of personal success - parenting, relationships, financial success, and leadership.

Here are Andy’s 7 Decisions for Success: 1.

“The Buck Stops Here” - President Harry Truman had such a sign on his desk to remind him that we must first take responsibility for our own actions, those of the past, as well as those of the future.

2.

I will seek wisdom – We must be willing and open minded to seek out the wisdom of others. The quickest and most effective way to do so is by serving others -giving of our time and talents.

3. I am a person of action - Live your life with a sense of urgency and choose to do it now!

4.

I have a decided heart – Commit wholeheartedly to your dream and have the faith that your destiny is assured.

5.

Today I will choose to be happy – Be grateful for each and every day. Take a moment to “smell the roses” and smile!

6.

I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit – Forgive others, as well as yourself.

7.

I will persist without exception – Become a person of great faith. Believe in yourself, your dreams and the wonderful world in which you live in and above all - never, ever quit.

I’ve read a bunch of personal growth books over the years and this one is excellent. It’s direct, to the point and a must read if you’re looking for some personal pick me up!

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - A NEW YEAR OF OPPORTUNITY! Mark A. Trowbridge, President & CEO Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce

M

ost of us take stock of our place in the world at the start of each new year – an annual rite of passage that is often filled with resolutions, goals, promises, commitments and obligations. We are usually eager for a new year to start, ranging from a chance for a do-over and fresh start to an extension of the good times and building on the momentum already achieved.

Each year, our Chamber sets a significant number of goals, from each committee all the way up to the Chairman. These initiatives guide the program of work for the Chamber, layered over our strategic priorities that provide the foundation for the Chamber.

This year, these initiatives have focused on five key areas for the Chamber to place our efforts, all with significant progress to date.

Our economic development activities have been robust, especially as it relates to permitting assistance. This fall, we welcomed a new-to-market company that means high quality jobs for Coral Gables, and more importantly, opportunity. We rolled out the red carpet, and in partnership with the City, made sure that they were able to open on time. Our approach was simple – put all the decision makers in the room and come up with a plan, stay committed and focused, and fire on all cylinders. It was a huge win for our Chamber and our City.

Our support for the Miracle Mile Streetscape project remains stalwart, especially as a catalyst for greater economic development.

We have seen new restaurants open on the Mile – headlined by Chamber member Seasons 52 – and again, this translates into new

jobs. Our leadership has been apprised of the plans and they are exciting, a legacy project for this City. The re-imagination of the Mile will ensure that we remain competitive as a retail district, as well as create a highly visible destination for visitors, residents, businesses, and our greater community.

The economy, while still sluggish, is beginning to show signs of modest recovery. The first quarter of 2011 will be a strong barometer of consumer confidence, which is critical to the creation of new jobs, business expansion, and the spending of dollars. Our Chamber has engaged some of our retailers and restauranteurs in a conversation on how we can play a more prominent role in this recovery, including a special advertising opportunity in Miami Today that is going to be a game-changer.

Our Travel and Tourism efforts continue to be strong, with the Chamber serving as the leader in the community on collaborative efforts that have brought us Pow Wow, Super Art in the Park, and other major community events. This year, our focus is on positioning Coral Gables as the premier dining destination in South Florida – a gastronomic juggernaut to tempt and tease any palate. We are the affordable luxury community without peer and it is our finest hour.

Finally, with the elections for Mayor and City Commission upon is in April 2011, the Chamber will take its most active role ever in a municipal election. The business community must be top-of-mind for the candidates and our issues are as critical as they have ever been. This election has the potential to be the most transformational in our community’s history and we will have a seat at the head of the table.

If these opportunities excite you – and I hope they do – then it is your moment to get engaged…get involved…and get noticed.

he Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce has once again unfurled the Flags On Ponce

Program!

In 1993, the Chamber envisioned a boulevard of flags CREATING a blaze of color along Ponce de Leon Boulevard as a tribute to businesses engaged in international trade, travel and commerce vital to the economic and cultural life of our business community.

The Chamber created the program in partnership with

the City of Coral Gables and IACC as an initiative to showcase our community’s international character and to recognize the significant number of Consulates and multinational businesses that call Coral Gables home.

“Flags on Ponce is one of our great community programs where we partner with the City of Coral Gables to recognize and celebrate the international nature of our business community and remind all of South Florida that Coral Gables is indeed the corporate capital of the Americas,” said John O’Rourke, III Chairman of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce.

The Flags on Ponce program is a stunning visual display of Coral Gables’ rich diversity and the focal point of our international business community.
