Gibbons Faith Journey

on campus, students are never far from a place that encourages the heart and enlivens the spirit

I

t moves you deep inside, Spanish teacher Miguel Casas says, pointing to his heart. He is describing Kairos, the four-day retreat for senior students aimed at deepening their faith with God and with one another. Casas has attended several Kairos retreats as an adult leader since Gibbons began offering them in 2010. For many students who take the Kairos journey it has changed their lives, he explains, adding that to witness their spiritual rejuvenation is for him, a humbling experience. Kairos, or the Lord’s time, has its roots in the teachings of St. Ignatius Loyola. It is among the latest retreats Cardinal Gibbons High School offers as part of its spiritual life program, which supports and enriches its faith tradition. On campus, students are never far from a place that encourages the heart and enlivens the spirit, whether it is attending daily Mass, walking through the prayer garden, chatting with a trusted friend, or lending a helping hand to a fellow student. Here, students as well as faculty members, parents, and alumni may choose from myriad initiatives born of the desire to be of service to others. Beyond voluntary retreats, those initiatives include our Outreach program as well as such clubs as Franciscan Youth International and the Pall Bearer Society. A place of scholarship, Gibbons also enables students to explore their faith through its academic and athletic programs. Since its founding in 1909, a hallmark of

Spanish teacher Miguel Casas

the Cardinal Gibbons experience has been not only to teach math, English, and history, but also to teach students how to live a meaningful life. That, Casas says, is just what students have the opportunity to learn at a Kairos retreat. It is also why he feels retreats in general and Kairos in particular are “living proof ” of our faith tradition, and “a great way to bring to fruition” our school’s mission, he adds. Those involved in the program agree. Through a mix of adult and peer talks, small groups, and activities, Kairos inspires students to reflect on their past and prepare for the future. Students, adds Casas, open their hearts and minds “to what kind of life they, as evolving adults, want to lead and what kind of relationship they want with God and the people around them.”

Gibbons Pall Bearer Society The Pall Bearer Society is a ministry of respect and care. Students learn to offer sympathy and support to others and offer hope in the face of death. The society gives young people opportunities to be leaders in the service of others. CGHS partners with local funeral directors to identify situations where our services may be needed. Parent volunteers accompany a group of six students to each funeral. Established in 2010 the society’s mission is: • To put into practice the Corporal Works of Mercy by offering Pall Bearer Services free of charge to those in need, especially the poor and elderly • To affirm the value and the dignity of human life

Students head out for a day of service with Director of Outreach Agnes Penny, front row, far left.

• To represent the community at a person’s final commendation • To commemorate and pray for the dead

For seniors, the Kairos experience can assist with the transition to college. “It makes them feel more grounded, especially in their spiritual life, and provides them with points of reference as they move on from here,” notes Casas. Josh Teder ’11, who attended Kairos while a student at Cardinal Gibbons and then again as an alumnus and retreat leader, can attest to its impact. “Kairos was a powerful experience that allowed my class to bond together like never before,” he explains. “This helped me transition to college because I always Ben Huger ’12 and Jerry Zinn ’12 were this year’s student leaders of the Pall Bearer Society

Our school continually receives heartfelt sentiments regarding the student pall bearer volunteers: I attended the funeral of a very good friend and discovered the most meaningful service organization of young men I’ve seen recently. There they were, six seniors and two juniors seriously serving as pallbearers for a ninety six year old lady they had never met. They did this with such dignity and respect it was a moving tribute to their Society, the Pallbearer Society, a volunteer ministry of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh.

