T

he Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce will honor excellence in business at its 12th Annual Diamond Awards on Friday, November 13, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables.

Chamber Chair Sarah Artecona will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies at the annual awards luncheon. Every year the Diamond Awards are bestowed upon outstanding local busineses. It is the Chamber’s signature awards program for top companies in the Coral Gables community.

The prestigious Diamond Awards will honor businesses in eight different categories this year. These brilliant businesses will

be recognized for their outstanding performance among five criteria: business achievement, business involvement, community involvement, customer service and workplace environment. We have one new category this year, the Restaurant/Retailer Business Award, in addition to our Small, Medium, Large, NonProfit, Go Green, MinorityOwned and Diamond-inthe-Rough Business Award categories.

The annual Diamond Awards are the Chamber’s way of recognizing outstanding companies that do luminous work in our

community, as well as reward those organizations that are achieving stellar success in the workplace.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Sarah Nesbitt Artecona University of Miami CGCC Chairwoman sartecona@miami.edu t is officially a few months into my year and the old movie phrase “lights, camera, ACTION” continues to come to mind.

Your Chamber leadership is very busy putting the action into the goals I set forth for my year and we are off to a great start.

As a refresher, the goals are boosting travel and tourism, the Business Improvement District’s streetscape project, City of Coral Gables permitting assistance program and the small business blue ribbon task force.

During the last month, our Chamber President Mark Trowbridge and I have met with Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick, Commissioners Chip Withers, Bill Kerdyk and Maria Anderson, City Manager Pat Salerno, County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen, the City of Coral Gables Economic Development Board, the publisher and editor of Miami Monthly Magazine Elena Carpenter, UM’s Executive Vice Provost Bill Green, and the leadership of the Coral Gables Community Foundation. These meetings had a specific agenda: to promote our goals for this year.

These meetings have been productive on a number of levels. First, our outreach has been welcomed and our goals well-received. Our goals overlap with many of our government officials and boards. In a number of instances we will join forces to promote these

common goals to boost the voice of the business community.

Now that the groundwork is set, we are off and running. Our small business group will meet with a Blue Ribbon Panel, comprised of key stakeholders and business leaders, and held its first workshop last month on financing and access to the credit market. We want to keep an open dialogue and do everything we can to help businesses during these uncertain times.

The Permitting Assistance Program will hold a day-long focus group with developers, architects and Chamber businesses so we can share common concerns getting new businesses into our Class “A” office space. City Manager Pat Salerno has agreed to join us so he can hear first-hand about these issues and work jointly with us on solutions.

The Streetscape Program continues to move through the City and business owner process. Chair-Elect John O’Rourke, who is both Vice President of the BID and the Chamber representative to the City’s Economic Development Board, continues to work closely on this process and we expect more news on this front in the coming months as the City Manager turns his attention to matters other than the budget.

And, lastly, travel and tourism. We are optimistic that the Super Bowl Host Committee will select Coral Gables as a locale for one of its “Super Celebration” events. It would mean a great deal to our merchants, restaurants and other businesses to host such a prestigious event.

So stay tuned. I hope our lights, camera and actions will be “Oscar” worthy.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - CELEBRATE EDUCATION! Mark A. Trowbridge, President & CEO Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce mtrowbridge@coralgableschamber.org

E

ach year, as part of my CEO Workday experience, I participate in our school system’s countywide program, Principal for a Day. This year, I was paired with Adolfo Costa, the new principal at Coral Gables Senior High School, and we had a terrific day at one of the finest high schools in our county.

In my years of serving as a Principal for a Day, no school leader has spent as much time with me over the course of a day as Adolfo did, and for this, I am most grateful.

The purpose of Principal for a Day is to engage our civic and business leaders in our public schools and offer them an intimate, first-hand account of the incredible things going on at the elementary, middle and senior high levels. It is then our job as leaders to go out and share our experiences with colleagues and friends, whipping up support for the tremendous work our educators are doing each and every day.

The Cavaliers have had a tough start to the year with a student death in September, but I found the energy at the school to be amazing, the students engaging, and the leadership outstanding!

While there may be painful memories, I was reminded that young people are resilient and that time does heal all wounds, no matter how deep. And the educators at CGHS, along with the leadership of the school system, have made every resource available to the school and its students to aid in this recovery.

We began our day at 7:15am with a quick briefing and were quickly off for a tour of various classes, including a thoughtful lesson on the history of jazz/swing by new band director Daniel Ibarra-Scurr.

Many of you know I was a total band geek in high school, playing in the symphonic, jazz and marching bands, including a stint my senior season as drum major of the marching Commodores! Needless to say, I was in bliss (more on this later!).

We also got a chance to chat with the leadership of the ROTC program, which had two direct appointees to our military service academies last year – impressive. While many students were engaged in FCAT re-takes, laughter filled the hallways between classes, students hung out with their friends, and yet, there was a strong sense of order and discipline as students moved around the large campus.

Lunch was a highlight as the students in the culinary program (perennial award winners at our annual Chamber Holiday Party) prepared a roasted chicken with rice, accompanied by a delicious arugula salad. I would have been content to enjoy the carbohydrate smorgasbord offered up in the school cafeteria, but Adolfo would have none of that. Thank goodness!

The afternoon was spent visiting more classrooms, a webcast from the central administration, meeting with the Activities Director, and talking with students from the National Honor Society (I was the president of NHS my senior year of high school).

After school, I had a chance to direct the marching band during their rehearsal and fulfill a dream of recapturing my youth. Of course, they chose to have me lead them in the ESPN theme song – a network that did not even exist when I was in high school.

All in all, I can tell you that I continue to be amazed at what our schools (and students) accomplish on limited resources and under intense pressure from FCAT and other high expectations.

These are challenging times for education and yet our students are thriving – they are more than our future, they are our greatest hope.

Join us as we celebrate education this month at our Good Morning Coral Gables breakfast on November 19th. Our students will “run the show” that day and our keynote speaker will be Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Schools. As the son, grandson, brother, nephew and uncle of teachers, my love of public education courses through my veins and permeates my DNA. Hats off to Coral Gables High School, their principal Adolfo Costa, and the entire student body. Thanks for the warm hospitality.

FLAGS ON PONCE RETURNS TO THE BOULEVARD LARRY M. NOLAN Coral Gables Chamber

I

n 1993, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce envisioned a boulevard of flags set ablaze with color as a tribute to businesses engaged in international trade, travel and commerce vital to the economic and cultural life of our community.

The Flags on Ponce program is a stunning visual display of Coral Gables’ rich diversity and the focal point of our international business community. Each year, flags from over 120 countries are flown along Ponce de Leon Boulevard during the months of December through June.

The International Affairs Committee of the Coral

Gables Chamber of Commerce supports the Flags on Ponce program, which for many years was maintained by the City of Coral Gables.

The Chamber created the program back in 1993 as an initiative to showcase our community’s international

character and to recognize the significant number of consulates and multinational businesses that call Coral Gables home.

Shortly thereafter, the City of Coral Gables took over the program and expanded it to what we see today. In an

effort to sustain this program, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce manages this program, heralding our Chamber’s commitment to doing business in a global marketplace.

n most other parts of the country, the winter solstice is recognized by its bleak, dormant atmosphere, but not in Coral Gables!
