REVIEW It’s a bold premise: None of what we achieved in the spring of 2020 would have been possible without the commitment to our digital vision – Connect. Collaborate. Create - conceived in 2012. Without the generous support of our Gibbons community that vision would not have been possible and teaching and learning in the fourth quarter of 2020, would have looked vastly different. In 2012, Cardinal Gibbons was in the midst of an ambitious building renovation and expansion plan while working on another grand project, our 1:1 Laptop Program. We saw such possibility for teaching, learning, and engagement in our new spaces and knew we could both open with more than double our square footage AND deploy over 1,000 new laptops to our students. Our educators embarked on 18 months of professional development to ensure they were ready to Connect. Collaborate. Create. Over the past eight years, I have witnessed some of the most remarkable advancements to teaching and learning at Gibbons. Our educators embraced digital tools that transformed how students learn. Fast forward to March of 2020 and the uncertainty of how Covid-19 would impact on-campus learning. Our educators embraced the shift to 100 percent distance learning in 48 hours because we had the tools, training, and expertise to keep the academic momentum going. Through the creativity we have harnessed this past year, we have forged new paths with such innovative classes like financial literacy, public speaking, and men’s and women’s fitness. They will nurture our students even more as independent thinkers and empower them to shape their own education and future.

The 2019-2020 academic year at Cardinal Gibbons began much like any other. The relative quiet of the summer gave way to the energetic activity of students and educators preparing for another year of learning, leading, serving, and, of course, engaging with one another. As it turns out, the year was anything but typical given the challenges brought on by COVID-19. The grit and resilience of the Gibbons community, the courage of so many during the pandemic, and the confidence of students and families made the difficult second half of the school year a success. So, let’s take a look back at some key achievements as well as memories that celebrate the resiliency and determination that helped us persevere through the most trying times in recent memory.

Held a total of
39 RETREATS
22 grade-level, eight middle-school, five club, and three athletic retreats as well as one educator retreat. Served more than

in all grade levels as well as 65 educators and coaches. Provided opportunities to lead retreats to more than

Hosted a blessing and dedication of the Short Journey Retreat Center, which drew over
100 ATTENDEES.
Celebrated the first year of operation of the center, our school’s home away from home, with plans to host the inaugural summer of

15TH NCHSAA WELLS FARGO CUP for overall athletic excellence, giving the school its second consecutive NCHSAA 4A Wells Fargo Cup. Gibbons is the first NCHSAA school to earn back-toback state cups in three competitive classifications – 4A, 3A, and 2A.

GIBBONS GRATEFUL Of the many words that come to mind to describe the 2019-2020 academic year at Gibbons, none is as poignant, telling, or accurate than “different”. It was, to be sure, a year unlike any other. From all that was different about the year, however, came a sense of profound gratitude. For it was the absolute gratitude we exhibited as a community that not only enabled us to survive but to grow. Much of that growth was due to the leadership of Interim Principal Nancy Barkan, who together with Assistant Principals Mike Rogosich ’90 and Mike Curatolo, propelled Gibbons forward. Under their guidance, Gibbons students and educators challenged themselves to take risks, pursue novel ideas, and work together for a shared purpose – to love, support, and inspire one another – to stand together as a family. Last winter, we also announced that Jeff Bell would become Gibbons’ first-ever Head of School. In doing so, we usher in a new chapter in our school’s storied history and ensure that Gibbons will continue to forge ahead. So much has happened in the past year that has influenced our future, more clearly defined the meaning of the Gibbons spirit, and kept us forever moving forward. Since the coronavirus forced our doors shut last March, we have rebounded first with distance learning and now with hybrid learning options.

#IGIVECATHOLIC It is the U.S. Catholic Church’s Giving Day, and it kicks off the charitable season and brings the Catholic community together to give thanks. The goal of the program is to inspire the Catholic community to come together as faithful stewards and to “Give Catholic” on #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back that takes place on December 1, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