Gibbons Outreach Initiatives Our student volunteers, serve, staff, support, and contribute to over 50 local, regional, and national agencies each year. They are also the largest volunteer group for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. knew I had a group to fall back on if I ever needed help. Kairos lasts longer than just four days, that’s what’s amazed me the most.” In addition to Kairos, there are retreats structured for each of the other classes. Over the years, the retreat program has grown, with nearly 500 students attending the 12 retreats offered in the 2011-2012 school year. The goal of Gibbons retreats, says Crista Anders, the school’s retreat director, is to help retreatants become their “best and truest selves, the people God created them to be.” Each class retreat, she adds, seeks to meet the unique needs of the students during that phase of their lives. Many students attend several retreats as well as serve as peer leaders on many others during their time at Cardinal Gibbons. One of those students is Feilin Scruggs ’12 who describes her involvement with the retreat program as “life affirming.” Through retreats, she adds that she came to see how God works in people’s lives and to understand the true meaning behind the concept of faithfilled service. It is a concept she whole-heartedly embraces. Evidence of that is the nearly 3,000 hours of community service she performed throughout her four years at Cardinal Gibbons. “It is,” she notes, her voice a mere whisper, “my small way of giving back.” Read more about spiritual life at Cardinal Gibbons at www.cghsnc.org/spirituallife

omething novel is taking place in one of tthe second floor science labs. It centers on the research project Matthew Zipple ’12 conducted during his senior year and the article he penned for the “Journal of Experimental Secondary Science.”

From the start, Zipple was ready for the challenge. Before entering his senior year, he had completed all four AP science courses Gibbons offers and wanted to continue to explore science. To that end, administrators blessed the yearlong independent study project.

Getting his article on the effects of melatonin on termites published in a scientific journal is indeed an honor, one typically reserved for college or graduate students. What is equally distinct, however, is the academic journey that inspired him.

“Students have taken courses not offered at Gibbons as independent study classes,” notes Goethals, who worked with Zipple throughout the year conducting research and collecting data. “But designing one for a specific student is not common, showing how our school, whenever possible, works to meet the needs of each individual student.”

His is a journey that began with science instructor Susan Goethals and her colleague, environmental science teacher Dan Porter. The pair designed an independent study for Zipple that not only encouraged him to absorb knowledge, but through research, to create new information.

Gibbons does so by offering myriad academic opportunities. They range from 18 AP and 33 Honors courses to independent studies and clubs like Robotics that provide students with real-life experience.

“Our research,” Zipple explains, “shines some light on the careful balance required for insects, and more significantly, insect colonies, to be successful.”

Science teacher Susan Goethals confers with Matthew Zipple ’12 about his independent study project.

For instance, the Robotics team, along with coach and past Gibbons parent John Toebes, applied for two patents. Team members came up with the ideas for both patents - one is for a folding forklift; the other is for a custom treaded wheel – after participating in robotics competitions during the school year. “These were perfect opportunities for students to learn about the patent process as well as apply their engineering skills,” Toebes said in a recent interview. Goethals adds that providing students with the opportunity to engage in research is one of the best ways for them to understand the scientific process. The work, she adds, also enriched her lessons. Many faculty members find innovative ways to enhance their lessons and, in turn, challenge their students. This summer alone, teachers were involved in such activities as attending the Honeywell Educators Space Camp and the Sustainable Forestry Teachers’ Academy, completing a master’s degree in Spanish in Spain or a doctorate at Cambridge University in England, and participating in a seminar on the Holocaust at Columbia University in Manhattan. Such efforts continue during the school year. That’s when students explore art and history at local and regional museums, investigate the development of electrically powered vehicles as part of Sustainability Day, and work with the University of North Carolina’s Institute for the Environment and Department of

Marine Science to test the water quality in the Neuse River. They also tour research laboratories at companies like Novozymes North America in Franklinton, NC, a leader in the production and marketing of enzymes for many food, feed, and industrial uses. Teachers have been acknowledged for their efforts. This year, for instance, business teacher Darsey Williams was nominated by her colleagues at Cardinal Gibbons to receive its Susan Scott Daly ’76 Excellence in Teaching Award. Meanwhile, choral director and math instructor Joan Troy received the Monsignor Gerald L. Lewis Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is given to a Catholic educator in the Diocese of Raleigh. She is the third Gibbons teacher to receive the award, joining Rebecca Dason, chair of the fine arts department, and Goethals. Zipple credits Gibbons teachers like Goethals for helping him, “to achieve academic success outside of the traditional classroom setting and course of study.” He says the independent study has prepared him “to enter the world of higher level research” as an incoming freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he plans to study biophysics. Teacher Talk With a full year of teaching at Cardinal Gibbons securely under their belts five freshman faculty members reflect on why they chose to work here and/or what has impressed them the most about our school.

Dana Wilkinson (English) I chose to work at Cardinal Gibbons High School because I prefer to work in a Christian learning environment. My past teaching experiences have shown me that a spiritual foundation needs to be present for true emotional growth to take place. Fortunately, my subject matter, English literature and language, allows me room to explore larger ethical issues with students on a daily basis.

Gary Meyerl ’82 (Theology) I have been involved in Catholic education - as a teacher, campus minister, principal and educational consultant - for the past 25 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and on a national level. As an alumnus, I have witnessed the evolution of Gibbons becoming the school that it is today and I welcomed the prospect of coming “home” and serving the Gibbons community.

Sherry Witherell (Science) I chose Gibbons because of my positive subbing experience here. I had no plans to return to teaching but my time here exposed me to a whole new world of opportunities and student body.

Will Catterson (Math) I’ve never worked with a faculty, staff, and administrative team so friendly and supportive. When someone asks me “Is there anything you need?” they really mean it.

Social Studies teacher Nicholas Mangum works with students.

Diane McClellan (Math) I like so much about being here! Probably what I like first and foremost is the leadership and maturity of the students, and the respect they show teachers and each other. Of course the staff and administration are incredible, as well.

Artful Expressions

Student musicians, artists, and dancers take to the stage during class productions, coffee house nights, pep rallies, and talent shows throughout the year

I

t is minutes before the curtain rises on the summer production of the musical “Little Women.” Cardinal Gibbons cast members are racing to the stage to find their places amid the group of young actors from The Franciscan School. Then the lights dim and the play begins.

“LITTLE WOMEN”

This is the debut performance of the Gibbons Drama Outreach Program. Kevin Ferguson, the drama department’s artistic director, says the outreach program is the result of “our desire to work, share, and interact with our students and teachers at local Catholic elementary and middle schools using a common art form.” For “Little Women,” Gibbons collaborated with alumna Michelle Giannini ’06, a music and performing arts teacher at The Franciscan School, and her middleschool drama students. While Giannini directed the production, which was performed in June at St. Francis, Ferguson served as its producer. “It went very well … extremely well received,” Ferguson says of the production. “Everyone involved seems very pleased with how things went.” Along with the new drama outreach program, the Fine Arts Department in March also hosted, “Creating in the 21st Century,” the school’s first ever fine arts festival. These new additions underscore the Fine Arts Department’s steady growth over the last few years. Today, more than 900 students are involved in some way with the arts.

To be sure there is always a new program or class being added in the arts, as in all disciplines, at Cardinal Gibbons. What is also certain is that the arts take center stage year round. Student musicians, artists, and dancers take to the stage during class productions, coffee house nights, pep rallies, and talent shows throughout the year. Meanwhile, students’ works of art are on display in the hallways; and before and after school and in between classes a student musician is sure to be playing a tune on the piano in the school’s main lobby. Outside arts groups recognize our students. Annetta San Diego ’13 and Nicholas D’Andrea ’13, for instance, were selected to perform as members of the 2011 North

Q&A with Tim and Ellie Student-artists Ellie Czejkowski ’13 and Timothy Rozansky ’13 received their national scholastic art awards at a ceremony held in June at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan. During the ceremony Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep delivered a special address to and congratulated all the national winners. Rebecca Dason, chair of the Cardinal Gibbons Fine Arts Department who also attended the ceremony, called the national recognition a tremendous pat on the back for our students. Read what the students have to say about art, the award, and the ceremony in Manhattan.

Timothy Rozansky ’13

Ellie Czejkowski ’13

How long have you been interested in art? Tim: Since 5th grade. Ellie: Since freshman year What do you like most about art? Tim: I like that I can make whatever I want. Art is fun in that way. Ellie: I like the freedom of expression art affords me. What is the best experience you have had with art? Tim: The best experience I had with art was sophomore year when I first took clay. I learned that I loved it. Ellie: Receiving this honor. What does this national award mean to you? Tim: This award means a lot to me … and will inspire me to try harder next year so maybe I can send another piece to Scholastic. Ellie: The award provided me with recognition for my work... It’s nice to know that other people see value in what I created. Talk about the ceremony in Manhattan and how much it meant to you. Tim: There were many good pieces of art and many kids of different ages at the ceremony. It meant a great deal to me because someone actually noticed my work and thought it was good enough to get a medal. Ellie: The experience made me realize how big the award really is.

Carolina Honors Orchestra at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston Salem – an honor bestowed on just 128 students in the state. And Katherine Combs ’15 was named to the All-State Band. Then there are Ellie Czejkowski ’13 and Timothy Rozansky ’13 who captured national honors in the 2012 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. They were selected from among 1,600 students throughout the nation as well as students in American schools abroad. Both are also among the 57 Cardinal Gibbons student-artists who received awards in the scholastic art awards competition for the eastern/central North Carolina region. “What I like most about art is the freedom of expression it affords me,” says Czejkowski who experienced her first art class as a freshman at Gibbons. Of her national award, she notes, “It provided me with recognition for my work... It’s nice to know that other people see value in what I created.” Czejkowski’s work is a clay sculpture; Rozansky’s piece is a ceramic coil pot. Their pieces were included in the National Student Exhibition on display at Parsons the New School for Design in Manhattan this summer; and starting this fall, will be in a traveling exhibit.

to the middle schools in the upcoming school year.” The added hope, he explains, is to develop a small touring troupe of Gibbons student actors to bring interactive performances to the elementary and middle schools sometime in the future.

Ferguson adds that a basic principle of the drama department “is that you learn the most by doing things.” That principle is at play with the new outreach program. Now, with one performance under its belt, what’s next for the program?

Ferguson also points out that the drama outreach program not only offers more opportunities to act, but also provides Gibbons students with leadership opportunities and middle schoolers with a preview of the next level of performance.

The idea says Ferguson, is to expand to other schools and eventually grow into “a performance academy with classes and workshops, which will be going out

Giannini agrees and adds: “It is so important for middle school and high school students to learn from each other. Theatre is a great setting for this.”

Applause, pride, and tradition fill the room. The inductees represent different age groups and sports. They are: Julie Shea ’77, among the state’s top high school distance runners; Bryan McGann’79, a baseball, soccer , basketball, and golf player; Troy Butler ’82, a baseball and basketball player; Jim and Peggy Taylor, Gibbons parents and volunteers; and Dean Monroe, former Gibbons coach and athletic director, who served the school for 22 years. The Athletics Hall of Fame was created over the last year with the goal of providing Cardinal Gibbons with the opportunity to celebrate alumni, coaches,

Tradition athletic administrators, and friends of the school’s sports program. It also serves, among other things, to educate students about the talented athletes who attended Gibbons before them and continue the sports program’s legacy of success and excellence. Such excellence was showcased this same May evening as Max Schrock and Madison Bugg were recognized as Student-Athletes of the Year. The hall of fame inductees recall a school and, in turn, an athletics program that has changed over time yet has stayed the same in some very important ways. Leadership, faith, and teamwork are, and have always been, part of the tradition at the heart of what it means to be a student-athlete at Gibbons. From the way they play, pray, and study together generations of student-athletes have forged bonds with one another and with their school that have withstood the test of time.

The Men’s Varsity Soccer team wins state championship, one of nine this year for our school.

Take, for example, Bryan McGann ’79. Along with being an Athletics Hall of Fame inductee he is a member of the Alumni Hall of Fame, serves as the Alumni representative for the Cardinal Gibbons Fund Leadership Committee, and has participated in Alumni Career Day 2008- 2012. His daughter, Jordan, is an incoming Gibbons freshman.

championship titles, and earned Wachovia Cup points – awarded for a top eight finish – in 15 disciplines. Cardinal Gibbons’ 775 Wells Fargo Cup points represent the highest academic year total for any NCHSAA school (all classifications) since it joined the NCHSAA at the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year.

Time, it seems, has been very good to the athletics program, which over the years has grown in size and participation. Today, over 800 students are involved in the program, which fields all 23 NCHSAA-sanctioned sports and activities. There are also freshman and club teams.

But like the hall of fame inductees, student athletes before and after them are drawn to the school’s athletics program for more than the accolades it receives. To them, it is about how the program weaves its tradition of faith, leadership, excellence and teamwork, into the fabric of their daily lives.

With growth, hard work, and dedication, has come recognition. In the 2011-2012 academic year, Cardinal Gibbons High School captured its 11th Wells Fargo Cup for all-around sports excellence since 2000, won nine state

On any given day, you will see team members helping at the local soup kitchen, praying with their coach before a game, serving as pall bearers, welcoming their opponents or congratulating them on a win, among other activities.

Wells Fargo Cup highlights: Cardinal Gibbons captured the men’s swimming & diving and women’s volleyball titles three consecutive years – the same number of years it has been in the 3A classification. Meanwhile, it captured women’s cross country, men’s soccer, and men’s tennis two years in a row. Also, our cheerleaders were the first to claim two “Carolina Cups” (state championships); the first time was in 2007. The men’s cross country team earned its first 3A title to go with its 2006 2A title. The state championships women’s tennis and men’s winter track and field earned this year were their first.

Gibbons Athletics: Pride and Tradition

“Playing soccer my four years at Cardinal Gibbons was not only an important part of my education, but also part of my personal formation,” said Christopher Shannon ’12, a team captain for the state-championship winning men’s varsity soccer team. “It showed me the value of faith and teamwork, and instilled in me leadership skills that will guide me well into the future, both on and off the field.” Shannon’s athletic and academic journey will continue this fall when he attends Elon University where he plans to play soccer. He is not alone. A record 38 student-athletes in the Class of 2012 will go on to play NCAA sports in college. That is something else the hall of fame inductees have in common. Each of the four alumni athletes played sports on the college level. And while at North Carolina State Shea, now Julie Shea Sutton, was also a seven-time NCAA champion and ACC athlete of the year in 1980 and 1981. This October she will be inducted into State’s sports hall of fame. “This first class of inductees,” said Principal Jason D. Curtis, “not only represents exceptional athletic achievement, but also a true commitment to the mission of Cardinal Gibbons High School.” Read more about athletics at Cardinal Gibbons at www.cghsnc.org/athletics

“These two student-athletes help exemplify how hard work in their sport and in the classroom can lead to great things in the future,” notes former Athletic Director Dean Monroe. “They have been, and will continue to be, great representatives of our Cardinal Gibbons community.” For the last four years shortstop Max Schrock and volleyball player Madison Bugg have received numerous accolades in their respective sports. To cap their athletic careers at Cardinal Gibbons High School they have captured yet another award: Student-Athletes of the Year. Both were honored during the annual end-of-the year Athletic Awards dinner held on May 17th in the school’s gymnasium. The pair was chosen for the award from among eight finalists who were nominated by head varsity coaches. The other finalists, who were also recognized at the dinner, were: Matt Daly ’12, tennis; Connor Prevost ’12, football and lacrosse; Chris Shannon ’12, soccer; Caitlin Donovan ’12, soccer; Megan Kunkel ’12, cheerleading, and Morgan Reid ’14, basketball and soccer. Both are also among the 38 student-athletes in the Class of 2012 going on to play NCAA sports in College. Schrock will play baseball at the University of South Carolina; Bugg will play volleyball at Stanford University.

Many of the 38 student-athletes planning to play NCAA sports in college.

The six members of the inaugural class of the newly-created Cardinal Gibbons Alumni Hall of Fame were also honored at this year’s dinner. Ron Francis, director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes, was the keynote speaker at the dinner. Gibbons Parent David Skowron was awarded the Vincent H. Bode Volunteer Award.

Against the backdrop of the beautiful new addition to our school, it’s particularly gratifying to report the results of the 2011–2012 Cardinal Gibbons Fund. Once again, you demonstrated your commitment to this vitally important annual campaign that allows us to continue to enhance the quality of the programs and educational opportunities that help make Cardinal Gibbons such a special place for our children. Our focus again this year was to continue to increase donor participation and build toward a time when our annual fund will be self-sustaining for future generations of Gibbons students. The dollar value of our contributions grew by double digits again, increasing 19% this year, while the actual number of gifts received grew 24%. This continues the trend of prior years and demonstrates a groundswell of growing support for the Gibbons experience. With your help, our matching gifts increased 64%, providing an additional boost to our total results. Thank you so much for your support this year and your commitment to our Cardinal Gibbons family!

Annually, donors who have established Endowment Funds providing financial aid for students, gather together to meet student recipients at an Endowment Brunch held in their honor: Dan Byer, Keith and Valerie Rothschild, the Amanda J. Recognizing the importance of dedicated faculty, Bob Daly formed an endowment fund in 2007 in honor of his wife, Susan ’76, a former teacher, and established the Susan Scott Daly ’76 Excellence in Teaching Award at Gibbons. Then, this year, they also established an Outstanding Staff Award. The couple’s commitment to our school includes support of the Annual Fund, project support through the Philip N. Daly, Sr. and Frances K. Daly Trust, support of the annual Golf Tournament, Gala, and Online Auction. Susan served on the Family Association Board and as a 2012 Gala Co-Chair. They have four sons who are or will be Gibbons graduates, Scott ’07, Ryan ’08, Matthew ’12, and Sean ’13.

Each February, students enjoy speaking with alumni representing varied professions at the annual Career Day. Over thirty Alumni returned for the 5th Annual Career Day at Gibbons.

012 legacy

The Class of 2012’s Legacy It will stand atop the school’s new, sweeping, glass entryway. It will be a visual symbol of the Catholic community that is Cardinal Gibbons. It will be a towering cross — the Class of 2012’s senior gift to their alma mater. Since they will not be at Gibbons when the cross is installed the seniors presented school administrators with a replica of the cross during a ceremony in May. The bronze cross of the replica stands in bold relief against a background comprised of elements from Gibbons three campuses. There is a piece of stone from Gibbons when it was located on Hillsborough Street, from

1909 to the early 1960s, and was known first as Sacred Heart High School and later as Cathedral Latin High School. There is also a piece of slate from the roof of Holy Name Chapel at the Nazareth Orphanage, which shared the parcel of land on Western Blvd., our school’s second location from 1962 to 1999. The background also includes a piece of a green wooden bleacher from the gym of our school when it was on Western Blvd. Finally, there is a piece of a red brick from the current Edwards Mill Road campus. Alumnus Peter Ruocchio ’92 designed the replica cross. Encased in glass it will be a permanent piece of artwork gracing the school’s new lobby, which is to be completed in 2013.

“Both crosses are the tangible representation of the Class of 2012’s legacy,” said Fei-lin Scruggs ’12. She is one of the student leaders of the senior gift committee that came up with the idea for the senior gift. Of that legacy, she continued: “It is fitting that we started out as freshmen celebrating our school’s historic 100th-year anniversary and now we are watching the school enter the next phase of its life… We have had an unforgettable experience at Gibbons, but we would like to help give future students an even better experience.”
